And thus, in no particular order, while trying to work my way through the large number of places I went, and wrote review drafts for, on our trip to Portugal a couple months ago... I get to by far the worst restaurant I've been to in a while, at least in a case where I was certainly expecting the opposite, and one of the worst reviews I've written in a long time. I have no idea what entirely different-sounding restaurant most of these people went to... it started out badly, when we got there, the first ones after they opened, for our reservation, the music was quite loud, so after being seated, we asked our server if she could turn it down, and she gave her an irritated look and stomped off. We think she turned it down a tiny bit for a couple minutes, then turned it back up even louder. My wife literally said (I was facing the other direction) that she saw that waitress trying to talk to another waiter and having a hard time due to the music volume. Wasn't quite the right vibe for 12:30 for lunch, was a bit more of a late evening bar vibe, music-wise? But also yeah, our waitress had a bit of an attitude. We talked about just walking out and going somewhere else, which I wish I had, but I'd seen so many great reviews, and we had a reservation, so we ordered a couple things, which did arrive pretty quickly there after. We tried, at the time (though I get the impression the menu probably also rotates pretty often) Potato cabbage chorizo balls - super bland, they just tasted like shaped balls of mashed potato. Didn't taste any chorizo or even cabbage, really. Boring. Squid - the worst squid I'd had in a while. The sauce was tasty enough but nothing amazing; the squid itself was way over-cooked, also, over-*grilled* specifically, it tasted charred. I still ate it, but it definitely wasn't worth 16 euros. A "pickled rabbit/quince/chorizo", because I was just so curious what it was. This one was actually super fun, unique and interesting, saving the restaurant as a whole from only getting one star. I was surprised after the other two. I've definitely never had anything like it before, and likely never will. There were a whole bunch of flavors, all great. But their menu is a chalk-board, so I have no idea if it's still being served, or if it disappeared from the menu a week after I was there in January. Their wine is also very much... American priced. If it were in Long Beach, 9 euro (or its American equivalent) for a glass of the house wine would seem very reasonable, and if it were in Los Angeles, it'd be downright cheap - in Portugal, though, I'd gotten used to much cheaper glasses of wine, so that was a bit surprising. I did like that they had a by-the-glass orange wine, though, so obviously I had a glass of the house orange wine. It was pretty decent. I'd have been happy for a red or white wine for half the price, though, as seemed common for similar restaurants nearby. That wouldn't have mattered so much if the food had been, overall, better, though, and the service hadn't been... a little snotty. read more

One of the most memorable dining experiences of all time. We spent 4 nights in Lisbon and came here twice, that's how great it was. I typically would avoid going to the same restaurant twice during a short stay in a city with so many good eats, if I can help it. In fact, I had already planned out all of my meals and made the proper reservations. But after having dinner the first night here, I had to cancel the reservation for our last night in Lisbon and snatch a reservation at Baldracca again. Between the two nights, we sampled almost all the items we wanted to try on the blackboard. That's part of the reason for the 2nd reservation. There were so many creative and delicious dishes that we just couldn't try with one meal between two people, so we had to come back the 2nd time. But the food is only one part (an important part) of the whole experience. We love the energy, the vibe, and the people in this little restaurant. Our first night there, we had the earliest reservation (i.e. when the restaurant open for the night). The servers got all of us in and seated, then literally had the "Listen up, this is how it goes..." to let everyone know what the restaurant is about, how many dishes to order based on how many in the party etc etc... They are very causal and basically said to enjoy and flag any of them down when ready to order or need of anything. Then they turn up the music and I felt like I am in a family or friend party event. Music blasting, dishes served, people chit chatting, laughing, just having a great time. We went back the 2nd time, the owner actually recognized us and welcomed us warmly. Because we snatched a later reservation that 2nd night, he even sat down at the end of the meal to talk to us a bit. Upon learning that we are visiting Porto next, he took some time to write down restaurant recommendations on a piece of paper and handed to us and offered us to try some of the sweet wine they made (which was absolutely delicious). We took a picture with him and honestly can't thank him enough. Truly a very special place because of the food, the atmosphere, and the people! read more

This shroud be next to "Hole in a wall" in a dictionary. Found it based on Yelp reviews, and glad we stopped by. The place is so hidden, the restaurant is very simple but the food is FANTASTIC! The best pizza we had in Portugal hands down. And the price is ridiculous- 11 Euros! The pasta dishes looked great as well, salad was nice and fresh. Doesn't look like anything BUT fantastic tapas restaurant. Loud but a fun filled loud. Owners are right there to make sure you're happy. Grilled octopus, veal cheek, catch of the day, fried pork all excellent. Shrimp was a little overcooked but still tasty. Crème brûlée and cheese cake good, not great but all in all worth a visit. If we're back in Lisbon we'll be here again. read more

My girlfriend and I came upon this place late one evening, while walking, looking for a place to eat. Since not many places were open since it was past 11PM (23:00), we were desperate, and this place seemed busy enough. Upon entering we stood there awkwardly for about 2-3 minutes, before someone even spoke to us. The manager or host told us that there was no more seats, and that we wouldn't be able to be served. This woman at a nearby table heard this, and said that we could have her table. The manager or host seemed annoyed by this. The thing that struck me odd, was that the couple behind us were seated right away by the manager or host as a table opened up at that same exact moment. Although, I wanted to leave, because I found the manager or host to be rather rude to us, my girlfriend insisted that we stay due to the fact not there wasn't too many options still open. This looked to be a mistake because the manager or host continued to treat us rudely. She brought the other couple, who sat after us, menus before us, and of course they received beverages and food before us. Still none of this prepared us for how horrible the food would be. I went into this not expecting great Italian food, but even with my lowered expectations, it will was able to disappoint. My girlfriend ordered the All'arrabbiata pasta dish, while I ordered the All Salmone pasta dish. Both of our pastas were lukewarm, and the pasta itself was undercooked, not even close to al dente. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. If you are desperate enough to eat here, I hope they aren't as rude to you as they were to us. read more

This restaurant was literally steps away from the AirBnb apartment we were staying at during our 5 day visit to Lisbon. The restaurant was rather busy when we arrived around 8pm and thought we would have to wait but luckily there was a small table for two available. The two servers working were friendly enough and spoke good English but seemed overworked and understaffed (one girl disappeared after she went to check the price of dessert for us) and it was difficult to flag them down for anything. When we were first seated we waited at least 10 minutes before they arrived with a menu. I was looking forward to trying out the salmon pasta but unfortunately they were out, so I settled for the Pasta Di Mare (spaghetti in a light tomato sauce with clams, mussels, fish and cilantro). My husband ordered the Roma Cidade Aberta pizza with mozzarella, chorizo and bell pepper. We also ordered a caprese salad to share. The food was fairly good and priced reasonably, at less than €8 for pizza and under €10 for my pasta. I did notice that although my pasta mentioned fish on the menu, there were only a couple small pieces (flakes, really). Nowhere near enough to even justify mentioning it as an ingredient on the menu. That was disappointing. We ordered a slice of apple pie for dessert thinking it might be house made but it tasted store-bought and it was also cold. read more

This place was terrible. We ordered the appetizer. The olives were practically rancid. We asked for them to take them back. Not only did they not replace them, the server didn't apologize or remove them from the bill. The pizza was OK. The seafood pasta wasn't fresh. Service was non existent. Interesting name. Good food, good prices, a little off the beaten path along a wonderful and quiet street. Pizza is quite good as is the pasta. My family went there twice. Both times we had the same server- I could have sworn that she lived in the US for some time as her English was perfect. Turned out she learned it all from TV! Amazing. The second time, we ate there a bit on the early side at a table by the front door. Just fantastic people watching along the peaceful quiet street. Simple menu of pizzas and pastas. Very reasonably priced 19,60€ for two pizzas, two small beers, and a small bottle of water (this includes a 2€ "cover" for two people). The servers were really friendly and the service was great. The pizzas were good too. The crust was a bit thinner than what I was expecting, not "doughy" but in the end it was good because didn't end up feeling too full. This is an excellent neighborhood restaurant featuring tasty, fresh pasta dishes and the best pizza i've had in Lisbon. The menu isn't enormous but there is plenty on it to satisfy everyone looking for a delicious Italian meal. I'd recommend the spaghetti carbonara and the spaghetti bolognese, and the panna cotta for dessert. Service is super friendly and efficient. If you find yourself around the castle or Rossio around mealtime, I encourage you to try Cantina Baldracca. read more

Just when I thought I was lost in translation , I stumbled upon this place . Portuguese inspired Italian food that was great. Be sure to try the pasta namesake for this place, it was great. Very small and quaint and well worth every 11€ cent. Hope to return in the future. read more
