The Second Saturday Art Walk is like the amazing race for art lovers (although much less intense…read moreand with wine involved). But, I was surprised how nicely organized and planned out the Art Walk is! They have a great system in place where patrons of the art walk have to visit ten or more galleries between the hours of 4-8pm to be entered into a raffle prize drawing, and believe me, there are a plethora of prizes! You can RSVP for the evening online, but no one ever checked us off or verified us during the evening, I think this is more a way for them to keep up with attendees post-event. The evening starts at 4pm at the Bohemian Riverfront Hotel, located right on Bay Street, an easy walk from anywhere downtown. You'll enjoy views of the river the hotels own lovely collection while you sip on a glass of complimentary wine and are introduced to several "spotlight" artists and galleries of the night. The reception takes place in the Rocks on the River restaurant during the winter months and the Rocks on the Roof bar during the summer months. Make sure you grab a map at this first stop and head over to the Tiffani Taylor Gallery at 5pm. Here you'll grab your first artist signature, remember, you have tasks to complete along this art-walk!! Having to get signatures from the artists was quite fun, because it allowed us to interact and learn about each artist in a way that was unique and very interactive. Once you finish at the Tiffani Taylor Gallery, you are invited to visit any of the 32 participating galleries. We headed back to River Street next and hit up Gallery 209, with it's impressive history as well as extensive collection (if you're looking to add some excitement to your night, grab a Wet Willie's to drink while you walk!) From there we headed towards City Market and checked out A.T. Hun Art Gallery, Gullah Living and many more. If you're looking for get those ten signatures, City Market Art Center is an easy way to get them all and it's a great time to visit as almost all the galleries were open (plus you can grab pizza to go at Vinnie Van Go-Go's!) When the clock strikes 8pm, make sure you're at the closing reception located at in a back room in the Andaz Hotel. Here you'll be entered into a raffle drawing where it's next to impossible to loose and be able to chat with fellow gallery racers and grab another glass of wine if it suites you. The art walk is a perfect way to meet locals, see a huge assortment of galleries in one night, take the evening at your own pace and appreciate local artists. I highly recommend adding this event to your Second Saturday bucket list!

Art & Amble is a fascinating tour of Savannah for anyone who loves to learn about art, people and…read morestories - I really enjoyed that the history of the city was placed in a global context, linking up histories of Savannah to the wider world and stories that I knew, but didn't know were connected to Savannah. Nicole is an excellent, personable and knowledgeable tour guide who made the tour leisurely but informative. Every stop had a portrait connected to it, so we could visualise people and places at the same time, and we got to go inside a historic house in the city, and see a wonderful private art collection. The small group size made for a lovely, conversational experience, but also felt very safe and cognisant of the pandemic. I would definitely recommend art, history and antiques lovers to take a tour with Art & Amble when in Savannah!

I was also able to view everything in a short amount of time without it feeling overwhelming (I hate going to a museum that has too much I'll never get to view). The cost is free, however, donations are appreciated. The staff working the front desk wasn't rude by any means, however, she wasn't too welcoming. Overall, this was a very positive experience.

The space is only a couple of rooms, and houses a rotating exhibition with no permanent collection. I happened in on a day when the artist du jour was giving a talk and just missed it, which was a shame. The exhibit was a very locally flavored multimedia experience built around the shore, with the signature pieces composed of scraps of more conventional paintings which had been destroyed by a hurricane. One could easily stop for restrooms and water in the building and there was a sort of art vending machine among a small gift selection.

During my first visit to Charleston a few years ago, I took one of their daytime carriage tours and left feeling... underwhelmed. I didn't learn all that much, the tour wasn't especially memorable, and I wrote that I'd rather have explored the city on foot. Fast forward to my most recent visit when one of my friends wanted to do the Haunted Carriage Tour. Since it was something different, I happily went along and I'm glad I did. Our horse, Ron, was a 2,000 pound French Percheron and wow.... talk about a workhorse! From what I observed, the horses seemed well cared for despite the small stable. It was fun learning a little about Ron before we set off. Our guide, Matt, was informative, engaging, and did a great job mixing Charleston history with the haunted stories. While I'm not really into ghost tours, I still learned quite a bit. In fact, my favorite takeaway wasn't haunted at all - it was learning the difference between a graveyard and a cemetery. This tour also had a digital component as we were prompted to scan the QR code to see photos of the individuals/"ghosts" he was talking about. The tour also gave us another opportunity to see Charleston from a different perspective and this time around I enjoyed riding through the historic streets by carriage. Overall, this experience was much more enjoyable than my first. The company clearly has these tours down to a science and if you're deciding between a daytime tour and the haunted evening tour, I'd surprisingly recommend the latter. I'm glad I gave Old South another chance.
