Charleston Upper King Street Culinary Tour Guide: Georgia 4 stops is pretty low for a food tour, especially since the last one was gelato. Our 3rd stop was a chicken quesadilla and tortilla chips with salsa and queso. I would never call that a "culinary experience". The mussels on the first stop was good but it was shared and some people are gross. A woman I was sharing with used the fork she ate off of to pick mussels out of our shared bowl AND double dipped her bread in the mussel juice. Individual small portions would've been better especially considering I traveled alone. I chose this company because it was local, when I typically use the same one, thinking it would've been the best. I was fooled. This was my least favorite food tour of all my travels. I like food tours. It is said one learns more about a city through its food than anything else and I find I agree. The Charleston Culinary Tour was delightful. I elected to partake in the Downtown Charleston Culinary Tour that explored the French District and the Market District. Simon was great! He led us through pausing to interlace history in between delicious bites of food. It was through John that I learned the French District was never about a group of people living together, learned about the architecture and how they borrowed much from the Caribbean, and discovered the limits on building heights. This isn't a tour that is going to go to the very best of Charleston to dine - the very best doesn't need the exposure - but delightful fare was ever present. We did the Kitchen Experience and it was wonderful! It's a cooking class where we made a delicious Apple dessert with sherry whipped cream, pimento cheese dip, and homemade buttermilk biscuits. The menu wasn't posted ahead of time, perhaps because it changes but we were very happy with the selection. It was a small class, with only 4 people attending and that made it intimate and very hands on. I loved the experience and it was definitely worth the money. At the end we got to enjoy the items we made. Not enough for a meal, but a snack and dessert. Our instructor was so kind and patient, she made the class really informative too. We learned a lot about Charleston history and each dish. Lastly they sent us home with recipe cards and lots of information. Highly recommend! read more

We were really excited about this tour as we've done a few in other various cities! For $85, we went to 3 restaurants and 1 dessert spot. We chose the upper king street tour in hopes of exploring some trendy new places. Our tour guide MiMi was great and suppppper knowledgeable about Charleston and the history of various foods! However, it was a bit disappointing as it didn't feel like a true culinary tour. There are so many amazing, eclectic spots on upper king and 2/3 of the spots left a lot to be desired. Would love to see things like The Pass, Bonny's, Indaco, Prohibition, etc. In other tours we've done we've gone to 6-7 spots so I was disappointed to hear we were only going to 3 spots. I would rather go to more places and get smaller samples from each. read more

Highly recommend going on the culinary walking tour . Be sure to arrive hungry for food and knowledge. You'll receive plenty of both! Our tour group was 11 people. I liked the introductions and ice breaker exercise that was held before we set off. It made it easier to chat with others in the group. Our tour guide was John. He was a font of knowledge on both food and history which were the areas of interest for the group. We went to 4 different restaurants where we were greeted pleasantly and served promptly. Everything was delicious! I would do it again in another visit. Not going to tell the restaurants as it's part of the experience to not know. On one of our many trips, we decided to take part in a culinary food tour and I am glad that we did. It was a great experience and being able to share with others and enjoy stories was priceless. The food was wonderful. There were 5 stops and even though we missed the 1st stop, we caught up and was happy we did. Each stop offered us their signature dishes along with depending on location, a cocktail. One of the places, Guy Fieri visited and that makes it even more of the place to be if you ask me. We did the downtown culinary tour with John, who was a delight. He was very knowledgable about Charleston history, the food and was a joy to talk with. We went to 3 restaurants, since it was raining John brought our dessert back to their offices so we could dine inside and stay dry (much appreciated). The food was good, but compared to other food tours I've done there wasn't as much food offered, it was more of a sampling of items at each spot with a portion of cake for dessert. For the price you pay, some people might feel it is not enough food but ultimately we did leave feeling full. read more

Perfect day for walking the hIstorical district with Simon, our guide and host. Interesting guy. The food stops were good and in total we had a decent meal. Our tour was at 1pm so the restaurants easily accommodated our small group. Collard greens are really tasty when cooked right. We enjoyed the food and history. It was a very disappointing tour! We did the Upper King Street tour. Based on the description by the owner on Yelp, I was expecting a more elevated tour rather than chicken & waffles and shrimp po boy.... so much bread on this tour that many of us didn't even eat the crusty cheese bread 'Chef's Choice' at the wine bar. The tour ended at a run down 'gameroom' and we were served a mediocre banana pudding in a plastic take out cup and a fried Oreo. SO disappointing!!! read more

He truly enjoys his job and gives many different styles of tours throughout Charleston. His laid back approach to if we wanted to stay a little longer at each location or move on so he could share a little bit of history was excellent. He also made it a point to speak to each person on the tour and ensure they were enjoying themselves and answer any questions he could. Now onto the food....delicious. I would definitely recommend doing this at the start of your stay in Charleston as it will give you ideas of places you might want to go back to and enjoy their other dishes. Our tour of Upper King Street was great. We have been to Charleston several times but hadn't really explored this area, so I wish we'd had more of an opportunity to learn from the guide on things such as the history of the neighborhood and restaurant scene - she was so knowledgeable and could speak on anything the group asked her, but the attendees were also all getting along so well we spent much of our time chatting with them. We had four stops: French restaurant 39 Rue de Jean, retro Rarebit known for its Moscow mules, serve-yourself wine bar Uncorked, and sports bar The Alley. I hate to complain that there was *too much* food, but the portions were all very generous and by the last stop we were getting quite uncomfortable and barely touched the food offered there. Most food tours I've been on have offered a bite at each stop, but these restaurants had tables set for us when we arrived and served full plates! I don't eat seafood and took a chance listing my preference on the reservation, knowing that there might be a chance that I don't get an equivalent substitution, but all the alternatives were excellent and substantial. There was another member of the group with dietary needs and she also received great care and treatment. I would definitely tour with this company again. read more

Our last full day of adventures, our morning started with Hoon Calhoun's Chef's kitchen tour. If I had to use one word to put a name on Charleston I would say HOON! He was EVERYTHING I pictured Charleston to be. Proper, warm, funny, knowledgeable about his city, the list goes on! Hoon was a HOOT! We stopped at a few places on our walk and it was a delight to hear him talk. I enjoyed his company. We met 2 chefs and talked to them for a little bit, but the rest was more like a walking food tour, with history of the establishments. I would love to just have lunch with Hoon and just listen to his stories!! Although the goodies we tried were delightful. Our next trip we would like to try a farm to table tour, with Hoon as our leader!!! read more

I had high hopes for this tour as I have done several other food tours in cities that we have visited. I do give our tour guide John 5 stars for his extensive knowledge of Charleston history however the food with exception of first stop was subpar. I was looking forward to touring more of the French Quarter however the 4 restaurants we visited were basically on a 2 block expanse. The first stop at Ruby Sunshine was great - Brioche French Toast Bites and a Fried Chicken, Egg Biscuit sandwich. Next stop was at Charleston Crab House some Frogmore Stew (basically a low-country boil of shrimp, potato and corn). I was expecting food stops to be a little more spaced out and right after that we went to Well Hung ( was hoping for Carolina BBQ) but it was one skinny slice of braised ribs on some potatoes). The most disappointing was dessert as I heard we were going to Carmella's Dessert Bar, which I has heard so much about but we were running short on time and our guide had to grab some pretty package dessert in a small plastic cup. It was basically a little cake with a couple of layers of cream and Carmel sauce. I didn't even finish it. Looked nothing like any of desserts in dessert case when we stopped back later. read more

I have been on 11 Food Tours and never had to go out to dinner afterwards. We had four food stops. We informed our guide one month in advance we do not eat red meat. We were given potato salad and cold slaw fist stop. Second stop 1/4 cup lettuce and 1/4 cup cheese whiz. Third stop was the deluxe part, 1/8 cup shecrab soup, one hush puppie, and a teaspoon one grits with a shrimp. Fourth stop one praline in a bag. Come on. For $85. If you do nothing else during your stay in Charleston SC, take one of the Charleston Culinary Tours. Dustin was our guide and he was amazing. Knowledgeable about both food and history (and not just Charleston but global), he paced the walking well and created a relaxing ambiance. The portions of food were more than expected and we ended the tour with full stomachs and a desire to head back to some of the venues in the future. So worth the time and cost. My family loved the tour and the first 3 restaurants we were allowed to sample in were great. However, for dessert they took us to the street to get pecan pralines from market street sweet. Which was the cheapest option since you can get free pralines anytime you stop in. I paid for 4 restaurants and only got 3. The praline company isn't even from Charleston, they are home to Savannah, GA River street sweets. Also the guide had us act out a duel at duelers alley which was fun for everyone in the older demographic but kind of weird for everyone else. The guide also got incredibly close to the female patrons which made me feel uncomfortable. My boyfriend even felt it and got in between the guide and I during multiple occasions. read more

My family and I went on the Upper King Street tour and had a great experience, even with having already been to two of the places we visited! Our tour guide, Gary, was very knowledgeable and did a great job at getting the group chatting with each other. Probably the best part was getting to chat with the others in the group! The food, of course, was great too. Each of our four stops offered us some of their signature dishes. On our tour, we went to HoM, Rarebit, Rue De Jean, and Paolo's Gelato. Rarebit was our party's favorite, and we intend to go back there for dinner sometime. I won't spoil exactly what we got in each place because that was part of the fun! If you have a dietary restriction, make sure you tell them when you sign up and they work to accommodate that. Someone in the tour group had a shellfish allergy but hadn't noted it beforehand, so while they made the accommodations they could, she had to skip some of the samples. read more
