We have struggled to find New river Gorge tshirts, but this place had a great selection at reasonable prices. Stop here!

Outside the building is a walkway that goes down a significant number of stairs to a platform that looks out towards the bridge. It likely has some of the best views of any National Park visitor center you're ever likely to find. It's also a good place to get information and load up on water before heading down into the gorge where amenities are limited and cell service is generally absent. There's no charge to stop in.

There are restrooms inside but the building is not dog friendly. They did have the national parks passport stamp so my husband was very excited about that. The building has some interpretive exhibits about the gorge, the famous bridge and the recent regions history. There is also a viewing area. I feel like the center was closing earlier than I expected it to, so we had to make our visit a quick one but it is a great jumping off point for spending time in the park.

Great business! They were so nice and helpful. But a word of warning--seriously, you have to…read moretransport your own kayaks to the lake on your car. We were looking at the map and had read the website, but thought that we might just have to "transport" (walk) them across the street to the lake, but NO, there is NO lake access at the Outfitters. Luckily we had called that morning to verify and had enough cars to transport all of the kayaks we needed. They said that they aren't allowed to transport them since the state owns the lake. They provide straps and help you get them on your car and strapped on, but pay attention because you'll have to do it yourself when you bring them back. It was a bit challenging but we managed to do it without any of them flying off of our cars. Definitely get there early before your rental time so you can get everything loaded. We put in at Salmon Run and had a great time on Summersville Lake! The store itself has lots of different items you'd need for a day at the lake or camping. Waterproof bags, sandals, cold beverages, snacks, some gift items, local decor.

The adult kayaks had no ropes, tie-downs, or any way to secure personal belongings. These weren't just missing a few extras--the kayaks were extremely basic and bare. Without a way to secure your belongings, items can easily fall out of the kayak and be lost in the water. When we asked about ropes or tie-downs, we were told there was nothing available. We made do with what we had, but we shouldn't have had to. For a family renting four kayaks, we expected better. Based on today's experience, we would not use or recommend Lakeside Outfitters to our friends or family. There are other rental shops that can provide a better-equipped experience, so I would strongly recommend looking at those options before renting here.
