Art festival loving girl here, so I had to stop in during there Summerfest. The outdoor music, food trucks/beer tent and outdoor homemade art vendors were all so fun! The inside building was filled with local artist creations from lamps, pottery, jewelry, walking sticks, music instruments, blown glass, 2D art and food. After finding out pepperoni rolls are the unofficial state food of WV, we picked 2 up, and made a 4 pack of WV beers. We spent almost 2 hours browsing everything in this shop. You can watch glass being blown and pottery being made through the artists windows. Highly recommend this place if you like local and unique art. Ps, you purchase your things at customer service. It was a bit confusing, a stranger stopped to ask us where to pay so we weren't the only confused ones. read more

What a great idea for a rest area! It's kind of like an art fair that's always open. Pottery, t-shirts, jams, glassware -- there's even a window where, if they're working at the time, you can even watch glassblowing. And, there's also a food court if you're hungry. I recently had a trip and I was so excited to stop for a late lunch. It has been at least 2 yrs but prob longer since I've been here. I used to travel and stop here often and it was amazing. The craft area of handcrafted merchandise has become not as sophisticated and high end workmanship. I noticed that change the last time I stopped through so that was disappointing. I used to often browse for gifts but that time nothing much to see. But on to my main thing -- the food. I'm actually heartbroken that now it's not in any way what it was. I learned that a few years back The Greenbrier Hotel stopped operating the dining room. And it shows -- they have remodeled and added tables. You no longer go through the cafeteria w the chance to see the grill and the food. And the food is pretty low to average score. The fried green tomatoes used to be pan cook w cornmeal and now battered and deep fried -- terrible the vegetable plate used to be amazing but barely edible. The cornbread used to be a large tender square delish but now a couple of tasteless muffins. My plate was served quickly and the food was barely warm. My friend's meal was very average, the salmon. The other was the soup and a side vegetable. Again average. I'm not sure why they lost The Greenbrier but it's not worth the cost. Still a nice place to walk around and stretch your legs but the food isn't worth the price and the crafts not at a high level. So a very disappointing meal. So you've been forewarned. All good things must come to an end. read more

Just a great little place to stop during your travels and get a little stroll in and exercise your legs , use the restroom , shop , and grab a bite to eat or just a snack. I like supporting local artists and was able to grab a few gifts for my loved ones. Clean and more relaxing than some of the rest stops because it sits back off the highway read more

I've been coming/stopping at Tamarack for ten years now--even I can't believe it! I first stopped here on the way to a Habitat for Humanity trip in NC when I was a graduate student. And to see the way this rest stop/art gallery/museum/gift shop/bookshop/cafeteria has evolved over the years is amazing! I love how they're focused on curating books, merchandise, and even food from West Virginians. If you pass by here, you definitely want to stop! I always recommend it to traveling folks. There's indoor space, outdoor tables, RV/motorhome parking, and space for your pets (they can come inside). The bathrooms are always orderly and clean. Told no by cashier. I explained wasn't asking for a substitute. I just don't eat.potatoes. Asked if she could check. This place is amazing! They have an area set aside for RV's and campers and we occasionally spend the night parked here. Quiet and safe area. Most mornings we have breakfast in the restaurant. The sourdough French toast is out of this world! Bring your appetite! Three huge slices of French toast with the yummiest fruit compote topping you can imagine! Full of berries and berry flavors! Best place to stop on road trips when passing through. The shopping has lots of locally made and sourced items for sale--everything from wooden cooking utensils to local cookbooks, local art pieces, and more. The restaurant here is also SOOO TASTY, and it actually uses locally sourced ingredients! I spent about the same or less money at this restaurant than I would have at a Cracker Barrel, and yet the food was even better than Cracker Barrel(which is hard for me because I love Cracker Barrel). I had the rainbow trout with a side salad and sweet potato fries, and it was so fresh and delicious. I totally forgot to snap a picture of the food, but please eat the yummy food here and enjoy supporting local businesses. You won't go wrong! read more

When driving on Interstate 77 in West Virginia, you see signs for "Tamarack-The Best of West Virginia". After driving by for years, at the advice of a friend we made a stop and have since been back many times. The Tamarack Marketplace has just about everything from an artisan's viewpoint. Instead of junky crafts you see at so many places, you see local art of all varieties. We looked around the entire marketplace the first couple of times we visited. but all subsequent visits were on account of the excellent food court. Food is catered by The Greenbriar Resort and it raises the bar for a food court several levels. We both ordered chicken pot pie as we have on most other visits. Outstanding does not adequately describe how good this dish is. Huge chunks of chicken and a crust to die for makes this dish perfect. Since COVID, you now order at a "temporary" station and your food is brought to you. Even though it is a food court, staff is very attentive with refills and anything else you might need. Deserts range from peach bread pudding, coconut cream pie and cherry cobbler. Tonight like most visits, we were to full to have desert. Reasonable prices and outstanding food makes Tamarack a great stop. read more

We decided to stop here for old times sake and was going to just grab a quick breakfast at one of the fast food restaurants but the lady in the gift shop suggested we go to the restaurant up in the Tamarack. My husband and u both ordered the breakfast plate. Eggs were seasoned well, potatoes were tasty, grits were perfect (most places you have to add salt and butter but not here), bacon was cooked to perfection and the biscuit was out of this world. I was only planning to taste the biscuit because I don't usually eat bread but I couldn't stop at just a taste. Don't pass this place up if you are driving through and have the time. We literally stumbled upon this spot leaving our hotel the morning we were heading out of town. I was so blown away by the facility I walked away wondering why there aren't more places like this around the country. Part gallery, part shop, part educational center, part restaurant and cafe, part bookstore, and so much more. I loved exploring their offerings like ceramics, blown glass and fused pieces, wood carved figurines and instruments, coal pieces carved into little figurines, quilts and other hand sew pieces, locally made food like jams, jellies, baking mixes, chocolate, honey, etc. There's also a gallery with paintings, sculptures and figurines made from unconventional materials, etc. It's built like a circle so walking through it is easy and you won't miss a thing as long as you keep going in the same direction. They also have several studios behind glass that you can look at while browsing their wares. The studios include ceramics, glass blowing, woodworking, textiles (there may have been one more but I'm blanking on it). I love that they offer these space along with an opportunity to showcase and sell their work. If I were in the area I would love to take a class or workshop here. I can't speak to the food here as I did not eat at the restaurant but I did get some pepperoni rolls to go from the cafe and those were total bangers. I also got a friend who had been kindly watering my gardens a gift, a beautiful ceramic bud vase and some maple syrup. She absolutely loved both! It's not a undoable drive from us here in Detroit so I still keep one eye on their events calendar. I hope we can make it for a performance or workshop one day! read more

Beautiful stop when traveling on the West Virginia turnpike. The facility is clean, and parking is ample. The entire place is like a large doughnut, so no matter which direction you go it's a big circle. There are plenty of restrooms, a little soup and sandwich shop to dine at with small tables, and an abundance of local art. We came during the holidays, and the facility was nicely decorated for Christmas. Although we did not eat at the Tamarack, I did take a look at the menu and the prices. Food was a bit expensive, and all of the art on display was also pretty pricey. But definitely unusual gifts up for sale, if you're looking for something unique. read more

This was a surprise! We didn't expect much except chain restaurants in the hills of WV. The food was surprisingly good for QSR-type/cafeteria restaurant. I can't quite put my finger on what exactly Tamarack Marketplace is, so I'll just list some of the things I observed about it. It looks like a small indoor mall inside. There are little areas to shop for local West Virginia products, like wine, honey, baked goods, artwork and artisan creations. In another area is a gift shop and ice cream parlor. In another area is a restaurant. In another area is a coffee shop. In another area is an art gallery. The inside is shaped like a big circle, so as you wind your way through, you'll eventually end up where you started. OK, now the outdoor space. There's a patio area where you can dine outside or just sit and relax, with beautiful plants and water features all around. In another area is a small playground for young kids. There are outdoor statues here and there. Oh, and this place is super dog-friendly. There are doggie water bowls at the entrance, and dogs are allowed in the patio area. There's lots of grass and space to walk your dog, too. Tamarack Marketplace is a lot of things, but basically, it's a great place to stop and use the restroom, stretch your legs and get a cup of coffee and snack before heading back on the road (like we did). It's an ideal road trip rest stop in West Virginia. read more

We have heard for years that the Greenbrier resort is responsible for the food. they heavily advertise the Trout. so I got some with a bit of slaw . it came with a tangy tartar sauce . I think lemon butter would have been better. That was what came with my companion's salmon. he got green beans and mushrooms for a side. both dishes were well done. not real exciting but reliable. I was happy to finally get the trout. We ordered fried greed tomato's and they were crappy yellow ones. read more

It's more like Tamaracket. The signage is horrible trying to get out. There is a road out the back of the plaza that routes you to the area with the next exit and you can get back on 64-E. Beware-the plaza is completely changed. It used to have many restaurants, a Starbucks and lots of bathrooms with a small gift shop. When you get off the exit, it is now a plaza that has parking broken in small groups for parking. It wasn't awesome. It's hard to find a parking spot. Now the new building is a very large gift shop and to get to the bathrooms you have to walk through them into a smaller restaurant area. When you leave it's easy to miss the road that gets you back on 64-E, and if you miss it you have to pay a toll to Tamarack to do a U-turn to get back on 64-E. This used to be our go to but not anymore. If there were better signage it would really help a lot. read more

Order Kids cheeseburger and french fry West Virginia Hot Dogs with slaw, chili, mustard and onions. The food was just what we needed after a day of visiting The New River National Park which is just a short drive up the street. Needed a break so this was a cool stop. Browsed some shops & ate at the restaurant. Fried chicken, sweet tater fries & coleslaw. It's a big lovely complex with warmly decorated retail store, working studios for resident artisans, a fine art gallery, a theater, A Taste of West Virginia food court, and the Tamarack Conference Center. Bottom line: It's a great place to stretch your legs, eat, use the restroom, get inspired for more time on the road, and maybe buy a hand crafted piece of local artisan art. read more

Perfection is the only way I can think to describe this place. It's basically an upscale mall stocked only with regional artisan wares Including the Market. Our meal was beautiful, true to the roots of the cuisine and absolutely delectable. The chicken potpie had a flakey crust with a velvety chicken, peas and carrots mixture underneath that was savory enough to illicit memories of food made with from love. The fried green tomatoes were exactly the right mix of corn meal and flour with no sauce overwhelming the green tomato taste. Too many times I get fried green tomato's prepared with so much sauce that it distorts the flavor of the fruit. Not here! They got it right and true to the dishes roots. Well worth the stop and if you can stay for a few hours and support the local artisans, it will be time well spent. It's right off the interstate, dog friendly areas and plenty of parking. Staff is gracious and accommodating too. A perfect place to stop and spend time soaking up the regions best. read more

They have a new restaurant here and it's pretty good for the cost. You walk up to order, get a number, and they bring the food. They have simple food like burgers and chicken sandwiches, but they also have entrees. I was skeptical about how the quality was going to be, but it was good. They also sell souvenirs, art, and snacks in the building as well as have restrooms. The only problem with this place is that the parking itself is quite a hike to the building, and then it's also quite a walk to the restrooms after you enter the building. I need a knee replacement, and it was a difficult walk. If you need to stretch your legs and get some food, this is a good place to stop. read more

I would stop here regularly when this was run by the Greenbrier and the food was outstanding. Now with the generic copycat that has replaced it the food really wasn't worth the detour off the interstate. I got salmon over rice and the salmon was dried out and hard as a rock. I also got strawberry rhubarb crisp, but the bowl was completely filled with and whipped cream and had a tablespoon or two of Barb or strawberry jelly at the bottom. It was terribly disappointing. I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt that it was a bad day, but I'm not making that detour again. read more
