He took us to the back country away from the chaos of the park. We found some fresh ice tucked into a little cut with no one around, it was amazing!! I had climbed before, but my partner hadn't. No stress at all, he made sure we both had an absolute blast! Can't say enough about Spence. He made sure we had all the equipment we were missing, was incredibly positive, experienced, courteous... the guy is a rockstar! Did the entire Perimeter Trail the other day...clocked 6.2 miles in just under 4 hours…read more Started in the am at the trailhead located in the parking lot across from the Ouray Visitor's Center (which I highly recommend). You'll understand as you begin your final descent. As you start your initial ascent and climb the wood stairs into the hillside, enter the cliff path...a .8 mile slightly narrower trail than I'd prefer and a drop-off...but hey, the views are stunning! You can see the Ouray Hot Springs and more! As you keep on trekkin' on you'll start to "hear" before you make it to the gorgeous Cascade Falls!!! Chill, explore...even hike up behind the falls if that's your thing! I think I was pretty "ok" until we passed through the tunnel after the upper Box Canyon Bridge. We almost took a bail-out trail back into town along the way but persevered. There are actually a few bail-outs along the trail. Anyway, there were some sketchy narrow, steep, rocky-dusty-slidy, drop-off sections along the trail that gave me the heebie-jeebies. If you have a fear of heights, this may not be for you. For the majority of hikers out there I'm sure it's easy, but nonetheless make sure you go prepared. 1. Depending on what time you hike, be sure to eat a healthy meal before you go and bring some extra snacks just in case. 2. Signage isn't the best and is lacking "you are here", so I'd recommend taking a photo of the trail map before you head out. 3. Staying properly hydrated is key along the trail. If you've got a camelback that's great! 4. Take breaks when needed and don't feel pressured by any of your overzealous hiking buddies...it's supposed to be fun, safe and not a competition. 5. A walking stick or trekking poles can prove very helpful! Many people leave sticks at the trailhead(s). If you use one be sure to leave it behind for the next person. 6. Wear appropriate shoes for hiking. Yeah some peeps can hike in Croc's or Chaco's, but not highly recommended. Enjoy the trail, be safe, and take some pix! The views are beautiful! Be Happy Outside!

We picked the Jeep…read moreup on a Friday evening as we came into Ouray and took it out all day Saturday on high clearance road and mountain passes in the Telluride and Alpine Pass area and returned it just before dinner that evening. The owner was super nice and helpful and very responsive to our calls about the reservation and making sure we would be able to pick it up that evening. He had the exact Jeep in stock that we were looking to rent (a two door Rubicon - practically brand new!) even though our reservation was made rather last minute. The Jeep was in excellent condition and performed wonderfully. We are not new to Jeeping or off-roading but these were some of the most technical trails we had done and we felt totally confident in the vehicle. And when asked, he was happy to discuss different trails, routes, and features of the Jeep. There are a lot of choices for rentals in town and we are very happy with the choice we made.

We spent a week together exploring Durango and the attractions here. One of our favorite experiences was white water rafting with Mountain Waters. The staff was super communicative and helpful. We booked a moderate run with class 1-3 rapids, since we had a big range of ages (my Dad is 77 and we had a party of 10 with ages ranging down to my 10-y-o son). They advised that this would be best for our family, and they were correct. I'd love to come back and do some class 3-4 rapids now that we have had some experience. One of my Earthwatch colleagues had this place on her "Bucket List". So after a long Friday out in…read morethe San Juan Rift, we stopped at Penitente Canyon for a hike and a few cold beers. Years ago, Penitente Canyon served as a place of worship for Los Hermanos Penitente. The Brothers, Spanish and Indian men of deep faith and commitment, preferred to live secluded in the foothills and canyons of the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo Mountains to practice their religion freely. In some areas you can see historic/religious painting left behind on the rocks. Penitente Canyon, while quite secluded, has also emerged as one of Colorado's premier rock climbing areas. The area is part of the 7,529 acre Penitente Canyon Special Recreation Management Area of the BLM. Our group had a wonderful time hiking the canyons, clamoring over the "Rock Garden" and watching climbers in various stages of ascent and decent. It's a beautiful area and well worth a trip in this somewhat remote region. Our late afternoon visit was also the perfect beginning of a busy weekend and a great opportunity to just hang out with new friends.

In Telluride, Colorado for a long weekend and decided to check out the white water rafting. The…read morewinter snowfall was great and there is still lots of snow on the peaks. My wife had heard that Mild to Wild rafting took great care of their clients. Last year at this time, we were wading up the San Miguel river / stream and fly fishing. Shallow water, tranquil pools and great fishing made it a different weekend. When we booked this, I thought it must be a mistake as this stream did not seem strong enough for rafting and narrow in width. What a difference a year makes. The river was full, fierce with heavy water and good class 3 rapids for the next 1 1/2 hour. Big rocks, fast water, big snags and quick currents were the norm today. One had better stay in the boat, as it would troublesome swimming in 42 degree water. Alyssia, our guide was fabulous and serious about following her instructions. She navigated the rocks, snags and fast water. She maneuvered our boat well. For the next 1 1/2 hours, we had 3-4 foot swells and worked the entire trip. We have rafted many rivers and this was one of our shorter trips but a 5/5 on adventure. For a great adventure, beautiful scenery and a gorgeous day, raft with Mild to Wild. You will have a fun filled and adventurous memory for life.
