We went to the Cape May Ferry Summer Concert Series. It takes place on Wednesday evenings all summer. It was free, take your chairs and coolers. One of our favorites- Fat Mezz' was performing last night, they were great and so was the venue! Watching boats and the ferry' coming and going on a lush green lawn watching live music at sun set made it a great night for us. Our grand daughter, my husband and I had a blast! If you know me, I don't fare well with being on open water that I have no idea how deep it is. Guess you can say that I have a fear of water. But I try to push myself to experience things, even it is through white knuckles and a tapping foot. I booked my trip on the Cape May Lewes Ferry about two weeks out. That way I knew what time I should show up and to secure myself a spot on the boat. Having never taken this ferry before I did my due diligence and educated myself on everything I needed to know. The best way to secure you spot is to go their website ahead of time. Select whether you are a one-way journeyman or if you will be returning. They will need to know how my passengers, whether you will be towing anything, motorcycle, walk on, etc. Have your pass ready upon driving up to the gate, they will scan it and tell you which lane to go to. Once there, all you have to do is wait. No need to worry about getting out of your vehicle and walking over to the visitor center, most people will be doing that. I got out and ventured over to take some pictures and explore. During your wait, there are multiple things that you can do for entertainment. There is a playground if you have children. There is a store inside for souvenirs. There is a place to grab some food. There are trails to walk, benches to sit, and one more very interesting thing. There is a mini miniature golf course outside. Want to use it, go inside to the information desk and ask for some putters and balls, once you hand over your ID to ensure you return with items. When it nears time to start boarding the boat you will hear an announcement to return to your vehicle so that they can do a quick inspection of your vehicle. The staff will then start directing which vehicles will enter the boat first. Motorcycles first and then they go down a lane. I was lucky to be in a lane that was basically first and made my way onto the boat. I was instructed and guided to a spot on the boat. Take note that once you are on the boat to pay attention to instructions. Do not let your alarm system on. As the motion of the boat can set it off. One passenger did not pay attention and their system was going off for a good few minutes. I grabbed a few things from my vehicle and headed up to the decks and took a look around. Snapping some pictures and went to the stern to see the remainder of vehicles load onto the boat. I also stayed back here as we launched. Cover your ears if the horn is going to bother you. After we launched I made my way indoors to find a table and chair to sit at and eat my snack. The seats are comfortable, and when sitting in them you don't feel the motion too much. I was able to enjoy my food and drink before I got up to wander about. Other things to do while on here. Visit the gift shop. Grab a bite to eat or drink in the cafe area. There are also adult beverages available. Take a seat on deck to watch the waves crash and the land in the distance get nearer. Try not to stumble too much with the rocking of the boat. There were several times I almost went down because of this. The day I took the ferry the weather wasn't the best, spitting rain and windy, so that made for choppy waters. Once on the other side, with all of us back to our vehicles, we started to venture into Delaware. Of course, waiting our turn and being guided off the boat. Definitely a unique way to get around and one that cuts miles and minutes off your travel time. read more

Date of Excursion: August 3rd, 2025 7:30am After spending a few days in Cape May on my road trip it was time to make my way home. I decided on taking the ferry for this part of the journey and I could not have had a better time. I did take the advice of the web site and made a reservation and paid on line in advance. The drive from my motel in Cape May was a pleasant one, very little traffic at 6:30 in the morning (Sunday). Made it to the entrance and received my ticket for boarding and continued to the line-up. Not sure what to expect but it was different than getting on a plane I guess. Security walk the line and everyone open their trunks for inspection and a little later a security dog walked the line. I do feel safe. After a about a thirty minute wait we started to head to the terminal and board the ferry. I got there early so had a spot up front so I was one of the firsts to drive aboard. I think motorcycles are the first to get on so they could part in the areas other vehicles couldn't. Once you park you stay in your vehicle till the horn blows then the boat is all yours to explore. I was really impressed with the upper deck where the food and beverage station is, nice selection. And the inside seating is first class all the way, though I preferred the outside with views of the bay. It was an 80/90 minute trip that went by before you knew it. The last time I was on this ferry it was with my parents in the 70's on one of our summer road trips, I think we were heading to Florida. I'll will make this a fixture on my next road trip. We took the Cape May Lewes ferry last night and I could not recommend it more highly. We showed up with no reservation in our 20-ft high top van and were able to ferry from New Jersey to Delaware in that van for under $40. I still can't believe it. All of the staff that we encountered were incredibly friendly and helpful. I was a little nervous because I had never taken a vehicle on a ferry before, but the woman who made our reservation and charged us told me what to expect and where to park. She also explained that we could go inside to shop and eat at the cafe. We came during the off-season so the restaurant was closed and we did try to play some complementary mini golf outside but the staff said that is seasonal as well. Still, there was lots of information about the area and plenty of brochures to read inside the fairy terminal. They also had informational videos about things to do and a cute little shop with hot chocolate and sweatshirts. When it was time to board we headed back out to our van and drove onto the ferry. We stayed in our vehicle the majority of the time because we had read that dogs were not allowed in the enclosed areas of the ship. However, when I went inside to use the restroom and get a warm pretzel at the snack stand, I did see people with their dogs inside, so I'm not actually sure what the rules are, but it was really dog friendly. The trip took about 90 minutes and although it was dark for us because we left at 6 p.m. I imagine the scenery is beautiful during the day. While visiting Atlantic City, it was a beautiful day and I wanted to do something to take advantage of that. So I looked up ferry in the area and I saw there was a ferry from Cape Cod to Delaware. I paid $18 round-trip. I was a Foot passenger however there is an option to bring your car and I believe it was $85 round trip. The ship was huge and had a bar. It had a snack bar it seats up to 800 people and can take 100 cars. It was a nice relaxing ride. It was about an hour and a half. Just keep in mind that there is security checkpoint when entering both ports on each side. My only complaint is that the boat moves very slowly. I highly suggest this on a nice beautiful day very relaxing have a beer and enjoy the scenery. read more

Your drive just got shorter! Passenger or passenger and vehicle, this is a great mini-escape with lovely views. Breaker lines, light houses, the line between ocean and river waters, and sea air all made this the best way to get home from Spring Break. Once parked we bought refreshments (lunch or snack size available) and souvenirs, including a sticker for our trailer in its only excursion off land. Our dog was happy to stay back in the trailer but social pups looked happy here. The staff were great, and even as rookies this was an easy, restful way to go. Can't wait to go back! read more

This is the first time I've been on the ferry despite being "locale". The process is pretty easy, you pull open to the gate they tell you what line to go in after checking your ticket and you sit and wait. My surprise was the facility or visitor center whatever you want to call it while waiting for the ferry, Filled with shops, restaurants and bars for some reason I didn't imagine it being like that . I didn't have time to partake in any of it but it's was a pretty nice area to sit and relax in while you wait for the ferry, tons of outside seating for those nice days while you eating or having a drink with plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the wait. The staff were friendly and it was clean which is a surprise for Jersey . The ride itself was pleasant, the ferry is also setup with a bar and a small cafeteria style galley to purchase foot or drinks. There's ample sewrinng inside and outside of the cabin depending on whichever you prefer. All in all it was an enjoyable experience and I'll definitely be returning to check out some of the restaurants and bars. read more

On a warm summer day in August, you just can't beat a ride on this ferry. Honestly, it was even better than lying out on the beach for me. The boarding process was organized, efficient, the ferry interior was clean, there were drinks and snacks onboard and lemme tell you - the restrooms were dang nice. I know, not what you look for on a ferry, but hey, we're all human. A reasonable 80 minute ride from Jersey to Delaware on a boat with three levels from which to watch the water, and clear views of the Delaware Bay and the Atlantic? Not too shabby. If you're lucky, you might even spot a couple of dolphins frolicking in the waves, like we did. There are state parks on either end of the ferry as well, so you have recreation options once you disembark- straightaway. $100 for a round trip with a car and two passengers in August. A very good option to go to ocean city if you are traveling from NJ ... kids liked it too. It is about an hour and 15 mins sail from cape May to Ocean city MD . Easy booking ... costed ok - we paid about 37$ for our van and 10$ per person . Ferry had lots of seats inside and outside the deck . I really liked the push back seats .. very comfortable . They also have a gift shop and a small cafe with coffee and some snacks . There is also a bar on the 2nd floor. Very organized . Very comfortable . Had to wait an hour to board .. restaurants inside the ferry terminal weren't that good . Overall a good experience... read more

We did not start driving on until the time the boat was suppose to leave. Despite being one of the first cars to arrive when they put you on the boat it's random and we were the last to get off. The ferry between Cape May and Lewes is only 24 miles and takes about 90 minutes. Or you can drive through Dover, Wilmington and Vineland in about three hours (if there's no traffic) for 165 miles. That's an easy choice and it lands as my round number 18200th review! After the previous ferry departed, I headed inside for a bathroom break and a beer. Once the next ferry started loading, I headed back to the van. A different attendant asked if I wanted to go early "Yes, sir!" and a Delaware State Police officer took a very brief look in the back of my van (for what?) and I was one of the last to board. Fabulous, off to New Jersey an hour early on a sunny afternoon! You're not supposed to spend the journey in your vehicle, so after the announcement to disable alarm systems (which seemed to be missed by some), I headed upstairs. Lots of comfortable seating in the cabin and many seats outside in the fresh air of the Delaware Bay. Sights to see and a small gift shop where I purchased my postcards and a fridge magnet. Before too long, it was time to head back downstairs to the van and disembarkation. Super easy and very efficient because they do this a dozen or more times a day. Five stars for an interesting travel experience and I'm pleased that I was able to fit my 9'6" tall van on the ferry for a good time. Cape May Ferry Rock band event. Bought 2 tickets (weeks in advanced) and boarded in Cape May All seating taken by Lewes patrons. Lewes patrons brought chairs on which was never advertised that you could. Band to play to and from Lewes for those patrons. Cape May patrons only get to hear band on the way to Lewes. We left and got our money back. Upper deck should be ticket only admit! I was so glad I did not bring a large group as I had planned. We left before ferry left and staff said they don't blame us for leaving. We had no problem getting our money back at the customer desk. read more

If you're driving from Southern New Jersey to Delaware (or vice versa), you have an interesting choice to make. You can either drive all the way up and around the Delmarva (Delaware-Maryland-Virginia) Peninsula, and that will take you on a 3 hour road trip that covers 169 miles. Or, you and your vehicle can jump on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry and sail on a 17-mile voyage across the Delaware Bay. That 85 minute option is what we chose yesterday. It was $30 for our car, and $8 each, so our total was $46. There's a lot of seating options on the ferry, inside tables and seats, rows of seats by a TV, and outdoor seating on both decks. We started inside, then moved outside to enjoy the sun and the sea breezes. It was a terrific experience. We bought our tickets on-line, and found their website very easy to navigate. I've seen some on-line discussion about whether the Ferry is worth the expense and if it really saves you any time considering the loading process and the sailing time. That may have some merit, but that discussion ignores the X Factor of how enjoyable and pleasurable the consumer experience is to have that sea breeze and sun accompany you across the Bay. read more

Last day in Delaware. I decided to take the ferry to Cape May NJ. I'm glad I did. The ride is 81 minutes. Very comfortable seating for the trip. We saw dolphin yay! They also served refreshments. Very smooth sailing. Took the shuttle to Cape May. At day end I reversed the trip. All for $18! A great deal. If I'm ever in the area again this will be at the top of my to do list. read more

The ferry is great, convenient, and pretty and all but the system for booking has been broken since at least last year which makes a ton of people not allowed to get on the ferry they booked. If there aren't enough tickets for that day, sometimes the system still shows as available and it books you. But the date on the actual ticket is the wrong day. Example: I booked a ticket for June 22, it says June 22 on the confirmation webpage. But when they email you the actual PDF ticket it says June 21. So when you show up on June 22, they tell you they can't take you and you have to wait on standby for the next available ferry. This is the THIRD time this has happened in a year, and because of their booking mistake, you'll have to wait on standby for the next available ferry, which could be 3 hours on a busy summer weekend. Ask anyone else on standby, I've met at least 10 people who this has happened to too. I've spoken to the ticket booker and manager directly and they've told me they know it's been broken since at least 2023. It's still happening in 2024 that they are selling tickets that don't exist and wasting your time. So be careful, check your PDF emailed ticket right after purchase, take a screenshot, and call them immediately if the date is different from what you just booked and *hopefully* someone will actually help you read more

What a cool experience - you can take your car, kids and dog on board and it's so simple! The ride goes by much quicker than you expect and it was so easy and stress free. After taking this ferry with my car on many trips over the years, I took the roundtrip ferry as a foot passenger with the shuttle to/from the Visitors' Center. There were many parking spaces available for foot passengers to leave their cars overnight if needed and at no extra charge. It worked out very well and the ferry ride is delightful as ever with seating outside to sample the fresh air or inside if you prefer if too breezy or hot outside. The main reason the trip went so well is that the staff at the ferry terminals and on the ships are very welcoming and pleasant. They made me glad to be a repeat passenger! read more

If your looking for a nice respite from the drudgery of I-95 and, want to take an easy ride north and south through this region of the country; the Cape May - Lewes Ferry is a nice alternative. Cape May is on the southeastern tip of NJ at the end of the Garden State Parkway. The ferry terminals are located in Cape May New Jersey and Lewes Delaware. Both are nice towns to visit pre and post ride. The ride itself is relaxing and about an hour and half long. The three times I have taken it, the seas were calm with only a lite rocking of the boat. Be mindful to disable your car's alarm. They tend to go off with the pitch and away of the ferry. There are nice restaurants in each terminal and they have a snack bar onboard. read more

Bottom Line: A convenient trip and fun adventure between Lewes, DE and Cape May, NJ. Cape May, NJ and Lewes, DE are both really neat towns and it is nice that you can easily cross the Delaware Bay on the ferry to visit the other town. My husband and I drove to Cape May on a Friday morning and enjoyed the day in the town before taking the last ferry over to Lewes. We drove our car on and for the two of us and our car it was $50. That was more than I would have expected but it was fine. The checkin, loading and unloading process was very organized and went smoothly but we did depart and arrive about 10 or 15 minutes late for reasons that I don't know. We had some time to kill before our departure so we went inside the Cape May ferry terminal. It is really nice! The place was deserted, probably because of COVID and it being end of the day but I bet it can get really busy. We enjoyed looking around the gift shop, gazing out the windows and picking up some literature on the Lewes and Rehoboth areas. The gift shop had a little bit of history on the ferry so that was nice. I also noticed that there was a miniature golf course outside so that was interesting. Due to COVID, being tired and it being mostly dark, we stayed in our car for most of the ferry ride. I did venture inside to get a soft pretzel from the snack bar and to use the restroom. It seemed clean and comfortable inside but due to COVID that space was reserved for walk on passengers so I went back to the car with my pretzel. I appreciate the steps taken to support social distancing and requiring masks to be work properly. read more

This is my first time going on a ferry and I am impressed. The process is simple we booked the trip across online. We came an hour early through a gate where they scanned our ticket. We waiting for security to check out cars and then they directed us where to park. It was a truly quick and easy process. The ticket is 50 dollars which in my opinion is worth it. Took my car with me to Cape May from the Lewes ferry terminal. This terminal was nice. A playground for kids, a free mini golf course, tables to sit /dine outside and safe viewing areas of the water. There is a bar/restaurant, but it was closed when I was leaving. Easy process of bringing your car/passengers onboard. Just show your pre-paid tickets and they scan them. You will be placed in marked Lines for your car to drive/board onto the ferry. You have to be back in line with your car about15-20 minutes before the ferry departs so they can get the cars on board. Security does come to check your tickets, you must open your trunk (I guess for them to see if there's a stowaway there) and at this location a police officer with K-9 came by to check the cars. Police station is right next to the ferry. AVIS and another rental car company is also available to rent here once you arrive. Total ride took about 85 minutes, but it seemed like only an hour after getting your car on board. There are 3 levels. Top deck (with a bar), middle deck (bar/eats, tables to sit at) and lower level where the cars are parked. read more

As mentioned by someone else here, this ferry is really for saving time if you are in the very southern part of NJ and want to get to the Delaware beaches or anywhere there about. (Or obviously in reverse) Depending on where you are and where you need to get to, it can be a choice of a three - hour drive or a one - hour ferry ride. You MUST book in advance and the price (depending on what kind of mileage you are getting with your car) will most likely be cheaper than the gas you would use, not to mention the time on the road. There are places you can go into attached to either side of the ferry run. I guess it is just me, but I would rather get there at the recommended time and use the wait time in the car to catch up on some things while waiting to board. The boarding (and unboarding) experience is EXTREMELY efficient, so there really is no reason to try and jockey your timing for a specific lane or anything like that. Just go where they point you and enjoy the ride. Once on board, you pretty much have the freedom of the ship. I do not believe there would be a problem if you wanted to wait in your car. However, this is the time to get out and stretch your legs. If the weather is great, enjoy the sun on the top deck. If it is not, there is ample room inside where there are some amenities too. When you arrive at the other side, they give you ample warning to get into your car, so you will be ready for the unloading process. From there, you will be quickly back on the road to continue your journey. read more

We get out into the water about a half an hour and we're told the ferry is going to turn around and go back to Port because ONE person on the boat coming to LEWES forgot to get off so they have to turn the boat around and take them back I'm trying right now to get all the passengers in front of the boat to give this asshole a boo...
