The credit union confiscated his debit card and refused to return it. March 12, 2026 I was going to run some errands and my roommate (also xhusband of 20 years) asks if I can swing by his CapEd Credit Union and make a DEPOSIT for him. Something I have done, for 41 years, hundreds of times before for several family members and friends at several different banks throughout the years. Making a cash deposit at a bank/credit union has never been an issue....until.... I drive to CapEd at 7450 W Thunderbolt Drive in Boise, ID. I plan to use their atm. It's not working. What was supposed to be a 2 minute atm transaction turns into a 2 hour long horrible experience. So now I have to use their drive thru teller service. I grab the tube n toss in my roommates debit card and his cash. I send it off and a few moments later a teller appears on the screen. "Hello Kevin..." He says, confused because I am a female. I say "Ooh hi I am Kevin's roommate. I tried to use your atm but it's not working. Can you just deposit that cash for him into his account please. Thanks." Teller says he will need my ID first. I say okay no problem and send my ID. Now a different teller comes on the screen and I repeat to her "Ooh hi I am Kevin's roommate. I tried to use your atm but it's not working. Can you just deposit that cash for him into his account please?" She says "So our policy says that we cannot do your deposit and at this time now we cannot give you the debit card back either. We can only release it to the person whose name is on the card and your name isn't on it. You're not getting the card back. Sorry." I say..."What? Are you joking? I've done this so many times before and it has never been an issue." She says "Nope. Not joking. You're not getting the debit card back." I sternly say "Yes I am. You will return my items. My ID, the cash and the debit card I sent you. Now. I am not joking." She says snarky "Nope we won't. We don't have to. You aren't getting it back. Have a nice day. Goodbye." She turns the screen off. I collect my ID and the cash and go inside where I am promptly met by the bank manager waiting for me at the counter. "Yes I want the debit card I sent thru your drive thru back." "Due to our policy" she says "that's not going to happen, we are unable to release his debit card to you. It's not yours. We are keeping the card safe until Kevin can come in and retrieve it." "Safe?!" Then I explain that "He is my roommate and my xhusband of 20 years. We have the same address. You can check his information. You have his info. You can contact Kevin and get his permission for you to give me his card back." She replies "Ooh we are contacting him, don't you worry." I say "Great! Then you can get his permission." She says "Nope. You aren't getting his card back. We are contacting him to let him know we have found his card and it's safely in our possession." I tell her "This shouldn't have happened at all. I originally tried to use your atm machine. It didn't work BUT IF I had used the atm after making the deposit it would have returned his debit card to me. Correct?! Yes that is correct. If your atm doesn't have this made up policy of keeping someone's debit card then why does the credit union do this? Don't you have the same policies as your own atm? Logically I should get the card I had back without question. It's just a deposit." She says "Yes the atm would have given you the card back but we aren't going to." "That doesn't make any sense! Give me his card." I said louder then I explain that Kevin is handicapped and rarely leaves the house which is why I usually do this for him. For years I've made deposits for him at this exact credit union and it's never been an issue before. I've never heard of this policy that they are now enforcing out of the blue. For no apparent reason. She says she doesn't care what I say and it doesn't matter what I want. Then the manager says "It's our policy." I ask her to show me the policy or any notice or poster anywhere where this policy is stated. "I don't have to show you anything." She replies. Sharp and rude. I ask if this is a policy they implement regularly because surely other people have done this same thing. Making a deposit for someone else has to be pretty common. She admits "Sure family members or even friends share their debit cards. All the time actually. It's pretty common." I say "So you admit this is common and happens often but for no reason you are using this new policy against me for no apparent reason." She smiles. I call Kevin. As he answers the phone he says the bank just called him to let him know they had "found" his card and are keeping it"safe" for him until he can retrieve it from the bank. He told them "wtf are you talking about? My roommate was trying to deposit some cash for me and you guys stole my debit card from her. Give it back to her. You didn't find it she gave it to you. She is trying to DEPOSIT money INTO my account... this doesn't make any sense. This read more

I should have paid attention to the many lousy reviews which management seems to ignore because most of their credit unions have bad reviews . Poor customer service. Takes days to get a return phone call, and no follow up. What is interesting is that most of the employees are standing around not doing anything. read more

As much as I like to write good reviews, BAD is BAD Avoid this company at all costs. We purchased a vehicle from Corwin Ford in Nampa and they set our loan up through this company. After sending them auto insurance information at the time the loan was set up, we began receiving harassing letters from CapEd. We gave them our insurance cards, affadavits, etc, along with the phone number to State Farm and they said they would call. This went on for over a couple months and in the mean time they put a $3,933/year policy on top of our loan and began charging us. (This while we clearly had the required insurance). We eventually had our insurance company contact them because it was clear they planned to run what appeared to be a scam for as long as possible. in the end they got an extra $185 for the insurance out of us that we were unable to retrieve. This because we were from Washington and the car sat on Corwin Ford's lot for a week or so before we could come get it and get everything completed. This company seems to steal an extra dollar in any way possible, and it appears to be well thought out. (Read the other reviews and decide for yourself) Be sure to tell Corwin that you don't want to use them or you might get stuck too. Note: I'm presenting this review for both Nampa and Meridian, as I'm not sure which one Corwin Ford selected for our car loan, but I assume they are both the same company at different locations. read more

This company treats customers like complete trash. I will never conduct any type of business with CapEd ever again. Good luck getting anywhere if you have any discrepancies with them as you will never get a returned phone call and you'll never be able to speak to a human on their automated so called customer service line. read more

While the customer service has been adequate trying to do any of my personal banking has been anything but convenient. One example: I have tried to deposit checks in the drive through (all automated) on at least 4 different occasions and had to go in because of machine errors. DO NOT USE.. I have an auto loan through CapEd, which is the worst experience I have ever had. I transferred the money to caped on 11/30 - on 12/2 my bank shows paid. Now on Monday 12/5 my account shows past due. CHAT with an agent, all they would do is tell me that it takes 3 business days for a transfer to work and nothing is reported until the account is past due for 30 days I should have made the payment earlier. CALLED - waited on hold for 1.5 hrs. they told me that a transfer can take up to 5 business days and nothing is reported until 12 days past the due date (CONFLICTING). He said they probably have the money they are just waiting for someone in the back office to click the approved button. Last thing he told me was not to worry about my account showing past due till the 12 days. I am already looking for a different company to transfer my loan to... This company shows no empathy, a total lack of concern about your credit and worst of all a total disregard to your banking concerns. RUN read more

I am so very upset and frustrated with CapEd..tried to cash a check from an auto insurance company to buy a car and was denied cashing it because it was from an insurance company and they stated that insurance companies frequently issue bad checks and they would have to put a two week hold on it. I called the insurance company and they never had any financial institution do that before. I told the young credit union rep that I will lose out on buying the car I put a deposit on..she said I should have planned it better or get a different car...terrible response and even worse customer service. Customer Service went downhill. The rep didn't greet me or count the money out. He took it out from the machine and just handed it to me. I had to count in front of him. He didn't seem to care and ask me if I need anything else. Disappointed about the service! read more

It takes like 4 days sometimes more for checks to be available in your account. They'll let you use the money but then fee you for it

Super glitchy loan system. They kept taking autopay payments even after I paid off the loan.

This bank is basically a Wells Fargo masquerading as a credit union. They are unrelenting in their fees and very unforgiving. During the height of the pandemic I was transitioning from this bank to a different one. I took everything off automatic payments but forgot one. The bill was maybe $20. I had $15 dollars left in the cap Ed account. The bank paid the 5$ needed during the automatic payment and then charged me $35. More than the actual bill.. I called to ask if it could be forgiven, it was an honest mistake. The woman droned on and on that it couldn't. I said ok I'll pay it and I would like to close the account. She said I can't close accounts I'll have someone call you back. No one ever called me back. Next thing I know, I'm getting harassed by a bill collector for $35. Talk about petty. read more

I was looking to purchase a boat so I applied at CapEd online to get a pre approval before shopping. The online application is very short and easy but also very incomplete. After a couple requests for additional information and no sense that a loan pre approval was pending I switch to a different lender that approved my loan over the phone and would ACH the funds to my checking account the same afternoon. The interest rate at the new lender was also at least 1.2 percent less than quoted on the CapEd website. I am not going to try to figure out if the problem is a lack of experience with the loan officer or a general lack of responsiveness with CapEd. Just don't expect fast service. read more

I have never been so disappointed in a loan process for a customer. We have 2 families trying to close on their homes today before Christmas and you all can't seem to get docs to the title company for one of the families. For a local credit union, this has been the most frustrating experience. You have had now 7 weeks to get this loan done and no one will respond to our requests. Docs were promised to Pioneer Title Co. by 5:00 yesterday, and we're still waiting. No one will call me back, the selling agent back or the title officer back. Meh. The girls are nice enough but data errors and problems with their system are a reality. Had one of their ATMs take $100 from me, and had my info on my account changed without my consent. Two stars just for the nice in person customer service. read more

If I could give less than 1 star, I would. Helping a friend manage payments on a loan, and there is less than zero customer service from CapEd. They won't take phone calls, their online system won't register a new online account with the correct information entered. there is no online customer support of the website...essentially all the complaints listed in past reviews. They are not set up to serve the customer. I have online banking set up with national and local banks, and have never had difficulties working with a financial institution until CapEd. I would never recommend anyone to do business with these people. Their website is nearly impossible to get what you want accomplished. The customer service is terrible and lack communication skills at every level. The management is extremely rude and insensitive. They made duplicate auto-withdrawals from my account in the same month and wouldn't apply the double payment for the next month.This is One of the MANY issues Ive dealt with. Horrible Loan Officer Dom Magliari at the loan office. 1st he told me he could refinance my new auto purchase with less that 6% apr and discussed the terms, his colleague called back two days later offering to refinance me at 2.0% high apr than i just financed and stated my credit score was nearly 20 points lower than the Bank who just financed me. Yet i have been a member of Cap Ed for 5 years!! I declined the loan officer offered to apr patch me to get my loan i declined the next day Dom called to discuss the refinance loan that had already been discussed!! I declined his same offer so he the offered a cap ed credit card stating I was approved. He would call me back that afternoon, the next morning he needs proof of wages as my wages were not direct deposited and as soon as he got it and reviewed i would be approved and he would call me back that afternoon, next morning Dom calls and my last name is missing a "letter" so i need to fix it and resubmit so they can process the approved card. I tell him this is such BS i will send the requested document when i have time. I question this "approved" card if they need documents.. nothing is approved if documents are needed, i state he is using poor terminology i am not approved i am pre approved obviously Dom failed miserably in business school on affective communication. Next day comes which is today an no call from Dom so i call him, he trips over his words apologies for not calling yet again yesterday he just got the reply back and now "they" cant calculate earned income from the employment letter. Which states rate of pay and hours per month..so you mean to tell me loan officers can not do basic math? So bottom line 5 years banking, being a member creditscore of 656 financed a 27k car with wellsfargo for 8.4% apr and cap ed wont touch me yet they will give my 19 year kids 1k credit cards who have no credit and not even a member for 1 year. Hmm Capital Educators Credit Union sure doesn't support its members and their loan officers IE Dom is a complete joke!! read more

As a credit union, CapEd is the worst I've experienced. I got an auto loan with them through a dealership. I asked them to provide payment coupons and I think they sent 5 or 6. Made my own coupons. Always paid on time and well over the amount due, except for one missed/late payment. Things can get pretty crazy when your loved one dies. Paid the late payment, but they would not remove the late fee. Then they called after I made the late payment and demanded that I make another payment, so I did, making me a month ahead in payments. Tried to call them several times and was on hold for more than 15 minutes each time. I will pay off the auto loan (almost 2 years early) and be done with CapEd forever. So lame! Had a manager work with me regarding a payment sent to Metro by T-mobile (awful company). She took an hour of her time as we waded through garbage of call center bullshit to find a manager who lazily told us she would be "working" on my 15 day old issue. read more

I've never had a problem with CapEd or this branch location. Their app and website have improved too. We started here with a car loan but the app improvements and newer policy allowing me to download statements for 24 months was enough to get me to move all my accounts over. As a bank they are great. They will review questionable overdrafts and reverse the fees most of the time. They have expanded the lobby hours and have friendly tellers. I've been with them for 3 years and rarely experience any problems. The area I see for improvement is their mobile banking app needs updating. read more

If I could put 0 stars I would. Absolutely ridiculous. I've waited three weeks for a car loan, and left multiple voicemails to my loan officer, and nothing. After a I finally get a hold of her, she claims she still hasn't gotten proof of income, which was faxed in the day of the application! If they couldn't complete the application, and especially after multiple voicemails I expect to be called. It's been over three weeks, and still no car loan. Wells Fargo took 10 minutes.
