I've run quite a few half marathons over the last several years... everything from RunDisney races…read moreat Disneyland and Walt Disney World to local races including Urban Cow, Shamrock'n, CIM, and SF Giant Race and this one still needs a bit of work as it is lacking organization and polish. This is the second year of the half marathon but the twelfth year for the Run Rocklin series of 5K and 12K races. The half marathon had a registration limit of 600. That makes for a nice run that's not too congested. If you want congested, think Disney races. The website definitely could use some reorganization as information was spotty, typos were prevalent, and not up to usual professional website standards. There was a small race expo that had vendor and sponsor tents set up. There were places that the runners would be able to grab orange juice, water, after race snacks, and free food samples. Pre-race bib pickup was slightly disorganized as questions asked were often answered with "I'm not sure or I don't know, you'd have to ask Larry." I picked up my race bib and tech shirt the day before. There were no signs set up to note where the start of the race would be. I assumed that the location of the two sets of Chrono-B tracking mats would be the start line. When the pacers started showing up near the tracking mats, then I figured that I was in the right place. The finish line was clearly delineated and set off with pretty balloons, timing clock, and sign. The race schedule was as follows: 7:45 AM for the kids run start 8:00 AM for the 12K and 1/2 marathon start 8:20 for the 5K start 9:30 for the Kids 1 mile start As I expected, the course ran through Rocklin through mostly residential areas. Miles 1.5-5.5 was a consistent uphill climb. Between miles 2 and 3.5, it was a fairly steep incline. For those who plan on participating in the subsequent years, make sure to train for hill runs. If not, it will catch you off guard and can sap some of your reserves. It was nice to run back downhill after hitting the summit and turning around. Weaving through the residential areas and seeing the beautiful houses made it an interesting run. In every other race that I have participated in, there were more water/ energy drink stations than here. There were no safety stations along the course but I did see a couple of police/fire department vehicles patrol the course. The one thing that kind of worried me was that there were only course safety marshals where there were turns. I think they needed more of the safety marshals to ensure vehicular traffic would not mingle so closely with the runners but we were running through a residential area. There were spots where cars were going pretty fast and we were running pretty close to the traffic. I was kind of paranoid so I would constantly look back over my shoulders if I were running in the direction with traffic. Most of the times we were running in the bike lanes but between miles 1.5 and 7, we were running where traffic flows quickly. The race had a hard limit of 4 hours. After crossing the finish line and hanging around for a bit, I noticed that around the 3 hour mark, the volunteers started cleaning up and started taking down signs. I guess there weren't too many stragglers running at that point but I thought that they should have waited a bit longer? Also, it seemed like the refreshments and food were all but gone around that time. I think they should have a dedicated refreshment section for just runners who would need the recharge after this race. In other races that I've participated in, there is a runners' finish line corral where you are entitled to grab fruit, water, energy drinks, etc... but not here. Here, the food was open for everyone even for those just passing by. I can't say anything negative about that but in the future, for race participants who pay, there should be guaranteed refreshments for them whether they finish in 1-1/2 hours or 4 hours. I was able to grab an orange juice plus, a bottled water, a danish, and a banana after the race. I made sure to only grab one of each so that other runners after me would have some refreshments available but after hanging around awhile, I saw that many runners were only able to get orange juice and water. All-in-all, it was an enjoyable local race. Don't get me wrong. I am not trying to be negative but trying to offer constructive criticisms here. You really can't compare a small-ish local race like Run Rocklin with the big Rock-n-Roll, Disney, Urban Cow, etc races in terms of organization, number of volunteers, refreshments, and water stations, but I think with each race, there should be lessons learned that can be applied to the next race. I wish the best of luck to the race organizers and future races and hope that they will do better next year.

Lucky Run was held on St. Patrick's Day. There are several options: 7 Mile Run-Walk, 7K Run-Walk…read more(4.34 Miles), Lucky 13 Half Marathon (13.1 Miles), or Kid's Fun Runs (1 Mile, 1/2 Mile, 1/4 Mile, 200 Yard Dash). It was my first run, so I decided to do the 7K and had a friend sign up with me. We picked up our bib numbers and t-shirts on the day of the race. I was worried there was going to be a long line, but there wasn't a line at all. The porta-potties, however, had a long line. I would say that we waited for about 30 minutes for her to use the facilities. We missed the start time. The start and finish line was at Davis High School. The course went through the Community Park and the North Davis greenbelts and residential streets. It was narrow at some spots. The uphill onto the bridge in the beginning and then again at the end was killer. I suggest more water stations. When I stopped at the first one, I was asked if I wanted water or Gatorade. "Both," I exclaimed! The course was well organized. There was a lot of people who made sure you were going the right way and cheering runners on. What I found motivating was the signs that informed runners what mile they are on. It helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel. My personal goal was met. When I checked my time online, I did much better than I thought I could've. The results also tell you how well you did within your age division. Now I'm waiting for pictures to be uploaded onto their website. Afterwards, we checked out the exhibitors. There was water, fruit (apples, bananas, and oranges), and bagels provided. I also got some Jelly Belly Sports Beans, SunRype fruit & veggie strip, Zico (Pure Coconut Water), popchips, PowerBar Performance Energy Bar and PowerBar Energy Gel. Sudwerk Brewery was also selling beer. I passed on that. Next year I'm hoping to do the half marathon!

I ran this race in 2012 and 2013, both times opting for the 7-mile distance, since it's still a…read morenice challenge, slightly longer than a normal 10K. Packet pickup is business as usual, on the sidewalk in front of Fleet Feet Davis and you did have options to upgrade shirts from cotton to tech or choose participant medals as well if you didn't already get one (half marathon finishers have their own medal). Parking was tough, considering all the different distances to choose from; the high school lot was full so I parked in a residential stretch of Oak Ave. The route takes you through North Davis Greenbelt, and all runners started together, only to diverge along the course as directed by volunteers, when things start to thin out and you find a good pace. I'm always amazed when the courses meet up again and lo and behold, the half marathon leader (and bike pacer) pass me up on my left. Oh well! I got the black cotton shirt and the participant medal was nicely sized, green/red enamel, yellow glittery ribbon. Wore my bright green Lucky Run women's tech shirt from 2012. A good race, unique in its distance and a nice early way to celebrate St. Pat's!

Shamrock'n is a very popular St. Patrick's Day race. It usually sells out so be sure to register…read moreearly. I did the half marathon. COURSE The start line is just outside the ballpark at Sutter Health Park. The finish line is inside and at the bases. The course goes through West Sacramento, Old Sacramento, Land Park, Downtown and back to West Sacramento. In 2025, the course was mismeasured by 0.2 miles so the distance was 13.21 instead of 13.1 miles. This was at the first mile. I was trying to PR so this messed my mindset since I thought my pacing was slower than it really was. There are some hills early on and eases towards the end in Downtown. The finish line is at the ballpark and at the the bases. It's a great finish and none like any other. The hardest part afterwards is climbing those stairs up the stands after running! TRANSPORTATION/PARKING Free and plentiful parking Sutter Health Park. However, getting there race morning is rough. There is a lot of traffic. Highly recommend getting there early and before road closures. It's impossible to get over from Downtown over to West Sacramento once the roads are closed. There's a lot of traffic on 50 so I didn't bother and ended up parking 1 mile away in Downtown and jogged over. Not the warm up I had in mind. AID STATIONS There's aid stations approximately every 2 miles. Water and electrolytes are offered at each station. The aid stations could use some improvements. At the first aid station, there was an open bucket of electrolytes right at the side of the table out in the open in close proximity to the runners. The portions are also quite skimpy. I literally got 1 teaspoon of electrolytes from one of the aid stations. The other aid stations were better but the amount of liquid was still not enough to hydrate me so I had to take both electrolytes and water at each aid station. . WAVES There are 3 waves in 15 minute intervals. The bibs have different colors based on your wave. They are strict on it and check your bib before entering the corrals. RESTROOMS The best thing about this race is flushable indoor restrooms! Restrooms are accessible inside Sutter Health Park. There's also port-a-potties lined out by the start line. There's port-a-potties at each aid station. FOOD Post-race food is at the food concession stand. I got a wrap (choice of veggie or turkey), bar, chips, and nuts. There's beer too. Bib and ticket are required to get food and drinks. They do have one food concession stand that sells food also. The race itself is very festive. Everyone is decked out in St. Patrick's day attire. Cheer stations. Overall, a good fun race

It's a decent event. If you are coming east to west highway 50 it's annoying on the exit. Plan…read moreaccordingly. Parking is decent. Law enforcement is clearly present. Maybe more than normal days. To an extent. Only around the bridge. As a "fan" you are NOT allowed to enter through the exit, which is the fastest way to get to see your runner finish. This year, there was some pr*ck there acting like he was super excited to tell you you have to walk "around" to get in... only to be met with a line of people taking forever to get ",in,". It's quite annoying. The event gets worse by the year. Including what the runners get. Gotta show this n that to get your food, ect. It's more of a chore than fun time. Don't expect much do it for your own goal that's it.

Course starts at Capitol Mall and all of the courses (1-mile, 5k, 10-mile) include traversing on the iconic Tower Bridge. I did the 5K run and it was also nice running along Sacramento River. Some sections of the course were a little narrow, which could cause some bottleneck-ing especially if you're gunning for the finish line (I'm one of the slower runners so I had some spacing). Overall an enjoyable run. Received a shirt (runs a bit small FYI; slightly slim fitting) and a participation medal. The last complimentary thing is a sandwich but only for 10-mile runners. There is food and drinks available for purchase via a few food trucks. Springtime event (April) and registration with early bird pricing starts as early as in December. Credit union membership not required (credit unions are simply sponsoring the event).

This park is a gorgeous addition to the Bridgeway Lakes area. True to its name, the park catches…read morethe last rays of the sun every evening and is a hot spot for young families to come play. There is a small play structure for children and a couple picnic tables. While it's relatively small in size, the park is well-kept and nice for picnics, pick-up games, or walking laps (albeit short ones). We love to bike here and relax/read/picnic in the shade. The only downside is that there is no public bathroom!

Sunset Vista Park is a 6.1 acre neighborhood park. A local kids soccer league practices here in the…read moreevenings in fall. There is a jogging path (you'll have to do quite a few laps to make a mile), a children's play area, and a picnic area. Yolobus also has a stop here for their local route.

There wasn't much to the smaller play area for younger kids but enjoyed the slide. They have a huge tower like playground for older kids. The park met our needs for the moment.

I've seen different age groups enjoying this park, mostly kids during season games and some practices. I have seen adults come out and use the space for batting practice. I have also seen people out there with their dogs playing with them and walking them around as it is an open space. I appreciated the city of Sacramento coming out and keeping it clean and making sure it was kept up with all of the maintenance with the trees. This is a great park for you to check out with plenty of parking. Make sure to read the advisory signs such as how to interact with kids near the restroom and the information on when this park is open and closed.
