If you like to have a big TV crammed in your face at the dentist, you're sure to have that wish fulfilled, too. If you like an "expert" dentist who makes all of your decisions for you, Dr. Hohlen fits the bill. However, if you feel it's your own responsibility to be informed and say yea or nay to the chemicals and treatments being put into your own and your children's mouths, this may not be the dental practice for you. Although I went in asking nicely about facts from a systematic review article, I felt pressured and felt that my voice (and the evidence) carried little weight. Next, (and this could happen anywhere, I guess) a dental hygienist called my (young!) son by the wrong name while ushering him back to a chair and waving me off as if there was no need for me to follow. We quickly sorted out the misunderstanding, but I'm glad my son didn't end up getting whatever treatments were on "Sam"'s chart! Then, I was not impressed with his manner as he brandished a large needle aimed for my needle-phobic child's mouth. I felt his manner was not suave; granted, it is hard to be suave when you're holding a large needle. But he looked at me as if he expected me to control my child into not freaking. Then he said to my child, in frustration, "You need to do whatever your doctor or dentist says." I'm sure he didn't mean that to sound so creepy. But actually, I'm teaching my children to be informed and take responsibility for their own health. Dr. Hohlen seems to hold an exactly opposite belief. (PS: It all worked out. Dental care was administered, and no lasting trauma.) Finally, he assured me that a service would be billed as "this", because "he's hoping to take care of my teeth for a long time to come," and when the bill came... it was billed as "that." This could be as simple as a miscommunication between the doc and the staff who do the billing, but still not cool. He is young, and people do learn and grow. I hope a few years from now it'll be a different story. But I wanted to write this for the information of people who do want to take responsibility for their own health choices.

I had to get a filling once while I was between jobs without insurance and had to pay out of pocket. They told me upfront how much it would cost. They were very reasonable. The dentist is wonderful with my toddler too! He is very understanding and flexible. My toddler is at that age where he is difficult to work with but, the dentist does a great job! He communicates with me about what I feel is most important at our visits as well as what he recommends. I really appreciate that!

Sure enough, I needed a root canal. Got another appointment for 2 days later, surprisingly. The root canal was totally painless! Even the Novocaine shot was painless. The procedure took less than 45 minutes, and they even took 5% off my bill for paying the whole amount on the spot. I never had such an easy time at the dentist before. The staff were all friendly and helpful too. If there were 6 stars, I'd give this practice all of them.

After speaking with our insurance company, we found out Fallbrook never submitted a pre-treatment estimate to insurance at all. Instead, they gave us an estimate they "came up with" on their own, without ever checking with insurance. They demanded we pay for their mistake. Shady business. To make things even worse, they didn't offer any kind of payment plan to help with the unexpected charges. Completely unprofessional and frustrating to no end. Only ever talked to one girl at the reception desk and she was not helpful at all. I would not recommend this dental office to anyone. I've already shared our experience with many people, and several have canceled their appointments because of what happened to us. Avoid this place. They do not value honesty or their patients.

Yet when I was in the office, the staff insisted I had to pay right then and there and even said they would "never get paid" if I didn't -- which was both untrue and manipulative, since payment had already been confirmed. During a phone call, a staff member actually said to me: "Do you even understand how we are not getting paid and how we then did this work for free?" If I was treated this way, I worry that other patients -- especially those who don't feel able to speak up -- may be experiencing the same kind of disrespect. When I mentioned I was traveling abroad, the staff used that against me, saying they had to collect immediately or else they wouldn't be able to "get a hold of me." A neutral assumption would have been: "She's traveling, she'll be back." Everyone who travels eventually comes back -- that's what made their comment so strange. But instead, their words implied suspicion -- as if I couldn't be trusted to return and pay. That assumption made me feel singled out and racially profiled. What made this especially insulting is that I had already given them my Social Security number -- the most official form of identification there is. Yet they still claimed they 'couldn't reach me.' What did they think, that it was fake? That kind of suspicion reveals not just disrespect but racial bias -- because if I were someone else, would they have made the same assumption? As if I could just vanish without consequences, when in reality I'm a responsible adult with a verifiable identity. When I found out my insurance had already paid and that the office caused the issue by using the wrong address, they didn't apologize. Instead, they made me spend three hours on the phone with my insurance to fix their mistake -- essentially treating me like their unpaid labor. A month later, it was causing sharp internal pain and sensitivity to cold. When I went back in, he gave it a 30-second glance, did a bite test, and immediately blamed my bite -- no X-ray, no cold test, no real effort to investigate. When I explained the pain felt internal, he cut me off with "Oh, you don't trust the professional?" -- arrogant and defensive from the start. I calmly tried to understand what he was seeing because it felt like we weren't even on the same page. Instead of a conversation, he kept claiming I was "arguing" simply because I was asking for clarity and solutions for a problem he clearly didn't want to deal with. It got worse when he pulled up a picture of my tooth, pointed to the wrong part, and tried to gaslight me into believing I had told them it was the back, when I'd clearly said the front from the start. When I asked the assistant to confirm what I said, he called me "petty" and kicked us out. Their office coordinator, Haley, wasn't any better. When I reached out hoping for accountability, she told me not to expect an apology since I was no longer a patient. She gave a weak, obligatory apology on their behalf but made it clear she needed to "hear their side" -- as if any part of this was acceptable or up for debate. That kind of leadership sets the tone for a practice, and it shows. Save yourself the time, money, and frustration. This office cares more about ego than patient care, and their professionalism is nonexistent.
