Beautiful space that used to be a National Biscuit Co. (Nabisco) bakery in the early 1900s, in downtown Albany. The show I saw was in the black box space, but they also have a main stage. As a theater person, I LOVE to see these spaces redone and used for the arts community. This place is an asset to downtown Albany and I am excited to go back next year and see Once on This Island on the mainstage. read more

I love this theatre. It's so intimate that there really are no bad seats in the house -- to the point where my actual preference is to sit in the middle of the absolute last row -- a perfect view every time. Every production that I've seen here has been excellent, the staff are friendly, the seats are comfortable, and you can bring drinks into the theatre, which I really appreciate. A favorite date night for my partner and I is to grab a pizza and drinks right next door art Albany Distilling Co./DeFazio's pizza and then head over to the REP for a show. Albany is lucky to have this place and I'm looking forward to the next show! read more

I've lived in Albany all my life and have walked past this theatre hundreds of times. I had the chance to see a live performance recently. I wonder why that parking garage right next to it was closed. With something going on at the Palace and something going on at the TUC, parking was a challenge. Albany should open that up on weekends like this. This little place of performing arts is at the edge of downtown near the Palace Theater. It's a small intimate theater. It has an open cafe where you can grab a coffee or a beer. You are allowed to bring in your drink during the performance but no food! I really enjoyed the atmosphere and will keep a lookout for future performances. Cool place! Price was affordable, not crazy expensive! read more

An Allstar Cast! Evan Jay Newman shines as Valli! Jersey Boys was brought to life by a phenomenal cast and crew at Capital Repertory Theatre! As I looked beside me I could see couples holding hands who were being magically transported back to their first time seeing the Four Seasons. Evan Jay Newman lit up the stage as Frankie Valli and delivered a performance I can only describe as magical. What a fabulous triple-threat performer! Watching Newman, and well as Justin Scott Brown as Tommy Devito, Brian Michael Henry as Nick Massi, and Jeffrey Kringer as Bob Gaudio brought Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons to Albany right before our eyes. Shannon Rafferty delivered some of my favorite lines in the show as Mary Del Gaudio, and Kyle Garvin had me smiling so many times as multiple characters! And, Nick Anastasia as Joe Pesci was a Riot!!! The singing was superb, the acting we could feel in our souls, and the show as a whole I'll be fondly remembering with a smile for years to come. The latest review was in 2019.... Years ago, under the original Director, the performances were world-class, and I've seen many in the US and in Europe. After that Director left, the quality of productions became so bad, that after trying a few shows, I never went back, unfortunately. Charming. That paraphrases what Colleen wrote over six years ago. And I totally concur. It's personally embarrassing that I haven't made it into theREP before last night. I'm going to blame my absence on a deeper love of food than theater, and the challenges we've had in the past with finding a reliable babysitter. What I never realized was how small and intimate this space truly is. Surely there is a place for grand theaters with their balconies and large stages, which are capable of hosting national touring blockbuster productions. But there's something amazing about being able to see the glisten of a tear on an actresses face as she sings a particularly heart wrenching song about Armenian children being killed by Turkish soldiers. Yes. I was there, thanks to the good folks at Proctors who offered me a ticket, to see Some People Hear Thunder. The world premier production was described as a musical and a love story set between New York and Turkey around the time of World War I and the Armenian Genocide. It's a powerful show. Next, I'm hoping to return to the space to see Pretty Much the Best Comedy Show with Dave Hill. The two events couldn't be more different. But perhaps with more experience in the venue, it will earn its fifth star. I do love the location. And I love the charm. And the intimacy. Heck, even the bathrooms were clean. It may not have the architectural wonder of The Egg, or the grand elegance of Proctors, but getting to see a show in a small, comfortable venue is a real treat. read more

What a great venue to see a great show. We had tickets to see BEAUTIFUL, a story about Carol King. If you're a King fan, it is a must see. If you don't think you're a King fan, you likely don't know all she wrote with her first husband Gerry Goffin, or others, or by herself. Up on the Roof, The Locamotion, Will You Love Me Tomorrow?, You've Got a Friend and many more. These and so many more were all part of the show. Acting was superb, and sets were simply done but highly effective. And the singing was FAƁULOUS! There are no bad seats in the house, although the seats are a bit narrow. read more

What a wonderful space! I had no idea this place existed before last week. This year, I opted to subscribe to Proctors and our first show was "The Royale" at theRep. It certainly helped that the show itself was outstanding. The theater itself is an intimate venue with no "bad" seats. There's a lovely, small cafe and seating area outside the theater. This particular evening, we enjoyed some live music in the lobby that started about an hour and a half prior to showtime: a very talented singer/guitar player. Fantastic venue. read more

I am very much appreciative for my free tickets from Yelp to see Blithe Spirit. The theater doesn't have a bad seat, it's small and the seats are set up in a semi circular fashion set close to the stage. They have a wonderful lobby that serves cocktails. They even had a signature drink which was associated with the play! They offer discounted parking across the street and there are plenty of places close by to have dinner before the show. The play was wonderful. I suggest you look through the program to see what's coming to Capital Rep in the future and plan a night out! Enjoy! read more

"How Water Behaves" 1/16/14 was a delightful surprise! Clever writing and unusual plot, enhanced by good actors with great comedic timing. The second act was hilarious! Only complaint: it was hard to hear the actors, some more than others. I'm sure there were jokes I would have enjoyed if only I could gave heard them. The singer between scenes was puzzling until the stories all wove together in the end. A wonderful choice- go see it and enjoy! read more

This theatre brings back memories, high school memories to be exact. Needless to say it's been a while since I've been here. (I live near Proctors so I don't make it to Albany to much) It's the perfect place for a fun night out. You can go out to eat at a restaurant near by then grab a quick drink or 5 in the lobby of the theatre. (They allow the drinks in the theater but not food ...wink wink, they know what they are doing). I will never complain about ticket prices or prices for beverages - what's the point of going out if you have to watch the wallet. It's a small theatre so it's almost as if the show is just for you. It's pretty cool and makes for a fun experience. It truly made the comedy show even better in my opinion. Not only were the comedians funny but again it was almost as if they were talking right to you. No trouble finding a parking spot and overall it was a really fun evening. read more

I've been faithfully seeing plays at Capital Rep since The Woman in Black. With the exception of a couple of missed plays that first year, I have seen every performance since. I have so enjoyed seeing live theater, that I have yearly gone to see a Broadawy show on Broadway. Came for the closing showing of Blithe Spirit. Really neat place. The ushers and everyone working were very helpful and courteous. Everyone was genuine and make you feel very welcome. I am very excited for them to move into their new building. I hope it is extremely successful for them. To refute what the 1st reviewer (Colleen) wrote, I must state that Capital Rep is NOT a community theatre, but is, in fact, the only professional Equity LORT B theatre in the area (if you go out to the Berkshires and down south to Hudson and up north a bit you can find a FEW more Equity houses, but Cap Rep is the only professional theatre in the immediate area). Capital Repertory (it's often known just as CapRep) does great work, hires a mix of local professional actors as well as huge talents from NY and other regions, and offers a variety of shows that come directly from Broadway and Off-Broadway. The theatre boasts many Regional Premieres and is a training ground for great actors, directors, and technical artists throughout the region. Do not miss their shows. Period read more
