Really awesome place. A traditional feel and a wholesome atmosphere. Prices aren't bad and it's in the heart of the city. Clean and simple.

This is a small, nice and clean theater in Schenectady, NY. The snacks are reasonably priced, and the staff are pretty friendly. The staffing is limited usually takes a little longer to get checked in and get your snack. Plan to be there early if you dont want to miss out on the movie as they don't play a lot of advertising like their competitors. I end up using this rather than the regal that is near my home as its usually less expensive and also I end up getting some offers through my cell phone company which has a partnership through Atom which cost me $4. Even without the offer the tax are priced @ $8 for majority of the shows. Good place to come with the family, enjoy sometine in downtown Schenectady and get a bite to eat. Always a great local theater in Schenectady. Low prices compared to regal cinemas. There are multiple showings throughout the day. Movieland offers senior and kids pricing like 1/2 off adult prices. Theater can be improved by more deep cleaning in seats, floors, and bathroom. Women's bathroom was very gross every time I went. Some toilet flush aren't on auto. It came be improve sanitary wise. read more

Does anybody go see movies anymore? So here is this big fancy movie theater in the middle of downtown Schenectady. It's a Saturday night. A little after 9pm. And the place is like a ghost town. When I was a kid, movie theaters were the place to be on a Saturday night. And the 10pm shows were always the most popular. The late show would start around midnight, for the true night owls. Maybe Schenectady is an earlier kind of city. There was a lot that was broken at Bow Tie Movieland. The marquee over the box office was dark. Instead, movie titles and showtimes were printed out on a piece of paper that was taped to the counter. Then the ticket machine jammed trying to print my ticket. Do I mention that when I tried to pay for my $10 ticket with a $20 the only change the cashier could make was in one dollar bills? Since I was the only one at the box office, the cashier physically walked me to the ticket taker to let him know I paid. Except the ticket taker wasn't at his post. And because I had no ticket, I didn't know which theater my movie was playing in. Usually there are digital signs above the theater doors, but those were dark too. When I did arrive in my theater, just a minute before show time, I was the only one there. At 9:45pm. On a Saturday. To see Three Billboards. The movie was great, by the way. The sound was good. The picture quality was fine. The theater was pretty clean and in good repair. I did however find the screen a bit small. But that was easily fixed by moving down to the fifth row. That also solved the problem of the annoyingly bright floor lights, which thanks to stadium style seating are obnoxiously visible from practically every seat in the house. The bathrooms were also clean and well maintained. And for what it was worth, everyone I encountered was friendly. All in all, it was a rather odd experience. If you're downtown, want to catch a movie, and Proctor's isn't showing one, this is your spot. It could be worse. But hopefully this theater will get some TLC, and the experience of going to a movie might get a little better. read more

I love this theater. It is always clean, they always have a popcorn and soda combo and the theaters have nice seats. There is free parking available across the street in the garage. It is only a short walk to the theater. They don't offer tons of films like the mall theaters but they do offer the most popular films currently. My favorite part of this theater is that not a lot of people use it. You can wait one week to see a film, go to a late night showing and end up being one of six people in theater. This is my go to theater for big films like Star Wars on opening nights. The big theaters will be sold out but these folks will have plenty of seats for pre sale even the day before. read more

Wow! A very comfortable and urbanely designed multiplex in downtown Schenectady, with excellent sound systems in each theater. Unlike mall moviehouses, this one is devoid of lobby video games and sullen teens. Beer and wine is available (only in the lobby), and the employees actually seem to take pride in working there. If you're in the mood for a mass-market flick, I highly recommend this place. read more

I have got to say I used to love this theater absolutely loved it and always went there until I moved away for a bit in 2014. Upon moving back there has not been a opportunity to go to the movies with my children who are now adults. So as a Christmas gift we went to a 5 pm showing of Avatar on December 27 2022. The lobby was nice and fully staffed and had a nice smell to it, that's as far as the positive remarks go. Upon entering the theater #5 floors were filthy littered and sticky from the previous patrons, seats were covered in something wet so we just sat on our jackets that we washed upon getting home. Then came the loud obnoxious teens up on the top row, then the row behind is kicking our seats, and then in front of us about 5 rows . The movie was about 10 minutes in to the actual movie and they not only were still loud and chatty giggles and as if drunk or high (these are teens mind you) they are on their phones and very disrespectful and disruptive, a other patron asked them if they would mind being quiet as we were all trying to watch the movie. They continued to gab gab gab and giggled. The ones that asked them politely to be quiet left the theater not to return. The girls continued to giggle and talk. At no time were there any movie personal in the theater to check or at least glance as I watched for anyone to come in. Then leaving these 2 packs of girls on set of 3 one set of 2 separate parties carried on into the hall to leave and lobby. Popcorn was stale tasting and kernel loaded and flavorless. It's pretty sad as the theater was nice at a time when I would go frequently and now I just can't see why I would return or recommend it to anyone. read more

How have I not reviewed Schenectady BowTie? This is our favorite place to go see standard first-run movies because it's rarely crowded, is nicely located downtown, and is pretty clean and neat. The staff have also been uniformly nice and cheerful, which is a serious improvement over EVERY other chain movie theater in the area. No exaggerations here. It's not that they're unusually great, it's just that the other chains are uniformly bad at this. That said, there's nothing particularly special here. It's not a restored old theater, and the small stadium-style theaters are comfy but utterly like every other theater. Concessions are standard and pricey -- although you can theoretically buy a beer or wine here, you can't take it into the theater (the area needs a pub-theater, although maybe New York's bizarre liquor laws don't allow it) and they never seem to be open when we're there, so I can't say it's a feature at all other than being a tease. Coffee is K-Cup, which at least beats the awful "Americano" the malls serve. You can park in the parking garage across the street and up and get validated, but the garage is a hassle; we usually park in a small municipal lot on the other side of state (there are several, off Jay and Broadway and Clinton) which are free after peak hours, and the walk is not any farther away than the garage, and you save the hassle of garage parking. However, if you're around during business hours, they'll charge you for more than two hours. There is the big advantage here of the location as well that there are good places to eat nearby if you want to do the dinner and a movie thing - Mexican Radio if you are going high end, all the Jay Street coffee/sandwich places if you're there during the day, Bombers, and the new Italian place associated with Proctor's whose name I can never remember. All quite decent. If the parking and concessions were a little better, or they had better bargain pricing, we could easily see giving this five stars within the category of "first run movie theater" but as it is, still a place we make a point to go to when we're looking at movies that are running in more than one location despite the drawbacks. read more

Really frustrating experience at this movie theater this evening. I'd been before and it was fine, nothing outstanding but a solid experience. This time was outstandingly bad. There was an issue with the projector I noticed as soon as previews started. The video was slightly out of focus. I checked with another group of moviegoers to make sure I hadn't suddenly developed vision problems. No problem, I went and told an employee who assured me he'd let his manager know. 20 minutes later the movie starts. Still out of focus. So I go out again to the front and tell a different employee, who apologizes and assures me the manager is heading in to fix it soon. I tell her the movie is starting. She says she understands and apologizes again. Except, no one ever fixes the focus. It's off the whole movie. I don't know if they thought I was lying, or if no one ever cared to check, or they couldn't fix it, but we all had to watch a blurry movie. I didn't want to miss any more of the movie so I didn't make a fuss for a third time, assuming that surely someone would get to it, but it didn't happen. It's great that this place has friendly employees, but I don't go for a friendly chat, I go to see a movie, and this theater has demonstrated it can't do that well. They have successfully gotten rid of me. Hopefully the headache I got from watching that movie will leave and never return too. read more

Sadly this Bowtie location no longer has the super special popcorn - I think it was Jack and Harry's - that made this theater so much better than others in the area. The popcorn is now simply meh movie theater popcorn and they also no longer have the Real Butter that they used to offer but now have the yucky yellow oil fake stuff. It is a bummer. read more

Wow. I know what you are going to say: why would I ever go to downtown Schenectady to see a movie? Well if you haven't been in downtown Schenectady in awhile you are in for a nice surprise. The area around Proctor's theater is thriving with new restaurants, hotels, shops, a sparkling new YMCA and state office buildings. Simply incredible. A wonderful part of this expansion is the Bow Tie Cinema. It is state of the art, with multiple stadium seating theaters complimented with every modern convenience. The theaters are spotless and, in addition to conventional movie food, they serve hotdogs, pastries and the like. They even serve beer and wine -- although you must consume these drinks before centering the theater. They is plenty of parking across the street in an indoor parking garage which if fully lighted and cameras everywhere. Bow Tie is the best kept movie secret in the Capital Region. It is a modern state of the art theater in the middle of Schenectady's growth district. It is like the theaters at Crossgate's and Colonie Center but cleaner and far less crowded. Don't let antiquated views about "Schenectady decay" prevent you from coming. It's simply a joy. read more

A great clean theater option! When I don't want drive to Colonie mall and deal with that extravaganza I go here. Its never too crowded, with friendly employees. They serve real butter on their popcorn which makes it very tasty. I have asked a couple times later in the evening if I could wait for fresh popcorn to be popped and it was not a problem. The best place to park is across the street in a parking garage, and they will validate the parking stub for you. They are less expensive than other theaters and I need to take advantage of the matinee pricing soon as well. The seats are comfortable and recline back and you can lift up the arm rest in between you and your loved one to snuggle closer. I just wish the screen was larger but it works. On a side note be careful of police in the area. Once later in the evening I did not pay attention on my way home from the theater to the no turn on red sign, while turning right facing bangkok bistro and got a ticket from some little power hungry small guy complex imp! read more

This is actually a pretty good Cinema. It isn't digital so sometimes the screens do that weird fading, or color changing that most people have gotten use to not having. Also the screens are pretty far away from some of the seats. Its a longer theater then usual. It is extremely clean, and the customer service has always been excellent. Concession stand food is regularly priced, but has a much better selection then most. Its about the same price tickets as other theaters, but theres no point in driving all the way to xgates or colonie if you are right here. They also have a bowtie club card like regal were you can earn points. read more

Bow Tie is my go-to theater choice for mainstream movies. Right on the corner of Broadway, it's set in a fun little area of Schenectady, right near a bunch of cafes and some neat little shops on Jay St, so I can get a meal, do some window shopping, and then catch a movie. The prices are amazing. Just $7 for matinée showings before 6 every day and $6 on bargain Tuesdays. The prices on the concessions aren't so exciting, but not any worse than Regal. Plus, they offer some different things like pizza, mozz sticks, nachos, etc. I tried the mozz sticks because they were cheaper than the popcorn! Pretty yummy. The lobby is nice with several tables to sit and chat with friends, and the movies always seem nice and crisp with lovely sound. They only play 6 movies at a time, but there always seems to be a good variety to choose from. Plus, the staff are lovely. They always seem so accommodating and friendly. I just wish I knew about this place sooner! read more

I really really want to love this place. It has a lot of things going for it. Great location, free parking in the garage on weekends, and its not chock full of annoying teenagers who have been raised in a barn (or maybe I got lucky). Tickets to Jurrasic World in 3D were at least 25% lower the other area cinemas and that was a big plus. Concessions were about average price for the area and you can purchase beer, wine, and margaritas. The rule says you can't bring them into the movie, but there is no one saying you can't. Sorry BowTie! The place however, was pretty understaffed and dirty. The concessions area was filthy with straw wrappers strewn about and popcorn kernels who got the chance to go rouge gave you an extra source of way-finding to the theaters. In the theater it was obvious they didn't clean out the seats from the last showing, and though we found two clean seats easily, it was weird. It was uncomfortable knowing that. If my schedule allows it, I will be back. It is cheap, rather uncrowded and the seats are comfortable enough. However, If I wasn't as honest of a person I would just walk in with my own food and no tickets, because clearly no one is looking. You need some more staff Bowtie! And a broom! read more

Downtown Schenectady has all the pub food and shows you could imagine. Bowtie movie theater fits right in. After seeing countless movies from openings to the movie of the year, the customer service has always been dead on. Management to the concession stand employees always make the lobby area comfortable and friendly for customers. Movie times vary when it comes too popularity of the film but seeing new releases at a non pack theater makes up for it. Tickets alone are about 4 dollars cheaper compared to competitors and cheap concession stand. Speaking of competitors such as regal, bowtie keeps the screening rooms clean, not worrying about stepping in trash like regal cinemas. Bowtie is definitely a theater to check out to avoid huge crowds and enjoy a movie with love ones and friends. read more

I was pleased that I finally managed to find a movie I wanted to see playing at the Bow Tie. I've lived in the area for two years, and I've been looking for a good excuse to visit this theater for a while. Since it's much smaller than your typical multiplex, only a few movies run at a time, and unfortunately, most of them are not my taste. The Bow Tie is so conveniently located in the heart of downtown Schenectady (at the corner of State and Broadway), and I was pleasantly surprised that the matinee prices were quite reasonable (only $6 on a Tuesday!). The lobby, restrooms, and theater were all very clean, and the theater seats were comfortable and roomy. The concession prices were criminal, though. It doesn't make sense to pay the same price for a small popcorn as you paid for your movie ticket! Boxed candies are $4? Just go across the street to the CVS, and you can probably get it for $1. Grab a can of soda while you're there because the soda at the Bow Tie is even more expensive than the candy. Still, if you steer clear of the concession area, the Bow Tie is a convenient and affordable entertainment destination in downtown Schenectady. read more

Downtown Schenectady is starting to come around and this place is a pretty good start. I do like the theater. Seating, sound, appearance, is all up to snuff. They don't have deadbeats hanging out looking for trouble which is a bonus. I agree with the last person stating the employees are nice and seem to enjoy being at work. They don't act like working at the place is a chore. They've always been friendly with me when I've gone there. I do like the option of snagging a beer before the show (on tap no less). The marquee out front is helpful in knowing the showtimes. Much appreciated. Go there, you will enjoy it. read more

This place is good for dates. I am on one right now. The concessions were a bit pricey. The layout is easy to follow. The employees treat you decent. The actual theaters are kept clean. This is the best place ever. The blackest place ever ever...when you turn the lights out. I love Bowtie, just bring down the prices. read more

They charge so much for popcorn, but they don't fill the bucket the way they're supposed to. They could also do a little more about their food presentation. Amazing experience. This is one of the cleanest theaters i have ever been to. It almost doesn't fit its location. It was very surprising to see a clean well maintained and reasonably priced establishment in that area. The staff was pleasant as well. I have been there multiple times and every time i have had a great experience. The only sad thing i would say is that there is never really anyone there. On one hand, i love that. I like feeling like i have my own private showing to new movies.. a giant screen and a comfortable seat. What's not to love. On the other hand, i want them have good business. This theatre never has anyone at the counter when you wanna get tickets. The manager is some teeny bopper that doesn't care about the theater. We walked in because nobody was at the ticket counter. We got kicked out because of their own negligence. We were going to pay but again nobody was at the counter offered to pay even after explaining but the 15 year old manager had a chip on his shoulder and insisted it was our fault that nobody was around to pay for the tickets.. The theaters are dirty not worth the horrible experience. Avoid if you don't wanna headache. read more

This is a great local movie theater. It's small, but has all the amenities--comfy seats, real buttered popcorn, lack of crowds, and they sell alcoholic beverages at the concession! The only downside is it only has room for 6 movies at a time, which means it's often blockbusters-only; but I try to patronize it as much as I can to support downtown Schenectady. read more
