Amtrak is my go to method of transportation when I want to unwind, relax, and leave the driving to someone else. I go to the Oakland /Coliseum train station, adjacent to the BART station. This station does not have a ticket station, or bathrooms. There's seating and trash containers. The area is not the cleanest and I have seen homeless individuals near the station. The train I boarded was crowded. Where was everyone going on a late Friday morning. Maybe spring break... The trains are always dirty so I take my Clorox wipes and Lysol to wipe and spray down my seats. There's a handful of seats on bottom train compartment and ample seating upstairs. There's racks for your bike and luggage. Restrooms provided throughout the train as well as, the cafe for snacks. Overall, a pleasant ride despite the loud noise coming from the kids laptop across from me. read more

Wow, took my daughter to this dump to watch a Korean Pop band, this place is trash, and I'll explain. Yes it's old, and the A's are not good. But the security staff.....talk about unprofessional and rude, spent 40.00 at the Shibe Park Tavern..1 beer and 1 cocktail, The Mavs & Thunder were playing on the TV's at the bar........just watching the game....and the security staff threatened us that we better leave now, not even allowed to finish our drinks or even finish a freakin peanut! The security staff was doing their job???? But rude, we are paying customers. At the end of the day, I blame the trash ownership and the A's - no wonder they are leaving, I wouldn't ever come back here to see a concert, even if Michael Jackson came back from the grave! Getting to the coliseum was sketchy, and the line to get into the Oakland Coliseum (Oakland A's stadium) was long and slow, but once we got in and found our seats, the service was great as was the game (Came to watch the Oakland Athletics play against the LA Angels. One star removed for the slow lines to get in and one for the overall location and upkeep (the coliseum) as it was a bit run down. Last year (2023) for the Athletics baseball team (MLB) to play here, before moving to Las Vegas like the Raiders (NFL) did a few years back. read more

This place is huge..I mean huge..I saw Pearl Jam at this epic of a venue..I was many rows up yet still felt on was front row ..The acoustics at this venue were so crisp so clear..This was by far one of the best shows I have been too..I have seen PearJam many times before,but this was one of my favorites..So many places to get a beverage and use the bathroom,that you don't miss much of a show with the turn around time..Great parking great seats great venue..and great band!! read more

Jack London Square is typically inaccessible by BART. However a little known secret is that Jack London Square is the next stop down from this station. So you can pay $8 for one way and enjoy a day on the town, go back for another $8 and then you had an enjoyable day. If you are a veteran or disabled or senior you get further reduced rates on Amtrak. Since the pandemic has pretty much settled down Jack London Square has a lot of exciting venues for locals and tourists alike to visit so it would be to your advantage to look online to see what you can do there. Yes $16 for a round trip from BART to JLS is a bit pricey but also on PAR with what it costs to go to SFO via BART. read more

The train takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to travel 70 miles from Sac to Oakland, but that's according to a published schedule which has nothing to do with reality. Interestingly enough the same trip in 1939 took just as long. Another words ZERO progress in the past 80 years. Took a ride on the Capitol Corridor yesterday (for the first time in several years) from Oakland Coliseum down to San Jose. Unfortunately, this was one of the seemingly occasional trains that encountered track work and delays en route, so it ultimately arrived in SJ an hour late. The train conductor was sympathetic to the fact, though a brief reversing on the track went unexplained. The train service is reasonably efficient, and it brings to mind a previous trip nearly ten years ago when I left something on the train and had to travel to Sacramento a day or two later to pick it up; thankfully the item was still there and I was able to bring it back home with me. I didn't remember that the cafe car offers beer and wine, which proved to be a helpful way to keep things lively in the stop-and-go trip yesterday. read more

I've been a frequent Capitol Corridor rider since my Davis days. Back then, there were delays probably 90 percent of the time when I rode the train from Emeryville to Davis. Not so much now, and that's why I give it 4 stars. I love the spacious seating and its cleanliness. They even have curtains now for those days when you want to just nap and not have the sun blind you! Not every mile is scenic (especially the portion between Martinez and Richmond where it can be dumpy), but the view of the bay can make your ride quite relaxing. I'm glad this train is available approximately every 1.5 hours during the day. I'm not a big fan of the price, but it's worth the sanity from driving when you can just sit back, read a book, take a nap or do whatever you so choose (even drink!) for a few hours. read more

I have set up four field trips taking students down to SJ from JLS to visit the tech museum and other locations in SJ. Setting up the field trips had been easy contacting Capital Corridor and getting discount tickets for my five students. This time was not so easy and extremely frustrating. I had been contacting the man who does the group travel since Feb 28th for a field trip on Mar 22. My students have learning differences and I wanted to make sure that we could have a space where our noise would not bother others and make it an easier day by planning ahead and having the tickets already purchased. As I finally got in contact with the person, he was very unhelpful and told me I need to send in a request 3 weeks in advance for discounted tickets. I have never been told this before and he kept suggesting I contacted Amtrak instead of Capital Corridor for tickets in mistake. This now makes for a stressful field trip, trying to get seats together, purchasing tickets at full price and having someone unwilling to help out a school group take a trip to further their learning about government. read more

You never would've thought we had a global mortgage market meltdown of epic proportions 10 years ago. Not according to all the non-stop real estate development that does not factor in consequences to aging infrastructure. As a result, traffic just about everywhere has gotten worse, especially in the Bay Area. What used to be a 1.5 hr. commute from Sacramento to the east bay has become a 2 to 2.5 hr. drive on a Saturday. Tired of sitting in traffic, I began taking Amtrak from Sacramento to Oakland and connecting to BART from there. Why didn't I do this sooner? I get to kick back and enjoy the ride without the stress of driving. There is decent WiFi, outlets in each seating area, comfortable seats, trays and spacious restrooms. I can take my bicycle on board for free! The train is never crowded, especially on the weekends. Bonus: you can get discounted tickets if you're going to the Oakland Coliseum station on a day when either the Raiders or the A's are playing a home game. Getting the discount, however, can be a bit tricky - I usually Google the Amtrak promotions for the A's or Raiders for the current year and enter the promo code when I buy my ticket online. Side note - The Coliseum station has limited outdoor seating and no attendant or restrooms. read more

I don't like this station very much. Oakland is weirdly built in general but that's still no excuse to have this in a really weird off road spot. Yes, it's like right next to the oracle arena but I had to literally turn a strange littered and abandoned corner/alley to actually see where I was going. Just one little LOW hanging sign that read "capitol corridor" I should've had a knapsack and some wheat coming out of my mouth like a drifter cuz I felt like I was in the middle of nowhere. It seems that most of my recent reviews are about how I feel instead of what I do. Strange. I figure that I should write a review about something that I do, right?! One of the things that I do often is travel by rail. I take the Coast Starlight to see my parents in San Luis Obispo, the San Joaquins to remind me why I live in the Bay Area, and the Capitol Corridor when I have the opportunity to work with my father in Sacramento or the inclination to fail miserably at igniting a romantic tryst in Davis (which has happened more than I'd care to admit). The Capitol Corridor is a decent train, for sure. Its fast, efficient, and takes me where I need to go with a minimum of effort. Trains run every hour (which is a little on the low side to make it a truly effective transportation option), and the ride comfort isn't up to the rest of Amtrak's routes (Caltrans really fucked up the rolling stock on the Capitol Corridor...but thats a different story for a different time), unless they're using surplus Superliner equipment. The train gets packed during commute hours, which is understandable, considering its the second most used line in the United States. Unfortunately, the cost can be prohibitively high (and it rises every year), but its a price I'm willing to pay for be able to drink a cold beer from the cafe car (or smuggled aboard in my backpack *shh...don't tell anyone*) and get some work done on their free wi-fi. The nice views of the Carquinez Strait, the Ghost Fleet and Mount Diablo don't hurt either. 3.5 Stars rounded up BECAUSE TRAINS ARE COOL, GUYZ (I'm a six year old boy at heart): A decent train which could certainly be better executed. Tip: If one is going to Sacramento from San Francisco, it is possible to take a San Joaquins to Martinez and transfer to the Capitol Corridor. This tip will save you (drumroll please!)...two dollars. DO: Get a transit pass from the conductor. Keep in mind: Trains can be delayed because of freight interference, passenger boarding issues, or "accidents of person" (as the French like to say). There is literally nothing you can do about that, stop complaining on Yelp. Note: Make sure you catch sight of the ghost town near Santa Clara. Its on the right side heading south. Note: This is the only train that stops at the miserable underpass known as the Berkeley Train Station. Relish that fact. read more

What would be even nicer about this route is if there was 0330 or 0400 train. Really, sometimes you just need to be there earlier and it doesn't benefit me if I'm arriving at the same time as if I had driven. Conversely, sometimes you just need to leave a little bit later but can't because the last train leaves earlier than you need. If there was a 2200 or 2300 train, I think I would almost abandon my car. Besides the normal route times, It definitely beats driving some days. Especially on Fridays from SFBay Area back to Sacramento where the progressive loss of lanes from Fairfield to Dixon squeezes traffic down to a painful stop and go. I've seen molasses move faster on a cold day!!! I'm not even going to comment on trying to get through Davis (UGH!) to Sacramento. Either way, it's a lifesaver on some days, I just wish there were earlier/later trains in both directions. read more

The bad: Sometimes public transportation gets delayed. It happens, and it sucks, but it's not unique to Capitol Corridor, so I can hardly blame them, but it is irksome. It's also a problem that it costs considerably more to take the train than to drive. I commute from the bay to Davis, and $22 each way is pretty steep (a ten ride cuts that in half, roughly, and if I were going every day, a monthly pass would cut it more, but spending $350 on my commute each month still seems expensive). The good: You can always find a seat, and often a table to get work done at. Staff has always been helpful and friendly. And--this is the point that probably outweighs the rest of them--dining cart means you can have a beer on your way home from work. Try to do that stuck in traffic on 80 watching the HOV lane inch by. I took the Capitol Corridor from Sacramento to Fremont. It was very easy and convenient. The train was clean and in good shape and even provided electrical outlets and free WiFi. The views range from gorgeous to a little creepy, but overall it was very cool to see the Bay Area by train. I wish I could have made it up to the dining car to get a drink, but I was traveling with luggage and they don't allow luggage in the area. About an hour and a half into the ride it was time for a bathroom break, but again I didn't really want to haul my luggage down the stairs and back up with me just to use the restroom. There didn't seem to be lockers or anything where you could secure luggage and I didn't want to leave my bag unattended, but I asked a nice lady sitting next to me to watch my bag for me and she happily obliged. The whole time I was in the bathroom I was imagining someone swooping in and stealing my bag (I promise I am not a paranoid person). Thankfully, it was still there when I returned :) I also learned that you can use your ticket on any day. I had a momentary panic attack when I realized I had pre-purchased my ticket for the wrong day. They reassured me that tickets were redeemable at any time. read more

I frequently use the Capital Corridor train to commute from Oakland Coliseum to Santa Clara (Great America). The good.... This is one of the best kept commuting secrets in the Bay Area! Very few people are aware that Amtrak provides this train down the East Bay! The ride is quick, easy, and comfortable. There are only 3 stops between Oakland and Santa Clara. The train is consistent at 45-50 minutes enroute (yes, there are occasional delays - but far fewer than driving). There is usually plenty of seating. The cars have both electrical outlets and WiFi, so you can charge your gadgets, surf the web, work, enjoy the view.... or sleep. There is the cafe car with beverages and snacks. (I have not indulged on any of the food items, but can say the beverages can make the ride home MUCH better) The cars are clean, comfortable, and safe. There is an Amtrak app that allows you to purchase tickets, check schedules, and monitor train status. Very handy... The bad.... Train times are limited. The trains run (roughly) hourly in each direction, but only during commute times. It would be great to have a few more timetable options in each direction. The cost is a bit high. I usually get a 10-trip ticket (10 rides in a 30 day window). That translates to just under $10 per trip. That's likely just a tad more expensive than if I drove (gas, wear and tear) (For me... my commute is 50 miles. My car averages 25MPG, so takes me 2 gallons of gas each way @ $3.50/gallon - that's $7 each direction). Having said that.... a) the ride is more consistent (time-wise) than driving; and b) its definitely less stressful. As such, any extra $$'s out of pocket are well worth it. And, I usually wind up adding an Uber ride between the Great America Station and work ($6 - $18 depending upon surge pricing). There are free shuttle buses at the Great America Parkway station, and the VTA is just upstairs - just not convienient for me. read more

I love love love Capital Corridor! I commute to Emeryville from South Bay, so I'm a frequent rider. There's always plenty of room on the train, so you don't have to worry about finding a seat. The interior and seats are clean, and the conductors are very courteous. It's so nice to sit back, relax, and not deal with the stress of driving in bay area traffic. Plus, there's free wi-fi and electrical outlets, so if you want to work or browse the internet, you can. I only wish there were more trains running! With only two trains that leave San Jose in the morning, I have to wake up super early to catch the first train. That's the only reason why I don't take the train half the time -- I'd rather get an extra 1.5 hours of sleep :P. read more

Beautiful scenic ride through the Suisun Marsh, Carquinez Strait, Richmond Bay, San Francisco Bay. $24 one way with no discount. Buy multiple trip tickets and get cheaper rides. Capitol Corridor may be good for those who commute frequently between Sacramento and the East Bay. But for occasional users, 3-6 times per year, the price is ridiculous. We live in Sacramento. Occasionally we like to take the ferry from Jack London Square to San Francisco for a day in the city or a game at the Phone. I can drive to Jack London Square, park, and drive back to Sacramento for under $20, and not worry about missing a train. Two round-trip tickets for the Capitol Corridor train at regular price from Sacramento to Jack London Square costs $116. That's six times what it costs to drive. That's absurd. read more

The train is comfortable. However the train is rarely punctual. It is terrible if you have to catch a transfer somewhere.

For Sac-SF commuters, Capitol Corridor is an efficient mode of transport to the Bay Area. Why drive, when you can sleep, work, read, or enjoy a drink from the bar with friends, with serene views of the Bay? Gary is my favorite conductor. And if you're a regular, you'll be inducted into the social club for monthly wine tastings, Bloody Mary Thursdays, and other festive evenings that make the two hour ride blow by! (Only downside is all the fatalities.) read more

I am currently commuting on a Monthly ticket between Martinez and Sacramento. For the price of a monthly ticket this service is a great value. I have had no problem finding free station parking for the 06:17 departure from Martinez. There's always been plenty of seats. WIFI is good and there is power at all seats. We usually arrive @SAC near to on-schedule. It beats driving by a mile. One thing they ought to get straight is the PA announcements when arriving at the intermediate stops. The PA doesn't always work in all the cars and in any event the messages are too often delivered in a sort of disinterested mumble. The interior electronic signboards for some reason do not announce the stops and you cannot really see out to the station signage in the dark, even if you are at a window. They perhaps ought to go with a European-style system of recorded messages. The snack bar is decent for the money, unless it's downstairs in one of those "Superliners". I made one trip down narrow stairs and the experience can only be described as a shocker. read more

I commute from Oakland to San Jose and this train service is great. Clean, fast, convenient and the onboard Wi-Fi works over 90% of the time. The only downside is if a pedestrian tries to play chicken with the train, the train always wins but then the crew have to deal with the mess and the passengers are delayed 2-3 hours. Aside from that, this is a great way to commute. The 10 ticket ride brings the cost of commuting to the same as if I drive, actually, if I drive and buy a coffee on the way to work, the drive costs me more than the train. read more

I'm a fan of train travel and have used a Eurail pass to tool around Europe, so when I got the opportunity to take the train I jumped to it. I caught the Capitol Corridor from Sacramento to Richmond. The seats were large and comfortable (you could recline by quite a bit) and the snack car was a nice plus. Sipping a glass of wine while the Solano Marshes whisk past is much more preferable than sitting in traffic on Interstate 80. read more

The good: you can ditch the crazy commute and relax in the big cars as it zips down the bay. The bad: about once a month you are likely to relax for a few hours extra while you watch the world getting on with life. I hate being stuck in a train. Even more so when no one is really interested in helping. In addition to my stuck in the train at 8pm rant: It is also expensive, not really a transit solution for the masses. 20$ roundtrip (at the discount price of a 10 trip pass) without a real shuttle service to bring you close to work. I am glad there is food in the car but the sandwiches are really gross (and again, expensive). There is no good solution for the large number of bikes. Bikes end up littered in the alleys of the cars. They brought a cargo car which they decided was too much pain to operate (it needs to be manually opened by the staff at every stop) and so runs empty. Given that there is no way for the riders to get anywhere when stepping out the station without a work paid shuttle, a bike or calling uber/lyft, removing the lower level seats on some cars to add bike space and reconditioning the rest to handicapped/elderly-only seems like a solution they should explore. Great America station is desperately bare. No protection from the cold/wind, few places to sit, absolutely nowhere to go if the train is delayed for an hour. The electronic display is littered with useless information (like "see tracks think trains") and advertisement and rarely shows the schedule of the train. read more

5 stars for the CC without reserve! fantastic on time schedule. i ride it practically every weekend and for 2010 have racked up a little over than 50 rides and the only delay was due to track repair over in richmond. thats no biggey because they gave us riders all a $3 off coupon for food on board. btw, food is ok in price. microwaved stuff for the hot things. i ride the CC from the ferry building in san francisco most of the time. of all the times ive ridden, the thruway bus connecting the ferry building with my train connection in emeryville was late once due to horrible rush hour traffic but for the most part it gets me to emeryville with 10-15min to spare. one time i even loved CC so much that i took it from sf to san jose...the ticket people thought i was crazy to pay $20ish to ride to san jose from emeryville when i could have ridden caltrain for $7. but im a train nut. routes like from fairfield to davis are worth it because driving takes something like 40min while the train gets you there in 20. i particularly like it when the train speeds past all the cars on the freeway. CC travels at 79mph. youll get a ticket for doing that on the freeway. i did. ive ridden my bike to ride the CC as and they have bike storage on board. you DONT need to put it in a box like on longer routes. bring a lock if you want it secure. i always look for the superliner cars on the consist to sit in as they offer the most leg room, comfort, and quietness. they are usually the least crowded cars too. there are two superlinercars i know of in the CC paint scheme: pleasant grove and pacific grove. sometimes youll see the phase IVb schemed bare metal superliners in the lineup too. youll recognize these cars for their single doors. these doors dont open at stations. train is very clean all the time! the scenery is super scenic! most individuals take up two seats. rarely if ever do i have to sit next to someone. only during peak times like during christmas or something do i have to do so...maybe rush hour too. i did have this one time where i sat next to someone who had their radio blasting and talking up a storm on their cell phone. i wish the conductor would have been more stringent with this dude (he might have but i got off at my stop before that happened, if it did happen). expect stuff like this on public transport dont forget to keep your ticket stubs and get points at amtrakguestrewards for riding that you can redeem for free travel later. riding the train from san francisco to davis is now about $12 roundtrip for me now...lets see prius drivers match that (dont forget toll)...heck and i didnt even mention i get loads of work done in between destinations on my laptop (outlets available at each seat! cant wait for them to roll out wifi) read more

Capitol Corridor is a fantastic example of conventional-speed intercity rail and how it can work for California. The ride is scenic and smooth, allowing the passengers to relax and think about other things besides the numbskulls driving impatiently on I-80. The website says that there is wi-fi on board, but I have not used it yet. On a journey between Richmond and Sacramento, the speed averages about 47 mph, which isn't bad considering the ever-present congestion and risk of a collision snarl on I-80 during most of the day. I have heard that freight congestion can delay the trains, but I have only experienced that about 1 in 6 trips. It should also be noted that there are station connections with BART at Coliseum/Airport and Richmond, the latter especially making access very easy for more people than otherwise. Service would be even better if the investment were made for high speed rail express tracks between Sacramento and Richmond, which may happen within the next 50 years. I highly recommend you consider using Capitol Corridor at some point when traveling between its destinations, especially during the headache peak commute times. read more

I started riding Capitol Corridor in September of `09 to beat the 880 traffic. I ride from Berkeley to San Jose, taking my bike on-board. It's fantastic. I can get a muffin and fruit bowl + coffee in the morning, and a beer on my way home. The only problem are the occasionally super-late trains. read more

In looking for new ways to commute from the east bay to mountain view, today I tried the capitol corridor. I boarded at the Oakland coliseum where there is a bart connection, and I rode to santa clara university. I was very impressed with how efficient this trip was; between oakland and santa clara there are really only like 2 or 3 stops, so the trip was only about 50 minutes (comparable to driving with no traffic). This was a pleasant experience, train was not crowded, and the seats were spacious and comfortable. My only complaint is the cost was a little steep: $17 is over 2X the price of caltrain from SF to santa clara. read more

trains are awesome! i don't know what you have in your glove compartment, but i bet it's not a whole cafe car! i don't know why anyone would drive when they can take the capitol corridor. the trains are generally on time (the only time i've ever missed it is when i was late), the conductors are super nice, and they have super delicious cheap treats in the cafe car. the very best is when there is a superliner in the morning, a dark luxury car where the seats are basically like recliners. you can sleep, you can work, you can look at pretty scenery. and if you get a pass, it's not that expensive. read more

Re: In reviewing the new bus thruway schedules that will begin taking place 5/1 I have discovered that there are other bus service route changes in the am. The 4:30am train from Sac will not have bus service to the Hyatt. The bus will only stop at the transbay terminal. The later train bus service will. It would be helpful if Amtrak would identify the changes do we can all be prepared next week. read more

Frequent, on-time service makes the Capitol Corridor a top choice for travel between the Bay Area and Sacramento. There are electrical outlets for riders who need to work, and tables for riders who want to have conversation. Food and beverage service is available in the cafe car. They are taking steps to go green, such as using dryers instead of towels in the restrooms. I am under the impression that the on-board employees have been given customer service training, as they were pleasant and helpful. One suggestion is to make sure that you board the correct train, if there is more than one train leaving the station at around the same time. The train cars do not have destination signs on them, but the conductors will make announcements as you board. Overall, it's a very good rider experience. read more
