I have been supporting Capitol Hill Books for about 4.5 years now. I am a book collector and grew very fond of the selection here! I paid a visit about two weeks ago and a gentleman was at the front register. I set down my books, and went into my bag to grab my discount card. When I set down the discount card he audibly scoffed, and said "are you serious?" I asked what he meant, and he looked down at the card. He continued to say "do you realize that you need to tell me you have a discount card before I ring up your total in our system?" He went on to explain that it is a huge pain for him to clear the transaction and restart with the discount first. He finished by saying " do you realize what you have done? Next time you need be better about this, and tell us you have a discount card before we ring up the books." I greatly regret following through with this transaction, and wish I would have left before providing payment. I was so shocked over how he spoke to me that I didn't know what to say or do, so I completed the transaction. I realized afterwards how inappropriate and condescending this conversation was between the employee and I. If Capitol Hill Books needs to know whether the customer has a discount card prior ringing up the transaction, it is their job to ask the customer before punching numbers. Not the other way around. And no matter the situation, no one should scold a customer the way I was over not having the discount card ready right away. It was in my wallet, and my arms were full of books. I have had a few questionable experiences as a customer at Capitol Hill Books, and this was the last straw. I will never be returning. If you are in the area looking for a pleasant experience, I suggest Kilgore Books on 13th, or stopping by Broadway Book Mall! Both owners started greeting me by name after only a few visits, and continuously go out of their way to make customers feel warm and welcome. ^ Both of these stores are also taking covid precautions, like mandatory hand sanitizer and face masks; whereas, Capitol Hill Books was far more lax (when I stopped by two weeks ago, the female employee only put on her mask when I approached the counter), and they did not appear to be taking any serious precautions other than the glass divider at the counter. read more

I was truly taken aback as I pride myself on being kind to others and being patient. What a neat little bookstore. I've never seen a used bookstore that was this large and well-organized. This is probably a place I wouldn't come in looking for something specific, but I think that's the charm of it. Though, I did notice you can search on their website for specific titles, which is pretty darn cool! All the personal touches really add something a little extra to this store. They have handwritten signs above every section, little notes attached to books and a staff picks selection right in the front. I do, however, wish they had at least a few more sturdy chairs to sit in. In my mind, this is totally a "come and browse and stay a while" type place. They had a few seats, but they were not good chairs at all to sit in, as they seemed more decorative than functional. Capitol Hill Books is a fun little place and it's clear the business owner cares about what they do. I think its definitely worth a browse if you're a bookworm that happens to be in the area! Dig into their collection, there's no telling what you mind find in the stacks upon stacks. read more

The employee was super rude. Yelled at us about taking a pic of a pic in a book . Then grabbed my homies arm aggressively. Totally unprofessional!! We were yelled at to leave . CHB is a medium-sized used bookstore, but it's stuffed to the gills and it's actually got a literary feel unlike the used bookstores on Broadway that just feel like flea markets. This reminds me of the many bookstores in Boston where the intellectuals pore for whatever has caught their interest this month. And they have a sense of humor. In the Film/TV section, there's an old-school tiny TV that's just too awesome for words. And in the Travel section, they've got a hard case, mini suitcase ready to be stuffed with maps and a few zagat guides for your next adventures. The staff is courteous but they leave you alone. I was in a boutique today and the shop owner stopped me at the door and told me that there was an upstairs that I hadn't seen. I looked at her and thanked her but I wasn't interested in what she was selling. I seriously thought, for a minute, that she might go psycho on me. But I digress. Check it out when you're feeling meditative and ready for a good browse. read more

This place is super cute and has a wide selection of used books. It's location easily bumps it up a star, as it is so conveniently located in the cap hill neighborhood. I enjoy walking over and browsing. They have all sorts of little knock knack things as well. Cute magnets and bookmarks, so you can come up with a decent gift for something here. My only complaint would be it is a little but pricey for the used books. I got a popular book published in the 90s. And it was 8 dollars. I could have purchased it for the same price brand new on amazon... BUT we have to support out local small businesses. read more

I love this little bookstore! You never know what you'll find. Most of the books are reasonably priced and decent condition. I've stopped by on at least 2-3 occasions and it's always been a fun hunt. Biggest downsides are the kids & business/leadership section. These books are fairly outdated with limited newer titles. I stopped by to pick some kids books to restock a little library....Most of the kids boos were from when I was little& looked like it too. We definitely need more places like this around (but with a larger kids section)! read more

Traveling in from out of town and I made the same mistake as always: I finished my book on the flight to Denver. Without a book for the rest of my trip and flight back home, I began to seek out book stores. Capitol Hill Books became the solution to my problem. I found the bookshop with relative ease and was greeted upon arrival by a man carrying as many books as his arms could hold. I knew immediately I had come to the right place. The shelves were identified by genre, and accessible. Books of all kinds, and variety of ages sat neatly in rows and rows. Among the stocked shelves, were bins of postcards. Postcards featuring art and local Denver attractions. The woman behind the counter was kind and patient and engaged in conversation about books and stories and the snare of technology - Ha! All in all, my favorite things, books, postcards, and intellectual conversations, were all found in one very cool place. A must-see in Denver, and a stop on my next trip. Also - for that woman behind the corner - I loved "The Dog Stars." It was fantastic. Thank you. read more

Stumbling upon Capitol Hill Books was one of the highlights of my afternoon. For a former bookcollectaholic, it was a little like almost relapsing. I resisted the temptation to handle even one book. This is such a charming bookstore full of charming people. It's like a little haven of quiet coziness in the middle of Colfax's bustle. As everyone has said there is a great selection of books to peruse and purchase here. And the prices are generally great. The selection here is a bit broader than other used book stores because the shop is a good size. And it's cleaner and more organized that many used book stores, too. The woman working had most of her books organized in a computer catalog so if you don't have time for browsing you can just ask if they happen to have what you're looking for. However, I recommend going when there is time to browse. This wonderful place definitely deserves your attention. read more

It's so much more than a simple used bookstore. It's cozy, has a diverse selection, and I wish I could have spent more time here. My favorite part of the store is the vintage pictures and postcards hung up all over the store. I wanted to peel them off the wall and take them for myself, but they're not for sale. Damn. The staff is unobtrusive, but they are there to help if you need it. Every employee working there was knowledgeable about what they had in stock, and they didn't have attitude. No one even looked up as I came in/ walked out empty-handed. It was like I wasn't even there, and that's the way I like it. The prices are reasonable, considering that you're paying for higher quality books. I can buy my favorite thing here... postcards! Yep, that's what did it for me. Any place that has original postcards with vintage icons, whimsical sayings, and praiseworthy portraits is a place that will have my repeat business. Be sure to visit the website before stopping in. Additionally, teachers get 10% discount on books for the classroom (sorry teachers, I don't think the discount applies to your romance novels), and us regular folk can get 10% for a year once you accumulate $100. Reviewing a used bookstore, especially in Denver, is like reviewing the hypothetical opening of my mother's bakery: It's gonna be good. If you read books as compulsively as i do, then book shopping can take hours. And the worst part is, sometimes the choices can be so overwhelming that the experience yields nothing. But this isn't true of used bookstores. I can afford more than one or two titles, and the choices don't seem as dire as they can in new bookstores with two books costing $30. Sure, occasionally there's some high prices here, but that's rare; like, in two senses of the word: in occurance and edition. So, really, it's kinda win-win. There's times when i go in here and walk away with only one book, and hope/pray/wish that another book finds me before i reach the end of that one. Then, there's times when i walk in and find myself a huge blip on the book-buyer-reader-radar, 'cause i'll leave having spent $40+. [under his breath and with face buried in hand]: But the price of reading and enjoying a new used book (x6/7): Priceless. read more

You know that super cool bookstore that every cool indie movie features in at least 10 separate scenes? Or maybe the bookstore where the protagonist of a sitcom develops a big time crush on the lady/gent who works at their local bookseller? Capitol Hill Books is THAT bookstore in Denver. Eff e-readers, Cap Hill Books has paper and lots of it. I stopped in here for the first time (shameful, I know, since I only live 3 blocks away) to get some children's books for a baby shower and I was really impressed by the prices. All three books that I got were new and they were a great price. Especially knowing that the baby will likely teeth on the cardboard, rather than actually spend time reading the pages. I currently have a backlog of books on string theory and swarm intelligence (you know, light reading) to keep my own brain occupied, but once my own bookshelf is full of books I've read, I'll definitely have to come back to pick up some new, cheap reads. read more

It is what it is. Profound, I know. Capitol Hill Books is a good used bookstore. Yes, yes I know it's cozy and cute, and the staff is friendly and kind. But all of that does not warrant an elevation from good used bookstore to great used bookstore. I want books, and Capitol Hill has those. But I also want some of those classic novels we were supposed to read in high school. You know the ones written by incredibly gifted, albeit somewhat crazy and sometimes alcoholic, authors named Fitzgerald, Hemmingway, Steinbeck, and Dostoyevsky? Because it is so popular and thus so picked over, Capitol Hill doesn't have many of those types of novels. The store is vast, and the variety of literary choices grand. It's located in part of town prone to a lot of foot traffic and minutes away from a couple parks and open air haunts to read your newly purchased pre-owned (loved) loot. The combination of those factors obviously creates a place book lovers flock to. Hence the difficulty finding what you may be looking for. Admittedly, I'm a classic literature freak so that's what I tend to search for when I head to the bookstore. Therefore, I can't speak to the selection of the numerous other genres housed in the store. So if you're looking for those ever so popular titles from yesteryear's high school English class, you may have to look elsewhere. If not, this could be the shop for you. As many times as I have passed this place, I have never gone in. Sometime back in May when I took a day off from work and played tourist, I stopped in to visit with fellow Yelper Julio T. I perused the book store that carried used books. I don't recall if they also carry newer books or not. I can always find books at a bookstore, just like leading a camel to water, in a bookstore, I thrive. I managed to find 3 used mysteries and got to spend some time doing my favorite thing, stopping to sit down and read for a bit, before I paid up and shoved off to grab lunch. The book store was arranged by different sections of interest, so you're sure to find something of interest. I promise it won't take me another 17 years to go back. :-) read more

Very cozy, great selection of eclectic and diverse books. The lady who owns the store is very sweet and helpful. Sometimes I fear for her life given she IS on Colfax. They'll even call you back once they get a book you requested. :) I like to stop by on my way back from work or errands and spend a little time unwinding and getting lost in the stacks of titles. Capitol Hill probably wouldn't be Capitol Hill without this place. Its charm rivals that of some of the larger bookstores farther down the road. Three stars for its helpful staff and veritably large selection. However, it is still beyond me why stores charge, and people would pay, top dollar for books when you have a library, half dot com, and book swaps. It's not that I don't value local business--I go out of my way to frequent these types of places--but $1 off for a "used book" just doesn't seem reasonable. I'm also disappointed there aren't more nooks and crannies in which to nestle and get lost in a book. read more

Every so often I go on a tear trying to fill in some spots in a collection I've been doing for about 10 years or so. So I make a run of all the used bookstores I know of or haven't been to yet. Capitol Hill was a decent size and relatively warm on a cold day. They had huge sections of fiction and non-fiction that were pretty well sorted out. Their children's section had almost nothing in it and was only comprised of a few shelves. The selection they had seemed mostly newer books and newish used books. Nothing older than a few years. So if you're wanting that used Stephen King, Dean Koontz, or Twilight book this might be for you. read more

I love used books. It means someone loved it enough to share it with the rest of the world. I love the creases in the spines, I lvoe the dog eared pages. I lvoe the out of print books that people have forgotten, but someone likes me stumble along to read and remember and find joy in an old book again (it was Lavondyss by Robert Holdstock). Capitol Hill books has a great variety of used books from all kinds of topics at your disposal. For some reason I am not in the neighborhood that much so I don't frequent the place as much as I could. The store is set up pretty cool with staff picks on what they recommend for reading and so on.
