My grandma, who lives with my family, had a cat who was around four years old. Her name was Clarity and she was a tiny little girl, only seven pounds when she died, but she had teeth problem and had to get a few extracted. The vet did not want to complete the surgery in one sitting, and scheduled the rest of the teeth to be removed about three months after the first surgery. About two weeks before the surgery, we took her in, and it turns out, her nerve was exposed and her teeth were reabsorbing. They sent us home with pain meds and a $700 vet bill after that appointment. She stopped eating a week before the second surgery and ended up with liver failure. She was too weak to leave her bed and she had to be put down. If they had done the full surgery, my cat would be alive right now. She was very skittish, being a rescue, and I was the first person to be able to get close to her and show her some love. She was finally getting used to us when she died. I wish I could put into words how amazing this vet has been. I struggle a lot with anxiety in my own life and dealing with my cat Morris. He has had a rough last few months due to heart disease. I took my 12 year old Jack Russell in because she was vomiting dark bile and not as active as normal. They were told she had a history of tooth decay. We got her back $200 later and they said there wasn't anything wrong with her. They gave subcutaneous fluids. One week later when I made it back to Houston herr vet she had serious tooth decay and five teeth needed to be removed. She was back to normal once the infected teeth were removed Capital Illini was great about getting me in quickly. It appeared there was quite the conveyor belt of pets being run through. My family and I have taken our pets to Capitol Illini for 50 years and have always been very impressed until March 17, 2022. A new vet, Dr. Ball and an assistant, Kaylee, took 10 minutes trying unsuccessfully to wrap my cat in a towel. I have no idea why except to contain her (the cat) for an exam. In the 10 minutes spend getting the cat riled up, the exam and the vaccine shots could have been administered by competent staff. Although Dr. Ball declined to examine the cat saying the pet was too upset, she did return and insisted on weighing the frantic cat a second time and refusing to tell me why. She told us we needed to give the cat tranquilizers both the morning of the follow up visit and the night before. My cat was NOT vicious or hyperventilating so I refuse to do this. We were also charged for an exam that did not take place. Follow up has resulted in an appointment with another vet, removal of the charge for the non-exam and assurance that this would be dealt with. I haven't gone to the follow up exam yet, but I have lost a lot of confidence in the practice for hiring a vet with such horrid animal handling and people skills. The worst vet I've ever taken my pet to. My dog was a little aggressive so the vet barely wanted to take my dog and she didn't even do my dog's exam or checkup she only gave her a shot and ran off. Then after I paid the vet told me that she could have given my dog a calm pill plus I paid $200 + just for the vet to give her one shot. Dr. McCall is everything you want your veterinarian to be. I needed to find a new vet, which was rushed when my dog had a seizure. My previous vet referred me to Capitol Illini, so my first visit to the clinic and with Dr. McCall was under scary, emergency conditions, and i left knowing my dog and I were in great hands, and that my family and pets would be returning here from now on. I've used them for my cats and dogs since moving to Springfield in 2008. Two of my pets have food intolerances and the cat in particular has had some unusual illnesses that were a challenge to address. I've always been able to get a sick animal seen in a timely fashion and the care they get is excellent. The staff explains everything and answers questions. Some time ago I came across a turtle in traffic on Veterans Road and managed to get him out of it. However, when I did so I found that his shell was cracked. I called my vet's office to see if they could help me out, but they didn't have a reptile person so they suggested this place. When I got there they told me that their reptile guy was busy and couldn't help me. (Having waited on my own vet during my last appointment while she saw to an animal that had been hit, I was annoyed that they couldn't just come look at the turtle and tell me if it could be helped or not.) They also wouldn't just take the turtle to see what could be done for it. My options were to make an appointment a few days into the future, meanwhile holding onto a possibly dying turtle... or (without even seeing if it could be helped first) they offered to put it to sleep. They also offered me several other options I had to put the turtle to sleep. The only saving grace was that they mentioned another vet place that had a reptile guy, though in their wording they said that, "Maybe I could get in to see him." As though animals only deserve your time and help when there's a fee being paid for it. As I said, I have a vet, but if I was ever in the market for another one... I would not come here. read more

Please do not use this Vet! We were told that our 6yr old dog had a torn knee ligament and it could be corrected with surgery ($2000). After the surgery we received a call telling us that our dog had cancer in the leg and would be dead within 6months. We asked why we were charged for a surgery to fix a torn ligament when it was cancer that had caused the problem and we were told that they didn't know it was cancer when they started the surgery, but had done a biopsy and found it then. So why the biopsy? Must of suspected something uh?, and didn't want to loose that $2000 for the so called ligament repair! The dog never used the leg again and only lived 2 more months. Who knows if they even did the ligament repair, since he never used the leg again. What a way for him to have to live out the little time he had left. But, hey at least this vet got their money!!! Because I come from a family of six veterinarians, I feel very strongly about the care that my pets receive and the interaction between the veterinarians and me. We have been taking our dog and cat to Capital Illini in Chatham and have always been treated with the upmost respect and wonderful care. I switched to them after the vet that we were going to decided to perform a biopsy on my dog while she was being boarded. The vet had my cell phone number. The biopsy was benign, although I was charged for the procedure. At Capital Illini, you are never forced into procedures. If a phone call is warranted, you receive one. The vet takes the time to discuss options and will make sure you understand. You are part of your animals healthcare. I have never been disappointed with the care my animals have received from them. The front office staff and technicians are wonderful as well. I highly recommend Capital Illini! read more

Dr Wright had performed several orthopedic procedures and he is an the best, and still consults with Dr Holbrook. They have the latest technology and their technicians are the greatest. Started coming toCap Illini in the 1970's with our first poodle. They were recommended to us because of Dr. Geiger as one of his specialties were poodles. We have been coming here ever since. I can't say enough about how great all of the doctors and staff have been to all of our little angels. They never rush a visit and make sure the little ones are made as comfortable as possible. Any question has been handle with the utmost importance. In May called about traveling and concerns about my little dog and she is a great car rider. The receptionist took my questions and said would check and call me back. In less than 15 minutes Dr. Helgen was calling me and answered all my questions and concerns. We have seen almost every Dr. at Cap Illini and they have all been wonderful. The staff have also been super. Saying good bye is hard but, the staff have been great to care and love our little ones. My 93 year old father has a nine year old dog that is his best friend and trusted companion, a black lab mix named Marty. Marty had a big fatty tumor on his chest and front right shoulder area, that was causing him to limp and generally have a lower quality of life. For an older dog, surgery is always risky, so we debated whether to do the procedure or not, and finally decided it was worth the risk. Everyone at Capitol Illini was wonderful and took great care of our special friend. He had the surgery which removed a 4.5 lb. tumor, stitched him up, and monitored him for several days along with the Animal Emergency Clinic of Springfield for the overnight care. The love, skill and dedication all these people showed was amazing. The stitches have been removed, and Marty is like a new dog, very spunky, great movement running around his yard, and making his best friend a very happy owner indeed. On Nov. 13th The Learning Nook Pre-School scheduled a appointment for our school's muched loved guinni pig "Stuart Little" who had developed a serious looking growth on his leg. Dr. Armour after 60 seconds said the large growth was either a infection or tumor. It would cost us an additional 300 to 400 dollars for her to cut into it or 60.00 to put him to sleep. I was also given a bill of 97.00 for an office call--- I was robbed by Capitol Illini Vet and they thought it was funny. I know now why their parking lot was completly empty of customers!!! They claim to be the "best" around Springfield by naming the U of I as one of their affiliations and because they have a bunch of equipment. From my experience I question the expertise for some of the equipment (I was charged a "consulting" fee which sounds to me like the doctor doesn't know how to interpret things and they send off for verification). This place operates like a business and their primary concern is to get your money. They do a good job of putting on a face of being friendly and truly caring, but the fees they charge and considerably overpriced, especially if you get an idea of the overhead. I also had one of the vets there only offer me the highest price dewormer. It was not until after the fact when I was discussing my worm ordeal with a friend that I learned that cheaper options were available. When I inquired with Capitol they did have the cheaper option but the vet made no mention of that to me! The bottom line is they want your money and they know how to walk the walk and talk the talk to get it. read more
