We had an emergency a week ago - our perfectly healthy 5 year boxer collapsed in our yard, not breathing at 5:15pm. We initially were going to take her to the er, but that was a 20 minute drive and we knew she wouldn't make it. We called this vet, only minutes from our house, in a panic. They met us at the door and rushed her straight back. Unfortunately, we lost her. The staff stayed late and gave us as much time as we needed with her. To preface, We started coming to this clinic over 15 years ago when we had a hard time getting our dog in to be seen by our regular vet during an emergency. This clinic was Sangamon Ave Vet Clinic at the time and they were able to work him in the next day in between appointments. A week ago, Tuesday we took our older dog that is 15 years old in for a wellness visit and received some new flea medication to give him. We gave him the medication and two days later he developed diarrhea and threw up everything he was eating. This continued from Thursday night until Monday morning , when I called to try to get him in to be examined. I told them of my concerns with his age and the fact that he can't hold anything down since Thursday night. That didn't matter, they said they couldn't get him in until the next week, I expressed my displeasure with this, especially since he was 15 and I felt like he was going down fast. I called another vet to get him in and they couldn't squeeze him in but did offer me a suggestion as to an urgent care clinic on the south end of town which I was not aware of. I did get him in there and they took very good care of him, we found he was going into renal failure and likely would not get better. Why Coble couldn't offer an alternative suggestion let alone try to squeeze us in since we've been taking two dogs there for over 15 years is beyond me. Sad to say, but we will be looking for another vet hopefully a little more caring than what this office has become. My displeasure is not with any of the doctors in the office, but rather the front office. Seems they have no compassion for your needs. read more

Extremely disappointed in the behavior of the representative that took my call. I was calling to set up a neuter for my dog and when I asked what vaccines are required besides his rabies before surgery she literally laughed at me on the phone and then proceeded to tell me what vaccines are required before surgery. Super disheartening to have been treated that way as I always spoke highly of this establishment to other people locally. I guess when a dog parent wants education on what his dog is being injected with that's funny. I will not be utilizing them in the future. read more

This is not a caring vet office, it is a PREDATORY business. They do not care about your pet, they care to up-sell by any means necessary. Today, they refused to book me a nail trim, saying she is overdue for a check up and rabies vaccine. When I looked at my dog's tag, she has 3 months left! Reviewing my bank records, we have never had a visit less than $300, and I am a teacher. I asked for a manager's contact in which to send proof, and was met with acrimony and a dial tone. My husband was able to call the same day and get an urgent appt in with Dr. Saner-Reeder who sees exotic animals like chinchillas. He found the staff there amazingly kind. A week after, they sent a nice sympathy card. It even had a chinchilla stamp on it (we had brought our chinchilla in for care.) They are very sweet. read more

Sadly, we have recently left this clinic. This is particularly due to our recent experience with the staff concerning the passing of our beloved 17 year old golden lab we had been bringing there for nine years. The doctors have provided excellent care for our cats and dogs over the years, particularly Dr. Smith. We found this vet after leaving another one in town where the entire staff was rude to us and mean to our dog. We were very happy when we moved to SAVC with the treatment and care from the friendly doctors, veterinary assistants and the office and boarding staff, and our pets were happy there at their well visits and made comfortable there when they were ill. But over the past couple of years we noticed a change in the attitudes and behavior of some of the front office staff--officious and indifferent at best, uncaring, and even rude at times. Our dog had been seriously ill twice in six months and we thought we were going to lose her each time, but after treatment there, she rallied. The third time, though, we knew she was suffering and would need to be seen immediately as she was probably at her end. I called in desperation and was told by an abrupt and indifferent person that they had no availability and I would have to go elsewhere. She did not offer suggestions--I had to keep asking. She was officious and uncaring. Then, she put me on hold abruptly, and returned and said someone had been "whispering in her ear" and we could bring our dog in the next day. Unfortunately, our dear girl passed away at home that afternoon. I called back to cancel the appointment and find out about cremation services, and I got the same attitudes, this time from two different people who reminded me I should call and let them know when I was bringing her in ahead of time so they could have the paperwork ready. When I did that the next day, I told them I would need help carrying her into the clinic and was told they would "try to find someone" to do that if they weren't too busy. When I brought her in, there were three young women behind the counter, one of whom I believe had talked to me on the phone the night before. One person gave me the forms to sign, one ignored me completely though I was the only one there and was visibly distraught, and another kept staring at me with a smirk and didn't say anything. I mentioned help carrying her in again, and the woman told me she needed my payment first--as though I wasn't going to pay! I was a regular client! She and a vet tech came out with me to get her, and as I cried, they just stood there--the vet tech talked gently and soothingly to my dead dog and not to me. I had to go back in and blow my nose; when I did, one of the other women behind the counter stared at me without a smile while I was crying. It was unbelievable. NOT ONCE in four separate encounters, three on the phone and one in-person that took at least twenty minutes, did any SAVC staff member display an ounce of empathy towards me. NOT ONCE did anyone say "I am sorry for your loss." Six simple words could have made all the difference. They acted like they didn't care--it was just another day at work for them. When her ashes were ready for pick up, I got a businesslike and rushed call informing me; when I went into the office, the same three women were there, two ignored me, and one took a bag out of a cupboard that had my dog's remains in it, set it on the counter, and said, "there you go." She might as well have been handing me a bag of dog treats. We did get the standard sympathy card in the mail as is customary, but that doesn't excuse the behavior. I wrote a long letter explaining what had happened and sent two copies, one to each of the vets that have treated our pets over the years, Dr. Smith and Dr. Best. I have heard nothing in response. The people who meet the clients up front, both in-person and on the phone, need some training in how to respond to distraught clients in situations like mine, or maybe they should be in a different profession. It is sad that we came to SAVC because of this same behavior at the prior clinic, and now, nine years and thousands of dollars later, we are leaving for the same reason. read more

Unhappy. Have had an account for years here. My 15 yr old little girl had started to lose weight and then suddenly stopped eating or drinking. Had very shallow respirations and was very comfortable in our arms. Her passing was just as we hoped. To pass quietly and in peace in our arms. No suffering. After several days of watching every breath we concluded that perhaps it best that we look for assistance and euthanasia. Was given the run around and wouldn't even try to get us in to be seen within a reasonable time frame. Too busy. Then after giving me an appointment date/time stated 'never mind while we were talking someone else took that appointment.' read more

Been a client for 26 years for 5 different pets. My dog is sick and they told me that she needs to be seen but they can't see her and I should call other vets. Can you imagine your child's pediatrician telling you that your child needs to be seen but good luck we are too busy? Shouldn't clinics have emergency appointments for sick pets during clinic hours? Why have a vet if they won't see your pet for an emergency? My 26 years of loyalty to this business means nothing. read more

Covid measures are definitely observed with parking slots and humans not allowed in. You pull up and check in and they assign you a parking spot. As of yesterday my family and I have been taking all of my pets to Sangamon Avenue Veterinary Clinic for approximately 35 years. It is close to my home and since it is a north end business, I believe in supporting it. But, lately it seems different and this was the last straw. This would be the third time that this has happened to me. When your loyal customers call you and tell you that your pet (the one that they have trusted you with and spent hundreds or more on) may be dying, has not been eating and has lost weight in two days, you don't say the next appointment you have is 10 days from now. And, then of all of the ridiculous things, you refer me to another vet. I have never heard of any successful business doing this but I mess able to see another veterinarian in Sherman the very next day. After seeing what they charged and reviewing their facilities, procedures I decided that Sangamon was no longer the Vet for me! You cannot truly care about pets if you won't see them when they are really sick. You can't take 10 minutes to look at them. 10 minutes, Really? I guess what I am trying to say is your clinic provides very bad service to any animal who is ill. You are obviously raking it in on check ups and boarding but when a person really needs you, you are not there. This is the third time this year and the exact same experience. At least this time Nicole gave me a phone number and Vet to call, the last girl was just rude. I will be taking my pets elsewhere from now on because I need someone dependable. I would like to give you some advice to try to set aside some time during the days for emergency situations or walk ins, referring your clients to other vets is bad business and puts your clients out. We were a few minutes late because are other dog got out of fence as we were leaving for vets. Girls at front were a little rude. Then after waiting 20 minutes with no one there. They tried to charge me for another exam after i had just been there the previous week and they suggested coming back next week so dog wasn't so scared of the shots, etc. Didn't know they just want to charge me DOUBLE. They gave me a estimate last time, this time it was much MORE. We walked out. NEVER COMING BACK EVER!! APL gives shots for a fraction of what these crooks charge. read more

The best vet clinic in town. I had a very tough, difficult to handle 140# Akita who was dog aggressive and not crazy about strangers. Dr Joan Saner-Reeder made him fall in love in one visit. She was always on top of things, he was one health problem after another. Eleven years after our first visit, Dr Joan eased him out of this life with compassion and love as I held his big bear head in my lap. She has taken on my new population - three smooth collies and she feels like family. Do not hesitate to come to Coble. They are the best. I will say one thing though, their prices have become astronomical and when they changed office managers the payment flexibility on very large bills was stopped immediately. read more

I have one animal that has several serious health issues, and the Vets and staff are always there to help me and check up, even after hours, on me and my pet. They are sensitive and respectful for all your needs, from emotional to financial, concerning your pet and what is best for everyone. I trust them-that's the bottom line. Our bird dog fought a bob cat and won in the early hours of the morning. Unfortunately, even a winner in this battle is going to have injuries. They worked us in this morning, even though we were new customers. (Just moved to the area) I had her records faxed from our old vet, and they were able to treat her and update all shots to make sure she was safe. Super friendly, and reasonably priced for the care and kind service. GREAT staff, and super patient for our Monday morning emergency. We now have a new vet, and we couldn't be happier. read more

When trying to discuss my concerns about his management, I was told, amongst many other things that Dr. Coble would hang up the phone if I did not "shut up". My dog Lady was hit by a car when she was about two. I brought her to Coble, then Animal Emergency Clinic for the weekend so she would have round-the-clock care in the event she went into shock. Her hip was shattered on one side and the leg was dislocated on the other side. I took her x-rays to every single vet office in Springfield to see if anyone could fix her. I wanted the best possible outcome for my dog. Everyone said no, they couldn't help. I was referred to U of I by some, and others said she would never walk again. Dr. Coble was the only vet in Springfield who had faith that she could overcome this and offered an idea for a surgical solution, which would create what he called a 'phantom joint'. My dog Lady lived to be 12 years old and had many years of running around until she died, thanks to Dr. Coble and the staff at Coble Animal Hospital. When she died, they sent a card with so many lovely messages from the entire office. Signed by both doctors and staff. It brought me to tears when I first read it, and also each time I re-read it. I will never take any animal elsewhere for routine veterinary care. read more

I started coming here last year with my sugar gliders and I will be taking ALL my pets here for the foreseeable future. They were clean, prompt, polite, and affordable. Love our vet, she's amazing and truly, clearly loves animals. We brought our dog for boarding at the "Howliday Inn" in 7/2013 he was there for one week. When I picked our dog up I did not notice the ID collar around our dogs neck until I got him home due to how tightly it had been placed. The collar was placed so tight that it made abrasions and lesions were created. I quickly removed the collar to find it was caked in dried blood and matted fur. I immediately reported this to the boarding manager who in turn referred me to the office manager. She explained that the people that handled our dog were not animal technicians and were not trained to look for problems. Which is understandable, but what isn't is that our dog was also given a bath the day before pick up. The bath report sheet has a specific area which stated that all of his fur and skin were intact and no noticeable problems were noted. Another interesting fact is this collar was an obvious misfit, there was stress damage to the collar. To help you imagine, think of a big guy in a choker collar. This facility has over 20 staff members and NOT one person noticed it was too tight, for A WEEK! Long story short the manager left her customer service skills at home when she refused to understand how this was an issue. The second phone call to the office was more along the lines of "we feel our concerns are being minimized and ignored." The manger even tried to blame our dog and said the injury happened because he was drooling too much. He is not an excessive drool-er and never has been. At this point things moved into "listen lady we dropped our child off with you for a week he has some injury due to whatever the case may be and all we are looking for is some accountability here." Plain and simple. She finally asked the vet/owner to contact me. He looked at our dog and agreed that the collar was on too tight but said "well it isn't like he ran away or we gave him the wrong shots or anything." He then went on to tell me that the manager that I had been talking with has no real business experience and "she is the same as the manager of a subway." He did however, tell us that they learned a lesson from this and would be removing the collars from now on before dogs are picked up. Basically he was saying that they would be hiding any evidence of neglect and stated it was smart for to have kept the collar to show him. He finally said that refunding any of our money for the boarding would be a "bad business decision for him." That is the one thing he got right,not correcting the issue on any level resulted in this review. Do NOT use this place, the staff are not trained (by the managers own admission) and the manager can't manage (by the owners own admission). I do not think it is unreasonable to expect our dog to be in at least as good of shape as he was when we dropped him off. Clearly a case of the blind leading the blind. read more

When we first moved to Springfield, we chose this vet office for our dog because it was in close proximity to our house. We did not enjoy our experience with the first vet we were assigned to...not personable, could never remember our dog's name, did not seem thorough. But, when we requested to switch to a different vet in the same office, we had no problem doing so and have had nothing but good experiences since. Dr. Smith is wonderful. She takes the time to listen and is thoughtful in her assessment of the problem. She is not someone to unnecessarily do a battery of tests and run up your bill because she can. read more

This place is aweful. They only care about money not your pet. My dachshund was extremely sick and we needed to put her down but because it was 4 days before christmas we didnt have the money so they told us they couldnt help us. They were going to make my baby suffer because we didnt have the money. Luckily Banfield cares about pets and took us in immediatley and worked with us. They humanely euthanized her and sent us her paw print. read more
