Where the other teachers focused on teaching how to play individual pieces, Matthew teaches how to play the piano. With a rigorous focus on developing proper technique and an understanding of the music, I am learning the skills that will truly enable me to play to my potential. He is a masterful diagnostician, focusing in on the student's individual needs and providing targeted exercises to overcome each challenge and promote growth and progress. I have come to piano later in life, with little prior experience. I feared my inexperience and age would be a barrier, but nothing could be further than the truth. Matthew has made me feel as welcome and valued as his most proficient students. If this all was not enough, Matthew composes very beautiful music of his own, that as his students we get to listen to, as well as learn and play. It is a really special experience. Studio V is not just a place to come for piano lessons, though. It is a place to join an expansive and welcoming community of people that share a love of music. I cannot recommend Matthew and Studio V highly enough.

I was skeptical of the uniformly amazing reviews; but emailing Matthew about lessons has been one of the best decisions in my life. Truly. Growing up, I spent 20 years playing the violin and had teachers of all levels. Matthew is hands-down the most effective music teacher I've ever had. He tailors his approach to each student's musical journey and can diagnose very quickly (and very accurately) exactly what each student needs. I don't just mean areas for technical improvement (though he has genius tips to make that "click" too). Matthew also makes his students better musicians--equipping them with the theory they need to understand the music, and the tools they need to better express themselves through the music. After 2.5 years with Matthew, I am a much, much better musician than I ever was before; and my piano abilities have developed way faster than I would've expected. I can't recommend Matthew highly enough for anyone who is looking to become a better piano player (or composer!). One final note about what makes Matthew unique. He's an incredible human being and true friend to all of his students; he's not just a "piano teacher." And when you join Matthew's studio, you are welcomed into a vibrant and engaging family of musicians (of all levels and backgrounds). A gem in DC. Quit thinking about it. Studying with Matthew will change your life!

Since it had been sometime that I had last graduated, I was looking for some real guidance in helping me prepare for the exam. After my usual exhaustive search online, I came upon Griffon Prep and decided to give them a shot. I went to the first session with Jeff and was immediately sold on this place. Both Jeff and Bernie are awesome people and great teachers. I had a good learning experience with them. I did end up with a much better score than what I had anticipated and cannot thank Bernie enough for her coaching. I did get accepted to a couple of good schools on my list!! I would recommend Griffon to anyone who is looking for test prep - great location, good fees, and awesome instructors!

They legitimately care about the success of their students. Indeed, even after law school, I have stayed in touch with them. Their teaching methodology is wonderful, very hands on, and kept me thoroughly engaged. As an experiential learner, this worked really well for me. I also would like to highlight that I took multiple courses with Griffon Prep and each time, I loved the other teachers as well as the other students. I think it is a testament to Bernie and Jeff that they cultivate such a collaborative and positive learning environment. Also, for those who care only for results, my LSAT score went up double digits (I also took their GRÉ course and also improved significantly).

Based on observed practices, the program appears to struggle with age-appropriate behavior management for preschool-aged children. There is little evidence of proactive strategies such as redirection, positive reinforcement, or intentional social-emotional skill-building. Instead, responses to behavior feel reactive and punitive, which is concerning in a setting serving children ages 3-5. Families paying for care at a licensed childcare center should reasonably expect practices grounded in modern early childhood development--not outdated, punitive approaches. Communication with families is limited and often occurs only after issues have escalated, rather than through consistent, collaborative engagement. Opportunities for early intervention, shared problem-solving, and family partnership seem to be routinely missed. The program also appears to be chronically understaffed, with frequent staffing disruptions that affect supervision and continuity of care. These challenges raise serious concerns about operational stability. Taken together, these patterns point to deeper issues around training, oversight, and hiring standards--areas that warrant formal investigation, not just surface-level review.

Before she tutored me, I tried using Kaplan services. They were ok, but they did not have a personalized tutoring approach like Emma did. Emma's study tips, organization, and understanding of concepts is what separated her from the Kaplan tutors. Through my time with Kaplan, my verbal score only improved by 5 points, but with Emma, my score further improved by an additional 6 points! I was already confident in my quant skills, but even there Emma helped me increase my score by the few crucial points that separate top tier schools. Because of Emma's help, I feel confident about getting into my reach schools AND I have a whole new arsenal of study tips/habits to use not only for testing but for the rest of my academic career! My only regret is not choosing Emma first! Thank you!!!

While I was searching for a tutor many people I spoke with said my target score was unrealistic, which was discouraging. Emma was always extremely positive and encouraging. In particular, I struggled with the quant section of the GRE and Emma helped me immensely. I am confident that I gained a great amount of knowledge from working with Emma, even though it was not reflected in my final score. Emma is extremely organized and and did an excellent job catering our sessions to my specific needs. If I did not understand a concept, Emma would explain it in a different way until I was able to grasp it. She is very patient and kind. I also loved that Emma was realistic about studying vs personal life. I work a full-time job and was not able to study for 30+ hours a week as other test takers may have, and she was very understanding about this. Emma will meet you where are you at and will not pressure you as some other tutors do. She knows there is already enough pressure when applying to grad schools! Although I am disappointed with my score, I still feel confident that Emma is an quality tutor.
