Wrapping up a one month stay at Capo By The Sea and figured I'd leave a review in hopes to be helpful to others considering treatment here (or elsewhere). Some background... I've struggled with substance use disorder / alcoholism for much of my teen and adult life and have pursued sobriety over the past three years, primarily through AA back home in Boston. I relapsed in May after a 9-month run of sobriety... during the 7 months from May through December, things got worse, not better, and I felt like I couldn't figure out how to get back on track on my own. I've long resisted the suggestion to attend inpatient rehab, primarily out of fear from completely disconnecting from my professional life (I run a professional services firm and feel I need to be reachable for emergencies, etc.). Once I found out there were rehabs that allowed phone access (which I hadn't considered), I decided to get over myself and pull the trigger by the time I turned 40, which I did during my first full day at Capo. Life at Capo: Peers (the other clients): Feel like I hit the jackpot here. I've been surrounded by other sharp, successful individuals who struggle in similar ways. Lots of diverse life experiences, incredibly kind and interesting people, universally supportive and serious in their pursuit of recovery. -- 10/10 Staff (therapists, technicians, support staff): Another jackpot. The program is supported by a large staff, most of whom have been with Capo for a long stretch. They work cohesively, skillfully, and have our best interests at heart. I couldn't be more thankful for the environment they've created. I've never eaten better, and I feel like I'm walking away with tools and insights that will help me sustain my recovery post-Capo. There's a good mix of group therapy, individual therapy, and alternative modalities (breath work, yoga, massage, etc.). Like with the clients: diverse life experience, incredibly kind and interesting people, universally skillfully and supportive in what how they approach their work. -- 10/10 Other Stuff: I've enjoyed being exposed to what I would call "the greater Capo community." I've enjoyed the outside AA meetings in the evening, attending Capo Church on Sunday mornings (always followed by a group brunch at The Brig in Dana Point Harbor), and taking walks around our neighborhood and down to Capistrano Beach. I haven't attended church much as an adult (raised Catholic), but I've found the Capo Church (which is not directly associated with Capo By The Sea) to be a cool place with great music. Attendance is optional, but it's been a great overall Sunday morning routine for me. -- 10/10 Other Other Stuff: John, the founder of Capo By The Sea, seems like an incredibly compassionate guy. He's certainly built what I would consider to be a heck of an operation. We get to know him directly as he runs our 7:30am gratitude meeting each day, and he also treats folks to brunch on Sunday mornings after church (if you decide to go). I think the culture and staff of any business tend to be a reflection of leadership, and I couldn't be more impressed or thankful for what John has built. I consider it a real blessing that I found my way to Capo By The Sea. -- 10/10 The Weather: I thought it was supposed to be sunny in Southern California? We've actually had a few days of rain during my stay. It would be cooler if the weather were 70 and sunny every day, not just most days. Sure beats Boston winters tho! I am extremely concerned about the lack of supervision and accountability at this facility. During my experience, it appeared that residents were able to leave and return with little oversight, engage in inappropriate sexual relationships, and continue behaviors that are contrary to the purpose of recovery. The staff did not seem to adequately monitor residents or enforce rules designed to keep people safe and sober. A rehabilitation facility should provide structure, support, and accountability. Instead, I witnessed what appeared to be negligence and a failure to properly supervise residents. This environment did not feel safe or conducive to recovery, and it raised serious concerns about the well-being of those seeking treatment. If individuals are able to engage in substance use, sexual activity, or other high-risk behaviors without intervention, then the facility is failing to provide the level of care and oversight that families and residents expect. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this facility to anyone seeking a serious recovery program. read more

Capo by the Sea is the best rehab ever! I came here for alcohol addiction with my guy, and also for couples therapy... and we feel 1,000 times better. The group therapy is thorough, the therapists truly care about healing your mind and emotions, and the staff are all amazing! We go to an AA meeting in the mornings, hosted by my new golf partner, John. He always sets the day with a magical park meeting. You have the option to end the night with a local AA meeting also. Not to mention we have all access to our phones and computers to keep working and stay in touch with loved ones. I stayed at the "montecito house" and the accommodations are lovely and very comfortable. Capo saved my life and my relationship and I am truly forever grateful to this wonderful program & rehab. if you truly want recovery-DO NOT GO HERE I am not an angry client with hurt feelings. I am someone who was late and new to the disease of alcoholism, and I do not want anyone else to have to go through the trial-and-error process that I did. Despite what is advertised on their website, the amenities and support promised are not reflective of the actual program. The most serious issue is the lack of real education and no meaningful aftercare plan to support long-term recovery. They offer an in-house AA meeting every day, which I continued to attend after leaving, believing I was participating in Alcoholics Anonymous. However, there is no education about what recovery looks like in the real world. There is no emphasis on sponsorship, step work, or working a program--where the real work of recovery actually happens. Which if you have ever attended an AA meeting this is the main focus. His meeting focuses in him. I had a seemingly positive relationship with the owner, John, which gave me the illusion that I was still supported by the program after leaving. He presents himself as helping people off the streets, which can appear admirable. However, clients are quickly removed if they do something he disagrees with. Clients are frequently moved between rooms and houses, disrupting routine and creating instability. He gossips about staff and clients to other clients, openly plays favorites, and creates a dynamic where being "chosen" can make someone feel like they are doing well--something that is extremely unsafe during early sobriety. This behavior is unethical and dangerous for vulnerable individuals. The business model appears to rely heavily on repeat clients. This may explain the lack of aftercare planning. I personally attended this program four times, and each stay included a significant number of returning clients. Despite multiple admissions, I never once received a clear understanding of what alcoholism actually is. There were no classes on the cycle of addiction, no step education, and no foundational teaching on Step One or the disease model of alcoholism. I left with no guidance on how to function sober in society. After attending a treatment center that truly prioritizes education, structure, and aftercare, it became clear how much information was withheld here. That information is what gives people a real chance at surviving outside of treatment. If you are looking for a place where you can keep all your devices and attend repetitive process groups with rotating therapists--where the same issues are shared over and over without direction--this may be appealing. However, if you take this chronic, progressive, and potentially fatal disease seriously, I strongly encourage you to do your research and choose a center that prioritizes aftercare, individualized treatment, education, and long-term success. There were also serious concerns around professionalism. The owner regularly bragged about "high-profile" clients and mentioned names, which is deeply inappropriate. Pricing appeared inconsistent, and the detox protocol was excessively strong--clients often had little memory of their stay and were placed alongside non-detox clients. The level of medication prolonged healing and created its own withdrawal process. Attendance at groups was not enforced, and getting out of bed was optional. Therapists frequently spoke poorly about clients, staff, and even the owner himself. The environment was chaotic, unstable, and filled with gossip and dysfunction. This is the last kind of environment someone needs when trying to heal from addiction. Many other reviews mention money concerns and misleading amenities. While those issues are real, they are not the reason I am writing this. I am writing because alcoholism is a chronic, progressive, and potentially fatal disease. When treatment fails to provide proper education, structure, sponsorship, and aftercare, the consequences are not inconvenience or disappointment--they can be life or death. My concern is not about comfort, luxury, or cost. It is about whether a person leaves treatment with the tools necessary to survive in the real world. Based on my experience, this program does not provide those tools. Update from patient who was scammed by Capo by the Sea. After repeatedly requesting our medical records from Capo by the Sea they finally sent them to us almost a full two weeks later. Our meds would run out long before the two weeks that it took them to send us our paper work, but they know this. They intentionally held back our records making it impossible to get after care that they did not provide for us. I still have a huge scar on my arm where one of the employees took my blood pressure below my arm. One month later and my scar is huge and looks like it is permanent. I was moved from one of the main houses at midnight when I was supposed to attend a meeting at 7:30 the next am. I was told I had 2 hours to pack after rolling me. I was given no warning and hadn't even done anything to get into trouble. I spent over a hour going through readmission because John owns all 3 houses houses/rehabs but San Juan is a different house (bad, disgusting, unsanitary) and has is own computer system.. I was never told I would go to the San Juan house.. I had been staying in the Monticetito house, photo attached. A beautiful mansion, in a gated community to a lesser quality house that had mold on the ceilings, photos attached. The owner, John flew me there but would not fly me home, which is entrapment. This caused a disruption in my sleep health that I had been working hard on to improve and overall recovery health. I had been living with the same people in the Monticetito house for a few weeks then they expected me to bond with new people for my last couple weeks there. There were early am meetings in a park above the beach, we sat in a circle in folding chairs in the grass! This was not how the morning aa meetings were described to me over the phone. The owner, John ran them and they were at 7:30 every morning except Sunday and it was always cold and wet. We were all in lawn chairs. This was supposed to be a luxury Rehab. The house I was moved to didn't even attend all the same meetings as Capo House and Monticetito House. After I had spent so much time bonding with those people I lived with in the Monticetito house, being moved to a lesser quality house with people I didn't know as well was very hurtful. Especially because I had insurance paying thousands of dollars a day! This other house, that I was moved to with mold on the ceilings, isn't even on their website. I am deeply disappointed in how this facility is run. I have screenshots of exactly how the website looked during the time I was there with snapshots and time stamps. As well as photos of the homes. Prior to that situation, John was notified that the hot water stopped working at the Monticetito house. He said he wanted to fix it himself, Instead of calling a repair service, which is illegal and unethical considering we didn't have water until late that night. And it was fixed by a tech that worked there. John never even stopped by to fix it. Two different clients tried to fix the water heater but were unsuccessful. Why should a client have to resort to doing John's job? He is the "owner". It came out later that John had been sued in the past because he forced all opiate addicts to have a narcan implant in their bodies, it was mandated by John, until he was arrested and served jail time. I flew across the country, from Ohio to California to attend this rehab and to work on my ptsd. I never even got to do EMDR! Which I was promised. I have deeply effected by John's treatment of women at the facility. He charged women more money than men, never invited me to golf, only men. Also, he never invited me to church, which is illegal. You can't deny someone to attend church. Each staff member privately spoke to me and are aware of John's issues. They all had something bad to say about him and he is dangerous. John picked up one of the clients at night, told him he had a package for him. The client went outside, John told him to get into his car and John drove 100mph down the road. All staff is concerned about John and the facility but are afraid to speak up because they can't lose their jobs. I Was told there was a pool- No pool. That was for 15-20 people and that's all he would spend? There were many days there was nothing to eat at all, so I would have to use my own money and go grocery shopping. Complete scam, sad. Also, a client suffered a medical emergency while I was there and staff was no help. I keep telling her to call 911 But she kept just staring at me. Thankfully another client and her husband were there and they called 911 and gave the address. I told Rachel, the clinical director that the staff needed to be updated on what to do in an emergency Bc ever second counts in an emergency situation. The faster the patient is treated, the better the chance the patient will survive. I was moved after that. Maybe that was my punishment. Who knows, all I know is I want all my money back. read more

I was told I was going to Capo by the Sea Montecito. Patty sent photos and it was NOTHING like I was told. They are SUPER pushy on money. They want it all upfront. I asked, "Since I'll be here for 90 days.. Is it refundable? What if I don't like it and leave after one day?" Patty beats around the bush and never gives a direct answer. She eventually said, "of course it's non-refundable". I flew from Indiana to Cali really looking forward to this. Walked in, tech (blonde hair, piercings) was immediately SUPER RUDE and uninviting. Asked for a tour and she scoffed.... Probably because curtains are stained, beds had blood on them (another reviewer mentioned this and I didn't believe it - IT'S TRUE), and the house is literally falling apart. Waste of my fucking time. And to think I was going to an "EXECUTIVE, LUXURY REHAB" as stated on their site. What a joke. See attached photos of the actual house. I just completed a 28 day program for Alcohol abuse at Capo by the Sea. They are fantastic and put me on the right track for a sober lifestyle. Everyone that works at Capo if friendly, helpful, intelligent, accommodating and they saved my life! Capo by the Sea gives you the tools and support to lead a sober life. I was comfortable there and had my own room. The food is fantastic and they have a great chef. The facility is clean and they treat you like a real person, an adult. I had my computer and cell phone the entire time I was there and freedom to leave the facility. If I needed to get a haircut or go to a a specific store they gave me a ride. Now that I am home I have more than 20 new friends from residents to staff that I can call anytime. I highly recommend Capo! They will help you with your addiction today. I recently stayed at Capo by the Sea ("Capo") for 30 days due to alcoholism which has become very severe over the last 2+ years. During that time I have been through over 10 rehab/detox programs in 4 different states. Previously each time I would either stay only through detox or make it through detox and leave shortly after entering the rehab part of the program, never making it even close to a full 30 days. The reason for leaving varied but typically was for one of the following reasons: other patients, facilities, staffing, lack of freedom/mobility and/or access to electronics. Unlike prior detox/rehab programs, Capo checked all the boxes for me. My first search criteria was finding a place that allowed me to bring my puppies which Capo does. Being able to spend time with them when I was not in group truly made a huge difference for me and wasn't something I had previously considered with past programs. With respect to the other reasons noted above, Capo also excelled above other programs. Electronics (phone, iPad, laptop, etc.) are allowed at all times unless you give them a valid reason to restrict use which I didn't see during my stay. I think this is an often overlooked item, but it was always a big issue for me. As a working professional it is almost impossible to effectively monitor both work and personal responsibilities that may arise when you don't have, or have very limited, access to emails for 30, 60 or 90+ days. In addition, after accomplishing certain milestones you may have the ability to take a ride share to places such as the grocery store (excellent food is already provided but some individuals wanted other options as well), gym or to get a haircut. The other patients that were in my groups were also largely all very intelligent working professionals around my age and I was able to benefit from their experiences in dealing with addiction in ways that I couldn't at prior programs. The staff is also great across the board. I enjoyed getting the chance to know many of them and learning from their prior experiences. The staff was always responsive to any requests that I had and were extremely helpful in helping me get through the program. Lastly the facilities were some of the best I have experienced. The multiple houses are all very nice and upscale. The house I stayed in (Montecito) had a large fenced in back yard which was perfect for my puppies. The main house, which is where you will go to attend the daily meetings, is only a couple blocks from the ocean so it was nice being able to walk to the park overlooking the ocean during breaks. I was a heavy drinker for more than 25 years. Capo by the Sea was my first attempt at rehabilitation for alcoholism. Alcohol was my sole form of recreation. I worked and I drank. Alcoholism only required one thing from me, keep drinking. My alcoholic mind accepted the tradeoff, drinking instead of living a balanced life. Excuses didn't work anymore, I was a drunk, racing full tilt to an early death. I needed to stop drinking, some way, somehow. And I recognized I needed professional help to do that. Thankfully, I chose Capo by the Sea to help me stop drinking and restore my sanity. I drove to San Juan Capistrano thinking that if I changed my mind on the way, I could turn around, and if I hated it, I could easily leave. That wasn't the case. Patty and the staff at the Montecito house were welcoming and within a few days I started to feel like "l can do this." My house mates were great and made me feel at home. After detoxing for three days, I started the daily routine of group meetings and psychotherapy. For a couple of weeks, I was angry at myself for being there and thus, angry at the program. I thought a lot of it was BS and at times, I participated half-heartedly. After getting sober, I felt like I don't need this, I can manage my drinking. I mistook my new clarity of mind as being the cure for my alcoholism. Of course, this was just beginning of my recovery and with the help of the staff, I began to understand my disease better and learn the tools of a sober lifestyle. Most importantly, how to apply these skills and stay sober on the outside. The daily routine quickly morphed into a vacation of sorts. Not including a 2 1/2 week vacation over Christmas, I spent 90 days in the program that I characterized when I arrived as a combination resort-prison. I needed every day of the three months. It gave me safe place to learn and practice my new sober lifestyle. The program taught me so much more than just how to stop drinking. It taught me how to like myself, how to make friends after many years of not giving a damn, how to let go of negativity and judgements, that I am not the center of the universe, that life is worth living, and daily gratitude for my newfound sobriety and life. All this newfound self-knowledge dovetailed with my sobriety. I miss the morning meetings at the Pines, the camaraderie of the Capo community and the rock-and-roll church. I go to daily AA meetings and church to continue the sense of community I felt at Capo. From John on down, I cannot thank everyone enough at Capo, including the friends I made, for helping me in my recovery journey. The program saved my life. It was a wonderful place to get back on track in life. This is the place to go to get sober! My husband and I went to Capo by the Sea in March of 2023...Still sober today!!!! They allowed us to bring our old dog, they took care of all of our food restriction needs, they listened when something in our rooms went array or if either one of us weren't feeling right. The whole staff made us laugh, they were there if we needed a shoulder to cry on or even complain too, ( if we had any, it was rare) and did something to take care of what ever it might have been that we requested ( with in the rehab guidelines of safety). Capo, quite simply, saved my life. I was in the darkest of dark places, plagued by anxiety brought on in large part by alcohol use. I came in afraid of others passing judgement on me and unsure of what was to come...but I was met with kindness, empathy, and support. The staff is incredible, to say the least. The clinicians are knowledgable and provided much-needed therapy in both individual and group settings; I got the most, I think, out of my cognitive based therapy (CBT). In addition, the staff responsible for our well being while at the Montecito house was helpful and always willing to lend an ear when I needed to be heard. I consider a few of them friends still today, 19 months post-treatment. My fellow treatment-seekers, many of whom I consider close friends, treated me with the support, advice, and friendship I desperately needed at the time. The facilities are nice and comfortable; I felt safe and, eventually, very much at home. I cannot say enough about Capo, but I will leave you all with this: I spent 60 days at Capo, I did the work, and I can now proudly say that I am 19 months sober with no real inclination to drink. I know there is no cure for alcoholism...but I received the gift of a treatment program that has put my life back on track, with so much to look forward to. The people I met at Capo will be friends for life, and I am so, so eternally grateful to John, Emily, Cat, Ana, and everyone else who played such an important role in getting me to where I am today. read more

My Capo journey started when I began researching places that would allow me to have my phone so I could be in contact with my husband during pandemic restrictions, and Capo was one of the places that came up. My husband and I called, and immediately felt like this was the right place for me/us. I'm an alcoholic, and my husband is a "normie." Although, my recovery was the main focus, Capo was incredibly inclusive of him, even better than the simple phone calls we were hoping for, they allowed him to visit me, join in on meetings/groups at times, and offered us couples counseling. Capo understands that Alcoholism is a family disease that affects everyone in the home, and they encouraged us both to get support and help we needed. Aside from our relationship, I knew I truly wanted to be sober, for myself, not just my husband and family. After having decided that, Capo was able to help me the rest of the way. The only thing I needed to do was to come in with honesty, openness, and willingness, and Capo provided all the tools I needed while I was there, and to prep me for when I left. This rehab went above and beyond. The morning meetings everyday, sharing what we're grateful for, the one-on-one therapy, groups, meals being cooked and provided, encouragement to go out and try outside meetings (such as celebrate recovery, and the bridge), they really tried to provide a variety of ways to help each individual with their recovery. Did I feel like going all the time? No, but did Capo always try to give me the best experience, and work with whatever emotions I was feeling? Yes. They encouraged me to stay in rehab for 90 days, and I'm so glad I did. They discussed with me and sent statistics on sobriety success for people who stay in treatment longer. I felt encouraged to stay because they had my best interest in mind, not because they were money hungry. I really believe Capo has built a team that cares about helping people. Several of the staff members are in recovery themselves, and truly want to perpetuate a sense of worth and new life in others after having experienced first hand what its like to stand in front of the gates of hell. The entire staff was incredible, there's too many names of wonderful people to list. They were so helpful, and willing to talk whenever I had questions, or issues, whether they be positive or negative.The people who work at Capo really walk the walk, by being of service to their clients. They provided me with respect, empathy, and showed interest in me as an individual. I have high hopes, that with the help of my higher power, and my recovery community, I will never have to come back to Capo as a client, and can come back as a visitor. Spent a little over a month here after I had burned my life to the ground for the last time. They really take care of you here and offer all the tools and guidance you could need to get out of your own way and take sobriety seriously. The techs and counselors are awesome, they've been there and they get it. I think the owners are losing their marbles but they mean well. The setting is really laid back, you almost forget you're in treatment. The area is beautiful and it has a great recovery community. read more

After I posted my review, Capo By The Sea attempted to indimidate me into taking down my honest post about my experience there. They began bullying me on yelp posing as a lawyer threatening me to take down my "false lies" and saying "the first amendment doesn't cover your right to say these things" (yes it does, this is literally the REAL LIFE experience I endured at the facility). Then, when I refused to relent, the organization began sending "Cease and Desist" letters to my parents in order to get them to indimidate me into taking down my post. Any "rehabilition center" that claims to focus on patient wellbeing does not threaten its patients if they have a horrible experience. Rather, well-reputed institutions try to learn what is wrong (I am not the only person on this page with an overwhelmingly horrible experience at Capo) and fix them for the benefit of future clients. All I want to add here is that another reviewer posted the inappropriate, unprofessional and compromising relationships staff members have with each other. I can personally attest that nurse Jackie (who is a bully in the most junior high sense of the word) is in a relationship with Jeff, both whom wield a lot of power in the houses. Their relationship is unhealthy because if a woman is having an issue with Jackie in her house (quite often, all the girls dread being in Jackie's house), that woman's complaint to Jeff often goes unanswered. This place is corrupt and the only thing they specialize in is preying upon the weak and vulnerable. read more
