I saw this place being recommended by many of the local moms in the Maple Valley/Covington Mom group on facebook, so I checked out their website and found that Han Mu Do incorporates Aikido/Hapkido in their teaching! I contacted Washington Han Mu Do for my son to attend the trial class. My son loved the trial class, and he wanted to continue (He is one of the most undecisive kid on this earth, and him wanting to continue is a big deal). It's been almost 2 months since he started, and he loves the classes. The environment is very family friendly and they teach the kids respect and discipline in addition to martial arts (which my son needs badly). Their prime location is also what sealed the deal for us. They are located within close distance from the local elementary schools, which makes it convenient to take my son to the class after picking him up from the after school program. In the same center, there is Taco Time and McDonalds just across the street for easy dinner after the class.

Not so great if you want a mix of the physical and mental, yin and yang, contrary to the yin-yang symbol incorporate into their logo. While Han Mu Do is a good form of martial arts, the Maple Valley location is the only location in Washington State. You will likely start over if you leave. With only a few licensed instructors, mature students are often relied upon heavily to lead lower students and classes. Favorites are compensated, others are not. As a result, the schedule is not reliable due to leader availability. Unlike Washington Han Mu Do, other martial arts studios often include some aspects of Asian philosophy, such as an active focus on the balance between mind and body, meditation as part of the session, and understanding that spirit and body need to be in harmony. This studio is about forms, sets, and workouts. Repeat. Overall, a good cost to experience ratio when compared to a gym or other exercise place. But is that really what you wanted to do when you join a martial arts studio?

I joined specifically because I was told there were ladies-only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes. As a complete beginner, I was only comfortable training in a women-only environment, and that was the primary reason I chose this gym. I spent nearly $500 on a punch card and required training gear based on that understanding. When I signed up, Luke specifically told me that the punch card would not expire. Months later, I was informed that it actually had a six-month expiration policy. More importantly, the ladies-only classes that were the entire reason I enrolled were eventually removed from the schedule altogether. When I raised concerns, the solution offered was for me to attend regular mixed-gender classes. That completely missed the point. I had been clear from the beginning that I was not comfortable training with men and would not have signed up otherwise. I attempted to find a reasonable resolution and even suggested alternatives, including one-on-one instruction. Instead, my refund request was denied despite the fact that the specific program I signed up for no longer exists. What I found most disappointing was the lack of professionalism and accountability. After spending hundreds of dollars and making multiple efforts to resolve the matter respectfully, I was left with services I cannot use, no meaningful solution, and ultimately no response to my follow-up email. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend T3MA.

Koei Kan Martial Arts Academy in Bellevue is the kind of place that becomes a part of your family, a place where you sweat, where you push yourself, where you grow, and where you learn. This is an awesome dojo, and can't say enough good things about this place…read more This dojo is definitely more on the fighting/kumite side of karate, while other traditional aspects of karate are taught, everything with this style goes back to kumite/fighting in the end. Sparring is freeform and rarely point although point fighting is taught as it's apart of the system. They also practice bogu kumite which if your unfamiliar with I suggest looking it up! The sensei's/students are very mindful about limitations and will meet you wherever you are. Throws/take downs and ground fighting are also heavily focused on. Many students cross train in this system and bjj, the school also hosts bjj(gi/no gi) events and often hold training events with other styles. Again everyone is super mindful of limiations/experience and will meet you where you're​ at. On the lighter side kata (empty hand and weapons) are also taught and comes from a shudokan/shuri-te background. Bunkai (application of kata), nage (throws/takedowns/self defense techniques) are also taught and focused on. To sum it all up, this dojo is great no matter where you are in martial arts (new or experienced), great for kids/family's too, and offer flexible training times throughout the day. It's well worth checking out!
