Absolutely the Worst Dining Experience - Poorly Managed and Not Worth the Wait Avoid this place during and after supper time, especially on busy weekends. We arrived at Captain Dan's at 7:28 PM on a hot summer Saturday (July 12,2025) during a local festival. As expected, the place was packed -- a lineup of about 20 people just to get seated on the second floor. We asked if the beer garden served meals and were told yes, so we got a table and waited... and waited... and waited. One waitress kept walking by with drinks, bills, payment machines -- but never once stopped at our table. I tried waving my menu to catch her attention. After 30 minutes, my wife finally got up to speak to her directly, and only then did she come take our order. I asked for the seafood chowder, and my wife ordered the overpriced lobster roll with fries. We received our glass of water fairly quickly -- but that was it. Around 8:00 PM, they put up a sign saying the second floor was closed, but no one warned us about what was coming. We then waited ANOTHER full hour -- until around 9:00 PM -- when a different waiter came to inform me that they had run out of seafood chowder. He asked if I wanted to order something else, but at that point, why bother? It was already late, and I had no intention of sitting around another 30-60 minutes for greasy bar food. They completely wasted our evening. This disaster falls entirely on poor management. It was the middle of July -- a hot Saturday night during festival season -- and yet the place was drastically understaffed. For the beer garden alone, there were about 75 patrons, with only four waiters to serve drinks, take orders, deliver food, and manage the entire first floor inside as well. That's easily another 40-50 people. It was obvious the team was overwhelmed. Rather than plan ahead or manage the chaos, they kept letting people in and seating them on the second floor -- even though the staff and kitchen clearly couldn't keep up. There was no mention of wait times, no communication, and no accountability. If you can't serve your customers, you have to close areas down earlier, not after everyone is already frustrated and hungry. To top it off, the lobster roll was also wrong -- butter only, even though my wife ordered the one with mayonnaise. We've been eating here 3-4 times a season for years. The only time I'd ever consider returning is at lunchtime, when the crowd is smaller -- because it seems like they have the exact same staffing levels at noon as they do on a busy Saturday night. That's just greedy, short-sighted management. Avoid this place unless you enjoy wasting two hours for subpar food and no service. read more

Bad service, can't hardly get a drink. Have to wave down a waitress to get any attention. Good fish but bad chips. Staff can be either good at the upper bar or very rude and bad at the lower bar. Not worth your time. But they are one of only two restaurant/bars on the Shediac Wharf so perhaps they don't care about customer satisfaction. First you have to pay to get on the wharf. Then you get there to find it is not handicap accessible. The wait staff need to tone up their listening skills and stop gossiping with other servers. The fish was nicely battered but the fish itself was not Haddock or just on the old side and over cooked. The lobster roll was terrible the fries frozen. The Miami Vice we excellent but they don't make the there because it would require them to was two blenders. We didn't eat the main entre and only half the fries. Just okay. With my adult children and the service was slow and inattentive, all the food came out at different times. I tried to reorder drinks and the server only seemed attentive once she noticed a couple of my kids leaves while I waited for a check. Seated next to the register with music and speakers on full blast so we were unable to carry on a normal conversation. Didn't receive the roll, coleslaw was "all out" and had to ask for a hand wipe.Was served cold. I had the seafood platter. Red potatoes were black and unseasoned. Fish was over cooked and dry. Such a shame. Place is rustic looking and has loads of potential. Good view of water. Came for late lunch with the family. Quite disappointing. No music, poor atmosphere, unhappy looking staff , (but they tried). Soggy fish and chips, calamari, fries. Like the oil not hot enough. No offer of compensation just exchange of food. Over charged for beer and fry upgrade. At that point we were comp'd for the fries. Discount quality grocery store potato salad and coleslaw. Warm lobster roll was okay. If you're going to fall for a tourist trap, Captain Dan's is probably one of the best you could fall for. It isn't bad at all, maybe a little pricier than otherwise, but not a bad deal. Locals can tip you off to better places, but if you didn't know any better, or to take advantage of the gorgeous location, this is a fine place to stop indeed. On our visit I had the fish and chips, and wow, what a huge portion of fish! Served in a basket, the three pieces of battered fish that come with a regular portion sit atop the fries, with a cup of tartar sauce and another of coleslaw. The meal comes with a choice of potatoes: fries, crispy reds, or potato salad. Crispy reds are small red potatoes, quartered and friend. They aren't exactly crispy, but are they ever delicious! I highly recommend them. The drinks are a little pricey for what they are, but that's expected based on location. They have your standard Moosehead and Coors and the like, along with mixed drinks and a few wines. The location though is wonderful. Perched on the Pointe-de-Chene wharf, the only way to be eating closer to the coast would be to be eating on a boat. Unfortunately the day of our visit it was quite chilly, but I could see myself lingering for another drink or two on a warm summer evening, waiting for the sun to set. read more

Amazing seafood and soooo fresh. My partner and I shared a mixed grill which had lobster, mackerel, scallops and shrimp in a garlic sauce and a starter of lobster and cheese stuffed mushrooms. It was all delicious. Nice casual atmosphere and and friendly service. Right on the wharf so you can watch the sailboats while enjoying the food and drinks. read more

This was a random stop, but it looked really good. The was good and very fresh. We had the Jumbo Lobster role and the Sea food broil. The Sea Food broil was amazing. You must try it !!! The Lobster roll tasted good, but disappointed with the size. We thought the Jumbo would be big, but it was a burger size bun. The price was a bit more expensive than expected. Food was good and plentiful. Sevice was horrible. It took 25 minutes before we were served our drinks.

Avoid if you can. Soup was warm, plastic water cups (not glasses) no malt vinegar, no iced tea, no coffee. Complete disappointment. I could go on but not worth it. read more

As someone with Celiac Disease I was pretty nervous about eating here but I was pleasantly surprised that I was not only able to eat here but had a good amount of choices. I had mussels to start and had a lobster roll with fries for supper. I enjoyed my whole meal and the service was great! Great view of the ocean as well. read more

I arrived at 7:35 on a Friday night when google maps tells me it's open till 8:30. pouring rain and windy, I arrived at the door frazzled and wet and was told they're closed. People were in sight, eating and drinking. this was the one stain on my otherwise wonderful Canadian trip.
