I don't want to give away anything but I definitely learned about US history as well. Our tour took about 90 minutes, Cindy made sure to position us so we were out of the glare and offered options for sitting at several of the stops - the total walk was under a mile and totally manageable for the group which included my husband & myself, my 73 year old parents and my 12 & 15 year olds. It's not a standard spooky ghost story tour (although there are a few good ghost stories), it's an entertaining way to get a historical perspective of this island,

I just wasn't impressed. As an organization, NASA has lost a lot of its luster in the public eye, but just on a practical level, this building was basically just one hall with some exhibits, a rooftop deck where you couldn't see much, and a movie theater basically playing short, vague ads for what they do on a loop. The site seemed dated; there is some majesty in exploring old ruins sometimes, but looking at a rocket with lichen growing it just doesn't activate that same sense of wonder for me. It's free, but I just took a modest look around and figured I'd rather be at the beach. My hope is that the substantive business that NASA does in the area is worthwhile even if this visitor center doesn't offer much.

Lots of nature, locally owned businesses, that working-class family vibe - it doesn't come off with that snotty rich kid "my family owns a shore house" attitude that many beach towns seem to have. So what if the houses aren't too fancy, the restaurants aren't gourmet, and the people aren't too good-looking? You want that crap, go elsewhere. Chincoteague has natural beauty and real small town character that you're not going to find anywhere else.

The John B. Whealton Memorial Causeway is also known as the Chincoteague Causeway. It carries State…read moreRoute 175 between the mainland of Virginia's Eastern Shore to the island town of Chincoteague. The causeway is made up of FIVE bridges and includes an unusual intersection over the water that makes up a three-way bridge. I can't say I've ever seen one of those before! The causeway has four fixed bridges and one drawbridge that goes over the Chincoteague channel. The new bridge was completed in 2010. As you're driving out to Chincoteague, you'll wonder what all those huge satellite dishes are that are behind some very impressive barbed wire fencing and razor wire with very prominent "do not trespass" signs. That's the NASA Wallops Flight Facility that includes a carrier landing practice runway as well as the secondary rocket launch base.
