Be careful where you park, the roads are narrow, and you could block the ways in or out, and be careful of incoming cars, or outgoing cars, because u don;t see or hear them coming or going, and many people made this mistake. Sometimes, it's totally dead, and no one around, then suddenly lots of people show up. I was there for over an hour, in this cycled through like this a lot! i do hope I can return some day!

"Never knowing my right foot from my left My hat from my…read moreglove I'm too misty and too much in love" (Johnny Mathis) As we were driving down the main drag on Chincoteague Island, I caught sight of an imposing blackened bronze statue of a horse, which I soon learned was from a children's book named "Misty of Chincoteague" written by Marguerite Henry in 1947. Now since I spent my childhood reading Twilight Zone books and biographies of Mickey Mantle, I had never heard of Misty. The book tells the story of a Spanish ship that wrecked off Virginia's coast so the hundreds of the ponies being transported had to swim to nearby islands to survive. They lived as feral horses for centuries and are still there to this day. One of the horses was adopted by a young brother and sister and named the Chincoteague mare "Misty". The book was so popular that it spawned five sequels, the last of which was written in 1992. The statue shows Misty galloping along a beach next to a rooster and a duck. The statue and plaque were dedicated by the Misty of Chincoteague Foundation on June 14, 2006, to honor the upcoming 60th anniversary of the book's publication. What a cool and interesting sight to see!

This site is the end of the island, and one passes the relatively built up marina to get to this…read moremuch more peaceful and natural destination. You can park at the marina and it is free to enter. The memorial itself is a cross constructed of wooden masts. I'm not sure that all watermen view the cross in the same light, but as an aesthetic experience it is compelling. There is a little bit of a trail to an overlook of the marsh between Chincoteague and Assateague. I was glad to discover that just as I'd hoped, it turned out to be a fantastic location to catch a sunset.

He He was helpful in answering questions as well. I will say that is way colder than you can imagine on the VERY windy water, and my 3 layers of clothing were not enough to keep me warm. No matter how tough you think you are, wear at minimum 2 *heavy* layers of clothing, and a thick windbreaker (my think raincoat did not hold up) and a hat to keep your head and ears warm. It's not just that it's 10 degrees colder on the water -- it's a constant cold wind blowing at you... and that's on a day when there wasn't a strong wind on the island itself. If you're not properly dressed, you won't find it relaxing. Although this tour company does warn you about the colder weather on the boat, it does not sufficiently warn you about the constant unrelenting wind.

Captain Shane brought us to the dolphins and they put on a show. There were dolphins everywhere and it was a sight to see. We wanted to extend our tour as we had only booked a one hour tour and Captain Shane was able to get us booked for another hour in order to see the wild ponies. We not only saw wild ponies, but a bald eagle as well and so many pelicans. Captain Shane took us around the whole island and was just an overall great tour guide. 100% book this tour!
