You really can't go wrong with a dozen raw local oysters and grilled flounder. We ripped through the oysters like someone was about to take them away. Chincoteague oysters are clean tasting, very briny, and super tender. I just had it with a generous squeeze of lemon and that's all I needed. I will dream of those oysters, seriously. The grilled flounder was fresh, but a little under seasoned. It would have been A+ if it had been generously salted before grilling (adding salt at the table just isn't the same). BTW, a flounder platter has three filets - so I'd recommend sharing. The sides were also generously portioned. (Onion rings will make you happy.) We had a great server, we were glad we visited during low season because I bet this place is PACKED when tourists are around. read more

Maybe we'd come back to try something else, but probably we'd just leave this joint for the locals and check out another place. What we got: Cream of crab soup - 4* the best thing of the night. It was delicious and I wish it came with a buttered piece of bread I could dip in it. Coconut shrimp basket - 3* the shrimp are very coconut-y and I realized I just didn't love that. It came with 6 pieces of shrimp, way too many fries (they were only mediocre), 2 delicious hush puppies (best I've ever had), and 1 pickle (nice crunch). The coleslaw side was also good and had apples. Overall though I was disappointed that $17 got me a pretty unsatisfying dish. Fish and chips (friend flounder) - 3* average but nothing to write home about. Once again a lot of fries (obviously, it's a fish and chips meal) but they just weren't that good. My daughter and mom were craving some seafood, so we called in an order here. If you order over $50 of food you will have to pay by phone. Otherwise you can pay at the restaurant. They were busy at the time so it was a 30-45 minute wait, but the person who took our order offered to call when it was ready. Which was nice!! We got a cheese pizza, crab soup, crab legs, and a cod sandwich with chips . The pizza was very chef boyardee basic as far as the sauce. It's not flavorful, but it was only $11 and a good size. The kids thought it was ok. The cod looked good but was bland and chewy. If it had a little flavor/seasoning it would have been better I think. It was a good portion size though. We found the bartenders to be sociable the crowd to be friendly and I will tell you that the softshell crabs were off the hook. Good beer, and good pours. Met some friends there they were also going to the oyster Fest and frankly everybody in the bar talked to anybody else -- it was like hanging out at your local Tappy. Outstanding! This was recommended to us and boy did she hit it out of the park! Staff is super friendly, everyone here inside and outside are having a good time, it's not too loud and it's easy going. The food was spectacular! I had the Fish (cod) & chips. They are in these perfect rectangular blocks instead of giant slabs, so they're perfect for dipping in tartar and they were lightly battered, not too crispy and not too soft either, packed full of flavor along with the fries and his puppies, also well fried. The drinks were a Marsh Mud Slide and a Mermaid Lemonade, very well made. The bartender came back and added a mermaid to my wife's glass, that was cool of her. The Chincoteague Salty Oyster platter was amazing. The onion rings again were battered well and fried not too hard or soft, the oysters were the same. Stopped by for a quick lunch on a Friday. It's a cool looking place and has beach vibes everywhere even though it was November. I believe they are open year round. Pretty standard beach eats with lots of fried items on the menu. Ordered a crab cake platter, soft shell crab platter, clam chowder, fish and chips and a dozen oysters. Crab cakes at this restaurant does live up to the hype. It's definitely all crab and no fillers. Soft shell crabs were too oily as it just sucks up all the oil and becomes a little too much after two bites. If you are craving soft shell crabs just order it as a sandwich. Oysters were a bit of a disappointment. We have a place in RI and get oysters all the time and the local ones in Chincoteague were no match to the ones coming out of Narragansett Bay. These were just too salty and did not have any flavor. Fish and chips were good and the clam chowder was okay. Service was good. My major problem with the restaurant is just the crazy amount of one time plastic that it uses. It's evident they don't have a dishwasher and just go with 1time disposables. The amount of plastic use is just insane. From the beer cups to cutlery all one time use. If it wasn't for this I would have given the restaurant a 4 star on reviewing for the food and service alone. read more

After multiple attempts of both numbers being busy, we were finally able to place our order on the phone for pickup and they said it would be a 1.5 hour wait which was shocking but not a huge deal breaker since we weren't starving at the moment. However, the woman said she'd call us when the food was actually ready and it could be less than the time given and she ended up calling us back within maybe 20-30 minutes to let us know it was ready! We got a huge spread of food: the cod platter, flounder platter and crab cakes platter- all enough to feed more than one person since they give you two huge pieces of fish and two generous amount of sides. Seafood-amazing and fresh! Everything was seasoned and cooked well! The sides: potato salad, coleslaw, corn, baked beans and hush puppies. Hush puppies were a little overdone but everything else was delicious especially the coleslaw and corn. Coleslaw was one of the best we've ever had. We also got the cream of crab and the New England clam chowder and they were huge bowls! Definitely worth the money and hard to finish cause it was so big and so much on top of our main dishes. The soup was plentiful of clam and crab and again, one of the best soups we've ever had! This was our favorite meal on the island and know if we're ever back, we'll come back again! This place was within walking distance from our hotel. It's located on chincoteague island where finding seafood can be in abundance during the warm summer months. We were seated immediately by the window that had a strong sun beam. The restaurant decor was beach theme and clean. Our waitress provided us with menus and water. I ordered the shrimp tacos with in house made chips. The hubs had the cheeseburger with a side of potato salad. Food came in a timely manner. My shrimp was nicely seasoned, but I do wish there was more of the wasabi cucumber sauce dressed on top. It would've provided a refreshing kick to my tastebuds. I enjoyed the fresh slices of avocado paired with the shrimp. The in house chips were good and crispy. I would order this again. I did have some of my better half's potato salad, and it was great! I can see why people were leaving with medium size tubs of potato salad towards the end of our meal. It was creamy with just the right balance of mayonnaise, sweet, salty, and moderately firm potatoes. It was a great staycation for a day or two. The summer months can get packed so come prepared! We were down in the area to do the usual with seeing some ponies, walking on near deserted beaches and seeing a NASA rocket launch. While most of the restaurants in the area are either closed seasonally or on Mondays, Captain Zack's was open so hell, why not? What worked: Having the host tell us that sitting at the bar was our best bet as the rest of the room was probably 3/4 full and only being covered by two people. Our food aside from one thing was very good. No issue at all with the Seafood Boats, Grilled Scallop Platter or any of the sides we ordered. What didn't work: The Clam Strip Platter was bad. According to the menu description, you get a heaping portion and they are lightly fried. In reality the version we got was certainly heaping, but it was fried to the point of some pieces being inedibly overdone. While we didn't send back our order, another couple across the bar did while we were there. I do see a few complaints from some people on this listing mentioning slow service and in all honesty, they're not wrong. The restaurant for a Monday was very busy and the staff was struggling to keep up. While the food is good, it seems for it to be better to not be in a hurry if you come here. Overall in the offseason, there is only so much open in the surrounding area and most of it seems to either be rated poorly or is overpriced seafood places. Captain Zack's is a decent middle of the road seafood shack that not without a few hiccups, we would have no problem coming back to next time in town. read more

This is no longer just carry out. It is a full service restaurant. We were seated at the bar as the place was very full. I had a blood orange crush, I will give it a 4.5. Hubby had an Assateague IPA. We started with the fish fingers appetizer. My main, which were oysters, was served immediately. The bartender apologized and it was no big deal. I just set them aside. The appetizer was great. While fried, it was so lightly fried it did not feel heavy at all. Hubby had the grilled cod tacos, served with fries and hush puppies. Once that was delivered, I could start my Chincoteague oysters. They were nicely shucked, no grit or shell. The tacos were stuffed full and very good! I loved that the bartender brought over some extra ice for my crush. Positives - pretty much the whole experience. We enjoy sitting at the bar, it is like dinner and a show. The only negative was the oysters being delivered way too early. This establishment has expanded into a sit down restaurant since I last visited this area several years ago. Ordered take out and was told it would take 45 mins because there was a very large order ahead of mine. It seemed to take about 25 mins and was called and I drove back to pick the order up. Once I returned I had to wait at least 10 minutes to be given my order, as the woman at the front was taking another detailed and long order. I eventually asked another staff person passing by to get my order for me which he kindly did. Ordered oyster poor boy which came w homemade chips (tasted a little burnt), hush puppies and a dill pickle. Everything tasted okay. Oysters could use more seasoning. The hush puppies were nice and crispy on the outside and tasted average otherwise. There is an extra 50 cent charge if you order both tarter and cocktail sauce. read more

My wife and I have eaten at Captain Zacks a few times . Last night we had dinner there and it was ABSOLUTELY TOP NOTCH! First the hostess was spot on with the wait time . We don't mind waiting when it's worth it. The waitress was polite, pleasent and attentive . The food was SUPERB. I had the blackened rockfish and it was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The sides were fresh and large in portion. My wife had the Ahi and it too was amazing. As for the price I didn't even care. That meal was worth ever cent !
