My husband and I had lunch at Ropewalk a couple of weeks ago because a friend had given us a gift card there. Being in mid March, we were offered a table close to the bar (away from the windows), so we'd stay warmer --but we couldn't resist the lure of sitting on the high chairs and looking out at the boat traffic, sparse as it was. So we just kept our light jackets on. Once the food and drinks began arriving and the music cranked up a bit, the place easily felt twenty degrees warmer anyway. The food was really good. Fresh, savory, done just right. The waitress was helpful: proactive, attentive, but also gave space. Our last visit was in March 2025 to which we enjoyed our visit and meals. Things certainly changed between then and July 2026. They were out of several draft and bottled craft beers. We specifically asked for the sauce on the tuna appetizer to be served on the side as it only needs a little. That did not happen. The kicker was the $23 fish & chips. One piece of fish (as shown in the attached picture) that was falling apart, not crispy and somewhat soggy. The waffle fries would have been decent if they hadn't been sitting for an extended period before serving. My wife ordered the same and was better (hot) but still one piece of fish. For a town/region know for fresh fish, this is well below local standard. Our bartender was OK but preferred serving the locals, some of whom were clearly there all day drinking themselves into a stupor. Save your money for betters places while visiting Chincoteague. read more

We sat at the outside bar during happy hour and were disappointed by the service. We waited a long time for our food and in between drinks, and at times it honestly felt like we were being ignored. The guy next to us was a regular who asked about my husband's entree as it took about an hour to come out. His oyster appetizer took about 30 minutes when asked for more crackers the bartender said okay I have a box right here,15 minutes later I asked a lady behind the bar for them as the bartender totally forgot. What really stood out to me was something very unusual and questionable that I saw behind the bar. The bartender took a completely empty vodka bottle and what appeared to be a full vodka bottle to the corner of the bar. He poured about 3/4 of the full bottle into the empty bottle, put the spout on, and then started pouring drinks. In Maryland, that would be a liquor board violation, and it definitely looked shady. I'm a lightweight, and after two crushes I usually feel relaxed. During this visit, I had five crushes over about 90 minutes and felt like I was drinking water. For a 150-pound female who doesn't drink much, that was extremely suspicious. It really made me feel like they water down their alcohol. Between the slow service, being ignored, and what I saw at the bar, I would not recommend this place for drinks. If you want good drinks, go somewhere else. read more

Stumbled upon this place about 3 years ago and had one of the best crab cakes in my life. It was so good that I'm thinking about it years later and had to come and write the review. 100% crab...No filler. I've stopped ordering crab cakes because of the lackluster quality of the crab. But it was absolutely worth it here. Light yet flavorful and juicy. Breading was seasoned and delicious. The rice with it was paired beautifully. And I loveddddd the buttery greens. My husband and I stopped here for lunch on a Saturday in November. Since it was the off season, it was easy to get a table. I was really excited when the bartender was able to make me a mocktail since I'm pregnant and they didn't have any mocktails listed on their drink menu. The bartender was very attentive and friendly the whole duration of our luncheon. My husband got a crab cake sandwich ($26) and I got a grilled chicken sandwich ($16). Both were delicious and flavorful. The restaurant was clean and had ample parking out front. They have a really nice pirate-themed playground for kids that is fenced in. It looked good and was slightly over-cooked and lacking a little flavor. The clam chowder with crab claw meat was a lot better... creamy and satisfying. I'd definitely come back to Ropewalk, although it is a bit on the pricey side for what they're serving. I started off with the crabcake egg rolls and thought they were amazing - they're the main reason I want to come back. They were $18 for four pieces (two egg rolls cut in half), so the pricing isn't really competitive there, but I really enjoyed them. It was backfin meat or something, but there was a lot of it, and they were served hot and crispy with a tasty remoulade. I got the seafood cobb salad as a main. For $23 it was a little underwhelming. It came with a pile of "lump" crabmeat in the middle as well as six medium sized, cold shrimp, bacon, corn, and some whole cherry tomatoes. I kept forgetting there was crab meat in the salad and for the price there wasn't a ton of shrimp. But it was certainly edible, especially with the blue cheese dressing. I tried the pineapple-orange vinaigrette and that was interesting as well. For dessert I got the Mississippi mud cake which was tasty, but pretty small for $8. My partner got a dozen oysters and enjoyed them. We sat inside and the view of the water was gorgeous. It's the beginning of April and it was packed (we waited about 30 minutes) early Friday night. We sat outside in the sandy area until we were called, which was nice. Service was friendly and fairly prompt. Despite the prices, Ropewalk's got nice service and a great ambiance, so I'm looking forward to coming back and trying something new next time we visit. read more

I came here off-season: just prior to Thanksgiving so that might inform my experience. I liked this place a lot. I had a burger as it was half price Tuesdays along with seasoned waffle fries. I came hungry and it was delicious. The server was attentive and nice. My soda came in a literal pitcher (then you don't need to ask for a refill!) I can see how others would say the indoors could be loud if i was full. It was pretty noisy at only about 25% full when I was there. This place gets some bad reviews. Not sure if it is over-crowded in season. Or whether folks just made poor food choices. But we were very happy here. Beautiful spot right on the water. And conveniently located next to our hotel. Service was good. Wings were good. Rare tuna salad was amazing. Steak and mashed potatoes was good. Kids cheese burger meal totally acceptable. We happened to be in town for Valentine's Day, and decided to check out the place as it was next door to our hotel. We were greeted by very friendly service at the hostess station and lead to our table by the windows. Restaurant had a very bustling atmosphere, very good vibe. Excellent decor, with art / decor reflecting on the seafood, area, etc. Spotless. Appetizer - smoked (then fried) chicken wings with old bay seasoning - these were amazing, well seasoned, good flavor, tender / fall apart. Dinner - My wife had the jerk chicken (well seasoned, juicy), I had the crab cake (delicious, well seasoned). Both dishes were accompanied by fresh green beans (excellent sautéed) and island rice (pretty good). Dessert was lava cake, which was just ok. Cocktails - excellent. Will try a slush next time. Water served in mini beer pitchers was pretty fun. Our waitress - excellent. Attentive, efficient and friendly. All in all - we enjoyed our experience. if you're looking for a bar grill type place with a variety of things (including non-seafood items) and great cocktails, this is a place to try. They would not allow the three of us to do separate checks but told us we could pay separate when the check came, So when it came time to pay we tried to charge each card for the amount of items we had and she said she could only split it 3 ways. but when the check came, we could split the one check three ways. We thought it was for a local ad or something, he comes back asking if we wanted one of the printouts and then told us after the fact that we had to pay. Our party of two came here on a Saturday evening just before 8 PM without a reservation. We were able to be seated immediately at a high top and our drink orders were taken immediately. The key lime crush was a huge hit and the fact that the fountain soda/waters came in a personal pitcher was fantastic especially on a hot day. It was a little uncomfortably warm inside since the doors to the outdoor area were open, but we survived. The crab cake eggrolls were incredibly flavorful, the bada bing shrimp was a crowd pleaser (but nothing to write home about), the jerk spice seasoned wings were nice and crispy, the chicken tenders also scratched that itch for my kid's menu hankering, and the crab cake sandwich was delicious and the crispy waffle fries it came with were amazing. I had two kids with me (5 and 1), along with a stroller and they thought the best table to give me was one smack dab in the middle near the bar. So that wasn't super comfortable. We just had an early dinner at Ropewalk. It's a nice big open dining room with water views. We both chose the clam chowder and jumbo lump crab cake sandwich. The clams were barely noticeable in the clam chowder. It was weak potato chowder with a few scant bits of clam. Before we were even half done with the chowder, our crab cake sandwiches arrived. That was annoying, as we were trying to eat two hot dishes before either got cold. Now, the "jumbo lump" crab cake was a good size and fried lightly. However, we had to search for any jumbo lumps. There were maybe one or two in the entire crab cake. Just don't call it something it is not. And don't price it that way, either. Our server was very good but the food was not. read more

Each of my experiences at Ropewalk has been good, but not quite great. The food is good and they have different options than most of the other seafood focused restaurants on the island. The Tiki and other mixed drinks are nice too and tend to be well-made. And I like the ample outdoor seating and musicians. I do find the portions a bit small, though, and I think you can find better value elsewhere. read more

Date of event 6/17/26 afternoon. Two of our 4 entrees were COLD - the flounder roulade, we asked for new meals! The manager came to our table and stated the drinks for our table were free because of the poor quality of the meals. When the two checks came the receipts were wrong, we were charged for our drinks. When we questioned our charges the waitress informed the manager, she came over and stated very rudely " what's the issue now at this table!" We explained the drinks were on the bill, she lied stated she never said that the drinks were free. The also refused to seat us inside with the AC stated large private party booked-at no time was anyone seated in the inside (we were there at least 3 hours). Will never return!!!! read more

Came here for the happy hour deals - $1 oysters and 1/2 priced wings. Our server was nice and attentive and the atmosphere is great here. A ton of seating inside & out. The wings were great! My husband said they were some of the best he has ever had. The oysters tasted good but were so dirty that we had to pick shells and sand out of most of them. We stopped at Ropewalk and were really impressed with the views -- absolutely beautiful! The service was fast and friendly. We were told there'd be a 40-minute wait, but we only waited about 20, which was a nice surprise. I ordered the poke bowl, and it was pretty good. Not a ton of tuna, but still tasty overall. My friend got the short ribs, and that's where things went downhill. They definitely weren't braised -- the meat looked like it had been cooked earlier and just reheated. You could see the fat and juices separated on the plate, which wasn't very appetizing. The green beans were a mess. They looked like long, wrinkled green raisins. We asked for fresh ones, hoping it was just a mistake, but they brought out the same exact thing. Great location, solid poke bowl, but the short ribs and sides were a big miss. The decor was all very clean and welcoming, with friendly staff. We were seated promptly at a dockside booth large enough to fit our large party, including my kids and my nieces. The table was in clear view of the awesome playground area, which was super nice to be able to relax while the kids played. The adults' food was all very tasty, though a bit on the pricey side. The kids meals were served on frisbees, which was a neat feature, but the quality of the kids meals was pretty low when for the price, especially when you consider that kids drinks are not included in the price, which is pretty much unheard of for kids meals. The server was very sweet to the kids and very kind and helpful. Overall, I'd say that Ropewalk is a fantastic place for adults to eat. The kids... maybe order some adult meals to share? read more

The ambiance at ropewalk is 10/10! Great spot for a big group. Our family of 9 came here for dinner and we were seated at a big table outside overlooking the bay as the sun went down. Very tropical fun setting, and our server was great! I love that everyone gets their own full pitcher of water with a straw , definitely limits the number of refills needed. The setting feels like it would be standard fried beach bar food, but the quality is definitely a step up from that! They have a variety of options to please a crowd. The shrimp appetizer was probably my favorite thing. So crispy and slightly sweet. And the spinach artichoke crab dip was top tier! Very thick with big chunks of crab which I loved. I got the scallops dish, and although it was good, I definitely had some notes. It needed more of the corn and tomatoes; there were really only a few. And the crab pieces were too small so they blended in too much with the orzo. The dish was flavorful just nothing impressive, although it has a lot of potential. Several people ordered the flounder, which looked a lot better. The tuna tacos looked good too, the seafood salad was definitely a skip though. They have a pretty solid drink menu of crushes which fit the setting, although their cocktails are wayyyy too sweet. I'd probably give the food a 2-3, but the ambiance is so nice which makes it worth going! Probably a better spot for drinks and apps than a full dinner. read more

Tried this place for dinner with the family. I would says it's around 3.5 stars. It's a very average seafood restaurant. Everything was reasonably good, but nothing I would go back for. Had some of the soups, flounder, crab dip and egg rolls. It was a fairly busy and loud restaurant, but our service was fairly prompt and we got our food pretty quick. Overall, if you're looking for a really good meal, especially seafood, I don't think this place is it. If you're looking for a quick place that has something for the kids it's not bad. read more

"As long as I gaze on Waterloo sunset I am in paradise" (The Kinks) Ropewalk was a great place to see the famous Chincoteague sunsets. Ropewalk is also a great place to see if you're a fan of former President Ronald Reagan, because a large statue of the Gipper greets you into the dining room, a bust of Ronnie smiles at you from behind the bar, and you can buy T-shirts of the man on the way out. Ropewalk was a great place to visit on a Monday, because its one of the few places open that day. So those are the high points. Here are the improvement opportunities: There was no one at the hostess station, so another waiting patron journeyed into the dining room to tell the staff there were people waiting to be seated. It took quite a long while for a server to take our order and a long time for the food to come out. We found Ropewalk very loud, with a few bar patrons really yukking it up. The Food: We ordered a Seafood Cobb Salad ($22) for "Field greens topped with lump crab, shrimp, bacon, bleu cheese crumbles, tomatoes and fresh corn served with your choice of dressing". It had a few shreds of crab and zero shrimp. House Salad with Added Chicken ($11 +$8). The chicken was fantastic. Tender, juicy and perfect. Iced Tea ($3.99) served in the biggest glass I've ever seen. It actually was a beer pitcher. Oreo Cheesecake ($7) -Yummy but one of the smallest slices I've ever seen. Conclusion -OK for Monday, pass on the other six days. read more

Friday Lunch; 2 young kiddos. Very quiet. Let's start with the good: vibes and ambiance for outdoors seating is top notch. Views are great and the playground is a lovely thing for parents on 'vacation' (iykyk). Service on point. Alright, now the bad: the food. Gosh, just go anywhere else. 1. Kids' mac and cheese lunch, applesauce (1 out of 5 stars): $10 This is half of a $0.60 box mac and cheese made exactly in accordance with box instructions and a $0.20 applesauce cup. Thanks for taking the lid off for us! 2. Fish and chips: $23 Fish (1/5 stars) - Resilience is a skill we hardly develop these days. This fish has it FOR DAYS. A tiny 3 oz~ piece of springy tasteless flesh. Oddly, it has the appearance of being well cooked and seasoned, but there is nothing to it. Seriously disappointing. Usually you don't get enough tartar sauce with your fish and chips; here, it's about twice what you'd need for this enlarged fish nugget. A sad experience all around. Chips (aka waffle fries, 3/5 stars) - Quite well cooked, though under seasoned. Seriously, there is no flavor to this stuff. And the portion sizes here are just wayyyy too small for what you pay and especially for these, the best thing in the entire meal-- maybe I had ten fries? 3/5 stars is accurate. Coleslaw (2/5 stars) - tiny cup, tastes more like the idea of coleslaw than actual coleslaw. I could actually eat three of these in one sitting if it wouldn't cost me $70. 3. 1lb steamed shrimp: $31 Shrimp (2/5 stars) - If you find yourself in Warrenton, VA on a Sunday afternoon, you absolutely MUST go to Northside 28 for their $5 Chesapeake bloody mary. The shrimp it comes with puts these Ropewalk steamed shrimp to shame, plus you'll get about a gallon of bloody mary. Now THAT is embarrassing! No sides, no drink, just a small metal bucket of unseasoned shrimp. Left with hunger and regret. Don't fall for it. read more
