Booking was very quick and easy and we were met by the owner on arrival and made to feel very welcome. The cottage was very clean and comfortable and cosy, and had everything we needed and there was ample parking outside. The shared garden was spacious and the setting peaceful. Nearby Portreath is only 5 minutes in the car and has a good beach, as does Porthtowan further along the coast. It is possible to walk to Portreath but it is about 20 minutes along a busy road so not suited to younger children. We paid a visit to the nearby pub, only a walk down the hill from the farm and found it pleasant enough. The only thing I would put on my "wishlist" is a shower, but for a weekend the smallish bath was adequate and there was lots of hot water! We would return here, especially for a short stay.

The site was really nice, hard to locate though through thin winding roads. Had a great time, there were leaflets and booklets about things to do in the area in the cottages and in the reception. The only bad thing with the site was the size of the pool. It was called a plunge pool, and about the size of a generous jaccuzi. It was also not very deep, but great for children

Pendra Loweth is a great base for exploring Cornwall. Most things within an hour's drive, plenty to do much closer. Would recommend the Maritime Museum in Falmouth for a rainy day option, and Mylor Boat Hire for a nautical day out. Closest beaches are Maenporth (sand) and Swanpool (pebbles), both with great cafes, small boat hire and parking for £2 a day.

Way back in 1774, Tregenna was built as a 12-bedroom private home for a wealthy Cornishman with a love for the sea. Samuel Stephens Esquire commissioned the build of the house from local granite, and the four castellated turrets and original glazed skylight with the family coat of arms can still be seen today. The house remained in the family until it was sold by their final heir, John Stephens, to a family of local bankers, the Bolithos, in 1871. The Bolithos acquired the house at the same time that Brunel was building the Great Western Railway from London to Penzance to serve the West of England. It was then fashionable for all the great railway companies to establish destination hotels by the sea. GWR discovered Tregenna Castle with its spectacular views overlooking St Ives Bay and decided to lease it from the Bolitho's in 1878, before purchasing it in 1895. With the help of local craftsmen, the original house was extended to include new function rooms, a restaurant, adjoining kitchens, and a hallway leading to the main reception area. Thanks to the exceptional quality of the work, and our show-stopping location, it wasn't long before Tregenna became the 'Jewel in the Crown' of the GWR hotels.

We had received notification that money would be refunded but that wasn't necessary as the village re-opened on out date. Albeit without swimming pool and entertainment. This didn't really bother us as, at our age, we are passed it. On the day we were given a booking in time of 7.00 pm. Registration took ages but, again, blame the coronavirus. OK, down to what the village offered during this pandemic. The shop was open, on time every morning for those things that had been forgotten and, of course, a newspaper. The bar was open during the day and evening. Those guys stuck strictly to the corona guidelines. It must have been difficult but they carried it through with a smile and a joke. One young lady gave us the easiest way to get into St Ives (parking is hopeless). Use the Park and ride train. Thank you for that tip. As I have said they are the friendliest bunch of guys and gals. Even wished us a safe journey home. They deserve five stars. Now down to the accommodation. As I said we have used the National Newspaper breaks many times using Hoseasons, Haven and Parkdean. This is the first time we have used John Fowler and it will be the last. I can only say that the 'cabin' was shabby. Clean and sanitised inside but cobwebs everywhere on the outside. Needed a good hosedown. Tiny TV on a table. Not that we watch much TV when away but if a family had children and the weather was bad they would'nt be too happy. New microwave, oven, cutlery and utensils. Hob was so old and difficult to cook by as it was either hot or cold. Rusty fridge. Seating cracked and smelly, Table seating dangerously rickety. Shower was more than adequate. So, John Fowler you get one star. Thank your staff for making it two. They were the crowning glory to a crappy three nights.

Then, after booking the Chelsea House, I found it in a tourism book. It was one of two places listed in Falmouth (in that book). I took that as a good sign. The book said that every room had a view of the water. Well, that's not actually true. There is one room that doesn't have a view of the ocean, and that's the Shell Room, namely, my room. But that's ok! Even though we overlooked the back yard (and the neighbor's dumpster), Chelsea House was worthwhile. There were a few weird aspects to the place and a few down sides. Our room was tiny. Super duper tiny. And it was clearly the last one to be remodeled (As in, the other rooms looked much nicer). The tea kettle was rusty (I used it anyway). You order your breakfast the night before. And if you're not down at 8, you're not going to be eating breakfast. I really appreciated that because it meant I was forced to start my day earlier. I definitely got to squeeze more in that way. But, they are a street away from the water and a short block from the beach. They are incredibly close to the bus/train station. So close that when we left, we walked our very heavy luggage to the train station. They are also only a short walk to the center of town, so it's easy to shop and go to dinner, etc. They were very nice. And it was very affordable, considering it was the official start of the season, and most places were booked. I guess with the tiny room with no view (and the weak dollar), it was one time you wouldn't mind paying for what you get!

Plenty of room for two of us, a nice bathroom and plenty of pillows! The hotel is a 1 minute walk from the beach and about 6 minutes from the town centre and Gylly Beach Cafe. Everything about the place and the people who run it was superb! The owners are friendly, charming people who go out of their way to make you feel welcome, comfortable and really at home and the accommodation was first class for an extremely reasonable price. The house is set within it's own secluded landscaped grounds with extensive woodland, a small lake and a fabulous leisure complex which includes a heated indoor swimming pool, hot tub, tennis court, table tennis and a limited range of fitness equipment. We'll certainly be going back there - a truly fabulous, enjoyable and great value stay in lovely surroundings!
