Old school bar or pub feel and the staff was really friendly. I am not a beer drinker but they had a good selection of single malts as well. The customers seemed friendly as well. Beer selection is excellent!! So many stouts, porters, lambics, and sours to choose from (among other beer but those don't excite me). I would highly recommend popping in here for that alone. Otherwise, the bar is very old looking. Lots of wood and dark/heavy decor. Bar tender was knowledgeable about the beer selection and helped us. read more

Amazing (and I do mean amazing as in they have an entire thick catalog of every beer available) selection of beers in a very distinctive location in downtown Stavanger. We went in on a busy Tuesday and were lucky to find a seat. Lots of people in and out - it's a popular place. I loved the decor. You really felt like you were back in olden times. We were seated next to an ancient brick wall that leant a lot of ambiance to our visit. We went for a basic local beer (mild and good), a sour beer (a real hit with those at the table who like sour beers) and a fruitier beer that had a nice after taste. Prices were great for the unique beers. They don't serve food but it looked like you were allowed to bring your own in with you. Despite all the people not too loud and a very comfortable feel - I'd go in again as I saw at least five must try beers in their immense catalog. read more

This place certainly lives up to its reputation. The interior is lovely, with a regal unique take on the traditional British pub setup. The draft beer range is solid, with a nice range of Scandinavian offerings, including numerous from Norway. The bottle list is even more impressive. Numbering into the hundreds, it has a vast diversity of styles from breweries all around the world. The servers were friendly and efficient, and had no issues speaking English. Of course, this being Norway, it isn't an inexpensive experience. Overall, this is probably the best beer destination in Stavanger, and if you are in the area it's a must-visit place. Cardinal is a cool historic bar in the historic downtown of Stavanger. Inside is a great craft beer bar nestled in a historic old wood paneled environment. The beer list is quite extensive with over a dozen Norwegian craft brews and a literal book of bottled beers from around the world. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the beers and can offer good suggestions based on other beers to match tastes. For beer lovers, it's a must check out spot in the small town. read more

I came here for a drink and it was such a nice bar! It has a great cozy feeling when you first walk in with a lot of tables. The beer list is very extensive and the beers on tap give you plenty more options. The interior seemed to really reflect Stavanger. I would definitely recommend this place to someone looking for a cozy beer bar to have a drink with some friends. read more

After a long day out hiking, I came here with a friend to take a load off and have a few drinks. In the middle of the afternoon, it wasn't all that crowded, so grabbing a seat at the bar was pretty easy. We didn't end up eating anything, instead choosing to focus on imbibing our libations instead. Like a lot of other spots in Norway, the beer was pretty pricey, but the selection - on tap and in bottles/cans - is quite impressive and lengthy. I ended up sampling heavier Norwegian beers, in particular enjoying the beers that 7 Fjell was putting out (their Ulriken double IPA, which has pretty noticeably fruit finish, was a favorite of mine). The bartender, although busy tending to other customers, was kind enough to spend some time talking to us about the state of the beer industry in Norway, about the growing craft scene, and why there is that godawful rule that prevents you from taking anything over 4.7% ABV home with you. In all, this is a nice, relatively centralized location in the older part of town that is strewn with cobbelstone roads to stop for a drink. It has a nice, homey feel, but the drink menu is updated and quite modern and forward-looking. Cardinal probably had the most extensive beer menu I encountered in Norway, and if you are looking to knock a couple crafts back somewhere in Stavanger, this is the place to come. read more

A local recommended this place, saying that it's one of the spots she likes to go with her friends. Taking her up on the suggestion, my friends and I went to check it out, and can see why it's a popular joint. The place was packed, and it was only 7:30 pm! But it's a large establishment, so while there were a lot of people, it wasn't overwhelming. We found a table upstairs, and got drinks from the bar. I tried a local beer called White Dog that I really liked, and my friends all tried different beers that were recommended by the bartender. The crowd was mostly young professionals, it seemed. A visit to the Cardinal is a must for me when staying in Stavanger. It is always busy whatever day of the week or time of year. There is a wonderful atmosphere in the Cardinal and I always feel like I have come home when I go there. They have a great draft selection and a mighty bottle list with beers from all corners of the globe. They currently have a chilli chocolate stout on draft which was developed in collaboration with a local brewery - I would highly recommend trying it! read more

One of the best beer bars in the world I've been to. The encyclopedia of beer is ever changing as well as what's on tap. Always a good and wide selection. It is expensive, but it's Norway so that goes with the territory. I had a couple of Imperial Stouts and Barley Wines on this visit and decided to splurge and have the Lervig 2017 Barleywine. It was one of the best glasses of beer I've ever had (and also the most expensive). I regret nothing and will come back to The Cardinal when I'm in Stavanger again. read more

Visited here in June 2012 and wow, what energy at this place! Lively and energetic yet well-tempered crowd with cool bartenders and a massive selection. I was particularly happy to find they had several black stouts (I had Konrad's). read more

Very nice place if you can get a seat in there. Loads of beers, but they seem to keep a high brow approach to it. You can get strange craft beers from Austria, but they will smirk at you if you ask them for a Pabst Blue Ribbon. Still, tasty beers and relaxed place. This is the number one beer place In Stavanger! This is were you will find all the internationals working the regions migthy petrol industry. They have over 600 kinds of beer. 250+ on tap. It is simply amazing. My favourite thing is to start with a couple of beers, then eat at Micheldownlie.no and then continue at Cardinalen if you fance a proper nigth out eith all that ensues. read more
