I have worked with many different charitable groups and the Future Possibilities program is one of the most organized and the most rewarding. The individuals running the program are wonderful, positive, and caring people. They love what they do and it shows. Kids that attend schools in under-serviced areas are elected into the program by teachers. Usually the kids are shy and need some extra encouragement that they may or may not be receiving elsewhere. From October to April, you work with your kid through a curriculum over the phone and attend activity days held every few months. The curriculum is to help guide your kid through a goal/project. You are a mentor (like you would have at work), but you are still connecting with a child... you are a kid coach. This program benefits the kids but also the coaches. You learn how to actively listen. A lot of the lessons learned can be applied to everyday working life. It's a great program, but it's not for everyone. You are responsible for a kid and you must be available to talk to them each week for 30 minutes for 6 months. I'm really glad I had an opportunity to participate in the program. I encourage anyone who thinks that they would be a great coach to sign-up!

They take things like doors, cabinets, and light fixtures. They will will sell your old goods and the proceeds go directly to Habitat for Humanity. They also get a lot of brand new donations, typically from manufacturers (for example, when they make a product different from what the customer ordered). Habitat for Humanity is a great cause -- they build houses for low income families using primarily volunteer labour. What I like best about the charity is that there are no freebies. The family owns the home, but has to pay for it (with money, and labour building houses for other people). If you're on your way over to Home Depot, it's worth a stop in here to see if you can get what you need on the cheap and help a needy family out at the same time.
