When a friend asked me to pick up a bouquet for date, I thought it was a good chance to check it out. Located in a strip mall just past Carling and Woodroffe this place can be hard to get to if you're heading east on Carling. It's locates in the same plaza as M&Ms and the currency exchange. One plus was that they were open till 6 on a Saturday. When I walked in the place was empty and there were two staff working in the back workroom. The gentleman who greeted me was really kind and helpful. I told him my budget and that the lady receiving them loves purple. He produced a beautiful arrangement in about ten minutes which was great. The total, however, was over my budget (only by $5...but still!), which was a bit irritating. So why only three stars? This place is a bit of a dump. It's the only florist I've ever been in that didn't smell like fresh flowers and that was pretty dull. That being said, it was 5 p.m. on a weekend so maybe they had some things packed away. I'll stop by another time to check it out. They do sell snacks as well and drinks which might be nice if you have to wait long for an arrangement.

The Long Version: I had to make specific plans to visit this store even though it's in my neighbourhood and I walk by it all the time because they are only open Tuesday to Saturday 10am-4pm. So they open after I'm at work and close before I finish and they're close to my home, but not my workplace, so I can only go on Saturdays. Hey, if they can make that work for them (and they do because they have been in business for well over a decade, maybe even more than two decades, as they've been there ever since I moved to the neighborhood), good on them. I would love to work limited hours too, lol. Anyway, I finally made it in to browse the shop. I wasn't looking for anything in particular, but poking around for anything interesting that would catch my eye. Admittedly, I have limited space for plants and am at the point in my collection where I'm only looking for small unusual looking plants (think mesembs). I did not find any but enjoyed looking around. They have pretty plants that looked to be in good shape. Nothing too exotic or unusual but a good selection nonetheless. Staff were busy tending to other customers so I did not interact with them, which is fine by me, as I prefer to browse on my own anyway. The store is very cozy and nicely laid out. Prices are higher than greenhouses/garden centres but that's to be expected, since it's a small boutique in Westboro, lol. Prices are comparable to other small plant stores in the city. I am a fan of Scrim's Florist. They have lovely bouquets for mother's day and valentine's…read moreday--absolutely beautiful. But what keeps me going back is the house plants. Every plant I've gotten at Scrim's has been beautiful and done really well. I wouldn't really say I have a green thumb, nor am I death to all houseplants--and the staff at Scrim's has always been really knowledgeable and helped me choose plants that are not toxic for my plant-chewing cat and that are pretty easy for me to care for (and therefore won't die on me). The plants have always been healthy and survived the move from the flower shop to my apartment--I have one plant that has doubled in height and is just doing beautifully. I've picked up housewarming gifts here as well, the staff are always really prompt and happy to help. Gold stars all around. Also, they do a great job wrapping up the plants for you. I picked one up in winter one time and she wrapped it a few layers to protect it from the wind and put a cute little ribbon and sticker on it--simple and pretty.

Bang On is a shop that I would have loved about four years ago, but I'm getting a bit tired of this…read more70s-90s ironic nostalgia, especially the inauthentic kind. For $30 you can get a shirt pounded with your choice of design. You can choose between logos from Nintendo, children's programming, rock icons, porn covers, etc. You can also put transfers on trucker hats, dresses or jackets. If I was ever going to wear something like this again, I'd prefer to find it in a vintage store. It's snobby to think the real deal makes a difference, but there's something phony about basically mass-producing these shirts with logos and making people think they're unique because they can choose which American Apparelesque garment they put a sticker on. I just don't think the price is worth it, especially if it's just a gag gift. They also have some 80s and 90s sunglasses.
