This is by far the best selection of magazines in Ottawa that I have come across. It's been an institution in the city for what seems like forever but they're still around because if you're looking for something, no matter how obscure, they seem to have it. The magazines are arranged by category and they cover everything from the home to computing, finance, fashion, celebs and pets and seem to come from every part of the globe. They also have all the major newspapers including a cross section of not so top-of-mind Canadian cities like North Bay. I was there looking for a particular title and although they didn't have it in stock they were going to be ordering it and the salesperson told me the exact day in which I would be able to find it in store which was quite impressive. This place reminds me of a lot of magazine shops around where I grew up. They have a fantastic selection of magazines and the staff has always been super friendly and helpful when I'm looking for the odd magazine. I was surprised they didn't have a large cooler of drinks but they do have a selection of cigars and cigarettes. The window is updated regularly and they do catch my eye luring me to walk in and browse! It's a great part of Elgin St and I wish more neighbourhoods in Ottawa had a store like this. Mags & Fags is seriously a unique gem in capital city! In addition to their great newspaper and magazine selection, they have an incredible range of fun and random stuff to buy. Ranging from hilarious cards, mugs, cool journals/notebooks (Pierre Belvedere ones are pretty cool), books, trinkets, gadgets and so much more. They also have some great products if you support cultish things like Star Wars and ninja culture. Mags & Fags has stuff for everyone, so it's great for buying gifts for people or even to give gift certificates to the store as a present. I bought about 5 hilarious and sentimental gifts from here for my sisters birthday and she loved them all (including the book "what's your poo telling you"...not a spelling mistake). Their staff and customers are friendly and and the atmosphere is always chilled out and relaxed. I've never been in there and felt rushed to buy anything and there's never a huge crowd of people. I LOVE Mags & Fags. They have a wide range of magazines to choose from and the store is really well organized. I personally really appreciate the number of feminist magazines they stock here- BUST, Bitch, Herstory, etc. Staff here are very sweet, and always friendly. They will even allow your dog to come peruse the store with you- and probably even offer your pup a treat. In addition to the wide range of magazines they offer, they also have a great number of options for small gift items and unique, greeting cards. Are you tired of the limited selection offered by your local variety store? Do you find that Chapters/Indigo doesn't even carry the magazine that you want? I'm willing to bet you'll find it here. The first time I went I was dumbfounded by the number of titles this place carries. The best part? I mean besides the friendly staff? It is pretty damn easy to find what you want because of how well organized this place is. Obviously, given the name of the store, cigarettes (and I believe cigars) are available. Just like everyone else says, you can also purchase fun-yet-random items such as cards, small games, mugs, notebooks, key chains... This place is great! In addition to the great selection of magazines described by the first reviewer, they have a great selection of greeting cards. They are pricy - $4-$5 each, but they are creative, different, and often times hilarious. I've only lived in Ottawa for about 6 weeks, and I've already bought 5 cards from here. Fantastic selection of mags and an equally excellent selection of fags. In addition to the above, they have a small assortment of humorous items (greeting cards, trinkets, etc). They also carry the Monster Factory stuffed animals. I like giving these little guys to women as gifts because it contributes to a willingness on their part to let me in their pants. Now just a tip, when you name your store Mags and FAGS one can only assume you are referring to tobacco products. Now they DO NOT sell ANY tobacco or tobacco related products.
