The environment is relaxing yet still professional. In fact they even have T.V.s on the ceiling if you want to watch while they are taking care of you! They are honest and up front about all procedures and pricing. They are very affordable compared to a lot of other practices out there that I have been to. Due to travels and wanting to find a new dentist, it was 15 months since my last visit to a dentist. West Des Moines Dental was recommended by a friend. It took a few months to be able to schedule an appointment and with precautions changing daily about the Coronavirus, I wasn't sure I would be able to keep my appointment. I was asked to fill out a brief questionnaire but was able to keep my appointment. Upon meeting Julie, the hygienist, I immediately told her my fears and that I had an unpleasant experience with the last hygienist I visited. Julie was very understanding and extremely gentle; she gave me a stress ball to squeeze and told me to raise my hand if I needed a break. She did a full set of X-rays, using the child size to better fit my small mouth (no jokes please!). The cleaning went much smoother than anticipated and Dr, Allie did a brief exam. I was happy no follow up was needed and scheduled my next appointment before leaving.

The assistant took xrays, which was uncomfortable, but not a new experience for me because I have a shallow mouth. The shocker came when Dr. Edwards looked at the xrays and informed me that I had NINE cavities that needed fillings. I was immediately suspicious, because I had been to my regular dentist in Ames about a year before that and had no concerns. I brushed my teeth and flossed, and I was shocked to hear her say I would need to get them all fixed soon. Luckily for me, my guard was up and I told her I would schedule an appointment later. Honestly, I didn't believe her diagnosis and I wanted another opinion. I ended up returning to my dentist in Ames 6 months later, and what do you know, I have NO cavities. I have two areas that are weakened and that they are watching, but no cavities. Not a single one! It is clear to me that Dr. Edwards is either not very good at her job, or was trying to intentionally grab money from me. I'm unsure of which is worse. Regardless, I will NOT be returning, and am warning everyone I know to avoid this place!

I have even had 1 of the hygienists talk to him infront of me like I wasn't even there. I ended up butting in, and telling him that she was lying about what she was saying. It has to do w/me not using dental floss---she told him that if I would use dental floss I wouldn't of had a mouth full of blood, and I said, that's funny I didn't see any blood on the dental floss that you just used. I have anxiety disorder so they are able to use "gas" to keep me relaxed. My periodontal problems are gone and so are five cavities and now I see him three times a year with very little anxiety to keep my periodontal issues under control. He even worked me in the same day for an emergency. Delta Dental and all forms of Medicare and other insurers are accepted. If you don't have dental insurance no worries, they will write up a payment program. As long as Dr Thies is in business I will always go to him; I can't imagine going to a different dentist.

Darren Jirsa, was the specialist we saw and he was very friendly and explained things in a way that made it easy to weigh pros and cons. Did not recommend any more than what was needed, which was just to leave his teeth alone because the risk would outweigh the reward. Overall fantastic experience, we will be back if any more follow ups are needed in the future!

Dr. West seems like a very practical type of dentist who will work with the patient to come up with the best course of treatment without spending any unnecessary money. I had a particularly bad cavity and after some extensive drilling and filling I am good to go! Overall the visit was as painless as possible.
