This was my first time trying this pizza. A friend of mine at work had a coupon for a free large pizza and told me to give it a try. This location is relatively close to where I live, so I figured why not get a free pizza. We decided to order the cheese sticks as well. It comes with two sauces. I asked for ranch instead, but I think they misheard me and decided to give me both. The cheese sticks were really good. The pizza was also really good. It wasnt too greasy/oily. It had the perfect amount of sauce on it too. We definitely enjoyed the free pizza. Next time we want pizza, we will have to give them another try. read more

This stop #42 on our pizza tour. That's right in the last 3 years we have hit 42 pizza places (there are rules of course). I drove by the other day and we realized we had not been to this place yet. So on my kids half day of school (our district is going face to face) we placed an order. The shop is easy to find. Once we got there it was lunch rush and they had a few people waiting to pick up. Inside was neat and clean. We ordered a small cheese and pepperoni (old fashioned) and Carlo bread. The pizza was some of the best we've had in awhile. Their sauce along with the old fashioned pepperoni was simply the best. The Carlo bread was boring and missing something like garlic. It comes with pizza sauce but ranch would have a better option. Do you know how some places say "under new management" and you expect great things? I'm sad to report that Carlos has gone completely in the toilet with the new management team. I tried calling 8 times just now; 7 times it reached voicemail that said "sorry the mailbox is full". The other time, I said I wanted to place a carry out order, and the kid hung up on me. Since I live close by, and I wanted pizza, I drove there to order the pizza in person. I asked the young lady if the phones were working, And I explained what happened. She had no idea what I was talking about. But, as I placed my order there, I heard the phone ringing and ringing and ringing, and nobody picked it up. Meanwhile in the pandemic, I saw maybe half of the workers wearing masks. Everyone I saw was a teenager. Do any adults work here? I'd like to hope that an adult would've enforced wearing a mask during food prep. Now, about the food. First, the good news. They've added an everything bread, which is basically an everything bagel seasoning on pizza bread. It's excellent. There's also a terrific garlic butter you can get as a side that's delicious. And, the ranch dressing is also very good. This time, I asked for those sauces, and they gave me neither of them. I'd like to say that the pizza is the same as it was before, but it's not. The new management is especially cheap when it comes to cheese. You can get various flavored crust, and they are decent, but I find I have to sprinkle additional mozzarella on once I get home to make it look like a proper pizza. And, they didn't give me the Parmesan crust that I asked for, either. My main regret here is that I started a review when this place was under the previous management, and it was going to be a 4 or 5 star review. There is so much that they did before that is exactly what you want from a neighborhood pizza place. But, not anymore. Now, their only selling point is that they are close to my house. Be going to this location for over 17 years, will not be returning. I placed an order for one pizza and she read it back to me, so correct. Went to pick up and they told me no order was placed, I must of called the wrong Carlo's. Showed them my phone and said the number has been programed in my phone for years, so no. I've been a loyal Carlos S. River patron for over 10 years. There are actually 2 other Carlos Pizzas & at least a dozen other pizza places much closer to where I live but I will always go out of my way for the S. River location. Both the square & round crusts are always fresh & have great texture. Their sauce is the perfect balance of sweet & tangy & they are not stingy with the toppings. Every pizza, every time is awesome & perfect. They don't have inconsistent results like some other places. I haven't had the chicken tenders & potato wedges in years but I used to love them. I generally consider this to be the best of the franchises. Came in the other day and had a few slices! They make 'by the slice pizza' until 2 pm. After that whatever they have is all there is for that day. I was pleasantly surprised that the employee, after taking my money, washed his hands thoroughly before he did anything else! The new management is pretty bad. I have called and get the voice mail is full and I have had someone hang up on me. If you order through their Snappy Eats make sure you get what you ordered. I have noted no mushrooms too many times only to get mushrooms on my pizza. They don't put enough cheese on the pizza and also skimp on the toppings. I ordered my husband an antipasto salad with ranch and he got Italian dressing. They are pulling these orders off a computer so it's not that they misunderstood what someone was ordering. read more

I'm going to preface this review by saying we love their pizza. However, EVERY TIME we order from them, they forget something in our order. I even put reminders in the "notes" section of the website when I order online, but they still forget it. Then, when I call, they act as if I'm putting them out when I say I want what I ordered. It only takes a minute to review an order before its sent out with a delivery person. Now, I'm sitting here waiting for today's forgotten item - 10 to 30 minutes. Their square pizza and Carlo bread are phenomenal. Their round used to be great too, however now it's worse than 7-11 pizza. My parents ordered a large round cheese and pepperoni pizza with butter parm crust. When pizza was delivered pizza was thin as cardboard, looked like pizza was a mess up they were trying to use, hardly any cheese or sauce and no butter parm crust. We rarely complain as we've been going here for almost 10 years but we called and received a credit for a pizza next visit. The next time we order, we redeem the credit for same pizza as previously noted, a large square and a cheese bread. When ordering my mom specifically asked that the round be more enjoyable than the last time ( more cheese and sauce butter parm) and the girl taking orders said "ya of course". After picking up, it was almost as if we received the same screw up as before! No butter parm crust, looked and tasted like cardboard. Carlos of South River definitely ain't what it used to be.... Once upon a time, you could get a great pie at Carlos. Heck, you could get a great chicken & rib dinner too. I would brag to my family and friends about the great pizza joint I had local. Now I dont mention the name because thats all I hear about is people mad that I referred them there and they were so disappointed my pizza recommendations have no credibility anymore :( Unfortunately, something changed the past few years which has forced me to give up on them - and I love pizza - in fact, I get pizza at least once weekly. Im a pizza snob too, no "hot n' ready" for this boy. I need the real thing. Their version of a 'supreme' pizza turned into a cheese pizza with just a hint of what kinds of toppings you should be getting. In other words, they are very very skimpy on toppings now and even after complaining, they still havent changed a thing. The last time I ordered the chicken and potato wedges, I commented that I could've (and should've) just went to Kroger and got a $5 rotisserie chicken and a bag of potato wedeges out of the freezer section. It would've been cheaper and tasted a heck of a lot better!! I cannot comment on any other Carlos, as the one on Shook/Jefferson wont deliver to my house only Carlos of South River will, bummer. read more

Very good pizza. Some of us at work get the lunch special which is 2 decent size pizza slices and a pop for about $4.95. The pizza is always hot, crispy, and smells delicious...ask for the garlic butter to be added because it's sooo good! I've had the square deep dish pizzas (small and large) and they're very crunchy. I like crunchy crusts and only this place and jets fit the bill. The antipasto salad had green and black olives on it which was very cool. A large supreme pizza(like jets super special) is $15.74 plus tax. Very expensive pizza. Small salads are huge! read more
