This guy is over priced and does really sloppy work. He also refuses to admit fault or give a refund. I took in a pair of Suicoke sandals to be resoled. Size 39. Suicoke are a premium brand, sandals were originally $250. Carlo shoe repair has shortened the pair by an inch, as you can see in the pictures. He took a bit off the top and a bit off the bottom and they no longer fit me because one is too small. I took them back in to ask for a refund, and he was extremely rude, told me that I must have 2 pairs of them and brought in the wrong one (I do not) and that my foot grew (it didn't) and that they must have come like that. Before taking these shoes to Carlo, they fit me. After his "repair" they no longer fit me. You do the math. He charged me $90 for this repair. I'm planning to report him to the city and vibram. He's got terrible ethics. read more

Re-soling review. Cobbler: Carlos' Shoe Repair. San Francisco, California Boot: Redwing Iron Ranger. Amber Harness. My Iron Rangers were only about a year old but I had put a lot of miles on them and although the original RW mini-lug sole was still fine, I knew I wanted: softer feel underfoot. Better grip for light hiking. Fully embrace the work boot aesthetic. I have other slimmer profile cap toes and service boots and the bulbous IR toe will never be as sleek With that in mind, I felt that adding a leather midsole and leather heel stack would address some of the more obvious IR deficiencies and add a little more support and improve the foot feel. I went with the honey lug Vibram 100 for the grip. Depending on who you ask, the honey lug may or may not be softer than the black V100. Overall, I was very happy with Carlos' work. The soles look great. He went to the trouble of adding a second midsole layer which only is in the forefoot and tapered away towards the back. He said that he did this to maintain the same level of heel rise as was in the original IR sole. The honey lug V100 is plenty grippy and felt just right. It wasn't tremendously softer than the original RW outsole but enough that it was a tad bit more comfortable as I walked several miles through San Francisco today while running an interminable list of errands. Carlos also cleaned and conditioned the boots. I didn't ask what he used but it did darken somewhat. I highly recommend supporting your local cobbler! read more

My knee-high boots were completely ruined- the suede looked old and shabby, the soles had uneven wear (google it, it uneven wear looks like permanent damage). I was ready to get rid of my favorite boots but decided to see if they could be fixed. Before I picked them up, I was skeptical. When I saw the boots, my jaw dropped behind my face mask. They looked brand NEW again. The soles took some work but the result is amazing. I don't have any "before" photos (I wish I did) but the "after" images speak volumes. These boots are 7-8 years old! Carlos absolutely destroyed my shoes and he was SO RUDE when I asked for my money back since I wasn't happy with how they turned out. When I went to pick up my shoes, Carlos returned them and each shoe was two different colors. I'd asked for my heels to be fixed on my booties and did not ask for a color alteration (if that's even a thing..) I am so upset that my shoes now look horrendous. And he only gave me half my money back. I felt taken advantage of and will literally NEVER give them another penny of my money and will never recommend anyone I know to go there. They did an awful job and were awfully rude when I wasn't happy with the results. No effort was made to try and fix what I didn't like. read more

Suede boots ruined! Just picked up suede boots and they ruined the richness of the suede by shampooing the suede. Looks awful. They're abrupt with customer service and push you to get extra services when not needed. Went in just to repair heels and they said they would clean the boots. Never said they would shampoo them, so when I picked them up today, they looked pretty washed up. Don't buy into their extras. You'll be disappointed and have a pair of beloved shoes ruined. read more

Over the last 20+ years I've taken shoes to many different cobblers. (I have one leg shorter than the other and need my shoes adjusted to account for it.) Carlos is the best cobbler I've ever gone to and even though his shop is out of my way, I always make the trek versus taking my shoes elsewhere. I've brought 4 pairs of shoes to Carlos to be resoled in the last 2 weeks. I'm sure there are places that would do it cheaper, but in my eyes you can't put a price on quality work. I wish I had taken a picture but I had a pair of shoes where the soul was worn down so far they looked like I took an electric sander to the heel at a 45 degree angle. This was no problem for Carlos though - they now look brand new. If you're looking to have nice shoes repaired, resoled, or just polished- bring them to Carlos. He's absolutely the best. read more

He even demonstrated what a few different options would look like and took the time to educate me about what he was going to do before he actually did it. This made me feel great about the decision. This place is alright at best. Definitely not coming back, got a pair of shoes repaired, made some long pitch about Italian vs. German soles, the latter being better quality and what he recommended and would do and well worth the premium price. It soles say "Italy" on them, not sure if this was an extreme typo or what, but they cost German prices. Fast forward one month later, they're starting to fall apart. These German soles that say Italy on them are pretty terrible quality and for the $125 I paid for the repair should've lasted longer. Mixed thoughts on German / Italy soles but clear in this place being very mediocre at best. Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk. read more

I paid Carlos $50 on Friday to revive two beloved pairs of shoes. The first, black Kate Kanzier t-strap heels (the comfiest I own). The second, red cowboy boots I've been running into the ground for the past eight (8!) years. Monday I picked up both pairs and found them in mint condition and basically looking brand new again. Carlos shined up my cowboy boots and replaced the heels. He also replaced the worn down heel tips on my strappy shoes. I'm so excited to be able to wear my favorite shoes again! read more

I was about to use Carlos, but when I went for a quote, I was quoted an exorbitant, totally made up amount. After reading some of the other reviews stating the price gouging and unethical behavior, I thought I'd review as well. I went into Carlos Shoe Repair with nice(ish) leather boots, with leather soles. I told him I just wanted to replace with rubber so that 1. it would be cheaper and 2. I could have some grip while walking. I also asked for him to replace one zipper that had ripped a little. He quoted me $130 for these services! I had gotten a sole replaced in the past for $50, and THAT was already expensive in my experience. I then asked him to split out the pricing of the zipper replacement separately from the rubber sole. He obviously pulled a number out of thin air and said it was $35, and that the sole was $95. Personally, that is way more than I want to pay to resole old shoes. If you want to come here, either bring crappy shoes and dress poorly, or expect to be quoted an insane amount for any type of service. read more

Literally writing this as I leave Carlos's as I am so impressed with his service. I've been several times to get boots resoled, stretched, waterproofed and cleaned, you name it. Carlos always does a great job but this time I was BLOWN AWAY by the before and after. I have a pair of pink satin sock booties that I foolishly wore on New Years that got pretty destroyed. It was several weeks before I could take them in and had no hope they'd return to the former glory but ALAS low and behold they look as good as new! All the stains are gone and the satin even has the same luster as before. He also waterproofed them and added a protective layer to the sole for scuffing. If you have a nice shoe collection like myself that you'll like to see last into the future I would highly recommend Carlos! read more

Carlos gets two big thumbs up from me. I called him up last week to find out how much it would cost to put a rubber sole protector on my new Wolverine Addison's so I could maintain their freshitudinal look as long as possible. Carlos told me it'd be $28 and he could do it in half an hour? "Say what?!?" I said...a half hour is just absurd. So I jet down there after work and sure enough the man hooked me up with a new sole protector in less than thirty mins. I actually still had 5 mins left on my meter because he was faster than I thought he would be. How often does that happen? BTW...I like the new parking meters that accept credit cards, however, I think it's ridiculous how much it costs to park on the street these days. EFF YOU DPT!!! read more

I had a giant black leather purse fixed and refurbished here. It's a bag I've loved to death and it had two side zippers plus the top main zipper all coming apart. For $80 they fixed all the zippers and refinished the leather with a sealer so I wouldn't end up with black rubbing off on my clothes. When I picked up my bag it had been transformed back to pristine condition! I am super happy with the results! It was exactly what we discussed and was ready on time (4 days). I paid $85 to resole a pair of soft leather boots. You pay in advance, by the way. Later on a I spoke to a friend who got his shoes resoled there before me for $65! He said the first time he actually went there, it was a higher price for the same type of casual work shoes (for everyday office wear). This store doesn't have a pricing sheet and probably determines the priced based on your shoes' brand and/or how nice you're dressed. The price you have to play seems to be completely arbitrary. I guess it is expensive rent after all. That's a lot of shoe repairs. read more

I brought in a pair of boots in last week to get re-soled. I didn't need/ask to have them rushed but still had my boots back the next day. They fixed my boots, better than I thought was possible. I had completely worn and burned heels (motorcycle exhaust burns). And they repaired them like new. I felt the price was fair enough for SF (though I did not shop around). The service was good, and the dude working (Carlos?) seemed friendly enough. I will come back next time I'm in need of repair. read more
