I visited Carlyn's Barber Shop solely based on the Yelp reviews. I'm glad I did! I've had a pretty busy schedule lately, and just simply haven't had time for a haircut. I felt like I had hippie hair, so I had to do something! Carlyn runs a one-chair shop in a nice little courtyard right off Mill St. I was lucky. When I arrived, there wasn't a wait (apparently there usually is). I'm really happy with the cut she gave me, and some might consider me "picky" when it comes to my hair. If I lived here, I'd be a regular. As it is, I'll have to visit next time I'm in town. read more

Carlyn is a great barber who makes sure to do what she's doing right. She takes the time to listen to what you want and solicits feedback along the way, too. After a few visits, she began to learn my hair and how to best get it to do what I wanted and I haven't had to spend quite as long in the chair. I'm typically in and out in under 30 minutes, even of there are one or two customers ahead of me. I have been coming to Carlyn's for a couple months now, and I am soooo glad I stumbled on her Barber Shop. She really takes the time to make sure you are getting the haircut you want, and having a consistent barber is the cherry on top. She gets to know what you like, and delivers great cuts every time. Always has fun stories and is a great conversationalist if you are. If you're more a quiet type she doesn't try to force a conversation so never awkward. Can't give more praise. Let me preface this review by stating that I do no like getting my hair cut. Trips to the barber have always been like trips to the dentist in that I don't really want to go, since I'm not going to like what happens in the short term, but I recognize that I should go, because it's in my long term best interest to do so. Now that being said I actually enjoyed my experience at Carlyn's. Her one chair shop was quiet, she struck just the right balance between no-nonsense hair cutting silence and frivolous banter, and most importantly she was able to make some sense out of my vague attempt to describe what I wanted done with my hair, and give me a haircut that I liked instead of merely tolerated. as of today 17/mar she's still open--so far no covid-19 barber shut downs. she took me in in spite of being an hour to close, reminded me it's cash only ($20) and pointed me towards an atm, and got me out in under 50 min. i'm horrible at talking about hair with every barber so i normally bring 3+ pictures (of, to their bane, different cuts. sorry!) & say "if you can trim me anything like any of these i'll be happy as a clam" all the while letting them know they could accidentally have my head and i'd still be relaxed. she was patient, tolerant, and helped my indecisive self settle on something. made nice conversation and wasn't difficult to talk to. very refreshing, would love to come by in the future. read more

Just got out of court on 6th street and after getting some good news (Insert Sarcastic Voice Now) I had some lunch and needed my wig trimmed. I thought of going to another barbershop but I came across this Kool Kats shop. You walk in and you feel like you are in a waiting room for a spa. Very tranquil and quaint. Carlyn is fantastic at cutting hair. She has a hole in the wall shop (literally). She is the only barber of her shop and it makes for a great experience getting your hair cut. The prices are good and a fantastic find. Because she is the only person there, doesn't take appointments, and is good at her job, the more obscure time you can go get your hair cut, the better chance there is no wait. Also, if you want to park for free, use the complex behind her building in the garage. Press to pay hourly and then you will only be there for 1 hour. Finally...after living here for two years...I have found my barber. I have been to several places (even reviewed one here previously) but Carlyn's is the best. She doesn't do a neck shave but I don't care about that anymore. She cuts my hair exactly like I ask. It costs $18 at the time of this review and I giver her $5 for a tip.
