Between saving the trip and avoiding the hassle of a Maryland inspection, it was an easy call. I had my financing lined up before I ever walked in. I arrived around 4:45pm on a Tuesday, test drove two cars, purchased the first one, and was out the door before 7pm. That level of efficiency is rare when buying a car and was genuinely impressive. I ended up purchasing a Honda Pilot. One of the biggest positives is CarMax's inspection process and return policy. Having what is essentially a 10-day test drive took a lot of pressure off. I still brought the car to my own mechanic during that window, and it received a clean bill of health. This is the third car I've purchased through CarMax, and the experience has been consistently solid. No pressure, no games, and no wasted time. CarMax is knowingly selling a car with collision and frame damage. VIN: WA1CWBF1XND015204 This car was purchased through CarMax Ellicott City and brought to the manufacturer's dealer (Audi) service center which identified that the vehicle was previously in a collision and had frame work done. The vehicle's frame was painted over, fasteners were replaced with non-OEM/manufacturer parts, and the entire wiring and fluid assembly was not put together correctly. During the return process, it was clear they wanted to process it as a return rather than a buyback so they could hide the fact it was frame damage. They also stated it would go to auction rather than for sale again, as they do with vehicles with frame damage. Instead, it's being sold to the next unwitting customer. Formal complaints are also being sent to the MD attorney general and MD MVA. In the meantime, avoid this VIN and dealership. read more

I have called CarMax on December 21 because I discovered I was never given the key for my lug nut locks. I had a flat tire and couldn't change the tire. I was told I would be called back within 24 hours, but wasn't. I called again on the 22nd and 23rd. On the 23rd I did get a call back, but only to be told to expect another call. I never got it. I called again on the 25th and 26th, yesterday (the 28th) I finally had my car towed to a garage for them to cut off the lug nut locks. Rinky, in the business office, needs to be trained in how to work with people. Our purchase was going smoothly thanks to our associate, Michelle. However, things came to a halt when Rinky got involved. We paid a portion of the cost on a debit card. Rinky claimed that it did not go through (although we could show her on our app that the money had been taken from the bank and sent to Carmax). She eventually made a phone call, and came over and said it would take 10 minutes for someone in IT to call her back and confirm the payment. It was TWO HOURS before she got things sorted out and we were on our way. She never apologized for the delay, and she never demonstrated any urgency in getting the problem fixed. We had to ask her to follow up with another call. We had to ask her to check with the manager to see if there was a workaround. RInky demonstrated that she could not care any less about wasting our time. Rinky has a pleasant smile and a calm demeanor, but she needs to learn empathy and how to work on behalf of the customer when there is a problem due to a Carmax snag in the process. read more

Buyer Beware: Had dream 2021 RST CHEVY SUBURBAN transferred. Windshield was broken in transit. CarMax of Ellicott city replaced the factory windshield wi a Safelite windshield and the price remained. The rims were totally torn up and the dealer would not lower the price (it was not indicated in the pictures), paint was chipping a lot on the trunk of the vehicle near the bow tie. The sales lady was rude when I kept asking about the tire pressure light for a truck that they said was ready for me. My check was already cut from the credit union. I asked to speak w manager. Very littler follow up!and follow thru. AND after 2 weeks the truck was still dirty had the previous owners belongings and trash in it. SUBPAR. Worst experience. BRANDYWINE and Laurel was a much better experience and I live in EC. Buying a $55k car and gettting McDonald's service. Ridiculous. The rims are $2600 and they painted some polish over them. I signed some paperwork and the sale of the vehicle was completed. This all only took a few hours of time. I could not be more pleased with the experience of selling a used vehicle here. I've now made four attempts to get a service appointment by phone. Now, after only a couple of minutes, you get dumped off by the robot telling you that service is unavailable and to leave a message. Well... Went to CarMax Ellicott City (with the dudes jumping up and down with billlboards at the entrance). I like the psychological trick of making you stand up while filling paper work while the CarMax clerk is sitting behind a desk (no seat is offered to customers selling their car until they are asked to wait for someone to get back to them...). I waited an hour and was informed in a very theatrical way (" Oh, no one gave you the new estimate, sorry about that... " , and the rep very slowly lifTs up a sheet of paper uncovering the document with the new offer...). They could only offer me $12,000 because the vehicle had been in several accidents, none of which could affect the quality of the car. I left immediately and went to Toyota Catonsville. A very professional representative handled the purchase and offered me the $22,600. Before you go to CarMax and get skinned, try your car dealership. I purchased a used Volvo from CarMax Ellicott City, Md. 17k for a 2015 with 9k miles. When I test drove the car, I specifically asked the man about the battery and tires. He assured me that they check for dry rot and replace the batteries if needed. WELL! 3 months go by and it's colder than a witches... In Baltimore. My battery, dead. So I call since it still should be under warranty or covered by the extended warranty I purchased. "Batteries are not covered". $150 later I have a new battery. Then my tire blows from the nitrogen in the tires expanding and deflating from the cold. Goodyear tells me I have dry rotted tires. $900 later, new tires. Do not trust these people. Sometimes a deal is just too good to be true. And in my case, dangerous. If I had been on 95 driving when the tire blew, I may be dead. This was by far the absolute worst car buying experience that I have ever had. I went to carmax in Elliott City on 7/13/22 to purchase a Nissan Murano. Since I did all of the financing prior to arriving, I was supposed to just go, sign the paperwork and leave with my new car. I was there for 2 1/2 hours . 21 hours after purchasing the car, the service engine light came on. I called the service department and the lady I spoke to told me to bring it in and they would turn it off. I told her that wasn't good enough, I needed to know why the light came on. Her response was that it probably just needed an oil change. I have owned a lot of cars in my life and the service engine light never came on because I needed an oil change. I called and spoke with the sales manager and told him I wanted to return the car. He said he would set me up with a service appointment, give me a rental car and then we could take it from there. I asked why I had to make a service appointment and he replied with "because you have to take care of the mechanical issues first". I had to remind him that their return policy is 30 days no questions asked. He set me up with a 4pm appointment to do the return paperwork on 7/18/22. 2nd day of having the car, the battery light and ABS light came on and then the car stopped driving. I called the service department again and told them they needed to come pick it up. Let them know that both keys were in the cup holder. After work I called the sales manager and asked since they already had possession of the car if I could just come in this evening and do the return paperwork. I show up with all of the paperwork from the sale and waited while the training manager tried to figure out how to do the return. He finally came to me and said they couldn't locate the keys and asked if I could call the tow company I used to find out where they were. I had to explain to him that their service department is the one who towed it. I walked over to the manager that was training him to find out how long this process was going to take. He said they couldn't do anything until the keys were found. So here I am, an hour later waiting for them to figure out where their service department put the keys to the car. They finally locate the keys. Had to wait while the trainee went outside to make sure the keys worked. He was gone 15 minutes. Had to wait another 15 minutes for the paperwork to be printed so I could sign them. I never leave negative reviews for a company. Everyone is struggling. Carmax sold me a lemon and made me jump through hoops to return it. They still owe me the $2500 deposit I put down on the car. They said they will mail a check in 7-10 days. Be very careful about purchasing your car from here. Make sure you check it out real good. Go directly to the dealership to purchase a used car. And don't let them make you jump through hoops if there is a problem. read more

My daughters mother, and I'm a father of a hard working child who went to purchase a car with mom this weekend of September 10th,, my daughter shared with me her experience. I wanted to return with her to see if we would get the same experience and have this clown dude talk to me a man in the same way. Manager of sales, weekend big boy, Bobby . He Accused my daughter of theft and threaten to file a police report if she didn't return the car. Yes, she had gone over the 20 minute timeframe for test driving they had gotten caught in rain weather and had to reroute back to the dealership she told him she was on route back over the phone. The sales dude continue to talk to her in a disrespectful manner when she pulled up and walked in, all the clowns were sitting there waiting for her big boy Bobby told my daughter to return the keys he needed to secure the vehicle, that was never a problem for her to do , then showed her a document stating she would not be allowed to take the car for a 24 hour Test drive which they had spoken to the manager John the day before about the arrangements and the overall sales experience score, which was poor at this location.! My daughter was more than 90% sure we probably were going to purchase the second vehicle. He told my daughter and her mother to their face, You would not be allowed to test drive any more cars. The sales rep I worked with kept me informed from beginning to end of where the car was throughout the transfer process. All told, it took about a week. When I went in for a test drive, there was no pressure from the sales rep to buy; he was relaxed and informative the whole time which is 10 times better than other experiences I've had from dealerships. We also had a trade-in vehicle which was appraised while we test drove so no additional time wasted. Appraisal was fair and I got what I expected. I brought my car Kia optima from carmax in October of 2021 and the engine blew a hole in the engine block on June 6 I showed them all my service history and my car is still under the carmax care today is June 26 and still nothing is being done I keep calling and calling to see what is going on no one has any answer. When I purchased my vehicle I was told the plates machines was broken, and given a temp tag, the temp tag expires after 3 months, I go in to get my plates, and am given another temp tag. Wow!!! World Class customer service. From the minute I walked in to the minute I left. Siwan my salesman was great. He knew a lot about the car I was interested in. He never once over sold me. He spent a lot of time getting to know the kind of driver I am and the kind of car I wanted. I have purchased my last three cars from Car Max. This being my forth I would say I am now a loyal Car Max customer. This is a smaller lot for Car Max (I think), but the selection of cars were top notch. When I walked in the ladies upfront let me know they were very busy today, but if I wanted to walk the lot all the cars were unlocked and I could check them all out. They also offered to take my phone number so as soon as a salesperson was free they could locate me. Another thing was as soon as I walked in they immediate approached me. Rather then me having to walk to them. Once again Siwan was amazing. He is a car guy at heart and you can see his enthusiasm for it. Everything was completed via appointment. The cars were cleaner than other used car dealerships but this was still lacking a bit due to COVID and staffing shortages. Also of note, this dealership has less vehicles than the Carmax in Laurel. But, you can request a vehicle be shipped from another Carmax and it's fairly quick. The experience was OK. Not great, not special in any way and I guess when I spend $20,000. I'd like to feel special. The sales woman didn't know enough and was slow to find out info for us. Gave us incorrect information so that when we were signing papers to buy the car, we were surprised at wrong info. It wasn't enough to be a deal breaker but certainly would never work with her again or recommend her. CarMax it's self was also OK. I've had my certified toyota car for 10 days now and have to take it back for service....not happy about this. The car wasn't clean when it was delivered. Windows were smudged and hard to see out of - felt like the cleaning was rushed so that the sales woman could move us on. I purchased a used BMW 2015 X4 back in September of 2019 at this location in Ellicott City Md. The car was transferred from Philly Pa and sent there I was told to be reinspected and clean for me to purchase it. I got there looked at the car and noticed it had a few issues my driver door was peeling I asked if they could replace it, my sales rep said he would put a work order in to get it fixed, I said ok waited for them to contact me and a month went pass and I had to call them ask what was the hold up they put me on the phone with someone who told me to take pictures and send it to them when the parts were ordered they would call me to set up an appointment to fix it. Another 2 weeks went pass they called an NDA said to come on Friday I then took my car sat inn the lobby for 2 hours for a service member to tell me they didn't carry the adhesive to put the part on the door I had to take it to BMW I was upset that I took off work and wasted my time but I said ok and I asked for the part and was told They couldn't give it to me and to tell BMW to order and fix it WHAT!!!! Ok fast forward Now anyone who knows Beamers know you get a oil change every 9/10000 miles 2 weeks later my car says my oil is low I take it back to BMW where they tell me oil is now leaking (1 month 2 weeks) in the car I pay to get the oils changed EARLY and the O ring replaced that was no good another week later I noticed my car had been running strange I took it back to BMW and they did a courtesy check lifted my car and the 2 back tires were dry rotted and bald ($808 for two tires by the way and I live in Pa so they wouldn't have passed inspection. Fast forward yup again and my back brakes were on a level 3 standard BMW is a 14/16 these were almost at my Roaders now not Unless your an idiot no one is slamming on the brakes on a Beamer that much to be replaced in a few months. And I'm not at all saying that they had to put brand new brakes on there or brand new tires it's used but at-least decent, Fast forward and BOOM the fucking radiator is leaking coolant ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! I'm not a mechanic but I'm pretty sure a radiator on a car should last 8-10 years of life if not the whole life of the vehicle it's a 2019 it's a now 5 year old car the previous owner you can took care of it for the most part no accidents etc and if the car was reinspected from Philly then this shouLd of been caught I talk to the manager Brandon and Brenden or Brennan how every you spell it and nothing but disappointment I talked to the corporate office in VA and they too are no better with. Ellicott City said I should of bought the car under 4 thousand miles and they would of replaced it but I was under the impression with my Max car I was supposed to pay a 500 deductible and they only covered major things so I paid out of pocket Corporate tell me they can only pay me back for a oil change because all of these things met their standards WELL YOUR STANDARDS ARE PRETTY LOW IF THATS THE CASE after there's been nothing but issues since I've had the car in this now 90 days. And see my problem with you big corporations is you got your money the bank cut you the check for me to drive it Off your lot and the little stuff that I'm asking for reimbursement is nothing compared to what I paid. My wanted a Beamer for her birthday this year I'll be going to BMW or another dealer I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER CAR FROM THEM AGAIN! Overall a much better experience than the Laurel location in my opinion. It's smaller and more intimate but on the flip side it's also much slower in terms of them having both a smaller sales staff and an even smaller mechanic staff. My purchase should have been really quick but thanks to the backup in the garage I was here for five and a half hours. Not even kidding when I say I was in the waiting area and watched two hours of Family Feud awkwardly with others in my position. Still, way better than Laurel. Just build a larger garage and hire a few more mechanics and they'll be set. Otherwise, great experience. read more

Great car buying experience. Beware of service dept. they are not on same page as sales dept. I was told that certain items on the car would be addressed by service dept.(new wipers, steering, etc). That was not completely true. Service guys are nice enough but be warned --have them take care of all service issues before you agree to buy the car. read more

When I went to the Ellicott City Carmax, I was greeted kindly and got what I consider to be a fair offer on my car. So that's that. But within 10 minutes I knew I wasn't going to be a customer there. The salesman I was introduced to called me a "good girl" multiple times (I'm 31, just old enough to not want to be treated like a kindergartener) and was told that "Volkswagens are retarded" and I shouldn't buy one. Let's just stop right there. I know that people can be overly politically correct about throwing around terms like "retarded." I am in the camp of people who take offense to the word being thrown around as a pejorative. I have family members with developmental disabilities. I don't advertise it; I don't open conversations with it, and I'm not ashamed or embarrassed by the fact. But if you're a big enough jackass to use that word to a complete stranger--mind you, a stranger you want to give you a lot of money--then no, I'm not going to shop at your establishment. There are plenty of other places to take my money. Some people might not care about the use of derogatory terms like that used in casual conversation. I do. In addition to being ignorant and cruel, it's classless and tacky. Also, you're in a business setting! How is that even remotely professional? Answer: it's not. It's no different than using a racial epithet or a slur against someone's sexual orientation. You want to spew that ignorance with your friends? Whatevs. That's your right. To me, that's a dealbreaker. Also, I'm not going to be flattered when you call me a "good girl" 10 times. Went to get an appraisal and hours later, drove home in a new vehicle. Absolutely no pressure to sell or buy. The car I sold, got an appraisal higher than the KBB value. My salesperson Pete was cordial and professional, made things easy and smooth. My only negative is the wait time at the business office to sign the papers. I probably had to wait a good hour and a half, just idly waiting while they were catching up. Other than that, it was a fairly pleasant experience. read more
