Adrean, the salesman who helped me, was very, very good in capturing my requirements for a "new-to-me" used car. He was adept at scanning what was available in the CarMax​ inventory and honing in on a vehicle that met my criteria. Adrean was also very, very good at communicating with me throughout the process. The deal was sealed not only because of the vehicle's low mileage & not-so-bad price​ but definitely because of Adrean's decent, straight-shooting, professional manner. Great job, Adrean. Two negatives having to do with the CarMax business process​: (1) Car Max makes low-ball trade-in offers. Otherwise, they would have benefited from getting my low mileage, garage-kept, all-wheel drive Honda CRV; ( 2) The car I bought came with three key fobs, two of which have to be electronically rekeyed to open the car door. Getting the fobs rekeyed will involve an extra trip to CarMax and at least a couple​ of hours of my time. read more

I've purchased 2 vehicles from the Laurel Carmax with superior experiences and service. This location was disappointing except for the final checkout of paperwork. The car was NOT detailed at time of sale - dirty windows...not vacuumed, etc...and it took forever to get from showroom floor to check out - so how could it not go through quality control in all the time it took to leave the showroom? I completed the automated surveys with my displeasure and NO ONE contacted me to see why the rating was so low or about the details I left on the surveys stating my poor experience. And this was allegedly one of their fleet vehicles that should have been pristine. I would never return to this location. read more

Won't even offer fair bluebook values and now the excuse is the "auctions or the virus". Yet they have the same car listed $11,000 more than median blue book for sale with virtually identical miles and options. This place is a joke!!! I was looking forward to an easy and painless transaction where I could sell my car at a fair price from both parties. Unfortunately, I was disappointed on how extremely low their appraisal was for a 4wd car at a good condition. I purchased this car less than a year ago from a dealership and was surprised to see such a huge drop of price for my car from CarMax rep. I am sorry, I am not willing to loose that much money on a car I have invested on. I have done my research and have taken good care of my vehicle. I bought a Chrysler 200 Limited in March, 2015 from the Ellicott City CarMax. I was extremely impressed and pleased with my car buying experience. The entire staff, from sales to signing, were a pleasure, and by the time I left, I could honestly say I felt like I made a few friends while I was there. Really cool people. I can't say enough about the quality of staff at this location. I could not have imagined a better trip to a car dealership. However, mid June 2015, after only putting a little under 4,000 miles on the car; the brake pads, rotors and calipers all needed to be replaced. The car sounded like a T-Rex was gnawing on my axles. Of course, this isn't covered under the CarMax Max Care warranty. I get that this isn't technically a "new" car, but this was a little disappointing. Spending any money on repairs less then 3 months after purchasing a "new" car is a bit of a let down, especially $500+ . I'd expect this from a Mom & Pop used car dealership, but the reason I went to CarMax was because I "trusted" the brand. After all, isn't this the whole reason behind CaMax's claim to fame? Apparently not. Word of advice: read their warranty and what it covers, then make sure you check everything that isn't covered before you make the purchase, or sign up for the warranty. read more

I couldn't be more pleased with my new Jeep! My Malibu was paid off and as predicted-I had to keep 'shoveling' money into it. So, after thoroughly researching Buick Encores, I went to CarMax to see how much I could sell my car for. The Buick selection was limited but my son-in-law spotted a Jeep and the rest is history! I was prepared to walk away if I felt hassled, but the opposite was true. No high pressure salespeople. Everyone was so laid back and friendly. I highly recommend CarMax to everyone! read more

I recently bought a car from them and this review is only for the car buying experience. We were shown a car and we liked it so we went through with all the paper work. While waiting for them to pull the car up front, the dealer who was working with us comes to notify us that the car we were shown is not the car we filled the paper work for. Clearly we were unhappy and wanted the car we saw. After waiting another 30 mins they tell us that car is on hold for someone else. So we asked about the car we technically filled the paper work for and she tells us that it's exactly the same but with more milage. We took her word because she seemed very sure of herself and after all she is a car sales person. So when they pulled the car out front i realized that it was not like the car we saw at all. It was the base model which didnt have any of the interior features the other one had, and the one we saw was 4 cylinder eco-boost while this was a 6 cylinder and not eco boost. We weren't too happy but we also didnt want to start the process all over since we had already spent over four hours at the dealership due to the number of mistakes our sales rep had made. Overall, this was the worst car buying experience we ever had due to the lack of knowledge and experience their car salesmen have and will not be going back to this dealership. read more

Had a great experience with sales, but the customer service is awful! Beware of "TEE" in customer service. My car was clearly not serviced when I bought it because it now needs to be serviced less than a month and 1k miles later. Tee was beyond rude to me on the phone cutting me off every sentence. She contradicted herself multiple times and then refused to let me speak to anyone else! I will have to call back when she is not around to try get an appt which is beyond ridiculous. There comes a time when you just know in your heart of hearts that the current vehicle that you own needs to be replaced. In my case it was a 2009 Ford F150XTS that has served me extremely well since 2011. I wasn't exactly sure of which vehicle I really wanted, but knew it was going to be a car. After searching a few dealerships, I remembered that a close friend had used CarMax in the past when he wanted to sell his car. After hitting the first customer friendly website for cars that I've come across, I narrowed my search to a Honda Civic. Filled out some info, hit send and received an email back immediately that a rep/associate will be contacting me. About 20 minutes later, Rob called and introduced himself, asked me a few questions that I have not even thought of (what is my current driving habits, work, fun, do I travel often, gas mileage, etc) He said he had a few Hondas on location, but if I was available to come in. I answered, what time are you closing?? Headed up to Sterling CarMax and was immediately impressed with the bldg, front desk, etc. Rob came over and I immediately knew I was good hands. He explained the entire process of what CarMax does, where the inventory comes from, how long they have been there, etc. He asked a few more questions and the narrowed search began. He found one in Woodbridge but it had no image yet and one in Richmond. He said he would get the Woodbridge one to Sterling by the next day, asked what I was going to trade-in, got an unexpected offer for my trade-in and as far as I was concerned ready to purchase. He texted me the next morning to say that the car was on the lot. I headed up only to find that the car was a coupe/2dr which I knew, but was smaller than I thought. Took it for a test drive, but after thinking about it, asked if there were sedans in stock, letting him know that I was determined to drive a new car today. We searched and came across a 2015 Honda Accord, which after test driving was satisfied. Came back in, and looked again at the inventory, came across a 2018 Honda Accord, low miles, all the bells and whistles. I don't think he was ready for that curve ball. Neither was I, but spent more, and confident in the choice. Due to the virtual 'all electronic' items on the car, I opted for the 5yr extended warranty that CarMax offers. He was extremely patient, offering all the options available to me and answered all the questions. Financing portion could NOT have been easier. It was Saturday and there were a TON of people there, but when we started on the paperwork and a few minutes later, had my new car that when I walked in that morning, had no idea I would be driving out!! Could I have gotten the car a little cheaper?? probably, Could I have gotten a little more on my trade-in? Maybe. But for the convenience and ease of the 'one stop shop' the entire experience was fantastic! Definitely recommending CarMax Sterling to anyone looking for a new or used vehicle. My only suggestion would to have your choice narrowed somewhat because there are hundreds and hundreds of cars located there. The sales person Peter was just awesome and we are just very very statisfied with our new car. Of course you get what you pay for! The max care is good to have, a bit pricy and it never covers what you really want but that's everywhere. I didn't buy my car here nor did I sell my trade in to them, but was impressed from start to finish with the service and the man I worked with, Pete. He was so nice, talked to me while my car was being evaluated about all of the things that go in to the evaluation and was excited for me when I was thrilled with the price I received. He explained to me the process, and it was genuinely enjoyable to speak with him. I felt like if I had not already decided on the car I wanted, I would have seriously considered letting CarMax have a chance at getting me the perfect car. The entire process took about an hour from start to finish (15 minute wait, and then about 30-40 minutes for my car evaluation), but it was smooth and painless. CarMax in Columbia is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I was pre-approved for a car and was told to bring all my supporting documents. So I arrived with paystubs, Drivers License and Insurance. After I presented the assistant helping Darryl my paystubs, he than proceeds to take it to the Dealership Manager. I was than asked to provide my Bank Account Statement showing that the money was being deposited into my account. I am a young black girl who is a Software Engineer for the Federal Government. I also own a boutique downtown in Fells Point. I think that the day I went to Carmax I did have on distressed jeans and T-shirt. I feel as if they did not believed that I was a young black girl making that type of money. This happened to me over a year ago but still bothers me to this day. I also ran across 2 other people that said they were racially profiled with prejudice there as well. read more

Love my car! Rene Jones is great! I went to the Carmax in Rockville to find a beautiful 370z, color and trim I wanted, but unfortunately, automatic (who buys sports cars in auto?!). I asked them to check inventory in other branches and they found me a black on black touring edition with 30k miles in Elliott city. I went over, and the car was shining and pulled up front waiting for me to drive. Rene Jones, the sales rep there was very sweet, and patient as I set up insurance and everything over the phone, calling around to several places to get the best rate. I ended up keeping her a bit past closing but she never got irritated and even gave me some pointers on things I did't need for insurance to save me a few bucks. Overall, great experience. I purchased my 2014 Dodge Dart 7/20/2017, The agent Fumi was beautiful. Great excellent customer service! Give her a raise! The process went smooth and stress-free. However, three weeks later I had to bring it back because it kept shutting off. Three weeks after that I was in a loaner. The loaner left me stranded had to call a toll truck. I got another loaner the battery died. I picked my car up in August sometime. Shortly after, I had to take it back for repairs. Electric problems then shortly after, that tire and sensor problems. WTH? I picked my car up in October sometime. So from July until October, I did not trust the car I wanted to return it. They assured me everything would be fine. It is now June 2018 11 months later, and the car is in repairs for overheating engine broken fan or maybe a sensor. I do not know yet. I work two jobs and I am in college. I had to take time off work on both jobs which is Just started in March. I called Ashley Manager Ellicott City, Todd service repair Ellicott City, and Theo CarMax headquarters, customer service. They politely passed me off. I needed a loaner, not a rental after all the inconvenience. My experience has been exceptional. Exceptional Customer After Care is what I need. Instead, they act like they were doing me a favor, Their Robotic line, "I apologize you have this problem", "I am really sorry this is happening" " I can understand your frustration" BS I am tired of those petty customer service lines! (Let your Actions Speak) Truth is once you purchase this car it is now your problem, not ours. A Question would you let your Mother or child or Loved one drive an unsafe, unreliable car? or this car? I had the absolute worst experience here! I was interested in a Honda Crosstour that had to be shipped from another dealer to test drive. I was corresponding with Pete Mack on the updates of the car and when I could come and test drive. We agreed on 2pm Monday. I arrived at the dealer to meet Pete who said he was caught up in a sale but his associate would take us on a test drive. A younger girl about my age maybe younger (I'm 25) took us on the test drive. Before my boyfriend got into the car she asked me what our relationship was I explained he was in fact my boyfriend. During the test drive she asked me what kinda gel I used. She really didn't say much about the car. We came back to the dealer to discuss pricing. While my boyfriend was in the bathroom she asked me was he my sugar daddy? And if we'd be financing the vehicular or not. Taken back by the question I told her that was my boyfriend and that I wasn't sure. Unfortunately the vehicle wasn't exactly we were looking for. My boyfriend suggested I maybe look at some other hondas. We asked the sales associate if she could show us some and she points across the room out a window and says they are out there on the lot. Again we asked her could she show us where she pointed again and said rows h and I. So we got up to look and nothing caught my eye. I wanted to touch base with Pete who I hadn't seen since I walked in and we ran into him on the lot. My boyfriend tells him we feel blown off. He proceeds to tell him I never told him an exact time I was coming. Which was a lie! At this point I'm livid. I. Tried to take to a manager, it was like taking to a brick wall. I have purchased my last three cars from CarMax. I like them because I do not need to worry about haggling; just give me your best price and let's be done with it. That is what you get at CarMax. My boyfriend and I visited the Ellicott City location to look at a specific car we found posted online. We were helped by Senior Salesman, Eugene (look for the yellow shirted gentleman). Eugene was awesome! He didn't freak out when I put the pedal to the metal during the test drive. He didn't pressure us when we let him know we needed a few days to work our finances out. He put the car on hold for us. We came back in a few days and there he was waiting to assist us with no worries or drama. He even noticed a small issue with the upholstery in the car and arranged for us to take it to the location closer to our home for a free repair. I have spent an entire day at a regular car dealership finalizing a purchase. CarMax is a well oiled machine. read more

PISS POOR Company!!! They definitely don't even deserve one star.They sold me a vehicle that had a bed bug infestation. The sales manager thought it was funny that I experienced this . I heard him laughing and he told me that" this happens all the time, we will just bomb the car". I was able to return it only to now have a car that needs a new transmission, new front brakes and they sold it to me with the front camera unplugged. It hasn't even been 30 days! I am convinced they DO NOT INSPECT THEIR CARS!!! I'm in the middle of trying to get my money back and not having to pay any negative equity. So Carmax, you're turn. My truck that I purchased three years ago has been nothing but trouble from day 2. I should have known when the alternator and battery died on the second day, something was up. but I loved my truck by then. Three alternators later, two batteries, a new transmission, new AC, and it's still not working right! but I have some sunshine (maybe) b/c Ms. Flynn from Carmax called and said she would like to help me with my issues/concerns. So I'm bringing my car up there Thursday, and crossing my fingers that they will help fix some of the problems that I complained about WHEN I still had a warranty and they did not fix. (My warranty expired a month before the transmission went out and had to be replaced.) So hopefully in a month or so when things are fixed I can give them six ******* stars!!! read more

Really wonderful experience. My husband bought his Honda CRV from Siwan, Carmax-Ellicott City. He was so impressed with his experience, he recommended I go to Siwan, as well. I wanted to go to several places before making a decision. We started out at EC Carmax, they were helpful, friendly, greeted us warmly. Siwan was with another client but offered his services if we could hang out. I wanted to try other places. We went to Jim Coleman Honda. I forgot what car shopping is like. You can't just get in and out of a car there. All cars are locked so, you have to talk with a sales person and they wanted us to go inside and talk to get our requirements. I did not want to do that so, we left. Next, Carmax Laurel, MD. We did not get waited on. Not one person approached us regarding how they could help. We even sat in cars with our feet dangling out. Not one approach. At one point, we went inside and there were 3 salesmen, in a cluster, not one of them asked if we needed service. While at the Carmax in Laurel we called Siwan about a car that was on Laurel, Carmax parking lot. He said, before we move forward what are your requirements. I told him mine. My husband told him real car requirements and Siwan said I have a car in Frederick I will bring here for you. I think it matches your requirements better than what you are looking at. Within 24 hours or less, I was looking at a beautiful sea-green Honda which exceeded my requirements, matched or were better than my husband's criteria. That was IT...the one! The paperwork to purchase was a breeze. I was out of Carmax in NO time. They were helpful, courteous, polite, and quick. What a truly awesome experience. I would recommend anyone go to EC - Carmax visit Siwan. My favorite color is ocean blue who knew my car would be! Loving my new ride! read more

Mixed review. On the plus side, the service is impeccable, The sales associate I worked with was prompt, attentive, got the cars I wanted quickly, and was a genuinely nice man who clearly enjoys his job. On the minus side, the service department don't seem to know what they are doing. The check engine light of the car I bought went off twice before the 5-day evaluation period was even over--needless to say I am not keeping it. What's worse is that I had to return two of the loaners they gave me while working on the car--one had a dead battery, one had engine trouble. If you are a savvy car shopper with a good mechanic who knows better than to get swindled by the extended warranty, you should have a positive experience. read more
