Everything about it is so spot on, the architecture, the lighting, the soft music, and the eclectic selection of books on offer. The owner, Ernest, was present, friendly, and very informative on questions about books as well as the history of the store. The books are unusual and in several cases rare, the prices reflect the value and seemed reasonable. An unusual first edition will be priced higher but in line with its value to bibliophiles. For example I saw a first edition English translation of Pablo Neruda's "Confieso Que He Vivido" autobiography for $50, in beautiful condition. I said the place looks like it should be in a movie, and Ernest replied that it will be soon. I happened upon it by chance, found a parking place in front of it while going somewhere else. But after running that errand I had to check out this lovely oasis of calm and source of fine books. I ended up buying a paperback novel based on life in Tule Lake during the internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII, because my father was imprisoned there. There is something about being able to flip through pages or find books you otherwise wouldn't have bought when you browse the aisles of a bookstore (I judge a book by the cover, guilty!) On a walk down Alvarado Street this past weekend, I was excited to see that Old Capitol 2.0 has opened in the shopping center by Lallapalooza. I popped in and got the same great service with the excitement that comes with a new, clean space. They are also apparently still doing the book care packages!! I look forward to seeing what they will do as things open up.

This place is packed with books, with an interesting lay out, and a chill vibe. I had a hard time finding specific books on my Goodreads list, but walked away with a classic thriller I've never read "A Simple Plan", and a cozy mystery "The Thursday Murder Club". My husband and I probably spent 90 mins looking at books and the staff left us alone, only asking if we needed help once. The best part...they were having a big sale so both books were under 4 bucks. Our family saw it as we were heading back to Carmel, and decided to stop in. We were too early (it opens at 11 am) so weren't able to go inside the library, but there are quite a few art pieces displayed around the property. The side southern gate vehicle entrance had been opened early, so workers could set-up and do sound checks for the outdoor stage; to be used as a concert venue later that evening (Belle and Sebastian). Took many pictures. When the sound check started to happen (initially blaring 'Happy' by P. Williams), we knew it was time to leave.

I was a customer at Photography West Gallery for several years, during which time I purchased 6…read moreprints. The last print was to be picked up in person, instead they shipped and did not notify me. It was stolen. The replacement print was delivered damaged. Julia Christopher brought a police officer to my home, claiming insurance fraud. It was not, and the gallery refunded my payment. Julia, while in my home, was incredibly rude, making absurd accusations all of which were refuted by the police officer (also there in person). I communicated my experience with Carol, then the owner, who apologized and supported the immediate refund. I would never shop at this gallery again, nor would I recommend it to any photography lover. This morning as I was looking at one of the prints I purchased from them I was reminded of this terrible experience and the treatment from Julia and felt compelled to write a review- especially when I saw that Julia now the owner.

You can find many things that you like to buy but have no use of them in real life . They sell gifts , souvenirs, rings , necklaces and other jewelry. Prices are usually inexpensive. Eventually i found a switch blade piece that caught my eye. I said "hello excuse me, could you tell me how much this pink blade is?" She proceeded to stay behind the counter 20 feet away and shout "oh which one? The diamond one? The carved one?" I said "no the pink one", she huffed over and walked over to me and said "oh yeaaa that one...yea that's reallllllly expensive." I didn't ask her for commentary. I asked her for the price. I repeated "ok well how much is it?" Without checking at all, she doubled down and said " it's like realllly expensive....like $900." I was shocked at her micro-aggression. I didn't want to interact with her any further nor did i want to spend my money there. So i said thank you and left. This is not how you represent small businesses and provide customer service. Teach your employees some etiquette.
