the children's section is fun for kids

This bookstore is located a block up from Fox Theater, where they are having the candlelight concert. This is more than a bookstore, it has so many fun gift ideas for children and adults alike. The service was very good and friendly, and their book selection is up-to-date.I enjoy seeing vinyl records and audiobooks that were reminiscent of how books and music bring people together.

Lovely bookstore! I've lived here all my life and just now found out about this place. The owner makes sure everyone feels welcome and even played some amazing tunes on his guitar--such a perfect atmosphere. It's unfortunate that there's low foot traffic downtown, because this place truly deserves more love and support. Will most definitely be coming back !

Fantastic bookstore. A lot of really old books. Grate for browsing and you're almost certainly to find something you like. I especially love their collection of old National geographic magazines.

Reading glasses to grab if you forgot your own!

If you haven't been here lately, you're really missing out! They have expanded and moved across the street so now you have two locations. The new location across the street specializes in books. They are not just used books but they also carry a selection of nice new books as well. The customer service is top notch. I hang out by the local author section near the front but you can spend hours browsing books here. Humor can be found in the books and decor. They have a pair of reading glasses on the wall in case you need to borrow them! Modern touches like gift cards and a rewards program. I'm glad they are here as one of the staple stores on the block.

I'd never been to Salinas and downtown Salinas along Main Street is a hidden gem of shops with all kinds of things for sale and so much personality. It reminds me of a beloved street like this back in my hometown. The people who own and work the shop are so helpful and kind, really willing to go above and beyond to help you out but also chat with you. The shop itself is lovely and holds all kinds of books. You're absolutely going to want to take your time here. And I recommend the record store across the way, owned by another lovely person who has a sweet, elderly dog named Cocoa who loves to be pet.

NEW LOCATION: 213 S. Main St. Went w a friend to check this place out today...it's pretty big! It's a full bookstore with both older and newer books. There are books by local authors on the table to the right when you walk in. There wasn't a sign saying drinks aren't allowed, so we enjoyed our coffee while browsing. There are comfortable chairs to sit in in two of the isles. Staff was friendly and helpful with our purchases.I'll definitely be back.

This is the actual building of the book store from the old days of Salinas.

We ordered and iced and hot Mexican mochas and they were delicious! I appreciated them having decaf espresso as an option as well for those of us with caffeine sensitivity. The bookstore in the back had so many options, including kids books! My son had a great time looking at their options while we waiting for our coffee to be made. There was plenty of seating both inside and outside which made it easy for us to snag a spot and enjoy our coffees while enjoying the nice day!

Sometimes they've been lovely and bubbly, but for some reason this one blonde staff member never seems like she actually wants to help. I had some questions on summer specials since "refresher" doesn't tell me much and she kept telling me about other drinks instead and being super short. The whole interaction still only had to have taken 2 min with only one person (who had been there for a bit already and seems local/older) behind me. Yet the minute I paid, even though I apologized for the questions and tipped, she loudly and passive aggressively said "sorry for the wait" to the next person right in front of me and they both laughed right in front of my face. I read the other review of the person who said they'd been here a bunch and usually loved it and then had a bad interaction and are also not like the "usual" demo of PG - I am also a person of color who was made to feel the same way. Such a shame what one bad impression can leave. Multiple comments about this has to be more than a coincidence... I would come back only maybe if this person wasn't working but not going to go out of my way anymore

I had heard about this little gem, known as the last bookstore in Carmel, but hadn't had the time to stop by until this trip. The selection of books was decent, and the service was good. The Secret Garden was especially relaxing and beautiful. I really enjoyed walking through it, taking my time, and simply taking it all in. Definitely a lovely little spot to visit while in Carmel!

Tucked in the back is a charming little shop with a cute selection of décor, wind chimes, candles, and more. Absolutely loved this bookstore. Everything about it is so spot on, the architecture, the lighting, the soft music, and the eclectic selection of books on offer. The owner, Ernest, was present, friendly, and very informative on questions about books as well as the history of the store. The books are unusual and in several cases rare, the prices reflect the value and seemed reasonable. An unusual first edition will be priced higher but in line with its value to bibliophiles. For example I saw a first edition English translation of Pablo Neruda's "Confieso Que He Vivido" autobiography for $50, in beautiful condition. I said the place looks like it should be in a movie, and Ernest replied that it will be soon. I happened upon it by chance, found a parking place in front of it while going somewhere else. But after running that errand I had to check out this lovely oasis of calm and source of fine books. I ended up buying a paperback novel based on life in Tule Lake during the internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII, because my father was imprisoned there. I can't imagine finding this tome anywhere else.

First off, I love the political signs posted on the windows, like the "everyone is welcome here except ICE". When I walked in, the store looked exactly like what I've always envisioned a cozy community bookstore to be like--filled to the brim with books and with a lot of character. I came here to sell some books and it was pretty quick--I had probably 20-25 books and the employee finished in less than 10 minutes. As I was waiting for my books, I walked around exploring. I was very impressed with the selection of fiction. There were actually quite a bit of new releases, but also older books and editions that I would likely not find at a corporate bookstore. If I had the time, I'd love to spend 1-2 hours here just browsing. I didn't expect to get much money for my books; I was actually going to donate them and didn't realize that they still buy books, so their offer was ok. I was moreso pleasantly surprised that the employee was so nice lol, and also a little chatty. Honestly the last time I sold books was probably 15-20+ years ago at Half Price Books and I remember they were always pretty rude/standoffish lol. In addition to the service, the atmosphere, and the book selection, the cherry on top for me was that they have a special shelf where you can buy a book there for 50% off for them to donate to the library at Elmwood Correctional Facility at a bit of a loss for the store. I used most of my credit from the books to get a Stephen King book for the library.

The Bad: The staff can occasionally come across as a bit unwelcoming, and I personally wish the storefront atmosphere stayed more focused on books and less on outside messaging. They sometimes price popular or trending used books higher than what you'd pay for a brand-new copy elsewhere. The Good: I absolutely love the character of this bookstore. Shelves packed floor to ceiling, creaky wooden floors, stacks of books everywhere, and even a cat roaming around the store it feels like something straight out of a fantasy novel. I've visited countless bookstores, and nothing beats the old vintage feel of this place. They have a great selection of beautiful leather-bound books, plus an excellent fantasy and sci-fi section. I especially love when they put books out in under $6! The prices at this location are better, and this store feels much more like a classic old bookstore. The Campbell location feels more like a modern bookstore, and the prices there can sometimes be higher. At the end of the day, this place is a San Jose landmark and everyone should visit it at least once. Even when I disagree with certain aspects of it, I still keep coming back because it's nostalgic.
