We stopped here as a midway point from Syracuse, NY to Friendsville, MD. We had a lovely time here. The hotel was super quiet when sleeping, the room was spacious and well appointed, and the staff were exemplary. The best part was the hotel bar and bartender Kyle. We stopped in for drinks both nights of our stay, and it was obvious that he knew his mixology skills, and was a favorite of the locals. We also enjoyed dinner in the hotel restaurant. It was pricey, but the food was fresh and well prepared. We would easily stay here again the next time we pass through. read more

Recently thoroughly redone with taste and care beyond what corporate chains are capable of, although bottled water would have been appreciated. Whistle clean, and when a closet door acted up maintenance appeared within minutes. There was minor noise audible early evening, nothing unusual but it wasn't a lively football weekend, either. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, fully equal to what we expect at five-star resorts. We didn't sample the bar or restaurant except for breakfast, which was as expected, but plan to correct this on our next visit. read more

Our overall stay was pleasant. My two sisters and I were the only residents for the entire weekend so I feel as if we didn't get a true picture of how this establishment is run. The room was beautiful and the food was amazing. So, overall, a 4-star. But our server this morning, David was a 5-star. Because we were the only guests in the dining room, we had his undivided attention. He was very pleasant and kept us giggling with his sense of humor. Best of all, our coffee cups were never empty. I wish Yelp would add a "fine dining" or "restaurant" tag for this hotel because it deserves just that! My family and I came on a Saturday evening around 6pm without a reservation and were able to be seated. We got in, they took our coats, and we were given the option to have a drink in a beautiful sitting room right outside the dining room before dinner. We declined this time but I could definitely see myself just having a drink there next time. The dining room itself is small and cozy with a handful of tables for 2 and 4. The service is impeccable, and I thought the light up menus were a very cool touch for a dimly lit room. For the appetizer we ordered the seafood platter which came with shrimp cocktail, crab meat, and some oysters. All great quality I wouldn't have expected to find in the middle of Pennsylvania. For the main course I got filet mignon - fantastic. Cooked just right. Other plates in our party were the halibut/lobster tail and scallops - all very delicious according to the bites I stole haha! For dessert, we got the creme brûlée - portion size is huge, even for three people, but a tad sweet. I'd recommend pairing with some coffee to better complement the plate. FRAUDULENT BUSINESS - DO NOT MAKE A RESERVATION. We had a hotel reservation and a confirmation email but when we arrived they claimed they did not have our reservation. We showed them our online confirmation and confirmation number but they simply claimed that we had no reservation. They said they were having issues with overbooking from 3rd party sites but we booked directly on their website. When we arrived the front desk person said he had to call his manager to see if there was a room. He had the computer in front of him, of course he knew there was a room but he refused to give it to us. He told us that the manager would call us the next morning. We waited all day and never heard from the hotel. I would not recommend that anyone book with this hotel or you may end up like we did, thousands of miles away from home with no place to stay. read more

We received a gift certificate for Carnegie House and decided to give it a try and I'm glad we did. I ordered the NY Strip steak and a Manhattan. My wife ordered the Squid Ink Pasta and Seafood. For dessert we ordered the Lemon Cake to share. Everything was delicious---my steak was cooked perfectly and the knife went through it like butter. The side vegetables were cooked perfectly and the dinner bread was very tasty. The lemon cake was delicious as well. The waitstaff overall were very professional. Even thought it was pricey, it was well worth it. We will definitely be back for special occasions. The only critique I have is for the waitress or Maitre'd to ask if you've been there before. We found it quite odd at first that we were seated in the library area with the dining room just about empty. We thought the waitress was going to come seat us, but she just handed us a menu. It added to the confusion that we were going to eat in the library, in comfy chairs, on the little side tables with enough room for a drink. So we asked and here's what happens. You are seated in this library until your first course is ready. Drinks are served here along with hors d'oeuvres until that course is ready. Once the first course is ready, you are shown to your table and the food is brought right out. It was a nice touch, but it would have been helpful if we were informed of this before hand. read more

We had our anniversary dinner here. Due to COVID reservations are required. The Inn is beautiful and the food fantastic. If you're looking for fine dining in State College this place is it. The appetizer portions were very small but so delicious. We ordered the salmon and the presentation was so much fun! It came with a lid on it and when it was put down on the table the lid was removed and smoke came out everywhere. As a entree I had the crab cake and it was so fresh. I highly recommend it. Husband had the monkfish. Monkfish was cooked to perfection. For dessert we ordered the "is it an apple?" Another gold star for presentation. On the outside it's white chocolate molded into the shape of an apple. You crack it open to reveal cheesecake and the center filled with apple butter. This place is fantastic on presentation and even better tasting. Highly recommend giving this place a go! read more

My husband and I booked a long weekend here to celebrate our 2nd year anniversary and visit with family in the area. My sister-in-law had held her baby shower here and I was excited to have a relaxing weekend. At arrival, we waited for 20 or 25 minutes at the front desk to get checked in. My husband tried calling the main line to the Inn to get assistance and no one answered. I ended up walking down the hall, through the library and asking a bartender if someone could help us get checked in. He proceed to walk over to the receptionist, who was seated conversing with other guests. She was hardly apologetic, only stated that she was talking with another guest. We came down later in the evening and said we were interested in oysters and a drink. The receptionist asked us if we'd like to dine in the restaurant or get room service. We said we'd like to dine downstairs if there was availability, but did not have a reservation. She said we could sit in the library and they'd seat us in the dining room soon. A few minutes later, a man who appeared to be owner/ manager came over and asked us for our reservation name. I told him my name, not sure if the receptionist had put our name down on a list. He came back and asked me to spell my name and I said we didn't have an earlier reservation but the receptionist had let us know to wait and we would get seated. He was dismissive and said " well, as you can see our dining room is full and you won't get seated for a while". I told him we'd be glad to have the drinks and oysters where we were seated. The waitress who brought us drinks was polite. The drinks and oysters were brought to our seating area quickly. My husband liked his drink, the Paloma and I had a glad of wine. We left for the evening to spend some time with our family and I was hoping the issues would not continue. The next morning we came down for breakfast. My husband and I both had eggs Benedict and home fries. The eggs Benedict was okay and home fries were cooked but definitely not the quality we would expect for the cost we paid for our stay and the reputation of the dining experience. The potatoes had been boiled but had maybe been put in a pan for 20-30 seconds and had no texture. Our waitress was pleasant but brought us over the bill before we were even half way through our meal, letting us know it was getting busy. After breakfast, my husband asked a different receptionist from the previous evening if there was a gym in the building. She came across as very rude and said " yeah, it's part of our accommodations". He then had to ask where it was, as if that wasn't implied in his original question. This morning we came down to breakfast and the dining room was open, lights were on, music was on and we seated ourselves. We sat for several minutes and no one came out to take our order or acknowledge us being there. I wondered if it was not open and they had left the door open accidentally. As the dining room entrance is next to the reception area it would have been nice if there had been some communication that guests needed to be taken care of. We decided to leave after not getting any service. While walking out, I noticed the receptionist was browsing facebook. Our room accommodations were nice. The bed was comfortable and we really enjoyed the jacuzzi tub. We got our things together and proceeded to check out. The receptionist seemed surprised that we were leaving and said "you don't want to have breakfast?". I let her know that we had to get on the road. I've had much better service at chain hotels. Most places make an effort to be pleasant and get to know their guests. For the cost, the service was very poor. Several of our interactions were awkward and uncomfortable and we were made to feel like we were a burden. I wonder if they were discriminating toward my husband who is Indian? Next time we are in town, we will definitely be looking elsewhere. read more

This is definitely a high class establishment and my unfamiliarity with the place showed. A coworker found this place and was intrigued by the high ratings it had. He's a wine fan and their selection drew him in. I felt incredibly underdressed in khakis and a polo. When we walked in, we were greeted with the same flowery scent you'd find in a funeral home. After standing around a bit confused for a minute in the lobby, a woman emerged from around a corner and introduced herself. She asked if we'd like to have some cocktails in the library area before dinner. We declined, but in retrospect I wish I would have. It was a cozy area that seemed to be like a great place to mingle with your party. The actual dining area inside is very small with less than ten tables and the service is rather slow. It took about 2 hours total and we only had an appetizer and entree. I wanted dessert but couldn't tough it out any longer. The food was phenomenal. Granted, I don't treat myself to many meals of this caliber. The meal cost about $75 a person. I tried their bison and I was not disappointed in any way. It was cooked to perfection and was full of flavor. The presentation was impressive as well and almost looked too nice to eat. It surely is time to upgrade the bedding, furniture and curtains. The decor was dark and in need of sprucing up. The bathroom was large, modern but the shower stall was extremely small. I am 120 pounds and found the shower small. I have encounter shower stall this small in Europe. The Restuarant was fabulous! Every now and then I want to live like the land barons of old in a big mansion with a comfortable lounge for entertaining my many guests. Servants, white tablecloths, wood accents, dim lights, pleasant banter. Yes, I want to be Colonel Mustard. The Carnegie House offers fine dining that matches or exceeds that in the State College area. You will be treated like royalty at Mr. Boddy's luxurious estate (before the proprietor's untimely demise), with a hostess who will escort you to the lounge for cocktails. Our server Mrs. White didn't know about the Negroni, but after a quick review whipped up a fine rendition that thankfully lacked poison. My dinner companions Ms. Scarlett (stunning as always in that red dress), Mr. Green, and Professor Plum all enjoyed our cocktails on plush leather seats and sofa. We were then led to the dining room, where we feasted on delicious crab cakes, lamb lolli-pops, and thick cut filet. The pre-fab Godiva chocolate cheesecake was a disappointment. Everything else was superb, with great attention to detail and attentive service. Prices are a bit high, but the experience is original and well executed. So, unless you are Clue-less, you will give Carnegie House a "shot". Just remember to bring an alibi. read more

I would probably not voluntarily come here if I had to pay for the meal but when my old firm decided to take me out on a recruiting dinner (even though I haven't worked there for 2 years) I obliged. The food was good but overpriced for what it was. However it was cool that they serve ice cream from the Penn State Creamery on their dessert menu. The company was rather annoying and I wonder if I sounded that annoying to the recruitee when I was recruiting for PwC, but I digress. All in all, probably one of the better meals I have had in State College but a bit overpriced for the quality of food. For all you students, try to find opportunities to come here and not pay. Eg. Worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant!! We came here to celebrate my brothers graduation. We had scheduled reservations in February for a May graduation to make sure that we would get a table. We arrived early to our 8:30 reservation and were seated 15 minutes after our reservation time. The hostess was no where to be found during the entire time that we were waiting. When we were finally seated to our table we remained there without anyone coming to talk to us, bring is water, or even a drink menu for almost 15 minutes. Finally we went and asked the hostess to please send a waiter over. 5 minutes later a man with a beard as he was walking by hurriedly stated that our water would be coming out. We told him that we had been waiting for any sort of attention for a long time, and the waiter began to argue with us. At this point we decided it necessary to talk with the manager. We informed him of the situation and requested a new waiter because we were no longer comfortable with ours and his condescending manor. The manager said he would take care of the situation. Later on we then noticed that our waiter was still the same man with a beard. Who once again patronizingly was talking to members of our party and was being outwardly rude. Another member of our party then went and talked with the manager about getting another waiter as this was not causing a disturbance in the restaurant. Our waiter never changed. Over all the service was horrendous, the food was underwhelming. I will never go back to this restaurant as they had a blatant disregard for us and the food wasn't very good. read more

What a great hotel in the shadow of the Toftrees Resort! The vintage rooms are elegant, nicely sized, and the bathrooms are large with separate showers and garden tubs. There are only 20 rooms and the restaurant is small so while there for a 2-day work event we had the exact same staff for 4 meals which contributed to the meaningfulness experience. Extremely convenient was that every room's complement of toiletries includes a tube of Crest 3D toothpaste, esp for folks like me who always forget something. Made to order breakfast is included in the room rate; it was the best free hotel breakfast I've experienced. The only constructive feedback is that because the place is small, the staff can get a bit snippy about turning over tables and the conference room for subsequent parties. I'll be sure to return and bring my wife for a weekend getaway. read more

My brother and his wife came up from the DC area the other day. They wanted a great restaurant for their 16th anniversary. They are world travelers and have eaten at the best restaurants in the world. The meal and the service was excellent. I asked them how their meal compared to the 4 and 5 star restaurants in Europe where they have eaten. My brother rated the Carnegie House a 8.5 out of 10. The meals were perfect. The only down side, was the Old Fashioned I ordered was very weak. They could be more generous with the pour, especially for $10 a drink. read more

My wife and I took my brother-in-law and his wife, visiting from California, to dinner there. The atmosphere was as always lovely and the food was excellent. But once the server has asked us if we wanted dessert (no, only coffee), she brought our coffee and bill (over $300), and then she disappeared. She never came back to check to see if we wanted more coffee or anything else. One of us, after all, might have changed our mind about dessert. My sister and I recently experienced a family emergency. My brother-in-law booked us a room at the Carnegie. When it became apparent our family emergency was a family tragedy all of our families came in from out of state. The Carnegie staff was AMAZING. They checked on us, accommodated us, fed us and spoiled us. The rooms were beautiful and comfortable. The food was great. The alcohol selection awesome. The gym facility allowed us to keep up our workouts. I will always stay here on my return visits to State College. read more

This is the best hotel I've stayed at in years, and I am a picky person. This place truly exemplified what it is to stay at a boutique hotel. The room was big and comfy, hotel staff friendly, the whole place was extremely clean. The included breakfast is made to order, and it is the best included breakfast I've ever had, their eggs Benedict are to die for! Their library/ fireplace/bar area is very quaint and their cocktails are excellent. Patrick, the bartender, knows his stuff. The restaurant has the best fine dining in town. I had the oxtail ragu and the duck for dinner and highly recommend them. I hate to leave, but will be back. The only bad thing about this place is that it has raised the bar for any other hotel that I will stay at. read more

Wow... when my wife told me how much we were paying for this place I was pleasantly shocked. Nice setting just off the campus. Incredible accommodations, huge room, stately bath room, very comfortable beds, good coffee. Free breakfast buffet. You can't ask for much more... Well... Two minor complaints. When you know it's going to be in the thirties at night you may want to either turn on the heat or at least let guests know that they have to turn it on. Our room was cold when we returned from a concert in town. Likewise tell me that there is a separate switch for heat in the bathroom. While I'm not here to watch TV... an old tube television is not really cutting it in 2014. Update 11/2015 - Flat screen TVs have made an appearance! They are awfully small... but I'm nit here to watch TV. This visit we have a suite and it is SWEET! Love this place read more

Carnegie Inn is like staying at your rich uncle's home. You never feel like you're in a hotel for sure. The rooms are large and tastefully decorated with comfortable and stylish furniture. The bathrooms are also large with a bath and separate shower stall. After you check in and freshen up, you come into their living room that has beautiful wood walls and crown molding that most people would die for. The room is large enough to seat 20 or more very comfortably. There is also a fireplace. As you sit and relax, a waitress will come and give you a crusty bread with some chopped tomatoes and cheese. Then she will take your cocktails order. She will also give you a menu for dinner which is served in the dining room through the glass doors. She will take your order and let you relax as you enjoy your cocktail. When a table becomes available, the waitress will lead you into the next room for dinner. Outside in the back there are beautiful views of a fairway of the golf course. One of the cool things I first was impressed with was the large brass key for your room door and front door of the inn. Much nicer than the plastic cards you get at a hotel. This is our second stay here and will stay here every time we come to State College, PA. read more

Sadly, a disappointing experience. The food was very good and the atmosphere is very nice in what is supposed to be one of the premier restaurants in town with a highly rated, well known chef but the wait service here is sub par. Where do I start? Rushed service, had to ask to order a bottle of wine, appetizers and salads brought out together. Main course was very good quality wise, not that anyone asked. Only four tables full tonight so not very busy even though it was two weeks before Christmas. No water or coffee refills and when the check came for the three couples, they could not split it and told us the tickets were already closed. What? Texas Roadhouse can split your check. To top it off, we were the last table there and asked to vacate the dining room at 9:50 because they wanted to set up for tomorrow. How sad! read more

We have been celebrating our anniversary here every year since we were married and they never disappoint. You feel extremely welcome from the drinks and complimentary appetizer in the library prior to dinner, to the friendly service and of course, the food is excellent and very tastefully presented. We had the grilled oysters and lump crap appetizers, followed by the crab cakes and scallops. I would recommend any of these dishes. We also want to recognize Inica from the front desk, who helped us adjust our reservations due to last minute unforeseen visit from some out of town friends. We spent the past weekend at the Carnegie Inn while attending a family event. Our son and granddaughter and two friends also stayed here. Our experience was uniformly outstanding. The room was spacious and very comfortable with nice amenities as well as water and chocolate chip cookies we were given after being shown to our rooms. The breakfasts were amazing and even more amazing included in the room rate. I had the best quiche I have ever had - yum. We had drinks in the library and dinner in the restaurant with family. All I can say is it was perfection from service to food. Special commendation to all the kind people working at the hotel for the way they dealt with my 5 year old granddaughter. They played pictionary with her, didn't get upset when she dropped a glass of water in library or dropped chocolate ice cream on the floor at dinner,, and in general treated her like a valued guest. (She said they were her new friends) They treated us all like a valued guest and if we ever have any reason to pass by the hotel again we will be sure to stay there. I came here for one night while traveling to Ohio back in April, and was happy with the experience. That said, I decided to come back when staying for a work conference at Penn State. This is my third night here, and it's one disappointment after the next. A major reason I decided to stay here was due to the complimentary sit down breakfast provided every morning. Prior to arrival, I noticed on their website that they were doing kitchen renovations and a continental breakfast would be provided instead. Furthermore, we were promised a continental breakfast complete with an "omelette station", make your own waffles, etc. This was not the case at all. While I can't say enough good things about the waitress , our promised "continental breakfast" turned out to be 2 eggs and toast. Hardly an array of choice. In fact, no choice at all. I asked the staff (there's no front desk, there's one person working who may or not be available when you visit their office and takes more than 5 phone calls to get a hold of) what happened to the continental breakfast we were promised, and were told it would be that for the remainder of our stay. Again, this did not happen. We returned for breakfast following day and were offered one choice: 2 eggs and toast. So disappointing! On top of that, last night we noticed our tv remote was not working. I called today and was essentially told too bad. No offer to fix it, no compensation or offer of a room change. Horrible customer service. After a long day sitting in boring conferences, I was looking forward to some mindless television prior to dinner. Can't even enjoy something as simple as television. Major disappointment , will never stay here again. Penn State is beautiful and I did decide to stay another night to enjoy the area, however, due to consistent disappointments and no offer to make things right, I will spend my last night elsewhere. Cannot wait to check out of here. Another note: if you want to visit the spa during your stay, make sure to book WELL in advance. We were given spa coupons when we arrived, which proved to be pointless since there weren't any available appointments during my stay. read more

I had an an amazing stay here. It feels high end, yet comfortable. Our room was beautiful. Classy, king bed, sofa, and a beautiful bath with a claw foot tub and large custom stand alone shower. The amenities were lovely, especially the bath salts for my hot soaks in the deep soak tub! The staff is extremely friendly, helpful and service oriented and not "stuffy" like I thought the previous managers were when they opened decades ago. The full breakfast was spectacular, French toast, pumpkin pancakes, eggs Benedict - all included! Plus delicious coffee! They didn't mind when I just had a salad, a glass of wine and dessert for dinner which I appreciated. One night, I ordered delivery and room service dessert for dessert (2 scoops of creamery ice cream with a "pour of Molly's Irish cream" so now I need to go buy Molly's baileys which is better than Baileys). I highly recommend staying in this beautiful, relaxing Inn. Enjoy! read more

But we recently went when the food was mediocre and the service was absolutely atrocious. several drinks were unavailable. Several main items on the menu when not available. *Update: One Week after the ordeal the Inn has decided to refund my money and has now done the right thing. Check your room before you sign in! In short: They gave us the wrong rooms, admitted it, apologized, but refuse to give us the difference of 40$ for not giving us the upgraded room we had ordered. We paid for two rooms, one room is regular and another with a 20 dollar upgrade for "more space". When we arrived we signed in as you would at any hotel, the woman showed us to our room, immediately we said the rooms look the same, the lady informed us that she just does accounts and is unsure. When we checked out two days later, we said to the front desk, the rooms were the same at which time the desk said "WE OBVIOUSLY PUT YOU IN THE WRONG ROOM I AM SORRY" This woman spent 30 minutes trying to subtract 40 dollars from our bill, and ended up accidently charging 380$ extra through a series of mistakes. I understand mistakes, here is where it gets crazy. She said she messed up so much, her manager will be in later and will fix everything, so we left happily, they called back hours later after we had left and (obviouslly they fixed the 380$ but as for the 40$...) He said that when we walked in and signed the first paper we agree to pay that price, when we said that we were given the wrong room, the desk admitted it and was trying to give us money back, he said they were in the wrong! He claims that we have to lives up to our contract we signed, yet the contract clearly had one upgraded room! So they didn't hold up their end of the bargain. My next email is to the Better business bureau, this is not right what they did. Make sure to check your room first, I bet this has happened to people who think they got an upgrade but really just have the normal room without one to compare. read more

This place is nice, but I still do not understand why is so expensive. If you go to another restaurant in NY or Washington DC, a fancy one, the bill would never pass 300 per 5 people. I love food, and I love to attend eccentric places, but Carnegie is really far away from the prices they have. My meals were delicious, but nothing sophisticated. The risotto under the sirloin was hard, not well cooked. The beef, however, was like butter. The cod fish was nothing special. It was a breaded fish, although the consistency was soft. The potatoes presentation in that dish was just perfect. I really, really, really liked the taste of the pasta bolognese. It had this flavor of fresh gardens that drove me insane. Also, I understand they try to make the environment romantic, but, they need more light. If you can tolerate paying top dollar for meh food, drinks that are half full and awful service, look no further. Waitress was horrible. Martini was filled with an inch to go. Wine was 2/3 full. Didn't offer to carry our drinks to table, didn't know what I meant when I inquired as to the type of oysters, did not bother to tell us that there would be anchovies on the ceaser (most high end places will warn you)... food was just meh. Halibut had been frozen. Pasta was good tho... seasonal melon sorbet (she couldn't define what that was either) had no taste whatsoever. Waited 10 minutes for check... 'computer was down' Just disappointing. Have dined and stayed so many times over 20 years... what a shame this place has fallen into the mediocre category. read more

We came here for our grandson's graduation. The staff was rude, condescending, and got into arguments with us. When we asked the manager for a new waiter, twice, he did nothing. The food was cold and overall not that great. Not worth the price. I would never recommend it to anyone, it's way to expensive for what they offer. read more

The Carnegie House has it all. The atmosphere is is intimate and refined. The service is superb. The food, oh the food! One of the best meals I have ever had. A menu that begs for many returns to try every dish offered. No matter your choice, you will not be disappointed. New Executive Cheff, Lisa Palermo, has transformed the Carnegie House from a wanabe great eatery to a magical culinary experience that is worth seeking out no matter how far out of your way you have to go. Although we did not stay there, we looked at some of the rooms which beg for a future romantic weekend away. Carnegie House has really gotten it right on every level! read more
