We plan on making this our new hotel spot when visiting State College mostly due to its location and ease of parking. Stayed over this past New Year's Eve and were pleasantly surprised with free garage parking thanks to Downtown State College and were even able to check in early around noon! They cant guarantee early check in due to fluctuating guest numbers but it never hurts to ask. The ladies at the check in desk were very pleasant and helpful explaining everything included in our stay and some area attractions we might like. Our stay included free breakfast, a perk that makes the extra cost worth it to stay and to our surprise the hot items change daily! One morning it was pancakes, hashbrowns and sausages/ham, the next cheese omlettes, breakfast potatoes, bacon. They always had staples like yogurt and fruit, oatmeal, cereal and bagels and coffee and tea so there was something for every taste. The women stocking the bar was very nice and answered any questions we had about the food. Again we had a large king room, comfy bed and plenty of room space and a large bathroom. Only room complaint was there was an awkward partition in the room that made it strange to talk if someone was on the couch and other on the bed. Felt like I was talking to someone in another room. Other than that I look forward to staying here again when we visit the area! read more

As soon as you walk into the lobby... There is an EMPTY desk with a sign on it directing you to take the elevator to the second floor for your check-in. That's a very cold first impression.... You should have somebody at that desk, checking people in with a secondary location available on the second floor. For security reasons alone.... That is a big mistake. I have traveled across this country and to many other countries.... You never walk into an empty lobby with a sign on a desk. miserable fail..... I took the elevator to the second floor to check in. You need to know your license plate number which I didn't. Therefore, I had to go back downstairs through the cold lobby outside to get my plate number. This place does not have its own parking and they make you pay for the parking deck across the street. They do not own that parking deck, so it is packed with just anybody... Very inconvenient.... I've been coming up to Penn State since my son became a student 20 years ago and then I subsequently bought rental units. I do not usually stay at this hotel, but my Hyatt card allowed me some free nights at this place, so I took them. Your room key also works the elevator. That is quite bizarre. I am familiar with a room key, giving you access to a penthouse or restricted floors but not every floor. Are you worried about Security? Why don't you put a member of your staff at that empty desk in your lobby? You know where that large staircase is leading up to the second floor? Somebody with ill intentions can easily walk into your lobby walk right up the steps to where people are gathered at the bar or the restaurant.... There is nobody to stop them at the first point of entry. Bizarre. July 4, 2026 day one Barely any television service the entire afternoon or evening. I called a few times about this issue and they seemed less than impressed. There is this sound of water through the pipes in the bathroom that rushes through consistently and then it's very loud and I'm not sure about it. The room was very clean. July 5, 2026 Headed to the second floor for their breakfast. I have to start a painting job so I was there at 6:30 when it opened. The buffet was very clean and well organized. Food was good. Then I headed to the front desk, where I spoke to Martin about the television set. I told him I had already called the day before a few times. He said he would have it checked. I went to work. I came back at 4 PM. I could not get into the parking garage. The card that they gave me suddenly stopped working. I called to help button and they told me to cancel on the screen. I did that and it offered me a ticket to pay for parking. So now I will have to bring that to the front desk this morning before I head out to work. When I arrived back at my room, my room was not cleaned. I had to call the front desk and ask for towels and coffee. They came up right away. They did not leave me any bottled water for the coffee. I called the front desk. They told me they do not give out more mini waters after the first day. It's literally two bottles of miniature waters that might add up to one regular bottle. This place is supposed to be considered upscale in this neighborhood.... Im from the city so upscale has a different meaning for me. I would not stay here again for one very important reason only.... That entrance point into this hotel is open to anyone and everyone. There is nobody on the first floor to check anybody. That is a HUGE security breach in a time where Security needs to be at the forefront of our minds. read more

I booked and prepaid for a three-night stay through Booking.com while moving our son into Penn State. We ended up completing the move sooner than expected and checked out after two nights. I requested a refund for the unused third night, which the hotel declined. What's particularly frustrating is that the hotel was clearly not at full capacity, meaning there was no lost opportunity tied to our early departure. Despite this, Hyatt Place refused any accommodation beyond offering a 10% discount on a future stay--an offer I declined, as we have no intention of returning. Booking.com indicated they would issue a refund if the hotel approved it, but Hyatt Place would not. This rigid stance feels short-sighted and unnecessarily inflexible, especially considering we will likely be traveling to State College multiple times per year over the next four years. Additionally, we have friends and family who will be visiting the area, and based on this experience, we will not be recommending this property. This situation reflects a "penny-wise, pound-foolish" approach to customer service. A small gesture of goodwill could have easily secured repeat business and positive referrals. The lobby is OK and you have to take an elevator up to the second floor to check in. Also, parking is across the street where you have to know your license plate. The breakfast was OK and it was included, which was very nice the room that I was in had some issues with a draft coming in from the window. Also, the bathroom wasn't as clean as it should be with two tiny towels and the sink did not drain correctly so I had to change rooms. The new room had noise coming from the outside, which was due to all the rooftop conditioners and heating equipment all night. I heard a knocking I could not sleep at all. The carpet has some stains on it and it does have a musky old smell to it. The wallpaper is coming off in spots. If you can get a deal a cheap deal then it's a OK place to stay. Note: This review was updated a month after I wrote my initial review. This hotel is part of a larger complex including condos, a TARGET, and attached Federal Taphouse restaurant. I did not need parking but it is located nearby in a deck. The location is very close to campus, plus campus shuttles and public transit stops are nearby. My room was modern, neat, and clean (other reviews indicated problems I did not have). Water pressure for a shower was good (not great) and the water was hot, neat trick in many high rise hotels. There is no fan in the bathroom, so be forewarned. The website does offer some slightly confusing information on dining options, even the staff said that. Federal Taphouse restaurant is the de facto hotel restaurant (a separate business) and I would highly recommend on food quality and adult beverages selections. The hotel does have a very good free breakfast offering in a nice seating area away from the check in areas. A third restaurant basically functions as a bar opening around 4 pm. If none of this works, downtown has many offerings and cuisines. The only major issues I had was (1) no housekeeping during a five day stay. I even requested it mid-week, never happened, mystified why, and (2) I was changed for parking when I did not need it, and it took serious discussion to remove the charge. I expected more from Hyatt in providing the basic services of housekeeping and getting the bill straight. The hotel is conveniently located near campus and is right next to a target. Parking is right across the street and easy to access. The rooms are spacious but the hot water takes forever to heat up and the water pressure is very very low. We'd stay here ago for the convenience, but for the price, you'd expect quicker hot water and more than a trickle from the shower. read more

The location is great, so it gets one star. Aside from that, not so great. Our room smelled like cigarette smoke (then we and our clothes stunk too) and the view out the window was a bunch of equipment/roof. There were hairs in one bed and the shower was dingy. I've been staying at Hyatt Place in State College for many years now, and in recent years I've noticed a major decrease in the upkeep of the property and they've been charging no-shows to guests that actually stayed and then not refunding. Please be aware of this as you book your stays and check your credit card statements. I've been fighting a charge for three months with zero follow up from any manager. Very frustrating since it's in such a great location and now it just seems like they're taking advantage of their convenience. read more

The room was modern, clean and the right size. The breakfast was fresh and constantly coming in repleshinment, since there must have been some teams in for the weekend. I stayed here on a business trip on a Thursday night. Great location in downtown State College and walking distance to the downtown bars/restaurants. When I arrived around 2:30 (check-in is at 3 pm), the area you park to check-in was small and already full. The hotel is on the left side of Beaver Ave and the parking garage is on the right side--there is no street parking. I pulled into the parking garage and grabbed a ticket, although for hotel guests there is an area to swipe your hotel room key and parking is then added to your bill ($11) and parked. I walked over to the hotel and checked in (check in on second floor). They will take the parking garage ticket from you and add it to your bill. No biggie. The room was really nice/clean with a king size bed near the 6th floor window with a view over part of town, mostly other building roofs, but it was still a nice view. There was also a mini sectional couch, a coffee maker and a mini-fridge (usually standard in most hotels). A pretty decent breakfast buffet was included that had scrambled eggs, sausage, hard boiled eggs, fruit, fruit juices, oatmeal, pancakes, waffle maker, coffee, and a mix of potatoes and sausage. We visited the bar area while waiting on other people to arrive. It's small but had a decent choice of beers and liquors. The bar staff was very personable. We used a conference room for our meeting with a conference call phone. They placed bottles of water at every place setting, which was nice, but the water was warm. The only thing we didn't really like was that we had to give a staff member of the hotel our call in number, passcode and security (host) code as they wouldn't let us dial out on our own. This is the only place we've ever been that requires this. Overall, it was a very pleasant stay and we intend on returning for future meetings/overnight stays. read more

This is the only place to stay in State College... If you can get a room. It is so popular here due to the central location, new building, and amenities including shopping and an on-site taphouse. You simply can't go wrong with the Hyatt brand and if there ever is an issue, they are so quick to make it right. Now that the new hotel is in its first full year of operation most of the kinks have been worked out and things run incredibly smooth. Of course there will be issues when it's a football weekend or other event that has the hotel filled to capacity. There's only so much time and so many people that can be served at once. Usually you win, sometimes you lose, much like our beloved Nitrany Lions. Enjoy your stay at this awesome hotel in beautiful state college. read more

I would stay away from all Hyatt Hotels! If you get hurt in the hotel they will brush it under the rug and they do not care about the guests of the hotel. This hotel was filthy. I cannot believe it is a Hyatt. The carpet was dirty, stained and didn't appear to have been vacuumed in quite some time. Even worse, the bathroom had not been cleaned. The shower still had long black hair all over it when I walked in. I have blonde hair..... so Hyatt housekeeping has no recourse in this discussion. Our rate for admitted students day was a reasonable $93 dollars for a room with 2 queens and a sofa bed. Staff friendly and check-in a breeze. Decent room view on 6th floor of campus, town and distant mountains. Couple of items making this a just ok place: Enter at street level to an empty lobby and bell desk. Took some time to figure out reception desk was on the second floor. No ice machine installed during our visit, already in jambes, so I had to forgo ice in my nightcap. Lastly, attempted to book a room for student drop off in August, and found that the best price for the room was 4x times what we paid. read more

Location location location this hotel has a great location. Right in the center of town next to an above a Target Store. They have free parking in the parking deck across the street. It's walking distance to almost everything in town. It was reasonably clean in a much newer facility. Much better than some of the older ones I've stayed at in town. I was a little disappointed with the blackout shades they worked about 95%. One of them had some damage to it and let a little bit of light in. Have stayed at this hotel previously with minimal issues, but this stay was bad. Only one of three elevators would reach our floor (hotel staff knew of issue, but did not have service come to resolve). Hotel experienced a water pipe break prior to our stay, which left the room we were assigned to with very inconsistent water (leading to either no water or scalding while showering). Fridge in room didn't work and staff wanted us to come pick one up - or move our room (for the second time in one day). Coffee at breakfast bar constantly empty. The hotel is in a great location, parking is convenient, and the staff seems to want to help but seems the owner / manager does not equip the staff to execute with excellence. read more

While away for the weekend, I decided to head up to State College to check my alma mater while they played Northwestern. Even though, it was an away game, I always love to check this school out! I usually stay at the beautiful Nittany Lion Inn, but the rates a bit cheaper and at the new Hyatt Place for and still in a great location so I decided to come here. It didn't start off too well, as I was forced to squeeze into their small front parking lot, which barely fit 4 cars. I than had to park my car across the street for $10 a night, which seemed a bit odd since I was a guest. After such a long drive, I wish they had valet that could take your car across the street. Even worse, when you get into the building you are greeted by nobody and have to go all the way upstairs, to the second floor, which I found odd. Eventually, I got to the actual lobby, which was nice and modern. I especially like their large class of 1985 fraternity picture of beta sig in the lobby. Checking in was very quick and orderly, though the lady gave us the wrong breakfast time, but later clarified that those hours were from her old job. Also, I checked in an hour early and because of that they were unable to provide with a room with the view of the campus even though I requested that. I fully understand they may not have the perfect room, but they gave me a terrible view that looked at an alley. My actual room was very nice and modern. The beds were nice and comfortable and the rooms was clean. Though, there were a few problems that I don't think a new hotel should be facing. First, the A/C was LOUD it was rattling and making all sorts of odd noises. To add insult to injury, our TV was very soft and we couldn't turn up the noise. Therefore, I couldn't hear the TV. I also found it odd that the room lacked a microwave, which is an amenity hotels should have. However, the most disappointing thing about this hotel is the pitiful breakfast. I went downstairs looking forward to a nice, hot breakfast, but it was the exact opposite. The eggs were runny, soggy and cold, the pancakes tasted like they had been microwaved and the "bacon" was a sad excuse for bacon. I also overheard a kind gentleman complain that there was no syrup. Also, the plates they had were really small and some were even dirty. One continuous problem I had was with the elevators. They only had two because the third was for fire emergencies. They were SO slow and took forever to stop at a floor. There wasn't even a game at Beaver Stadium so I can't imagine how bad it would be than. Altogether, this hotel is pretty average it has its positives and negatives. However, I think I will go back to staying at the Nittany Lion Inn rather than return here. Best of all, #4 Penn State beat Northwestern 31-7 and moved up to #3 in the polls!!! #WeAre!!! read more

Great Location, very nice modern clean hotel. Best View in Happy Valley by far. From our room we could see Old Main, Beaver Stadium, Mt. Nittany, and Tussey Mountain. Not many locations in State College where you can see all of that. Saw other reviews with complaints about parking - I don't understand. There's a 6 story parking garage literally steps across the street. The hotel gives you a card at check-in that lets you in and out of the garage as often as you would like during your stay. Garage tall enough for my Tahoe with roof rack. Breakfast is great too, better than most free hotel breakfasts. Would stay again for sure. read more

Worst Hyatt that I have ever been to. Only room for four cars in front of building. Had to circle the block four times to very in. While I went to check in a homeless guy wanted talk to my wife in the car. The area was so small the guy in front of us in line almost hit my car. When you park for the night you have to park in a structure across the street. I didn't like it, and I definitely wouldn't want my wife or daughter in the after hours. When you enter the site on the first floor you find the lobby is on the second floor. So you have to hump up the stairs or try to figure out their Elevator. Room was acceptable. Had a large bump out from the wall for service piping. It made noise all night. At 6:00 we awoke to the sound of the garbage truck emptying the dumpsters in the alley. But they are fine in about a half hour. Went to breakfast. It looked awesome, but tasted awful. EVERYTHING was cold, except for the pot of powdered eggs. We threw it away and went to a gas station for something to eat. I would never go back to this property. Hyatt's are usually fantastic but this one is bad. read more

So I stayed for 30 days here as I was in town for work purposes. The rate was fair and included parking (across the street) and breakfast (which a hot breakfast with good variety) 1. Very conveniently located with access to all downtown restaurants and shops. Target store attached and just below it with ability to access indoors and restaurant also attached. 2. The rooms were good size and had good amenities. 3. WiFi was excellent with ability to stream content and video chat. 4. Staff were great and helpful 5. Getting amazon packages or other mail was easy and reliable. All in all a great experience, would definitely stay again. Tip: you do get points for Hyatt membership on the long term rate so don't lose out on it! read more

In town for the Penn State campus tour, stayed in this place right in the middle of happy valley. Parking was 10 bucks across the street. Hotel shares space with a condo, target, and other tenants. Rooms are clean, modern, and brand new. No microwave in the room and a.c. is noisy as most are. Since its right smack in the middle of their small little town, there is more than enough eateries to par take. It's fantastic to have a target downstairs to pick up snacks and whatever you need. There is no where to park except limited meter parking and garages. This is our 2nd Hyatt place stay and we love it. read more

I booked 3 nights at this hotel. My room was big and my bed was comfy. The included breakfast had a good amount of hot options (eggs, potatoes, bacon, pancakes, and more). The staff was also really friendly and were able to help me solve an issue with the supplied printer in the lobby. So what went wrong? In short, the shower. The first night I got in, I hopped in the shower. Lukewarm water. So I went down to the hotel and asked if they could fix it, as I was headed out for a little bit. The next time I showered was in the morning, and the water was still cool. So I said something again. I was out all day, and when I came back late at night, hopped in the shower... it was cold again. The next morning I woke up sick, took another cold shower (which felt horrible with a cold), and told the desk clerk for the third time. She asked if I was going to be in the room, and when I said no, she said she would send someone up right away to fix it. When I got back that night, there were things moved around near the shower. Towels hung up differently, shower head moved. Surely they fixed it this time. Nope. Another cold shower that night and the next morning. Either maintenance isn't doing their jobs or the Hyatt simply doesn't care. Either way, I'm not likely to book this hotel again. Will definitely stick with Days Inn next time, even though it's a little old. At least I can count on a hot shower there. I spent 8 days in a third world country earlier this year and had hot water every day there, so there's really no excuse for Hyatt. Just terrible, terrible service. read more

We stayed here two weekends ago and had a great experience. The rooms were very modern and clean. Parking was a breeze (although it was $10/day) and hot breakfast was included. This Hyatt is located conveniently downtown next to all the shops and PSU campus, which made walking or taking an Uber to where ever we wanted to go super easy! The breakfast was mediocre, but at least it was included. There's a taproom bar connected to the hotel, as well as a Target, which makes for easy meals and shopping. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay in State College. read more

This was the first Hyatt Place I stayed at, and based on my experience at this location, it will not be my last. The hotel is new and the rooms are spacious (much larger than the average hotel room) and modern. The same is true for the bathrooms, where you'll find a large walk-in shower (there is no bathrub). The photos of the rooms on the hotel website are accurate (note the couch, which I believe folds out). The location is excellent, and you do not need to exit the building to go to Target (downstairs) or Federal Taphouse (the other side of the building). The front desk will be happy to point you in the right direction. read more

Pathetic! No one at the entry desk - middle of the day. Shouted, waited about 15 minutes - finally had to call the Hyatt 800 # so they could call the SC hotel and rouse someone to check us in. No apologies when 20-something arrived - just "oh, we like to hang out on the other floor." Pull-out only had sheet-thin blanket. Hotel refused to provide a heavier blanket - even though hotel was dead empty. They have NO parking, nor do they reimburse for parking - which is across the street and up a non-sidewalked car ramp -- a real delight with kids and luggage. Sadly, I find this typical of a SC hotel. Apparently they figure that they'll break even with football season so it doesn't matter how they treat the customers. I guess I'll start staying further out - maybe I can get decent service that way. read more

I read the reviews prior to arriving and thought people were nitpicking. Then, we stayed here and I realize the things many pointed out were spot on. The property is new and clean and the location will ensure it's always booked. However, that being said, the parking situation sucks. There's very limited pull in access to check in and unload (maybe 3-4 cars?) and no valet option, so you have to drive and park in the parking garage (for a $10 daily fee). With such limited space, valet really makes more sense. The elevator is, indeed, ridiculously slow. I can't even believe I'm typing that, but it's slow. I can't imagine the wait time on a football weekend. This is a personal pet peeve (and I don't deduct stars for it ;) ), but I detest not having an ice machine on each floor. I think only two floors had ice machines (and no signage to direct you there.) The bottom line is it's better than your grandma's house ( The Atherton) or the Days Inn, so you're going to stay here if you want to be down town and it'll be fine. If you don need to be right downtown, book the Penn Stater instead (and they shuttle!). It is convenient to have Target and Fed Tap on the same property. read more
