Every time I visit home (East Chicago), it's an absolute MUST that I stop at Carniceria La Chiquita. First, they've moved next door from their old location on Indianapolis Boulevard, into the old KFC. It's a larger building and serves more as a supermarket than I think their previous spot did. I only get their tamalas, which come four ways (that I know of): beef, chicken, pork with red sauce and pork with green sauce (spicier). I always get the chicken and green pork. Unlike these places in Columbus, Ohio (yeah, I said it), they give you a HEALTHY portion of meat at a much better price! They must literally make thousands each day, because the line for the tamales is always long and people buy serveral dozen at a time. When you ask for your type, they go back and wrap them while you wait. The end result is a (very) hot package of twelve. You can literally eat them on the way home. The masa (breading) is perfect, yet in no way, dominates the meat. Can't say the same about these other spots that seem to rip you off. My only disappointment is that their price jumped from $7 to $12 per dozen, which is a significant increase. However, it has been 2 years since my last visit, so between inflation and business they might have lost during the height of the pandemic, it's understandable. But then again, $12/dozen is still a fair price for such as good tasting item. I bought 5 dozen, at two dozen and froze rest, which will be quite tasty when I decide to heat thaw and reheat them. I gave a dozen to one of my sons and his girfriend, who sent me a motion clip of her enjoying it. She told me that it took her back to her childhood in Vegas, where they also make wonderful tamales. As always, I will be back. But next time, for many more because once I posted them on Facebook, several (Columbus) friends asked me to take orders for them as well. read more

Will not return to this place. Treat you like cattle. Unfriendly, especially the cashiers, they are so busy talking and playing around that I would not spend my money here again. Stop going here for that same reason, when spending 70 to 80 dollars every time going there and they are unfriendly, I would rather spend my money someplace else. Worst customer service I've ever received. I asked for tamales and they were just placed on the counter by the person that was dispatching , he didn't ask if I needed anything else, I was going to get some of their chicharrón. They have two cash registers and two cashiers but both cashiers were working on only one register so the wait in line was longer than it should have been. Neither cashier greets the customer unless the customer is a regular and when they are checking someone out they are gossiping, hence the reason for the long wait in line. Their choice in music is horrible, Spanish gangster music with all swear words, it seems more for the employees than for the customers-this made my wait time in line unpleasant and put me in a bad mood. Best Tamales!!! I am always wanting the tamales on the weekend. Shoot any day really. I love that they added the bean and cheese ones. Brings back memories of my grandfather. I just wish they were made as regularly as the pork or chicken ones. and available all the time. They are delicious, bean with chorizo and cheese.. that's all I want. Lol This is our go to place to get tamales to add to Christmas Celebrating. And I love that you can call and reserve. But you do have to buy so many dozens in order to reserve. The other day my sister and I were driving down Indianapolis Boulevard when she happened to see a sign that said tamales. I said to her, do you want to stop there? She said sure. I didn't know what to expect. As we were walking into the store I saw people walking out with bags of tamales and I thought this must be pretty good. We walked in there was a meat/deli counter and they had tamales wrapped in a package. I wasn't too sure about that but I ordered a chicken tamales and pork tamales. They came in a dozen each. We got in the car and opened the chicken up. It was piping hot! When I say that was one of the most flavorful tamales I've ever had! I wanted all my friends to try it. They were amazing! I DON'T BUY THEIR TAMALES ANYMORE, Masa isn't smooth, tamales have very little flavor & are dry. For about 15 years it was my go to place for tamales, they WERE the BEST but I no longer recommend them to anyone. So sad because it's not easy to find really good tamales like theirs were. read more

It's a typical Mom and Pop Mexican grocery but they are known for their tamales. I have been eating the tamales from here for at least 4 years now and to me they are the best I've had. You can get them throughout the week but they make them fresh every Thursday. Buy them Thursday and they'll melt off the husk. read more

Drove 45 minutes on a Sunday morning to check out this place. It was truly a hole in the wall. There were people lined up to the door. The family of workers were steady replenishing fresh hot tamales, carnitas, menudo and barbacoa. Very impressive. Check out was not bad because mom and daughter were just as fast as all the other employees. Couldn't wait to get home to try the tamales, carnitas and barbacoa. Had a few handfuls in the car. Yummy! Very nice! Tamale melt in my mouth, carnitas tender and soft, barbacoa juicy and flavorful. This place is definitely worth the trip. Tamales are only $7.49 a dozen. They have chicken pork and cheese. They also have the traditional Mexican pantry staples as well as a small meat market. Meat looked good. I bought some arrachera. If you love good tamales you must visit La Chiquita. All haters that don't know tamales shouldn't review.... it's not how much filling you put in the tamal that makes the tamal... It's the over all taste... And their tamales taste soooo good. Everyone agrees that there's a line out the door to this store for their tamales.... trust me. Those people that are out to the entrance are the ones's that don't give a crap about reviews... we just know what is good. and These tamales are great. I read all the reviews and even my niece said they had the best tamales there. So I ordered 3 dozen for the holidays and I was so disappointed and pissed! Hardly any filling! I ordered pork and there was a couple of shreds of pork that's it. I can't return them. It's a crap shoot when you order tamales. You can't see the filling. Then ends of the tamales had shreds sticking out and I thought "Wow" filling coming out. Wrong! That was all of the filling. Won't go back again read more
