One of my favorite places. They are currently struggling to stay afloat after a fire broke out. My neighbors, family, and I visit weekly to continue supporting this family-owned business. My Grandfather passed away some time ago, prior to this, he couldn't take care of himself due to a series of falls, causing him to temporarily loose his executive function. We had to care for him and bring him his essentials. his greatest regret was that he could no longer go to Hyde Park Produce to buy his blueberries and strawberries. Aptly, this small, family-run grocery store's produce section is well-stocked and inexpensive, and their bread, from Donato's Bakery in Ukrainian Village, will addict you to its quality. Their staff are friendly as well. Weirdly, however, this is worlds apart from their dried and canned goods, which (perhaps because all seemingly imported from Europe or the Levant) are sold at extreme markups--that is, if they're available at all, as entire shelves of staple foods often sit empty, forcing a trip to a second grocery store if--heavens forbid--you need a specific ingredient for a recipe. Recently, for instance, they were out of beans and chili powder! In sum: if you live in the area, go to HPP for your fruits and veggies and to TJ's for everything else. read more

I'm not one to criticize attempts at art/advertising, but Why is there a picture of cake or pastry to represent a store that sells fresh produce? They DO have good baked goods here, which I rarely indulge in, but one should definitely go for the good deals on fresh fruits and veggies. They could use a bigger organic section, but I'm in the 'whatever, as long as it's fresh fruit and it's cheap' category. They have frozen food here as well, fresh hot food, a deli, hard to find brands of soup, a LOT of milk and off-brand yogurt, protein bars and beverages. You won't find Coke/Diet Coke though! It gets crazy busy here, and while I like Molly Z.'s 'cozy' description, it is just SO cramped! Maybe they could rent space from the defunct Treasure Island on Lake Park! It was too hot this month. And my kids want a cold drink. So my wife gave me a list of what to buy for our snacks. My wife wants to prepare a fruit shake, sushi and pizza. I park my car in their parking lot. When I enter, luckily there are only a few customers inside and it's not a hassle to buy my needs. I went first to the fruit section. There are a lot of fresh fruits here. There are strawberries, lemon, mango and avocado in the list so I purchased half a kilo of it. Then I went to the dairy section to buy condensed and evaporated milk. Then I bought a sushi pack in other sections. After I bought those I went to the counter and paid for them. I wanted to know if they would be restocking a certain milk I like and I asked the cashier to see the manager. She found the manager and said to him in earshot of me, "oooohoo, Karen wants to speak to a maaanagerrrr!" My name is not Karen but she made him think that I had a complaint or was going to give him trouble like the meme goes... it was so rude and unprofessional, and because of that he ended up not listening to anything I said because he thought I was trying to complain about something and no matter how hard I tried, he didn't want to understand what I was saying and walked away in the middle of my sentence... the people who work there are immature, careless and inconsiderate. I haven't been back since because that was the last straw. On a previous occasion, I was at the deli counter and the woman serving me already had gloves on coming from the back. She did not change gloves but whatever I let that slide. She took out the meat I wanted, put it on the slicer, and was about to start cutting, but then the phone rang. I was like no she's not going to answer the phone....! well guess what, she did and with the same gloves went back to cutting the meat, touching each slice with the same hand she held that dirty phone with. Bacteria contact transference, pathogens. The woman already had a bad attitude so I just let her finish, but I could not purchase the meat. read more

This neighborhood gem is one of my favorite spots. I love that there are great deals to be gotten on produce, sometimes even on organic produce. The last time I was there, I got Driscoll Organic strawberries $1.29 for a pound and organic blackberries for $2.79! They also will mark dairy and such down when the expiry dates are nearing. I got Organic Valley Cage Free Large Brown Eggs for $1.99, after having just paid $3.99 elsewhere on sale! They stock Boar's Head products in the deli, the cold prepared foods are tasty (the guacamole and roasted corn salsa, especially), the desserts are sizable and reasonably priced, they carry D'Amato bakery goods (including those awesome individual tomato focaccia), and the breakfast bar on the weekend is delicious and stupid cheap, considering! I appreciate organic and natural/local selection of meats, frozen food, and snacks. Yay for the Hansen's natural soda variety available, too! The prices are a bit steep for some items, but I understand the difficulty maintaining a profit margin when you don't have the buying power of larger chains and such. The staff is friendly and helpful, the store is always clean and well lit. The nuns from St. Roger Abbey are a delicious bonus of a weekend morning, also, with their organic French pastries. The food was much cheaper before they moved in their current location . Nice Boar Head cheese and meat selection, good pico de Gallo. Worst experience ever, don't come here for fresh fruits. We've brought a watermelon, thinking it's fresh and they go along with their slogan: "fresh fruits and vegetable daily" Total lie. We've cut up this particular watermelon, to come to find out it's rotten and totally disgusting. The cashier did not have us out receipt. I called and email customer service. The customer service didn't get back to us until 8 days later!!! She said she'll handled us herself but there was another manager on duty who wanted to take care of us. We got there, the manager was rude... Whatever. Anyhow they gave us a replacement watermelon which is great but the watermelon wasn't ready and the watermelon we've received was extremely small. The watermelon we're originally brought & paid for, was extremely huge! That's why we got it! Love, love, love this market. I'm here almost everyday. The produce prices are amazing!!! I love buying their reduced bananas. For a small store, they have a wide selection of foods. They even have vegan cheeses and tofu/tempeh! I buy the majority of my groceries here. You can really get a lot of good produce for cheap - even their organic selection isn't overly pricey. Great place to find certain vegetables: basil, mint, mushroom; fresh and cheaper than other groceryin Hyde park!

Pros: -Large variety of produce, including carambolas (seasonal), heirloom tomatoes, dragonfruit on occasion, etc. -Most of the produce is pretty cheap, and certainly much cheaper than the chain groceries in Chicago -They have all of the basics. If you're cooking a meal from scratch, you'll likely be able to find every ingredient. -They carry some high end specialty products (e.g., non-wheat flours, stone ground matcha green tea powder, vanilla beans, gluten free cookies) -There are a few things that are better priced here than chain stores. For example, kerrygold reserve cheddar cheese is 4.29 here, but runs 5.00-8.50 at other grocery stores. Organic milk and free range omega 3 eggs are also cheaper than what you'd expect at a chain. -The staff is ALWAYS nice -They carry bread from Medici, a local bakery/restaurant Cons: -It's a neighborhood market, and they don't carry a lot of national brands. If you're trying to get Cheerios and Coca Cola, you'll have to head next door to CVS -Sometimes the produce available is ready to be eaten THAT day. Just make sure you look at what you're getting and feel it for its consistency -It's a little bit small and can get crowded on weekends or after work. I avoid peak hours -There are a few products that seem more expensive here than elsewhere, such as rice. It could also be that they're selling a different quality of rice, but I'm usually just looking for cheap when it comes to rice -I once saw a block of cheese in the deli specialty cheese section that was expired. If it's a food that doesn't see a lot of turnover, check the expiration date -Meat is expensive. Then again, this has helped me keep my meat consumption down. Overall, this is my favorite place to shop in Hyde Park. For the few items that they don't carry, I can usually get them at CVS right next door. read more

For fresh groceries, this place is hard to beat for price and quality. It is inexpensive for Hyde Park and has a great selection of fresh produce. You can definitely pay less at a bigger grocery store, but if you live in Hyde Park, HPP is a good alternative. They have a great selection of peppers and dried peppers. Sometimes they have lemongrass. The baby bok choy from there is always excellent. Decent selection of dried herbs and spices. Great selection of fresh herbs. Awesome breads from the Medici bakery. Coffee beans are very expensive. Deli counter is nice, they have all Boar's Heads meats and cheeses. A good place to buy fresh produce, nothing else. The produce is ridiculously cheap - way cheaper than Wal-Mart. They have more organic options than most places, but everything is not always super fresh. There is also a decent grocery selection (especially for cheese and bread). I shop here because of convenience and nothing more. Produce quality is inconsistent and grocery items are incredibly overpriced. I'm sure the owners feel they can charge for such convenience and having such a captive audience. One of the things that bothers me the most is that many of the cashiers wear rubber food service gloves while handling money. The gloves look dirty, many have holes in them, so they are not changed out (magic gloves, if you will). Then they are handling my produce, groceries, bags etc. I get it, money is gross...but CHANGE YOUR GLOVES. Dirty gloves do not help anyone I adore supporting local businesses, but for my grocery needs, I am counting the days until Whole Foods opens down the street. Better product, more variety and definitely more helpful and customer focused staff. Also, salad bar. I will be sorry to see a local neighborhood grocery store go out of business when a large corporate vendor moves in down the street, but I feel you brought it on yourself. read more

Like many other reviewers of Hyde Park Produce, I used to walk right by this place, all the while complaining about the lack of fresh produce in the Hyde Park neighborhood. Tsk. Shame on me. Fresh produce was here all the time! There's a tremendous variety of very fresh fruits and veg plus a lot more. They offer locally produced, humane certified meats and have a surprisingly good selection of organic products. They also have a nice little deli. Overall they are quite competitively priced. Plus there's the nun who hangs out by the checkout counters on the weekend selling fresh baked tarts and other lovely items. She was donating the proceeds to help Haiti so you can do a little good while buying something that looks delish. A very nice neighborhood experience and I plan on coming here often. read more

The good: The vegetable selection is diverse. The whole store is surprisingly multicultural for its tiny size. The people working here are always excellent and helpful, especially the cashiers and the people at the deli. The bad: They don't carry the cheap generic brand of anything. If you want some tomato soup, it's going to be some fancy organic local type. The same with hot dogs. They carry the best cuts of meat which works for steak but is less helpful for chicken (I'd go to the Target down the street instead for chicken or any type of sausage). Over the years I have always been very fond of this store- even going back to the days when they were about 1/2 block east on 53rd from their current location. I can remember going to the old spot with a shopping strategy- get in line upon arrival- since there was only one way to walk through the entire store and that way took you through the entire store- you could get in line immediately and as you made your way slowly through the line, you would still have easy access to everything in the store. It was a tiny space that was always packed with terrific produce and a lot of friendly Hyde Park-ers. I can remember the excitement when knowing that they were moving into a space that was probably about 10-20x the size of the old place- and better yet, was taking over for the awful Co-Op that once occupied that property. With the "new" location, they have really done a terrific job at bringing the personable, friendly experience back to grocery/produce shopping and coupled it with some of the best and freshest produce and deli items in all of Chicago. You still have the same staff who are helpful and friendly if you have questions, and this works particularly well if you are female and fairly young. I have seen the guys literally run to the back in order to look for fresh stuff that has come in and hasn't even been unpacked and brought out to the front yet, just at a chance of impressing an ambitious young lady who asks for something they may have...... One key thing to look for in a produce market- the turnover of items. This place does great business and the turnover here is staggering. Everything from simple produce items like the standard fruits and vegetables, all things seasonal, to not-so-standard items (large assortment of loose fresh herbs, chayote, Japanese eggplant, Indian eggplant, yucca, many different whole nuts, dried chilies, oyster and shitake mushrooms in large batches to be pulled by hand, and a ton of stuff I have never seen or heard of before that makes me want to explore my culinary curiosities). Their deli counter is equally impressive with Boar's Head being their staple supplier, but also with many in-house made items too (try their guacamole, or one of their many olive mixes, or even their canoles for example). With the larger space came many more items compared to the old days- and so you can practically shop for anything you need here. One hope for the future though- if they could somehow find a way to put in a really great quality butcher stand there instead of selling the prepackaged meat, but then again- this is a produce mart. Parking can be tough depending on the time of day you come, and has gotten worse simply due to the blockade along 51st, the large gaggle of police and secret service peops only 2 blocks away (someone named Obama lives within walking distance), and the fact that all traffic is directed down Woodlawn and through 53rd. No matter for me though- I live on 53rd and can walk there- so just another reason to leave my car behind and shop there to ensure fresh product any time I need it! Still, if you are looking for really good quality produce and deli items and want to check out Hyde Park- this is a great place! A lasting impression I have of this delectable darling is the words on the awning that hangs over the deli counter- and what you notice when you walk into the spacious location- "Welcome to our dream!" Really unique grocery store. Small but very interesting. A worthy selection of amazing fruits, berries, vegetables. This place always surprises with something unusual, such as Cotton Candy grapes, carambola, kumquat, kiwi berries and much more. There is always a large selection of fresh herbs, mushrooms, excellent pastries, very tasty bread. Prices are not high on average, many products are much cheaper than Jewel. A real gourmet shop! The market lover that I am (open-air or covered - they used to be the only places I was going to to buy my produce, meat and fish...sigh....) relentlessly went all over the city to find a good place to at least buy my fruits and veggies. North, West, South, suburbs, big and small, high and low - I searched everywhere. Nothing beats HPP. Their products are always super fresh, clean and cheap and I have yet to be disappointed. On top of a great selection of produce (among them - sage, morels, figs, and other hard-to-find treasures) they have a wonderful deli section (cold cuts and cheese of course, but also Italian cookies, desserts and much more) and quite a substantial international and gourmet products aisle. And you can order online!!!!!!!!! Who needs Stanley's or Whole Foods when you have HPP? Take a trip to my yard and discover for yourself. read more

I really like this place a lot. Since my breakup with Stanley's, I needed to move on. As I said, it was over and I needed to make it stick, no creeping back. My first visit to HPP, I was ecstatic. Everything was fresh, clean, well organized and well what you would want to buy. Oh happy day, I can buy a few things and they will still be edible in a couple of days. Not expired by the time the 10 p.m. news comes on. The big test, yes they have equal exchange coffee and plenty of it in clean bins on clean shelves. Is this a mirage? Not a mirage, I come back several more times, yes just as it was before. Everything fresh, neat, clean and well stocked. This is how fresh fruit and veggies are supposed to look. This place is a thing of beauty, I always buy more than I planned because it all looks so good. Did I mention the deli, and other specialty items. They have bread, pita, hummus, dairy, a selection of frozen items, canned goods and a small but nice selection of chicken, beef, fish, etc., regular and organic. If you live in Hyde Park, then you know this is the place to shop for produce! Village Foods, Treasure Island, and any other locale do not even come close to the quality of the goods for the price you pay. Not only that, but everyone that works there is friendly, attentive, and happy to help with any questions you may have! Of the many things HPP has to offer, for me, their salsa reigns supreme! I don't even bother buying salsa from anyone else, because HPP's is too good to beat! Now that they're in a bigger location, their inventory has increased, and they offer a wide range of ethnic and other specialty foods. HPP is the closest thing to a Trader Joe's Hyde Park will ever get. There are even some brands that HPP carries (such as Anne's pastas) that are also available at Trader Joes. There are a wide range of vegan, organic, and other environmentally/animal friendly products. As a Mexican, I am acutely aware that most of the staff at Hyde Park Produce are Hispanic, and to be perfectly honest, I think that's why this place is such a great success. Whether or not this is stereotypical of me against my ethnicity, I think the passion and love for great produce and service, and the welcoming attitude that hits you from the minute you walk into HPP is directly related to the people that work there. Maybe I'm wrong, but either way, there's no where else I'd rather go in Hyde Park (and maybe in the city) for my produce. read more

This place made my weekend! Having only been shopping on 55th's Treasure Island and Open Produce, I really wanted to check out what Hyde Park Produce offers. Initially, I didn't even go in with a basket. I thought to myself I am just going to browse. However, as soon as I got in, I saw the $2.99/ lb Rainier cherries and the $1.49 for a 16oz. fresh organic strawberries. I had to read and re-read the signs to make sure I was reading correctly. I even waived down a customer service person to help me read the signs. So yes, things are cheap here. I quickly grabbed a basket thinking that I may only walk away with a few things. As I continued down the aisles, I found that the one drink that I have been looking for all summer last year in Maryland. The blueberry soda. OMG! This place carries it. I grabbed the last bottle and heard that they will stock it up again soon. So excited! So, yes this place offers really unique things. Another product that I got was the pink lady apple juice. I love pink lady apples, so we'll see how I like this drink. The deli/ cheese section is also very good. They have a good nice selection. Hands down, my favorite guac of all time. The pico de gallo is solid as well. I think they make the guacamole fresh everyday here, and oooo it is a guilty pleasure! SO GOOD. must try it! Ah I love the produce prices at HPP! The produce is consistently fresh and CHEAP! Once I spent like 8 dollars and walked away with two FULL bags of produce. Also, often their organic produce is similarly priced to their regular produce! Alas, the packaged section is NOT cheap and is full of organic/gluten-free/natural expensive things. So I mostly stick to the produce section. The staff is also really friendly and helpful (unlike Village Foods!) And my favorite part is the french nuns on the weekends! They have a wonderful assortment of madeleines, fruit tarts (my personal fave), large fruit tarts (apricot tart was a hit with my friends), apple bread, etc. But they are only there on the weekends (including Fri). You should do just like that Dutch girl who gets drowned in Lethal Weapon 2 and shop here every day. But not because you never know what you'll be hungry for, but because there's always SOMEthing ridiculously cheap. They must have the Glengarry leads on vegetation, because I was able to buy packages of organic raspberries for a dollar in the dead of winter. This is a great store for people who know how to cook, because they focus on selling actual food -- a huge selection of vegetables (opa? daikon? bulk herbs?), bread, milk, cheese, some meat. You should probably stick with Village Foods if you're more of a Hot Pockets person though. read more
