Amazing place! Great teachers and so many fun classes I want to try!…read more Unlike so many people I know, I never took dance growing up, However I have always enjoyed movement and wished I could dance actual steps. All that to say I was super intimidated to take the plunge now, in my late 30s. I started with a Saturday afternoon line dancing workshop. I was immediately put at ease by the friendliness and the diversity of ages, sizes, and shapes of people that I found taking the class with me. After my wonderful experience at the workshop, I signed up for beginning modern jazz. Tracey Durbin is an amazing teacher! I was up-front with her about my lack of experience and nervousness. She put me at ease by reminding me that everyone is here to have fun, period. I have now signed up for my second session and I have no plans to stop!

There aren't may dance classes in Durham for adults. That's what drew me to Ninth Street Dance. I…read moregrew up dancing and continued performing in college. When I graduated, it was hard to find a dance studio to take lessons. Ninth Street Dances offers classes in a variety of styles, techniques, and flavors. You can take a dance technique class or a movement/fitness class. I've taken an eight-week hour-long modern and contemporary. I've also taken the dancehall workshop (one three-hour class) which was high-energy and a lot of fun. Most of the adult classes were at night, which was great to attend after work. (This was before COVID-19, of course.) Now classes are virtual. I recently signed up for a virtual mediation class that will take place for four weeks during my lunch break -- perfect while I'm working from home. Other classes offered -- 90's cardio funk, tap, ballet, bhangra, twerk, hip hop, afrobeat and so many more! Here's the link to the class schedule: https://ninthstreetdance.com/classes/

I have physical disabilities and took dance for many years growing up, but it can be hard to find an inclusive experience as an adult. Davis Dance Company is just that. I love their musical theater happy hour classes, and the drop in options they have without committing to a regular class schedule. I have always felt welcome, and the vibes have always been positive. I'm making it a goal to go more regularly in the new year, and I recommend anyone who is curious about dance or wants to let their creative side shine, check it out!

My daughter has been doing the musical theater class "Lights, Camera, Action!" with a YouTube video of their choreographed dance to a different musical each week. The teachers go above and beyond and really make everyone feel comfortable as they are. Easily accessible off the highway, and they have Boozy Ballet and Tipsy Tap classes I'm dying to try! Truly can't say enough about the teachers (recent alums from Eastern Carolina and sisters!). They're so sweet and do a great job with all of their classes. I can't wait to see them take off once the world discovers this gem of a studio!

The theater seats around 600 people. Accessible seating is located at the top of the venue. There are stairs to get down to the other rows. They are on the steep side and the heights of the steps are uneven but there are handrails on the two sides. I sat in the front row so I'd assume the slope makes all the rows have a good view as you shouldn't be looking at heads. I'd recommend checking the sports schedules before buying a ticket with the box office as if there is an event you cannot park in the nearby garage but need to park in a lot further away which makes finding the venue harder if you are not familiar with Duke's West Campus.

Parking is at a nearby garage. Allow plenty of time for parking, especially if other things are happening on campus. Seating in the theater is quite steep. There's a wide aisle that goes down the middle with no handrails, then more narrow aisles on each side that have handrails. Steps are uneven and you do have to be careful. Be careful where your seats are if you have special needs. We had front row seats, so exiting for the restroom meant climbing back up those stairs.
