I wish I could give them 0 stars for ruining our trip. I booked an OBX house that they cancelled a week or so before arrival because of a sale of the property. They tried to charge me more for a replacement house, but that was in violation of North Carolina's Vacation Rental Act. When I cited the law they gave me another place at the same price. Unfortunately the new place was awful. It hadn't been used in months and everything was covered in a layer of dust. Opening the windows unleashed blasts of dust because the blinds and curtains were so filthy. There were no cleaning products so we went and bought some but could not get it clean enough to stay. The bunk bed room was so dusty that I didn't let my child with allergies stay in there because the windows didn't open. There was also a bunch of trash left outside the property, a band-aid in the shower, a cockroach in the bathroom sink, I could go on. But the biggest problem was the dust. It was literally hanging from the ceiling of the whole house - below is a photo from the ceiling over the master bedroom. We found another place to stay with another company and what a world of difference. Even though we only stayed a few days out of the 14 we booked, Carolina kept almost half of my money! They initially told us the deposit would come later (on the phone twice!) and then when it never came, they said they already refunded it. Stay away! read more

We had no problem dealing with the office. We picked up keys for our rental at 112 e. Becker st on Saturday afternoon July 8. Got to the rental about 20 minutes later and we realized the housekeeper had not cleaned the bathrooms. Crap in the toilet bowl, disgusting to say the least. We were told we would be charged an extra fee for the housekeeper to come back later in the week. No thanks! Overall, the unit was nice but cleanliness is next to godliness with me. I'm not sure why any homeowner would allow such rude people to manage their property. I wouldn't recommend this OBX rental company to anyone visiting the area. We recently stayed at The Beach Barn (KH4111), in Kitty Hawk, NC. It was one of our most favorite OBX visits ever!!! Carolina Shores was easy to work with, had our rental clean on time & cleaned well, plus they offer the option to reserve the same location for the following year, same week - for a nominal deposit. We'll be back! This cute, little cottage is PERFECT!! Great location - close to everything; clean; decorated beautiful; comfortable furniture & beds; stocked kitchen; and THE VIEW!!! Loved sitting on the deck, enjoying our morning coffee & evening cocktails - and the dolphins entertained us almost daily. And our little dog lived it too!! Don't hesitate booking this home - we're already planning our return visit next year!!! read more

WARNING. I really wish I checked Yelp before slapping down over $5,200 for a week rental through this company. The outer banks property I rented owned by a NJ woman was badly neglected and presented fire and safety hazards. When contacted for corrective action, employees made false promises and even lied to me, making matters worse. When the manager got involved, it was only to attempt to bully me into going away. Sue Ann Lewis was rude and uninterested in anything other than making excuses. The dangerous grill wasn't removed until day 5 of our 7 day reservation, resulting in a fire hazard if a spark was nearby. The broken microwave door was never replaced, nor did anyone show up to clean the pool area and furniture in spite of repeated requests to have that resolved. No one came to repair or even examine the broken handrail to the pool steps. I hope the next guests aren't injured, but if they are this might help them in a lawsuit. I have attached a few photos to deflect any attempt Ms. Lewis might make to deny what she and this badly managed agency created or made worse. read more

I wish zero stars was an option for this review. Once we arrived at the property, we were informed by a good samaritan that there were issues the prior week at this home due to back up in the septic tank. The family prior to us left after just two days. We frantically called the office and we were assured that while there were issues with the septic tank that everything was taken care of and the home was safe for our family with 2 young children. Upon entering the home and after 4 flushes of the toilet, raw sewage bubbled up out of the only shower in home. We checked out the basement and then saw raw sewage flooding the basement. After multiple attempts to the emergency after hours line and the property manager, we were left to find ourselves a replacement house during the week of the 4th of July. Carolina Shores expected us to spend the night in the sewage infested house with our young children while they "sorted everything out in the morning". Book with this company if you don't mind having your vacation ruined. read more

I hoped not to have to write this letter but I'm going to tell you the whole story of this Fiasco of a rental. First we are two seniors in our 70s living from Social Security who scrimped and saved for a vacation on the Outer Banks With an Ocean View and a nice Cottage we searched diligently for months and found a cottage that was advertised as in excellent condition with great up water views. We called and spoke to a rental agent and was assured that we would love this Cottage and the great views that it offered of the Atlantic Ocean. We then paid thousands of dollars to reserve this property we proceeded to drive seven hours in very hot weather and was shocked when we arrived at this property. We were not able to even get in the driveway because there were several feet of sand blocking the entrance after hiking over this we found we could not get into the property as the door locks were rusted totally shut, We had to wait for maintenance people to come and break in the house so that we could enter, the locks were so rusted they could never be locked again and we're not replaced or fixed and we were told to bad. We then shocked to find that insulation was hanging from the ceiling on the lower level offering a terrible health hazard and making that level unusable for anything, the beach equipment that we were promised was a pile of broken Styrofoam nothing usable. The inside of the house appeared not to have been cleaned in years dishes and pans were left with food and were unusable. We found trying to even get to the beach was extremely hard because of the sand which was piled up around the cottage and not been cleaned for a very long time made walking Extremely difficult. We then proceeded around the cottage and said well at least we'll have the water view that was promised and found that also was a lie, we could see no ocean, no surf, no birds, no waves, no people walking on the beach, nothing there was no few of the beach whatsoever. We then ask for partial refund, not all of our money back just some of it for all of this and the result was I have been accused being a conman and scammer (for wanting a partial refund that is more than deserved) because of my dissatisfaction. read more

I rented a property on the Outer Banks that was advertised as semi Oceanfront with great alluring views. When we got to the property there were no views and the cottage was in deplorable condition. After driving seven hours we decided to stay even though it was not what we were told it would be. This is not the real problem though when I disputed the transaction on my Chase credit card the president of Carolina shores vacation rentals John Mignogna accused me of being a profesional conman and scammer. This is done irreparable damage to my reputation with Chase and who knows who else. I'm 72 years old and have impeccable references and no legal violations ever. I have never made a complaint about any other transaction and can supply detail information on this. I believe there is no question as to the slander from this gentleman and would like an apology and if there was a settlement no problem with the attorney having whatever they feel is fair. read more

Unfortunately have to agree with the other reviewers. Carolina Shores exhibits questionable tactics. First up, cable box was broken, toilet and sink were clogged. Second, none of the sheets fit the mattresses they were supposed to fit. Finally, there is a beach renovation occurring and we are not allowed on the beach. We paid $5000 to be right on the beach because one of our family members is 83 and can't walk for very long. We are banned from our own private beach! Carolina Shores was extremely dodgy about this project, stating it "probably won't affect" us. Large Caterpillars have been outside the house making noise and marring the beauty of the shore. We were informed they are supposed to work 24/7 but that has not been the case - at the current rate, they will not finish during our vacation. read more

First time renting through Carolina Shores- I found their realty through an OBX vacation booklet. Rented through them because they offered a house on the same block as my nephew's rental. Good staff. They also provide you with a "goody bag" upon check-in with Frisbee, toilet paper, paper towel roll, single use laundry detergent and single use dishwashing detergent. The house we rented was described accurately, including previous renters testimonials. Would rent the house (Wallis) again and would rent through Carolina Shores again. read more

Terrible vacation rental company with unfair business practices. Management was extremely poor and unprofessional. Our party had traveled 6 hours to begin a lease for a property we had rented several weeks back through Carolina Shores. When we arrived we were not allowed to begin our lease due to discriminatory subliminal language within the lease. Carolina Shores was not willing to reimburse what we already paid for the week nor were they willing to cooperate in resolving the situation. I advise anyone who enters an agreement with this company to have a lawyer carefully examine the lease and receive extremely DETAILED information in writing before ever signing. I and my party will not be doing business with them again. Some unfair items to take notice from in the lease: Carolina Shores will only handle legal disputes with their leasing from lawyers within the Kitty Hawk, NC. Dear Carolina Shores Vacation Rentals, My family stayed at the rental property D131 Tim-Duck-Tu June 18 - June25th. We have some concerns we would like to address in regards to our stay. When we arrived all of the sheets and towels were in an unmarked laundry bag on the first floor inside the home. We had no idea those towels and sheets were dirty and used them for days. We found out they were DIRTY when the company came to pick up the dirty laundry and knocked on the door. It is UNSANITARY to use someone else's used sheets and towels not to mention GROSS. Towels can harbor bacteria like staph infection bacteria for weeks. We feel this was GROSS NEGLIGENCE to leave the clean laundry on the front porch in an unmarked bag and the dirty laundry inside the house as you walk in. We suggest that the cleaning company leave the clean towels and sheets inside the house and the dirty laundry bag on the porch not only does that make sense for the pick-up, but also for your renters. One of the children ended up with a rash on her arm and her leg during the week. We wonder if that had anything to do with the dirty, unsanitary sheets and towels from this rental property. We found "personal ADULT items" in the dresser drawer in the bedroom near the family room. We suggest the cleaning crew check the drawers upon cleaning. It would have been highly inappropriate for a child to find that! Drawers should be emptied and the cleaning crew should be checking that to make sure no trash is left behind or inappropriate things left. We are VERY Disappointed with that. Sunday we called the rental company to ask about beach parking. We were told we could walk the 1/2 mile walk with all our beach items and cross the main busy street to use the neighborhood beach path because the owner did not leave a parking pass for the renters to use. We noticed the parking spaces near the neighborhood path so we called the rental company again and spoke with Megan. We were told that the owner of the house did not pay for the renters to park at the beach access and we would need to find a public beach access parking lot. For two days we shuttled our family and beach items down to the path unloaded and drove the car back to the house and had one person walk back. It was less than ideal for going to the beach on a beach vacation. Then by chance while sitting on the sofa one of our family members saw a binder in a basket with a bunch of other papers. In the binder held valuable renters information including that there was NO PARKING PASS needed to park at beach access lot in the neighborhood with a detailed map. That sure made our beach vacation a lot better, but it would have been nice to have that information quickly. The rental company employees really need to know their properties or be willing to at least look up the details of the property while the renters are on the phone. We are positive the owner has given this important information to the company managing the property. Also that binder sure would have been helpful right away if it had been left on the kitchen table or counter, somewhere obvious. The backyard needs to be sprayed for bugs. We had several mosquito bites and ant bites during the week. We used spray and bracelet repellants and even bought some citronella candles. There is a large pest control problem at this house that NEEDS to be treated. The non-stick pans in the kitchen are scratched with what appears to be rust spots on them. It is a health risk to use pans with scratches like this. We went and bought a pan to use, but we are sure your future renters would appreciate the house having safe clean pans to use. We certainly would have rather used pans from the house instead of going and buying one. Despite the disappointing things listed above my family had a great vacation. We do plan on going back to OBX for our next vacation, but we feel that the next rental house probably should NOT be a Carolina Shores Property due to the MISS- INFORMATION AND NEGLIGENCE! In addition to the message from Mike H below; my group and I, (9 adults in their late twenties), recently rented a Vacation home with Carolina Shores. The experience up to arrival was seamless, however, upon attempting to move our group into the home the nightmare began. What was planned to be a relaxed reunion among friends and family on the beach, was quickly ended due to this organization making a flash judgement. We were immediately asked to remove all of our belongings from the establishment based on nothing other than their decision to act upon a loosely written clause in the lease that defined what is considered a "family". While that definition could lead to a whole different social issues argument, I will leave it at that and advise that all non traditional nuclear families beware. We peacefully agreed to vacate the premises; despite our lengthy drive and lack of place to stay, under the assumption that we would be reimbursed for the lack of services provided for the cost. This was not the case, and while we asked for reasoning, all we received was a comment of them not being "at liberty to say". We were lucky enough to find another Realtor that day that welcomed our group and had we had a wonderful experience with. Unlike Carolina Shores, I will be recommending them with 5 stars for their fast turnaround and willingness to accept all paying groups. read more

I have been renting on the OBX for many years and have never been disappointed until I used Carolina Shores Vacation Rentals. I placed a call to Carolina Shores the week before our arrival date asking if we could add the heat pool option at any time and they replied that was absolutely fine. Then, when we checked in and I asked for the pool to be heated the young woman checking us in said it could take 2-3 days to heat up and I should check the water first and that I could add the option at anytime during my stay. Yesterday, I called to have the heat turned on in the pool. The rental company took my payment and the pool maintenance company was actually here at the house and I asked them to turn on the heat. They replied no problem. In about an hour, I checked my emails and to my surprise, there was an email refunding the charge to heat the pool. No phone call. Just an email with no explanation. When I called Carolina Shores, I was told that the house did not have an option to heat the pool. So I pulled up the website and that option had mysteriously disappeared from the website. I looked on another realtors site and the heated pool option was listed for the house as it was originally on Carolina Shores website. So, I called the realtor back and they admitted that it was removed from the site per the owners request. I asked what can be done to rectify this situation as a major reason for renting this home at this time of year was for a heated pool. They replied the owner isn't willing to do anything. I then mentioned that 3 of the 4 bikes were not in working order. This then became the focus of the realtor. They did pick up the bikes and supposedly are bringing them back repaired tonight but this in no way makes up for the false advertisement on the house listing that clearly stated there was an option to have the pool heated. Additionally, the listing photos on the realtor's website includes a clear view of the ocean from the house. This turned out to be false as well. I recommend never using this shady company again. I gave this 2 stars because I want to rate this strictly on the property we stayed in and surrounding amenities. Our trip as a couple was AMAZING and the obx is absolutely stunning-- I got engaged on this trip so it was FANTASTIC! But....about the property: We stayed at the Grey Ghost the week of the 17th of September. It was across from the ocean and a BEAUTIFUL view! I thought the restaurant next door would be loud but with how close we were to the ocean but you could only hear the ocean, it was great. Upon arriving everything looked good- we got in late and it was dark so we sat out on the porch, nothing was noticeably broken except the side door (which I sent an email about and they came out to fix it!) When we woke up and saw it during the day it was pretty evident it needs a deep cleaning, and a little TLC. Windows are hard to open and some broken, trash all over the side and front porch area, A ton of screens blown out on the porch, huge roofing nails all over- I found my dog chewing on one!, oh- and there was absolutely NO toilet paper or any kind of small towel to even attempt to clean anything up. So we had to go to the store and get EVERYTHING. I thought for close to $1,100 I'd get like, a roll of TP? Needless to say we left a few things for the next people to "help get them started".... Also, the last day we were there (thank goodness because if I had to leave early due to this, I would be insanely angry), a huge rat ran across the kitchen and over my fiancés FEET! Eeek! Then we found he had eaten through the food we brought! It was just things like this over and over and on vacation, I really don't want to have to worry about nails and rats and just want to focus on the beach.... I will say we went out and bought cleaning supplies and I feel as though it's left NOW, nicer than when we came. Again, a deep cleaning isn't something I want to do on "vacation". Now, my fiancé and I are very "hippie dippy granola". We want to sit on a porch for a week strait and literally just sit there and hangout and watch- for that, this house was splendid. But things like the ones listed above makes me a little hesitant to rent from this company again because I feel like they really don't care. The location is prime- the house could be adorable- fix it up and put effort into your renters and I'm sure you could make a killing of a profit! Idk, I personally don't understand, but I felt I needed to let the public know a honest opinion about the company and house... I cannot stress enough how amazing this location is and how beautiful nature is around here--we already are talking about coming back to the obx next year :) **update after company response: Thank you so much for responding, we didn't realize it was owned by someone else trying to sell, so that makes a lot of sense. I wish I had read these reviews prior to renting through this company. Carolina Shores Vacation Rentals has horrendous customer service. Rented a small condo in February for late July vacation. Have been renting at OBX for over 20 years and never received such horrible customer service. Upon arrival, condo was filthy and had not been cleaned. Toilet had clearly not been cleaned, counter tops were dirty and had not been wiped down, something had rotted in the refrigerator and not been cleaned, and there was dog hair all over the comforter. While this is a "pet friendly" condo for "small dogs only", I don't expect to sleep in other people's dog hair. Received key at 4 and by the time we checked in, company was closed. They gave instructions for after hour emergency's but I did not think this was an emergency so I cleaned myself. The following day when I spoke with Housekeeping Manager Amanda, she was very helpful, however Property Manager Brenda called to inform me since I did not call the after hour emergency line, she could not help me. I requested a discount on the rental fee I paid to which she became argumentative stating she did not have money to "pay me." I simply requested some refund. She offered me a....pizza....yes a coupon for a pizza. Property was the worst I have ever stayed in however I realize that is on the owner, not the rental company. We rented My Three Sons N2306 for the week of July 22. BUYER BEWARE!! Several of the sheets were torn and tattered, some had long hairs on them, some didn't fit correctly. The doors on the upper level didn't work/didn't lock. When we arrived the floor on the lower/entry level was sandy. There are coffee stains on the stairs and in the upper bedroom. There was cooked egg smeared on the window casing in the kitchen. Bugs had been killed on windows and doors and not wiped off. The shower doors in the shared bathroom on the middle level were molded and gross. I have photos of all of this. This was the first time renting a place on the OBX that sheets were left in a box on the lower level for all the bedrooms and you had to lug it all up and make your own bed. Then when the week was over you had to put them all back in the box on the lower level. You were told in the exiting directions that before leaving the floors had to be swept and the carpets vacuumed. I believe that you should leave a rental unit in good condition when you vacate but to be asked to vacuum?? I made 2 calls to the company while there w/no return call. The pool was looked at one day while we were there. I can assure you we will never rent from this company again. BUYER BEWARE!!! read more

We recently stayed in a beach rental managed by Carolina Shores Vacation rentals. Our experience with Carolina Shores VR was fine. They accommodated my 'short-notice" request; but told us it was up to the owner when we could enter the property. We asked to enter early, but were told we could not enter before 4:00 p.m.-----on a Sunday. Exhausted, we got the keys and opened the door. First impressions were great. Clean, orderly, uncluttered. The longer we stayed the more we uncovered. Pots and pans that seriously need replacing. A yard so choked with weeds and unkempt we couldn't get to the outside shower. No sheets, towels, washcloths, toilet paper, soap. None of this would have been a problem had we known that we needed to order all of it. FOR AN ADDITIONAL $100. The best part? They had washing machine and dryer fitted with coin slots that took quarters---like a Laundromat! Only one electrical plug worked in the master bedroom, two in the other two bedrooms---no lights at all for the master bath. Finally, on check-out day I went to adjust the water direction on the shower in the bathroom that had light and it popped off in my hand. We ran to Lowes and replaced it. Yuck! Never again. So disappointed with Carolina Shores Vacation Rentals. On our 2nd day of vacation, I found an open container of rat poison pebbles inside the floor level kitchen cabinet of our vacation rental. Good thing I found this and not our 2 young children! There were other minor things wrong with the unit like a broken screendoor, broken showerhead faucet, and disgusting / dirty carpet throughout house but the rat poison was unacceptable. I went down to the office to request a pro-rated refund so we could finish our vacation somewhere else but they refused. They didn't take responsibility for this complaint at all - trying to blame it on their pest control service, their cleaners, the condo association - nevermind that it's their name on the sign and on the contract. They said well we have 200+ properties to look out for. I don't care about the 200+, I care about the ONE that I paid good money to spend a week in with my children. They simply sent somebody out to take out the rat poison and told me that there was no evidence of rats in the unit. When my husband, who is away at Army training for a deployment and unable to be on vacation with us called them, they told him that I had overexaggerated everything. What?! Even the maintenance guy (who was great) that came to get the rat poison out (and fix the screendoor and showerhead) agreed the carpet looked dirty and needed a cleaning. Apparently the customer is not only wrong, she overexaggerates too. STAY AWAY from Carolina Shores Vacation Rentals. They only care about money and contracts - not their customers or doing the right thing. read more
