This restaurant was right across from my hotel so an easy walk. It was very popular and full every night when we walked by. We stopped by toward the beginning of happy hour. Aperol Spritz were standard but a good price during happy hour. The the steak was overcooked so I sent it back. The refire came back weirdly sliced down the middle but through the thin edge, somewhat hard to explain. It was slightly better. The bread here was the hardest bread I had during my whole trip. Also the creme brulee was not fully bruleed so there was raw sugar at the top. This is a place I would come to for drinks but don't think I would get food here again. read more

Outstanding food and really nice people running this family-run restaurant . This is a small bistro style café right in the busy center of Paris. We loved the food and wine, would definitely highly recommend it as a casual atmosphere place to hang out. It is right next to many of the hotels and the large shopping malls in the 1st Arrondissement. We went during a quieter time of day, but it was also very busy at night, when they have a happy hour. We returned back to the area near our apartment after the Seine Cruise. It was around 11 pm. A couple of restaurants were no longer serving food. By chance, we stumbled by the Carpe Diem cafe and we were thrilled they were still serving food. I'll be honest--at first glance, I didn't have high expectations. I was just ready to drink wine and eat. However, the servers were extremely friendly and accommodating. The drinks (especially the wine) were reasonably priced. And the dishes were so delicious! We all ate everything up. Even my youngest (who is normally picky) likes the food. I'm just bummed we found this place on our last night in Paris. We will return when we visit Paris again. I was in town on business and looking for a place for a safe solo dinner near my hotel. This had good reviews so thought I would try it. They seated me in a corner in the back facing a wall so I moved my chair to at least face the restaurant. Service was very slow and I had to ask for a menu (scan code) twice. Food was ok. French onion soup was nice, pasta with salmon ok. Creme brûlée was ok as well but had some black burned spots on crust. The biggest issue I had was they asked for a cash tip. Now, I have traveled enough around the world to know that a tip is typically given for exceptional service in France. I did not get that. So he repeated again and said "cash tip". I told him I didn't have cash. He said "American cash". This was making me very uncomfortable so as he watched I put a $10 USD out. Dinner was over two hours, I did not feel welcome and the pressure for tipping, did not make things pleasant for me. Would not ever go back. read more

Made this our first meal in Paris and oh my goodness were the star ratings off. Pickled olives and fresh sliced baguette as soon as you sit down. Ordered the Poelee de St. Jacques et champignons couche (Pan-fried scallops with mushrooms) as our starter. It was cooked to perfection. For my entree, I chose the Magret de canard roti aux raisins, topinambours et champignons (Breast of duck with raisins, Jerusalem artichokes, and mushrooms). What a dish! So flavorful and delicious. My husband had the Souris d'agneau aux figues et amandes (Lamb shank with figs and almond). I'm not usually a fan of lamb, but it was fall-off-the-bone-tender with very little gaminess. The flavor combination was fantastic- best lamb shank I've ever tasted. We finished the meal with the Mousse au chocolate a discretion (Chocolate mousse has discretion). They served it out of a huge metal mixing bowl. It was rich and thick as if bits of chocolate cake had been mixed into it. Mouth watering as I write this. The ambience was candle-lit and romantic. The service was great. Helpful when needed, but they don't bother or rush you. 'Tis the European way. I was expecting a $100 tab with the decadence we were served. We had beer and wine as well, but the bill came out to 67 Euro. Tax included with no gratuity?! What a deal!!! Worried the Carpe Diem Cafe may have set the bar too high for our first meal in Paris, but if it has, we'll definitely be back! IMHO, this was not a four star restaurant as rated by Yelp, but five solid stars all the way. read more

During our weeklong Parisian stay, this place was the most delicious, beautiful and romantic place. Being bilingual in Spanish and English, and having studied French in school, I like to think I speak enough to barely get my point across. And, I like to think it impresses my boyfriend when I can order and carry on a conversation in French. Anyways, at the end of an extremely long day, my French goes to ish. Carpe Diem is a beautiful cafe. The atmosphere at night is to die for - candles on every table and a great crowd of locals. The hosts and bartender are ultra-friendly. We speak very little French and they were able to help us with the menu and even recommend other things to do in the area. Like most Parisian establishments, the kitchen doesn't open until 7:30 p.m. Come in early and enjoy a few glasses of wine - the staff is knowledgeable and paired me with a new favorite! My vegetarian salad was fresh and tasty and my S.O. enjoyed her perfectly cooked beef tournedos. Save room for the all-you-can-eat chocolate mousse! read more

I was a little incredulous about how good this could be based on what I saw from the outside. It doesn't look like much from out there. But go inside. I promise, it's worth it. Our family of 4 enjoyed everything about this restaurant. The food was well prepared and delicious & the staff were kind and helpful. One of my favorite restaurants in Paris. The elixir 2 cocktail is light and refreshing- perfect for warm summer evenings. We had the scallops with mushrooms and arugula for a starter, which was perfectly done. Both entrees we ordered were bursting with flavor. This was our haven on our last rainy night in Paris. We sat at a window table with a lit candle. The atmosphere was sultry and romantic. And the food doesn't disappoint either. Our hosts were friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our meal without a worry or rush. There was great live music, and a buzz of other Parisians dining with us! The bartender, Xavier, spoke perfect English and suggested the cheeseburger (which I had with goat cheese on top - to die for), and the grilled Brie and honey salad (fantastic). We finished dinner with some raspberry sorbet. We had a great time chatting with Xavier and thoroughly enjoyed our food. In the end, we had two entrées, a few beers, and raspberry sorbet. The total came to around €45 - totally affordable for Paris and a great deal for the amount of food. We'd highly recommend Carpe Diem. Loud music and a bad table Was there on a Friday, so perhaps not a good day to judge. But our table was in the passageway of the waiters, close to the exit (=draft), and the music was too loud to be able to carry on a decent conversation with my companions. When I go out for dinner I appreciate to be able to talk with my friends, after 22 I'm perfectly ok if the volume is turned up, but at dinner time I do not see the purpose. Unless of course you don't want to talk with each other, than this is the place you want to be at. The meat dishes are all very good, the salads actually not that good (typical cheap-to-make-without-an-effort-Parisian-café-salad), waiters were too busy to take good care of their clients.
