We stayed in the bottom floor apartment as it has a full kitchen and since we were here more than a couple of nights, we decided we needed a place to cook up lunches and dinners. It's a great space with an exterior entrance. We quite enjoyed our stay and the innkeeper Richard. He was attentive, informative and very welcoming. Whenever we plan to return and visit our daughter, we will be back to stay at the Alexander Mansion and have the classic breakfast ice cream sundae. Awesome place.

The Joseph Fugina House has a main floor that you can rent, complete with two bedrooms, a living room, dining room and kitchen. Upstairs, there are three separate rooms that can be rented. They each have their own bathroom, with a shared kitchen upstairs and a shared living room downstairs. I would highly recommend looking that their website, as the photos really show how beautiful this space is. They also rent out the Prairie School House just down the street. That's a full house (no separate rooms for rent). The renovators and designers did an incredible job. Walking into the Joseph Fugina House is like stepping into a Pottery Barn or Pier 1 photo shoot. Great attention has been paid to details. Our room in the Joseph Fugina House had wonderful windows that let in a lot of light and overlooked the Mississippi River. There was also a small patio with two chairs where you could sit outside and enjoy the view. Each room has a Keurig coffee maker. The proprietors even restocked us with some Chai tea and decaff which my wife asked for! We loved our stay and would absolutely, without question, stay here again. The location is great. You can walk to town to enjoy the shops and restaurants. Guests can enjoy a 10 percent discount at The Golden Frog, a bar and grill located in downtown Fountain City. The only minor negatives would be: trains are passing by across the street about every 15 minutes, so if you're a light sleeper or can't stand that noise, you may want to go elsewhere. Also, the water was slow to get warm in the bathroom, and when it did, it didn't get real warm. We appreciated having access to a full kitchen - the ceramic dishes, real silverware, a fridge, etc. Again, the decorating was amazing. I hesitate to speak too glowingly about the place for fear that the next time we want to return, it will be booked.

Trains run alongside the river quite frequently, but didn't wake us up because the doors and windows must be new and well-sealed. The hosts let you come and go as you please, and are welcoming and willing to talk about the area and things to do there. Breakfast was AOK. While you're in the neighborhood, check out the bike trails (the local bike store, Blue Heron, has maps and sells trail passes). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a good public beach (that we knew of), so we had to trespass to take a dip (oops!). Sullivan's Supper Club is within a mile of the B&B and worth a jaunt for dinner, but the Trempealeau Hotel is within shorter walking distance and is open late.

Our wedding happened to be the same weekend as October-fest in Lacrosse, which was a problem…read morebecause there were no places for our guests to stay. We called around trying to put rooms on hold and Clark House was one of the places that let us put rooms on HOLD. No one ended up staying there. A week after our wedding we were going through our bank account and noticed a $350 charge from Clark House. They charged us the full price of all three rooms, and didn't bother telling us they were charging us or even giving us a receipt. We called them to say "Hey, what's up?" and the woman would not even listen and said we had RESERVED those rooms and never showed. She said we even owed her more money then what they even charged us because they had to buy breakfast and hire a maid. ( I'm thinking, why pay your maid if she didn't do any work and why not just take the breakfast back?) She also informed us that there would be no refund. We were about to contact the Better Business Bureau when our wedding planner made one final call to Clark House and demanded some of our money back. We haven't gotten the check yet but they told us we would be getting HALF of our money back.
