Dr. Kramer has been awesome! Had a chronic toe/foot problem that he fixed by fusing the joint. I am in my second month of recovery and it's feeling great. Several of my other physical discomforts are also improving as I'm recovering from the surgery. Who knew that a toe could have such a big impact on the entire body. Yessica has also been great with all the appointments, communications and information. I am pleased to write a review on Dr. Zachary Kramer, DPM, Doctor of Podiatric Medicine at Carriero Foot and Ankle, Inc., in the Scripps Encinitas Hospital medical center area. I never felt more comfortable talking about my surgery needs for the Morton's Neuroma in my left foot. I was in extreme pain, and it was limiting my walking ability. I searched extensively for someone I could trust. I made the correct decision. I was very impressed with his in-office discussions with me about the surgery and the after-effects of the surgery. Dr. Kramer makes you feel understood and empathizes with the patient's pain. Dr. Kramer's excellent surgical skills had me back on my feet in a very short time. This is my 9 month update. I have been hiking and biking the same distances as before the osteoarthritis affected my foot. This update is overdue, as I was pretty much back to all activities by 3 1/2 to 4 months. When is the last time you left a doctor's office with a smile on your face? Lou Gilles put one on mine, not once, but twice! I have heel spurs and the one on my left foot got extremely nasty. He sent me to physical therapy, which made a world of difference. But three weeks later, my heel still hurt; so much so, that I groveled for the cortisone shot that I refused the first visit. I was terrified of that shot! I'd had one 15 years ago, and you could hear the screams into the next state. Well, Dr. G's shot was a 3 out of 10 on the pain meter. I cried with relief. He was so kind. Oh, and he sent me to Amazon for new orthotic inserts as opposed to the 'custom-made, because-only-these-will-do-the-trick' $350 jobs that his predecessors sold me. Got in the same day I called for a toe fracture. Dr. Gilles explained everything I needed to do, and not do, in a thorough and methodical manner.. He spelled out the treatment plan. Dr. Gilles is the best doctor I have ever had in my 70 years! He explains the problem with the models in the office. He has a surgery as a last resort mentality and he listens and takes his time with you. He explained all my treatment options, how to apply the treatment and then wrote it all down for me and printed it out! What doctor does that? I usually leave an office thinking, "What did he say". Dr. Gilles writes down your problem, the treatment and even went on Amazon and printed out the orthotic insert he recommends after he showed me several in his office and had me feel them and together we decided which one I might like best, but would do the job. This review is based on 2 visits to Carriero Foot and Ankle. My visit started with a bad impression. I was told that I would need imaging before my appointment and an order would be placed at the imaging lab in the adjacent building. When I arrived at the imaging lab, there was no work order submitted from the doctor's office. I waited 45 minutes before my x-rays were taken as they waited for the order to be submitted. As far the the visit went, I spent most of the visit with an intern because Dr. Kramer was with another patient. Dr. Kramer only spent a few minutes with me and couldn't provide a diagnosis for my foot pain. I was given some stretching and icing instructions for plantar fasciitis. After a few months passed, I was still experiencing similar, but increased pain so I returned for a follow-up visit. Once again, they failed to submit my order to the lab for x-rays, so I had to wait while the order was submitted. Dr. Kramer wasn't able to provide any explanation for my issue and suggested an MRI that his front desk would initiate. I was told I would be contacted by the MRI office in the next few days. I haven't been contacted by either the MRI office or Carriero since my visit that was about 2 months ago and there's been no pre-authorization submitted to my insurance, so basically nothing was done. At this point, I'm looking elsewhere for care. On a positive note, Dr. Kramer was very personable. read more

First appt Friday w_ Drs Gilles and Dr Reed(sorry spelling) . Worst rude office check-in-out ever experienced. Great compassionate Drs. I met Dr Carriea 20 yrs ago & he was a great surgeon so I chose his practice. Dr Gilles suggested a toe amputation. Checking out I would schedule for a toe amputee & receptionist replied (not scheduling anything w/out going threw me & getting cleared threw your primary) I explained I just got shocking news and why was she treating me like this? She explained I was holding up the imaginary line of people. Everyone was sitting down reading a magazine, No one was standing waiting behind me. There are 2 many good compassionate people out there who need a job. Why is she so secure In her job to treat people like dirt? I need to get 2nd opinion if I have time to. Even though I know she is not doing the surgery and I love the Drs, we all know how difficult it can be to making appts. (especially now) w a receptionist who hates you. Wish me luck! read more

Dr. Gilles is the best. I went to him a few days ago with a badly ingrown toenail which I knew must be removed. He was gentle, caring, and made sure my toe was completely numb before he removed the toenail very gently and quickly. Dr. Gilles is a very nice man. A true gentleman who cares about his patients and will take the time with them to do whatever is necessary while telling them what he is doing and why. A very calming personality. Visited Dr Carriero several times for steroid injections into my Morton's Neuroma. Went well each time with relief but finally decided to have the neuroma removed by Dr. Carriero surgically. Dr. Carrirero is Thee most professional an personable and down-to-earth specialist out there. He is friendly, PATIENT doctor who took care of my daughter's condition beautifully unfortunately she needed minor surgery. He is so kind and his office staff is super kind and efficient. After we knew her problem could not be fixed at the office, the staff was ON IT! They had her scheduledin for surgery within a week; insurance no prob. Most of all, though, if you need to see a podiatrist, he is the man to take care of you. Before surgery, he visited us and made her as calm as she could as well as the anesthesiologist. they knew she was scared and they tried to make her as comfy as possible. As parents, it's always upsetting to see your child go through surgery with anesthesia. She was so scared and as parents we just wanted to be me or dad and be over with. Dr. Carriero did the job and came out to the waiting room and explained to us what happened in surgery and gave us piece of mind and comfort and also gave us his cell phone in case!!! Nice. Dr Carriero is the man!!! If you need foot surgery in San Diego he is THE surgeon you want. I completely shattered my heel in a paragliding crash and he put me back together. After 12 screws and ONLY 6 weeks I was full weight bearing and walking again. Google "calcaneal fracture recovery time" and you will find that recovery does not happen this quickly. I am a very athletic and healthy 28 yr old, but the #1 factor in the outcome of this injury is how well the surgery is performed. Immediately after I woke up from anesthesia he stopped by and told me it went perfect, and boy was he right. There is a reason so many professional athletes have signed pictures around his office, because he is the best guy to put you back together when you're broken. On top of earning a 5 star review for performance in the operation, he gets bonus points for quality of pre-op and post-op care. He briefed me with everything I needed to know prior to surgery, stopped by just to say hi before the anesthesiologist put me under, swung by again as soon as I woke up, gave me his personal cell before I was discharged in case I had any urgent questions, and met with me weekly for the first month, and every three weeks afterwards. As a fellow surfer who had also broken his heel, he was really easy to relate to and has a great personality. I cannot recommend him enough if you are unfortunate enough to require his services. read more
