My 1st question was "has this surgery changed in 30 plus years? AND told him my story", his reply was "no, but you will not be in that kind of pain, if much at all"! Max 2 weeks in a boot and then back into shoes. Well, I wanted to believe him but really didn't. I have had a number of surgeries in my 70 years, and this is the only one I remember like it was yesterday. I knew I had to proceed, low and behold I don't even think I took 1 pain pill. In a week I told him I was ready to get back to my life and he said, "not so fast, you need to wear the boot at least another week, so you don't mess up what I did". Oh darn! I did and have never had a problem since. He also saw my left foot, as it too had a big bunion, but said, "until you are in pain", let's leave it alone. 3 years later, I am now in pain (it's not a pain you forget). I went to see Dr. Berenter and said it's time. He x-rays my foot and says, let's book it. I am going in next week for my surgery and not concerned a bit because I know he is the best and have referred many people to him in my senior community. The only thing that would be better is if his office was up in our neck of the woods. LOL

Then they called me a couple of months later and said the charge had not gone through and they were going to charge me again. Later when I checked my statements, I realized that they had charge me twice. I have been unable to get this resolved even with hours on the phone with them and my credit card company. BTW the doctor is knowledgeable, but she didn't even examine my foot aside from a glance and reading the notes her assistant made after talking with me. Another doctor thought that she missed a tendon tear on my MRI, so I'm not sure I would recommend her even without all the billing problems.

When we tried to follow up with questions and concerns, the office did not return our calls for over a week. When we finally received a response, we were told that my mother-in-law had "trust issues" and that Dr. Patel would not continue working with her. This was extremely unprofessional and upsetting, especially for someone who was simply seeking clarity and reassurance about her health. Ironically, we are now grateful that the relationship ended, because we found another doctor who took the time to properly evaluate her MRI, said surgery was not necessary, provided injections, and my mother-in-law is now doing great and feeling significantly better. Every patient deserves to be heard, respected, and given options -- not dismissed or labeled for asking questions. Based on our experience, we would not recommend Dr. Patel.

If you're not familiar with Scripps Health, you should know that several providers are associated with, but not directly part of Scripps Health. It can be hard to figure out who's who and where. The agents at Scripps seem to favor their own; I didn't love that part. The care itself was good quality, though. Other than the one issue, I felt that people were trying to help.

There was quite a bit of pain, and we had never talked about handling pain before the procedure. In follow up visits, he spent less than one minute with me, and gave me incorrect information about wound care. (Cover it with betadine solution and cover it with an elastic bandage.) The betadine trick caused the bandage to pull off the scab with the bandage. It is now March, and my foot is still painful. The dermatologist found that Dr. Berenter left in 2 stitches, which my toe considered foreign objects. Avoid this guy. I wish I'd never gone.

The surgery went very well he put my bones together with a plate and now 3 months after, the bones have healed very well and the fracture line is barely visible. I had a comminuted intraarticular distal radius fracture which he attached together with a titanium plate. I think he is the best and if you are in his care then I consider you very lucky! I will update as time goes on, but for now everything is great and I credit it to how well the surgery went and his professionalism and expertise. I also am very pleased with his staff and the surgery center where the surgery was performed.
