Lots of interesting items on the inside and the grounds and views from where the museum sits is worth the stop in. A small hallway is bordered by glass walls showing you the inside of the home as it was during the mining days. Clearly a low budget museum, but there was plenty of information and photographs on the walls to give you a good background on the town and it's buildings. A box at the end is available for donations, especially if you take maps and pamphlet information before leaving.

Of course the White Sands Missile Range is huge. It's beyond huge. It's massive. We got through the…read moregate at 9:30am (after waiting two hours in the queue) and didn't get to Ground Zero for a half hour. That's 30 minutes of driving in the military base at 30-40 mph. And we didn't even get to the *center* of the Missile Range! WSMR opens twice a year for tourists to visit the Ground Zero site under highly controlled and secure conditions. You'll need to show ID at the gate and you can't bring alcohol, weapons or drugs. The guards (yes, actual Army personnel) will ask. And you don't want to mess around or joke. I've reviewed the Trinity Site separately. This review is just for the WSMR which is secure, professional and yes, gigantic. I'll need to come back when it's not Open House day to tour the museum. I think Smokey is one of the few real heroes out there, who have made their way into pop culture. I also think that everyone has had a Smokey the bear t-shirt at some point in their life, maybe a hat? Coming here, I learned about the origin of fire towers and controlled fires. There is reference to firefighters and firefighting, so this may also pass as a fire fighter museum. But the real reason I came here was to admire and look at the memorabilia of Smokey the bear. I really enjoyed seeing all the toys and items collected by the museum. I am really happy to have made it here.

Nice short video to give you some insight into what happened during the days of the activity at the Fort. Some of the buildings are being renovated to help the structure and preserve what damage was done due to time but that doesn't make the area less amazing. We were there on a Saturday at the beginning of July and arrived to find the museum closed already. It was about 3 pm. After walking up we noticed their hours sign said "Saturday 10-??, Sunday 12-?? We generally leave when there are no visitors". It literally said that (see my photo added to this review). I guess that's small town for you but I can't see how the town expects to survive on tourism when the buildings aren't open when they say they will be- online I found many areas that said the museum would be open until 4 pm. We were really sad because it looked like a very interesting building to visit.
