Stanton, who was killed in a skirmish with the Apaches, Fort Stanton was built in 1855 by soldiers of the 1st Dragoon and the 3rd and 8th Infantry Regiments to serve as a base of operations against the Mescalero Apache Indians. It served as a military fortification through 1896. Built of local stone, the sturdy 1855 buildings have lasted to this day. The Fort was named for Captain Henry W. Stanton, killed fighting the Apaches in 1855 near present day Mayhill. Troops marched out from the Fort to search for and fight the Mescalero Indians during numerous campaigns from 1855 until the 1880's. One of the best preserved forts in America from that Era. Then passed by the cemetery and up to Mt. Serra Blanca reaching 10,090 ft. Beautiful scenery. Worth the trip!

I think Smokey is one of the few real heroes out there, who have made their way into pop culture. I also think that everyone has had a Smokey the bear t-shirt at some point in their life, maybe a hat? Coming here, I learned about the origin of fire towers and controlled fires. There is reference to firefighters and firefighting, so this may also pass as a fire fighter museum. But the real reason I came here was to admire and look at the memorabilia of Smokey the bear. I really enjoyed seeing all the toys and items collected by the museum. I am really happy to have made it here.

We spoke to a resident, who was very nice and gave us a quick history lesson about the town. We enjoyed the museum, which had many old artifacts. We then walked to the old school house. There were things, which seemed to be frozen in time. I recommend anyone to take an hour of their time to visit.

This small, house museum is a good starting point on your visit to the White Oaks mining ghost…read moretown. There is not a staff member working the building, it's self guided. A small hallway is bordered by glass walls showing you the inside of the home as it was during the mining days. Clearly a low budget museum, but there was plenty of information and photographs on the walls to give you a good background on the town and it's buildings. A box at the end is available for donations, especially if you take maps and pamphlet information before leaving.

Everything was covered with snow, so I recommend you come during the spring time or summer. The winter landscape was not terribly bad though, as I saw the iced pond and the snow on the pine trees (were they pines?). I also walked by the statue of Smokey, and the grave. It was nice to see it, I think Smokey is a good symbol for ecology and may interest people in environmentalism. It is great to get children and adults involved in these topics, and this garden and museum are a great start.

We purchased our tickets online, and were scanned in and ready for the movie. With reserved seating and with plushy recliners, you can't go wrong g! The snack area is fully stocked with delicious goodies and the freshest popcorn! The drinks are ice -cold and will surely be the thirst quencher for all the popcorn! Lol The staff is very friendly and follow all safety protocols and protocols. Masks are required in the lobby.
