Sheriff Pat garret goes out of town on business and Billy the kid makes his escape while Deputy Olinger was across the street feeding some of the prisoners. Billy talked Deputy Bell into taking him to the privy (outhouse) to relieve himself. They are not sure if a gun was left in there by one of his friends or if he over powered bell on the way up the stairs getting his gun. Bell was shot in the stairwell, then retreats out the back door and falls dead. Bob hearing the shot rushes to the courthouse thinking Bell had shot Billy but what he doesn't know is at this point Billy has broken into the armory and grabbed Bob's own shot gun, runs to the window as Bob is running up. Catches Bob's attention and as he looks up Billy blasts him with his own shotgun and kills him instantly. He then grabs a horse and heads out of town. Lots of history in this town. All events started over a merchant war. Tunstall came from England and opened a beef outfit and a store while Murphy and Dolan also had a beef outfit and a store. Tunstall is killed over this and Billy made war. Great place to see. Great visit!

I really had high expectations for this place. I've always wanted to see petroglyphs so talked my…read morehusband into going. First, there's no signs showing you where you should be looking. It was at a rv camping site. No visible parking spots only a big dirt lot (I guess that's what you could call it) there was a picnic table and a bathroom. We just ended up parking in front of some bushes. Got out of the car and looked around. Saw a little sign and a path so figured that was it. Can't remember how long I walked but I think it was a big loop. I saw no petroglyphs at all, just a bunch of rocks and dirt. A few signs here and there telling about what's in that spot but didn't see a thing. It was a big disappointment. If there are truly petroglyphs there they need some kind of signs telling you where to go.

Stanton, who was killed in a skirmish with the Apaches, Fort Stanton was built in 1855 by soldiers of the 1st Dragoon and the 3rd and 8th Infantry Regiments to serve as a base of operations against the Mescalero Apache Indians. It served as a military fortification through 1896. Built of local stone, the sturdy 1855 buildings have lasted to this day. The Fort was named for Captain Henry W. Stanton, killed fighting the Apaches in 1855 near present day Mayhill. Troops marched out from the Fort to search for and fight the Mescalero Indians during numerous campaigns from 1855 until the 1880's. One of the best preserved forts in America from that Era. Then passed by the cemetery and up to Mt. Serra Blanca reaching 10,090 ft. Beautiful scenery. Worth the trip!

The park area is easily accessible even though there is some road work nearby. I had no trouble getting my sprinter van into the rest area and out again. The park has very little shade and I would not recommend venturing into the scrub grass lest you encounter the local wildlife. The park has a sign with local history of Lincoln NM and the "Beautiful Hondo Valley" of which I would not disagree. It is very scenic here and I suggest you make the stop. This was a must visit on our trip to Roswell and though the fast was stop I'm so glad we did it! VERY important, there are two distinct stops at the North and Southside of town. Both have the famous "Roswell" sign and our favorite part was right up on top, if you look closely at the cow graphic the one closest to the UFO is being sucked up by the flying saucer. North Side Sign: This one had a historical placard you can read and it's own designated small parking lot. This was the first one we went to and though its covered in graffiti and stickers we still found it charming. The South Side Sign: No placard and you have to go further down the freeway going south toward Carlsbad to see the small diorama with a crashed UFO and Rockwell style classic small town folk withe their broken down car. Located in a public park (originally known as Iron Cross Park, now it's POW/MIA Park), this artwork…read morewas built by German prisoners of war who were interred here in Roswell during World War II. As part of a flood control program, the city paved the banks of the Spring River with local stones. It was during that project that a number of the prisoners cleverly arranged the rocks here in the outline shape of the German Empire's Iron Cross. You absolutely can't miss it and so when the townspeople noticed, the artwork was covered in concrete. In the 60+ years since then, the water has peeled away the concrete and the artwork is now uncovered. A testament to soldiers who were captured and I hope interred here in New Mexico humanely. This is one of the coolest museums I have visited. Not only am I interested in environmentalism,…read morebut I also find this cultural icon quite charming. I think Smokey is one of the few real heroes out there, who have made their way into pop culture. I also think that everyone has had a Smokey the bear t-shirt at some point in their life, maybe a hat? Coming here, I learned about the origin of fire towers and controlled fires. There is reference to firefighters and firefighting, so this may also pass as a fire fighter museum. But the real reason I came here was to admire and look at the memorabilia of Smokey the bear. I really enjoyed seeing all the toys and items collected by the museum. I am really happy to have made it here.
